Dr Jalil Parkar, spoke to Bombay Times, after sharing a medical bulletin earlier in the day. Parkar told us, "Patient is hemodynamically stable and shall be weaned off the ventilator as per medical norms (the process has been initiated). He also added, "Discharge is not something to be discussed at this juncture. No prophecy. He is sedated. Yes, he had minimal brain haemorrhage but he is out of danger."

Earlier in the day, while sharing the updates with media, Parkar said, "Yesterday (Tuesday) morning he was admitted in the hospital. He was brought in by his family physician. After seeing him in the casualty, we realized he needed ICU hospitalization. He was having jerks. His blood pressure was high. We had to put him on ventilator as we had to do certain investigations. The ventilator was as a safeguard. He was not critical. We did the investigations as required.”

A digital subtraction angiography (DSA) was performed by a neurosurgeon. “We did a small procedure DSA, by a neurosurgeon. The procedure has been accomplished,” the doctor said, adding that doctors are optimistic about the next step. “He will be off the ventilator tomorrow.”

Saif Ali Khan meets autorickshaw driver who took him to Lilavati Hospital after getting stabbed

V Narayan (THE TIMES OF INDIA; January 23, 2025)

Mumbai: Autorickshaw driver Bhajan Singh Rana (56) — who drove an injured Saif Ali Khan to Lilavati Hospital early Jan 16 after he was stabbed by an intruder — was resting when he received an unexpected ring from the actor’s personal secretary on Tuesday afternoon. Saif wanted to meet Rana in his hospital room to thank him personally before leaving for his Bandra residence Tuesday evening.

After the meeting, Rana told TOI: “The actor asked me how I managed to escape from the media glare at the hospital entrance. I said I wore a mask. The 5-10 minutes I spent with the actor will be my most memorable experience in the 25 years that I have spent in Mumbai facing hardships.”

Rana said, “The actor was very humble and I could not believe it when he hugged me in the presence of his family members and assured me of any help when needed. All of them greeted me when I entered the hospital room. I have been driving for 25 years in the city and this was the first time a star sat in my autorickshaw.”

Describing the incident, Rana said he was on night duty when he entered the lane where Khan resides. A woman hailed his rickshaw and he halted.

“I did not notice who the person was but his clothes were soaked in blood and he was in pain. I noticed cuts on his neck and back. I think his two sons, elder Ibrahim and younger Taimur, were with him, though I am not sure. He spoke to them during the journey.”

After expressing their appreciation, both Saif and his mother, veteran actor Sharmila Tagore, shared their contact details and offered him support when required. “In my native village in Uttarakhand, my family is getting recognition after reports of the incident,” he added.

Actor Saif Ali Khan met auto driver Bhajan Singh Rana, who had rushed him to Lilavati Hospital in his auto-rickshaw following the incident. Saif thanked the driver, introduced him to his family, and expressed his gratitude. The actor also gave Rana some money and assured him of support in the future if needed

The auto driver shared that he met Saif’s mother, Sharmila Tagore, and even touched her feet as a gesture of respect. After the attack, Saif was taken to Lilavati Hospital by his son, Ibrahim, in an auto-rickshaw driven by Rana. Recalling the incident, Rana said, “The actor was wearing a white kurta and was injured. He kept asking how much time it would take to reach the hospital.”

Following discharge from Lilavati hospital, actor Saif Ali Khan returned to his Mumbai house being lit up, akin to Diwali. The actor also met Bhajan Singh, the auto driver who drove him to the hospital following the stabbing incident. Later, police visited his house on Wednesday to record his statement.

The security of the building has been in question since the incident. In a major move, Saif has employed the services of actor Ronit Roy’s security firm. Upon reaching out, Ronit refused to divulge details on the cover being provided, but said, “We are already here with Saif. He is doing fine now and has come back.” Meanwhile, videos have been circulating on social media of additional CCTV cameras being installed around the building.

“Both the security guards in the building were sleeping when his attacker entered it by crossing over the boundary wall,” a police official told PTI, adding, “The accused entered the building from the main entrance where no CCTV camera has been installed. He removed his shoes and kept them in his bag to avoid making any noise and also switched off his phone.”

Officials also said that the accused had been lobbying the building for a while and just wanted to rob someone “rich” before escaping to his home country to take care of his ailing mother. He chose Saif’s house at random.

Saif Ali Khan attack case: Actor discharged, cops to record statement soon

MID-DAY (January 22, 2025)

Five days after he was brutally attacked by an intruder in his residence, Saif Ali Khan, 54, was discharged from Lilavati Hospital in Bandra on Tuesday. Accompanied by his wife, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and other family members, the actor was spotted in a white shirt, jeans and sunglasses as he walked out of the hospital and got into his vehicle amid heavy police presence.

