Soni Razdan returns to direction with a coming-of-age digital movie

Soni Razdan explains why she prefers directing for the web than theatres

Upala KBR (MID-DAY; November 21, 2021)

Opportunities of acting never comes easy. Who knows this better than the experienced actor Soni Razdan who has had projects like Buniyaad, Saahil, Gaatha, 36 Chowringhee Lane, Saaransh, Daddy, Raazi and War to boast of. Despite the mixed reviews for her latest outing, Call My Agent: Bollywood, the actor has received appreciation for her portrayal of Teresa. But Razdan has no time to wait around. She has already dived deep into her next project.

While she continues scouting for better projects as an actor, Razdan is exploring ideas to direct again. Her last film Love Affair (2016) starring Ali Fazal and Kalki Koechlin remains unreleased, but that hasn’t deterred her. “I am working on a project for digital platforms. It’s an important story to tell and has a strong female character at the helm of everything,” says Razdan of the coming-of-age love story.

Having experienced a low-key response to her earlier directorial films—Nazar (2005) and Adnan Khan (2009)—Razdan hopes that the advent of digital entertainment will garner more eyeballs for her projects without the pressure of box office numbers.

“When you are making a movie for a theatrical release, you need to get the audience excited before they enter the theatres and keep them [hooked] for at least two hours. It has limitations. Most movies need some kind of razzle-dazzle—a star, action, or comedy—[to engage audiences]. But on the OTT medium, roles are written for characters of different ages. You also get adequate time to develop real characters with backstories and quirks,” explains the actor, who prefers directing for the web than theatres.

Raazi was the first offer that came to Alia Bhatt and me-Soni Razdan

Over the years, several Bollywood actors have shared screen space with their star kids. The latest to join the bandwagon is Soni Razdan, who has an interesting cameo in Meghna Gulzar’s Raazi, in which she plays her real-life daughter Alia Bhatt’s reel mother.

Talking about her role, Soni tells us, “It’s a small part but I couldn’t let it go for emotional reasons. When Meghna told me that I would be playing Alia’s mother, I agreed immediately. Then, I read the script, which is so powerful. I have an emotional role as the father (Rajit Kapur) has allowed his daughter to be a spy for India and go to Pakistan, but I’m the only one who opposes the idea initially.”

The mother-daughter duo has shot for some touching moments in the thriller. “We have quite a few such scenes. However, I don’t think all of it could be retained due to the length of the film. There was a breakdown scene which we had shot, but that hasn’t made it to the final cut. That was tough, but now, you have to watch it in the deleted portions,” she laughs. The veteran actress hopes that after this movie, Alia and she get more such opportunities. “I hope that we get another film together. Raazi was the first offer that came to Alia and me, and I jumped at it. But the next one should have equal opportunity for both of us. It will  be interesting to do a relationship drama with Alia, where I get to play her mother again,” exclaims Soni.

Beti Alia has raced ahead of all her contemporaries when it comes to performances and acclaim. The proud mother is ecstatic, “Alia has believed in whatever she has done and made the right choices. She’s not someone who will consult us about her movies. She obviously asks us for suggestions when she wants to, but that has never affected her decision. She’s a headstrong, but sensitive girl. After all, who would have expected she would do a Highway after Student Of The Year? That in itself was an acting course for her and I’m happy that today, everyone knows me as Alia’s mother. As a family, all of us are very proud of what she is doing.”

Of late, there have been a few on-screen appearances for Soni. Ask her what kept her away from the spotlight and she rues, “It wasn’t that I didn’t want to act. Unfortunately, after a point I just stopped getting offers. Thankfully, now things are back on track and I want to do some meaningful work again, regardless of the screen time.”

As of now, she is keen to become a director. She was supposed to helm a movie titled Love Affair, but that is on the back burner for now. Soni explains, “There’s another script that I have liked which I will be directing first. I wanted to do Love Affair, but it didn’t work out for now. However, I will revisit it after I finish this film.”

Let 10 Rustoms be made; we are definitely making Love Affair-Pooja Bhatt

Pooja Bhatt’s going ahead with her film though it is similar to Akshay’s movie
Upala KBR (DNA; June 7, 2016)

Enlarge ImageThere has been much speculation whether Pooja Bhatt’s next production Love Affair (after Cabaret) directed by Soni Razdan will take off, as Akshay Kumar-starrer Rustom, which releases on August 12 this year, is based on the same subject as her film — the famous 1959-Nanavati murder case.