As Saif reached his Bandra residence, Satguru Sharan, he waved to the media. The Dil Chahta Hai actor looked healthy as he greeted the paparazzi with a smile. Kareena and her sister Karisma Kapoor were spotted at the building where security has been tightened since the attack. CCTV cameras have also been installed on the premises.

Saif underwent a supra-major spinal surgery between 5 am and 9 am on January 16, the day of the attack, to remove the broken metal piece from the assailant’s knife that was lodged in his back and underwent cosmetic surgery for multiple stab wounds on the neck and hand. Dr Niraj Uttamani, chief operating officer at the hospital, said, “Saif Ali Khan is in good health though the surgical wounds will take some time to heal. From the hospital’s end, the actor was absolutely fine at the time of discharge.”

Asked if the actor had been asked to return to the hospital for follow-ups, Dr Uttamani replied in affirmative, stating, “The actor will be in touch with Dr Nitin Dange, the consultant neurosurgeon who operated on him.” Asked if post-operative physiotherapy was recommended, the COO replied, “The treating neurosurgeon or the actor’s family will decide if it’s required.”

Attempts made to contact Dr Dange did not yield any results. Meanwhile, the police team investigating the home invasion will be recording the statement of the actor in the coming days. The statement will be corroborated with the submissions of the accused, Shariful Islam, and if required, the accused can be further confronted about any new leads that come in, said a police officer, requesting anonymity.

Flashback
Saif was allegedly stabbed six times by Shariful, who had barged into his house around 2.30 am on January 16, following which the actor was rushed to Lilavati Hospital in an autorickshaw by his kin.

After the artiste’s admission to the hospital, Dr Dange said, “The actor had sustained a major injury to the thoracic spine due to the broken piece of knife that was lodged. The surgery was done to remove the foreign body and also fix the cerebrospinal fluid leakage. Luckily, it was a dural [the outermost layer of tissue that covers the spinal cord] injury and did not impact the spinal cord. The actor is responding well to the treatment and we have kept him in the ICU for observation. He will be moved out of ICU by tomorrow [Friday] and should be discharged on or before Monday.”

Sources within the hospital revealed that a 3D CT scan was done prior to the surgery and a 2.5-inch-long metal piece lodged in the spinal area was visible in the image. The neurosurgeon surgically removed the metal piece, which was later confirmed to be a broken knife piece.

Auto driver who drove Saif Ali Khan to hospital didn’t realize his passenger was a celeb

Saif Ali Khan attacked: He was bleeding heavily, rushed him quickly to hospital, says auto driver

V Narayan (THE TIMES OF INDIA; January 18, 2025)

Mumbai: The rickshaw driver who rushed Saif Ali Khan to Lilavati Hospital after the attack on the actor at his home on Thursday was oblivious to his passenger's celebrity status. Bhajan Singh, who lives in a chawl on Pipeline Road in Khar (East), told TOI that upon noticing "a profusely bleeding person", his only thought was to take a short-cut and reach hospital at the earliest so that his life could be saved.

During the journey, Khan remained conscious and repeatedly asked Singh about their expected arrival time. "I told him it will take only two minutes. The injured actor was accompanied by his domestic help (Hari) and his son Taimur. He was not panicking, though I noticed his white outfit was soaked in blood," Singh recounted.

"Initially I did not realize that the badly wounded person was a famous Bollywood actor. My only aim was to reach Lilavati Hospital at the earliest. They were in a state of such emergency! That also prevented me from asking for my fare. The fact that such a big actor sat in my vehicle itself was a big source of satisfaction for me, when once I realised who he was."

On the fateful night, Singh, who works night shifts in the Bandra-Khar area, spotted one of the actor's domestic help waving at him near Satguru Sharan, Khan's residential building. "It was a scene of panic. The actor sat inside, his son in the middle and (Hari) on the side before we left for the hospital," he recalled, describing how a blood-soaked Khan struggled to walk. Upon reaching the hospital, the staff immediately attended to him and took him on a stretcher.

Singh's chawl-mate Harshitt Rana said, "Singh, I and three others (all auto drivers) are from Uttarakhand and have lived together for 20 years in Mumbai, driving autorickshaws. Our families live in Uttarakhand. Singh drives at night while I do so during the day."

Saif Ali Khan undergoes four-hour surgery for multiple stab wounds, on road to recovery

Saif Ali Khan undergoes four-hour surgery for multiple stab wounds, on road to recovery

MID-DAY (January 17, 2025)

Actor Saif Ali Khan, 54, will be shifted to the special suite of Lilavati Hospital, Bandra West, on Friday and may get discharged on or before Monday. The actor had to be shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital after he underwent a four-hour-long (5 am to 9 am) supra-major surgical intervention for multiple stab wounds. The actor was stabbed six times by an intruder who had barged into his house in the wee hours (around 2.30 am) of Thursday and was rushed to Lilavati Hospital by his caretaker.