Pooja says, “We are definitely making Love Affair. I am happy that Rustom is coming before us. It will help me to prepare for our film. Let 10 Rustoms be made! Ours is an erotic, sensual drama and very human. and from a woman’s perspective (Kalki Koechlin). It is not just about the Nanavati case. As we were facing casting issues for Love Affair, I decided to finish Cabaret first. By then Rustom got announced. But so what? Silsila and Arth released at the same time and got their own appreciation. We have a fantastic script, which I am not willing to let go of. Rustom has been made in 40 times the budget of our film so we shouldn’t even be making comparisons here.”

Pooja adds that the film got delayed also because of casting changes. “Initially, we were to make it with Arjun Rampal and Kalki, but Arjun was expecting a price which we couldn’t give. We have a budget so we decided to replace him with Ali Fazal. Casting is very important for a film like this and we needed someone like Kalki who looked like a foreigner.”

According to Pooja, Love Affair is about a young and lonely foreigner trapped in India. A husband who is caught between a lover and her husband. “It’s also about what is right and what is not. The backdrop of the story is the Nanavati murder case. Yes, we have a court case but that’s not the whole story. My film is a human drama, a woman’s heartland, a dutiful wife who is swept off her feet by a charming man. In real life, there are no blacks and whites in relationships. We can have the same subject but both under different directors can be treated differently.”

Akshay Kumar's Rustom likely to release before Soni Razdan’s Love Affair?

Akshay Kumar-starrer Rustom is based on naval commander K M Nanavati, who shot dead his best friend Prem Ahuja, when he discovered his wife Sylvia cheating on him with Prem. The crime of passion rocked Mumbai in 1959.

Rustom will give Akshay a chance to explore the darker side of heroism. But Soni Razdan is also making a film based on the same real-life crime with Ali Fazal in the naval officer’s role.

In Soni Razdan’s film Love Affair which Pooja Bhatt produced, Ali Fazal plays the naval officer. Though Rustom started much later, it is most likely to release long before Love Affair.

Richa Chadha's Cabaret delays Kalki Koechlin's Love Affair

Avinash Lohana (MUMBAI MIRROR; June 25, 2015)

Soni Razdan's Love Affair, a fictionalised version of the infamous Nanavati murder case of 1959, was supposed to go on the floors in March. However, Mirror has now learnt that the period drama featuring Kalki Koechlin, Gulshan Devaiah and Ali Fazal, will now only roll in November as producer Pooja Bhatt is currently busy with the Richa Chadha-starrer Cabaret.

Confirming this, Pooja says, "Rumours flying around that the film has been shelved are absolutely false. I don't know why but after Bombay Velvet failed, 'period' has become like a bad word. When we Bhatts commit to a film we always make it. Yes, earlier we were supposed to start shooting in March but now our first priority is finishing Cabaret before the monsoons sweep in as people don't like shooting in the rain. We will start filming Love Affair in November and intend to finish it by February- March 2016."

Love Affair, directed by Soni Razdan, is about a woman, played by Kalki, who is in an extra-marital affair. "She is stuck between the man she is married to and her lover who makes her feel like a woman again. It might be set in a different time zone but even if I decide to make it a contemporary film, the story will remain the same. It's the story of many women even today," asserts Pooja, adding, "I'm determined to make Love Affair."

Paul Walker asked me to keep it real-Ali Fazal

Neha Maheshwri Bhagat (BOMBAY TIMES; April 22, 2015)

Apart from pushing the envelope with every role he takes up, Ali Fazal also experiments with his looks. Be it his bearded avatar in 3 Idiots or the clean-shaven look in Fukrey, the actor, more often than not, opts for a different look in his movies. He is currently sporting a new look for his new project. Riding high on the success wave of the seventh installment of the international franchise Fast And Furious, the actor talks about his Bollywood journey that has just begun.

How was it working with Paul Walker and Vin Diesel?
It was fun. They didn't know about my accent in the film. So, my shot required six-seven retakes as Vin and Paul wouldn't stop laughing. Also, it was Paul's birthday on the first day of the shoot. I had a long conversation with him about films and action. He asked me to keep it real. He was a fine actor and martial arts expert. Vin and I chatted about Bollywood and potential locations in India for the next part of the franchise if there is one. I personally feel that it's a great franchise and the legacy should continue.

Like Vin, you shot a tribute video for Paul here.
It's interesting. Being the face of India in a franchise like that was quite nice and unexpected. Also, the response to the movie has been amazing and people have liked me. Suddenly, I am feeling a sense of responsibility.

Has the industry's perception of you changed post your Hollywood debut?
It's still too early to say as the film released just over two weeks ago. The industry's opinion of me changed after Khamoshiyan. I am getting approached for unconventional projects. Producers think they can bank on me.

How important is it for you to experiment with your look for every movie. Where does that come from?
It's the result of a lot of inputs from my end. I don't think I go by looks alone. Working on a particular look doesn't make you a serious actor. I am not into method acting. I interpret my character in a certain way and decide on it. I am very impulsive when it comes to experimenting with my looks and love playing with ideas by involving people from all walks of life.

You did some intimate scenes in Khamoshiyan. How much is too much for you?
When you see an Indian man's b**t, that's too much. That will make you feel awkward. Women are still beautiful. There were a lot of suggestive scenes and I don't want to do them for no reason. But a lot of it fit the movie well and I thought that it was shot beautifully.

So, you won't flaunt your butt?
That's for Dostana. That's one franchise I will stay away from.

What are you looking forward to now?
My next is Love Affair, a movie set in the '50s and is based on a true story. I play a dual-shade character. With every project, I have to grow. I am also looking forward to doing some action films. That should be fun.

Delay in Pooja Bhatt's Cabaret has pushes Love Affair ahead by two months?

Asira Tarannum (MID-DAY; April 20, 2015)

Looks like Soni Razdan’s Love Affair based on the sensational Nanavati murder case will have to wait for a couple more months to go on floors. The Pooja Bhatt production was to roll earlier this month, but is stuck due to a delay in shooting the last leg of her other film, Cabaret, in Kolkata.

An insider reveals, “The makers are facing certain permission issues in Kolkata. Once that is sorted, Pooja  will wrap up Cabaret as soon as possible. Only then will Love Affair go on floors. It will be shot in Mumbai.”

A fictional portrayal of the 1959 Nanavati case, Love Affair will have Gulshan Devaiah as Naval officer K M Nanavati, Kalki Koechlin as his wife, Sylvia and Ali Fazal as her paramour. Their extramarital affair takes a violent turn when her husband catches them red handed and guns the man down. Chandan Roy Sanyal will play a character similar to Ram Jethmalani, who was the prosecutor during the trial of this case.

Pooja confirms the delay in starting Love Affair. “It was meant to be shot in Mumbai. Now we are planning the last schedule of Cabaret in Kolkata and once that is over, we will move on to the other project,” she says.

First physical contact was difficult-Kalki Koechlin on filming lesbian sex scenes

Roshmilla Bhattacharya (MUMBAI MIRROR; March 24, 2015)

Kalki Koechlin is thrilled that her much-feted film, Margarita, With A Straw, is finally set for an April release. "We had so many screenings in India over the past year but it wasn't till Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao saw the film that a theatrical release became a reality," she says.

Kalki plays a young girl afflicted with cerebral palsy and admits that she knew nothing about the disease till director Shonali Bose's script, partly inspired by the filmmaker's cousin Malini, opened her eyes. For Kalki, the next six months was observation time and daily riyaaz. "I worked with a physiotherapist and a speech therapist and after a couple of months, I found myself holding a glass the way Laila would," she says, referring to her character in the film that won the NETPAC award at the Toronto Film Festival last year.

The film is as much about Laila's journey towards independence as it is an exploration of her sexuality. And Kalki admits that filming the intimate scenes with co-star Sayani Gupta was initially awkward. It helped that both, the film's director and the DOP were women, and having studied in a boarding school, she was used to seeing girls walking around in a state of undress. "However, the actual moment of physical contact was uncomfortable. For the first two takes I was 'acting'. Then Shonali made us sit and talk and slowly I began to feel like Laila," the actress recalls.