Dr Nitin Dange, consultant neurosurgeon, who operated on the actor's spinal wound, said, “The actor had sustained a major injury to the thoracic spine due to the broken piece of knife that was lodged. The surgery was done to remove the piece and also fix the Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) leakage. Luckily, it was a dural spinal injury (the outermost layer of tissue that covers the spinal cord) and did not impact the spinal cord. The actor is responding well to the treatment and we have kept him in the ICU for observation. He will be moved out of ICU by tomorrow (Friday) and should be discharged on or before Monday.”

The actor had sustained stab wounds to his chest, left hand, and neck, of which two injuries were deep wounds – right side of the neck and the injury on the left hand – which were repaired by the plastic surgery team led by Dr Leena Jain. He was also monitored by Dr Srinivas Kudva, the cardiologist. “He is completely stable now, recovering and out of danger,” he said.

Dr Niraj Uttamani, chief operating officer of Lilavati Hospital, said, “Fortunately, the surgery has been done very well. He is on a recovery path; the operation is over and he has been shifted to the ICU. He will be shifted to the normal ward in a day or two. After that, he can be taken care of. The injuries were deeper but our doctor and medical team have managed well.” A senior police officer revealed that the actor's statement is crucial to know the exact happenings and it will be recorded in the coming days.

Sources within the hospital revealed that a 3D CT scan was done prior to the surgery and a broken metal piece lodged in the spinal area was visible in the image. The neurosurgeon surgically removed the metal foreign body, which was later confirmed to be the tip of a broken knife piece. The actor was conscious when taken for the scans.

Mumbai: In an incident that sent shockwaves through Bollywood and raised questions about security in upscale neighbourhoods, actor Saif Ali Khan was stabbed repeatedly by an intruder in his penthouse in Bandra during an apparent burglary attempt early Thursday.

Khan, 54, sustained multiple wounds and was rushed to Lilavati Hospital where doctors operated on him. The hospital later issued a statement saying he was “out of danger”.

A Bandra police officer said the man is suspected to have scaled a wall to enter the 13-storey Satguru Sharan building.

A duct is believed to have given him access to a 11th floor flat through a toilet window. Khan owns the top four floors of the building.

The incident took place around 2.30 am. According to the FIR, the intruder—described as a man in his late 30s of slim build and dark complexion—was spotted by a stay-at-home nurse, Eliyamma Phillip, outside the actor’s son Jehangir’s bedroom. Phillip told police she woke up on hearing anoise and found a bathroom light on.

“I saw the shadow of a man wearing a cap and got nervous. He came out of the bathroom and tried to enter Jai baba’s bedroom. I immediately raised an alarm,” she said.

Phillip said the intruder warned her in English to stay silent and demanded Rs 1 crore before he attacked with a knife, causing minor injuries on her wrist, back and face. Her screams woke up a maid, Junu, who called out for help, prompting Saif and his wife Kareena Kapoor Khan to come rushing.

They were joined by a male domestic worker and two other maids. Saif was stabbed and slashed on the neck and spine and other body parts as he tried to overpower the intruder. “A piece of the knife that broke was found in his back,” said a police officer.

In her statement to the police, the Khans’s house help sheds light on what went down during home invasion that left actor seriously injured
Faizan Khan (MID-DAY; January 19, 2025)

The intruder who entered actor Saif Ali Khan’s residence, Satguru Sharan, in the early hours of Thursday was first spotted by a house help, Eliyama Philip, and he had demanded Rs 1 crore, according to the Bandra police, who recorded her statement. “I asked him, ‘Aapko kya chahiye?’ He responded, ‘Need money’. When I asked him how much, he replied in English, ‘One crore’,” Eliyama revealed to the cops. Saif, who is undergoing treatment at Lilavati Hospital, sustained six severe stab wounds in the scuffle with the robber.

Meanwhile, the Mumbai Crime Branch has launched a manhunt for the accused, who is suspected to still be in the city. The cops are hunting for the attacker based on the description of domestic helpers who had a face-off with the attacker as he barged into the home.

Eliyama, the prime witness and complainant in the case, takes care of Saif and Kareena Kapoor Khan’s youngest son, Jehangir.  According to the police, the 10th to 13th floors and the terrace of Satguru Sharan belong to Khan. He lives on the 11th floor, while the terrace is used by the staff. At the time of the incident, his three children—including Ibrahim Ali Khan, three male and four women staffers and Kareena, were at home.