One of her favourite moments, which Shonali had wanted to edit out, shows Laila, who's always been dependent on her mother for care, at University frying eggs for the first time. "She breaks 12 eggs to get a perfect sunny side up. For me that scene symbolised the whole film," she smiles.

A lot of Laila's story came from Shonali and Malini's lives. And how much of Kalki is there in Laila? "We have the same goofy smile and the tendency to crack jokes," she laughs.

Another interesting film she's acting in is Soni Razdan's Love Affair, a fictional re-telling of the Nanavati murder case. "It's a very mainstream film with songs. But at the same time, it's challenging because it's difficult to understand how a woman can be in love with two people at the same time and be loyal to both. That's why she confides in her husband which gets her lover killed because he's so insecure about losing her," she says.

Her ex-husband Anurag Kashyap is making some interesting films and Kalki admits she'd love to work with him but can't fit into a Gangs Of Wasseypur. "I'm in no hurry to sign films. I need to have a good feeling about the script before I jump on it," she says.

And what about love? "Like the characters in the films that I do, I'm happy being on my own," she laughs. "I'm an adventurer and love getting out of the city, going to Kashmir or the surfing school in Pondicherry," she says, adding, "I've known the kids who run the school since childhood. I can be completely myself with them."

Check out Kalki Koechlin getting ready for adultery in Love Affair

Ankur Pathak (MUMBAI MIRROR; March 12, 2015)

Soni Razdan's Love Affair, a fictionalised version of the infamous Nanavati murder case that rocked the nation in 1959, is going on the floors this month. And leading lady Kalki Koechlin is prepping to step into the glamorous shoes of the leading lady, a character inspired by Sylvia Nanavati.

Sylvia, the English wife of Indian naval commander KM Nanavati, found herself at the centre of a passion crime, after her extramarital affair took a violent turn when her husband, caught her and her paramour redhanded and gunned him down.

Soni says that Kalki is the perfect fit for the complex role. "The character is a sexy siren who battles intense loneliness. Her marriage is on the rocks and she's pushed to a point where she seeks companionship outside marriage. The film examines the nature of a marriage and what we, as individuals, expect from it." When asked whether Kalki, whose parents are French expats, was cast because of her foreign lineage, Soni replied, "Yes. Kalki is of foreign origin, yet speaks great Hindi. That's a rare combination. Also, I was impressed by her previous performances and knew she could carry off the part."

The film will see the actress pair up with Ali Fazal, who plays her lover and Gulshan Deviah, who plays her husband. Ali Fazal replaced Arjun Rampal who opted out over remuneration issues. Did the change in cast lead to any script rewrites? "Absolutely none!" retorts Soni.

No actor sells a film in this day and age-Pooja Bhatt on replacing Arjun Rampal with Ali Fazal

Ali Fazal has replaced a pricey Arjun Rampal in Soni Razdan's upcoming directorial
Sanyukta Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; March 2, 2015)

Actor-producer Pooja Bhatt called up Ali Fazal four days ago and told him that she has both good news and bad news: “The bad news is that you have no time to prepare, the good news is the script is Love Affair,“ Pooja told the 28-year-old actor. He has replaced Arjun Rampal in the film being directed by Soni Razdan after the latter demanded a really big pay cheque.

When Mirror contacted Fazal, he quipped, “I'm charging a pretty good price myself. So, Arjun must have quoted an exorbitant amount for it to be unacceptable to the makers. He's a great actor and he accepted the film because he knew it is an amazing project, he should have been more open. Actors should not be so egotistical about their fees.“

Acknowledging that the dispute with Arjun had been over money issues, producer Pooja Bhatt said, “Yes, it is true. One of my strengths is making films in an efficient budget and I was unable to absorb Arjun's expectations with regard to his remunerations.“

When asked if the film will be less viable now since Arjun is a bigger star than Ali Fazal, Pooja retorted, “No actor sells a film in this day and age. In fact, with the market being what it is, all stars will have to reexamine their assumption of what they consider a fare remuneration.“

Love Affair is a fictionalised account inspired by the Nanavati murder case of 1959. Scheduled to go on floors in the second week of March, it features Kalki Koechlin and Gulshan Devaiah as a married couple with Ali Fazal playing the wife's lover who is shot dead after being caught red-handed by the husband.

Pooja Bhatt replaces Arjun Rampal with Ali Fazal due to budget constraints

Ali Fazal and Arjun Rampal
Bharati Dubey (MID-DAY; February 28, 2015)

Last year it was reported that Soni Razdan had roped in Arjun Rampal for her next directorial venture, Love Affair. However, just before the film could get rolling, the actor was shown the door with Ali Fazal replacing him.

Confirming the news, Pooja Bhatt says, “It was a decision taken by Mahesh Bhatt, Bhushan Kumar and me based on hardcore market realities. We are clear about one thing — eventually it is the film’s budget that works and it was important for us to ensure that we make Love Affair within an economic framework that can’t go wrong at the box office.”

Rampal has not really been on a high in terms of his box office success. His latest release Roy struggled to find takers, much like his previous releases, Satyagraha and Inkaar. Besides, the actor’s remuneration was on the higher side as compared to the budget planned by Pooja.

Love Affair is based on a crime of passion that takes place in the wake of infidelity in marriage. Apparently inspired by the sensational Nanavati murder case, the film will feature Fazal and Kalki Koechlin as a couple while Gulshan Devaiah will essay the lover’s role. Well known lawyer Ram Jethmalani has a pivotal role as a special prosecutor

No collaboration between SRK and me coming up anytime soon-Arjun Rampal

Sanyukta Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 19, 2015)

Waiting for Arjun Rampal can be more frustrating than Waiting for Godot. Its 72 hours before the actor finally comes on the phone and instantly starts talking about his upcoming thriller. But isn't Roy being projected as a Ranbir Kapoor film because he plays the title role, despite the fact that RK himself doesn't seem keen on promoting it as his film? “You don't need to believe everything that is written. Roy is being promoted as a three-character film and I have no problems with the way it is being marketed. Ranbir has a guest appearance, all speculations will be laid to rest once the film releases,“ Arjun snaps. “Despite its title, the film does not revolve around Roy, a mysterious thief, but around two directors Kabir and Ayesha who make films of contradicting genres but meet during the making of one specific film and end up falling in love.“

Buzz is, his character and Jacqueline Fernandez's Ayesha are loosely based on Hollywood directors Quentin Tarantino and Sofia Coppola's affair. Arjun points out that while director Vikramjit Singh was scripting his film, news of the Tarantino-Coppola affair was doing the rounds. “Vicky thought incorporating this angle would make for a great narrative but he only wove in imaginary instances from what their life together might have been like,“ Arjun explains.

However, he admits that Kabir is the character he feels closest to. “He loves vintage, so do I,“ the actor points out, having driven a 1960 Maserati among other vintage vehicles in the film. “He is particular about how he takes his drinks always with three cubes of ice. And only smokes cigarettes picked out of a black box.“

He adds that he even shopped for Kabir while holidaying in the Big Apple before the film rolled. “I bought him a hat from New York and a pair of shades from Mumbai.“

If RK has a cameo in Roy, then Arjun has one in Soni Razdan's Love Affair, a fictional retelling of the infamous Nanavati murder case of 1959. He plays the man who is fatally shot. “It's not a cameo, I play the lead,“ he retorts, but won't say more.

So, we move on to the Rock On!! sequel which rolls in April. Part 1 fetched him a National Award for his 'supporting' role as Joe Mascarenhas. “Playing a rock star is passé,“ he laughs. “I'm more excited about playing Arun Gawli.“

To flesh out his role of the gangster-turned-politician, Arjun has been watching Gawli's campaign videos and has even met his daughter, Geeta. “The story will be told from her point of view. Daddy is my toughest role so far,“ he asserts.

Now that he's much more at ease, we bring up a controversial subject. But as soon as we say, “Mehr and Sussanne are...“ the line goes dead. He calls back and apologises, “The network in my house is terrible.“

Somewhere during the 'terrible network' Arjun has adroitly switched subjects. We talk about his now-defunct production house, Chasing Ganesha Films which was launched in 2006 with I See You but hasn't rolled out another film in the last decade. “I'm waiting for the right script to re-launch my banner. Maybe with the Gawli film, I will. But, I'm still waiting for the final script before I take a call...“ he trails off.

What about another film with Shah Rukh Khan after Ra.One? “There's no collaboration between SRK and me coming up, anytime soon,“ he says abruptly.

He was in the middle of a controversy when his proximity with Sussanne was being seen as one of the reasons for the Hrithik-Sussanne separation. Ask him what his equation with the actor is post the divorce and he snaps, “I am not here to talk about my personal life.“ The line goes dead, again. This time he doesn't call back.

Alia Bhatt, who had 3 releases in 2014, will have just 1 release in 2015

Subhash K Jha (DNA; January 5, 2015)

Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, 2 States and Highway. What a year Alia Bhatt had in 2014! She managed to impress audiences as well as critics. But this year, she seems to be taking it slow. The 21-year-old has just one release lined up for 2015 — Shandaar with Shahid Kapoor, directed by Vikas Bahl, who helmed Queen, which made it to everyone’s ‘Top 3 Films’ list last year. Here, Alia talks about not working with her dad yet, why she is not worried about not being in her mom’s film and why her biggest high brought tears to her eyes. Read on...

Tell us about your films in 2015?
I’ve shot for just one film this year. So I’ll have just one release. And I’m okay with that. It just happened that way.

Are you looking forward to the awards for Highway?
Of course, I want awards. I don’t know if I’m going to get them. But I feel I’ve had a really blessed year. Recently, I was at an event at a college. And they were dancing to my song. That brought tears to my eyes. That was my biggest high.

Are you happy by nature?
I’ve a fear of being happy. Because I fear grief is around the corner. I am Piscean. And I am a complete drama queen.

Do you get stifled by constant attention?
No. When people stop looking at me is when I get really worried.

Do you enjoy travelling for shooting?
I am an inquisitive and excited traveller, so I do like to take time off to travel independent of work. And I will take time off to take a holiday every year. That’s a promise I made to myself. And visit a place I’ve not seen yet. The experiences that you create for yourself help you to grow as a person. I need those experiences to feed on. I am happy working hard and taking an annual holiday. And of course, my mom joins me for my shootings whenever she can.

Did your mom (Soni Razdan) join you for the shooting of Shaandar in Europe?
She was supposed to. But there was a change in my schedule and she couldn’t join me. Now she’ll get busy directing a film.So she’ll have no time for me.

Your mom is directing a film with other actors. Does that make you jealous?
Why should it make me jealous? I am just so excited that she is directing a film again. This film (Love Affair) has no role suitable for me. I wouldn’t like to be in it just for the heck of it. In our family, it doesn’t work that way. I still haven’t worked with my father’s production house.

Newcomer in Pooja Bhatt's Cabaret will give Alia a run for her money-Mahesh Bhatt

Pooja Bhatt is all set to produce two films in 2015. One is Love Affair directed by Soni Razdan and the other is Cabaret, starring Gulshan Devaiah.

She’s excited about the latter film. She shares, “I’ve seen this stunning newcomer, a Mumbai girl. My father says she will give Alia a run for her money. I will most probably cast her in Cabaret.”

At the moment, though, Pooja is looking forward to returning to acting with Mr Chaalu. “I made it very clear to Reema (Kagti) and Ritesh (Sidhwani) that I won’t be able to shoot for them when I am making a film. Soni’s film starts on February 20. I’ll wrap up my work in Mr Chaalu by then.”

She adds, “I guess now I’m a filmmaker first, then an actor. Production is like a marital alliance for me. Acting is an illicit affair. But I am looking forward to facing the camera again with Saif and Kangana. I know the entire team so well. It feels like home.”

Of Love Affair, she says, “It’s a film about infidelity in a marriage. Arjun Rampal plays the husband, Kalki Koechlin the wife and Gulshan Devaiah is the lover.”

I will not interfere with film on Nanavati case-Ram Jethmalani

Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 8, 2014)

Soni Razdan had earlier admitted to Mirror (August 4) that she had consulted lawyer Ram Jethmalani for inputs on her upcoming film Love Affair which is reportedly inspired by the Nanavati Case. Jethmalani was the Special Public Prosecutor in the murder case and is the muse for a character in the film. Soni confirmed the news, saying: “Yes, there is an important character in the film inspired by Ram Jethmalani. He will be played by Chandan Roy Sanyal."

Recounting her meeting with the senior lawyer, she added: “He turned out to be a great source of informa tion. His mind is razor sharp and he regaled us with many anecdotes."

Explaining their choice of actor, Pooja Bhatt, who is producing the film, said: “I was the one who suggested Chandan's name to Soni. He is a remarkable actor and perfect for the role. He will be called Ram Jaisinghani in the film."

When contacted, Jethmalani admitted that he is aware of the goings-on: “But I will not interfere with the film. I never trespass into areas of creativity." When asked if Chandan will do justice to the role and match his persona and style, Jethmalani quipped, “What if I say 'No'? Still, I shall not object to his portrayal."

Jethmalani shot to fame with the 1959 case of K. M. Nanavati vs. State of Maharashtra. The story of Naval commander K M Nanavati who in a crime of passion brutally murdered his wife's lover, became the subject of extensive press coverage and caught the fancy of many filmmakers at the time. The 1963 Sunil Dutt-Leela Naidu starrer, Yeh Rastey Hain Pyar Ke, fictionalised the controversial judgement on screen.

Pooja however vehemently refuted the buzz that their film is also based on the infamous case, and said: “We are not making a film on the Nanavati Case per se. We are just taking portions from a real life incident that riveted the nation in the late 50s."

I don't demand any answers from Alia Bhatt-Soni Razdan

Soni Razdan on parenting daughter Alia and her second directorial venture
Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 4, 2014)

Why did it take you nine years to direct a film after Nazar?
I wanted to do a film which came from within. I’ve been working on Love Affair for the past three years. There’s also another script, which was to be my directorial debut. It is a period love story and I’ll make it with my daughter Alia (Bhatt) after Love Affair. I’ll produce it as well.

Weren't you tempted to cast Alia in Love Affair?
She is too young for the film. Besides, I don't want to interfere with her career at this stage, when it's going great guns. So far we've cast just two actors. I wanted someone who could convincingly play a debonair charmer and Pooja (Bhatt) and I met Arjun at his house for a narration. That man has evolved as an actor. Gulshan Devaiah who plays the hus band also emotes well.

Buzz is, Love Affair is based on the Nanavati murder case…
No, it’s an exotic, fictional story with perhaps a few references to that case. The fabric is similar. I gravitate towards drama.

You met Ram Jethmalani for inputs..
I wanted to know more about a certain incident from him.

Why isn't your husband, Mahesh Bhatt's company producing thisfilm?
I didn't want to impose myself on them. One should avoid mixing work and marriage because filmmaking itself is such a stressful relationship. But if the Bhatts offer me a film, I might do it. I enjoyed working with them in Nazar.

Bollywood has never been too kind to woman directors like Kalpana Lajmi, Tanuja Chandra...
Well, it is a male dominated industry and many producers believe that women can only make sob stories. But times are changing.

Back to Alia, what's your take on her career graph?
(Smiles proudly) She is doing well but she has to keep her head on her shoulders and work harder to maintain the momentum.

She's a part of the big, bad Bollywood world now. Does that make you nervous?
It was lucky that she started out with Karan Johar's Student Of The Year. When you get such a launch, nobody acts funny with you. I hear horror stories from young girls who want to get into films.

How do you react to her linkups?
I don't demand any answers from her. She tells me whatever she wants to. And I leave it at that.

Gulshan Devaiah to play K M Nanavati in Soni Razdan's Love Affair

Ankur Pathak (MUMBAI MIRROR; June 30, 2014)

Mirror was the first one to tell you that Arjun Rampal will play a character inspired by the slain Prem Ahuja in Soni Razdan’s Love Affair-a fictionalised account of the infamous Nanavati Murder Case of 1959.
Now, we've learnt that Gulshan Devaiah, who was last seen in Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-leela, has been finalised to play the naval officer modelled on Kawas Manekshaw Nanavati, who in a crime of passion, shot his wife's lover Prem Ahuja, and became the fodder for multiple films and books over the decades.

Revealed a source close to the production, “Gulshan has a great working relationship with Pooja Bhatt. He is committed to another film with her called Cabaret. She felt the actor, who has an intense, brooding persona, is ideal for the role of the naval commander. Even Soni was keen to have him on board."

Confirming the same, producer Pooja Bhatt told Mirror, “Our film is a love triangle revolving around a wife, her lover and the husband. Gulshan has been locked to play the husband who is the naval officer husband. We're still in casting for the film while simultaneously researching the subject. We need a large ensemble cast and we are close to finalising the actors including the wife."