The family resides on the 11th and 12th floors of Satguru Sharan. The 11th floor has three rooms, and the couple stay in one while the second is for the couple’s first child, Taimur and Geeta, a nurse who looks after him. “The third room is for Jehangir, where I and another nanny, Junu, take care of him,” said Eliyama.

‘Sensed something unusual’
Eliyama’s statement to the police reads, “On January 15, around 11 pm, I fed Jayababa [Jehangir] and put him to bed. After that, Junu and I slept on the floor under his bed. On January 10, around 2 am, I woke up after hearing a sound. I got up and saw that the bathroom door was open, and the light was on inside. Assuming Kareena Ma’am had come to check on Jayababa, I went back to sleep. However, I sensed something unusual and woke up again.”

It further read, “This time, I saw someone wearing a cap standing near the bathroom door. As I leaned in to see more clearly, the person came out of the bathroom and started walking toward Jayababa’s bed. Alarmed, I quickly got up and went to Jayababa, but the person put a finger to his lips and said, ‘No sound,’ in Hindi. At that moment, Junu also woke up. The person threatened her as well, saying, ‘Koi awaaz nahi aur koi bahar bhi nahi jayega [No noise, and no one will leave]’.”

“As I tried to pick up Jayababa, the person ran toward me, holding a wooden object in his left hand and something like a hex blade in his right hand. During the struggle, he attempted to stab me with the blade. I raised my hands to block the attack and sustained injuries near my wrists and on the middle finger of my left hand. I then asked him, ‘Aapko kya chahiye?’ He responded, ‘Need money’. When I asked him how much, he replied in English, ‘One crore’,” the statement read.

According to Eliyama, Junu, seizing the opportunity, ran out of the room, screaming. “Hearing her, Saif Sir and Kareena Ma’am rushed into the room. Upon seeing the intruder, Saif Sir asked, ‘Kaun hai? What do you want?’ In response, the intruder attacked him with a wooden object and blade. When Geeta entered the room, the intruder got into a scuffle with her as well and attacked her.”

‘Saif Sir pushed him away’
Eliyama stated that during the commotion, Saif managed to shove the intruder away, and everyone, including the actor, ran out of the room, shutting the door behind them. “We then rushed upstairs to another room. By that time, [staffers] Ramesh, Hari, Ramu, and Paswan, who were sleeping in the staff quarters, came out to help. When we returned to the room with them, we found the door open, but the intruder was nowhere to be found despite searching the house thoroughly,” the statement read.

According to Eliyama, Saif sustained injuries to the back of his neck, near his right shoulder, the left side of his back, and his left wrist and elbow while Geeta’s right wrist, back and face were wounded in the scuffle.

The immediate aftermath
According to the police, Kareena asked the staff to find an auto driver as there was no one available to drive the car. Ibrahim then took Saif to Lilavati Hospital in an autorickshaw, where he underwent surgery. “We have identified the person, and multiple teams have been formed to trace him. It appears that the intruder entered the house with the intent to commit robbery,” said Dixit Gedam, DCP, Zone IX.

An FIR has been registered under Sections 311 (robbery or dacoity with an attempt to cause death or grievous hurt), 312 (attempt to commit robbery or dacoity when armed with a deadly weapon) and 331(4)(6)(7) (punishment for house-trespass or housebreaking) of the BNS.

Alka Yagnik suddenly loses hearing, cancels all concerts

Alka Yagnik reveals rare hearing loss diagnosis

THE TIMES OF INDIA (June 19, 2024)

Top Bollywood playback singer Alka Yagnik on Tuesday revealed that she suffered extensive hearing loss while on a personal visit to Goa. The singer added that the hearing loss was caused by a viral attack, reports Lata Mishra.

She had gone to Goa with friends in May when she first began to lose hearing in her right ear. Within 24 hours she lost hearing in her right ear entirely and felt her left ear too getting affected.

The singer’s PR team said all her stage shows, including one in London, have been cancelled. Her manager, Niraj Mishra, said all treatment options are being explored, both within India and abroad.

In an Instagram post, the singer wrote as she walked out of a flight in Goa felt like she couldn’t hear anything. Initially she thought it was because of cabin pressure and that her ear would pop soon, it only became worse as time passed. By evening, she felt, she had lost hearing in her right ear completely.

According to sources at Lilavati Hospital, where she was admitted upon her return from Goa, Yagnik was diagnosed with sensorineural nerve hearing loss. Doctors said that sensorineural nerve hearing loss is hard to reverse. However, there are several treatment options available to manage the symptoms and improve quality of life for those with this condition.

BOMBAY TIMES (June 19, 2024)

Alka Yagnik, who ruled the music scene in the ’90s and 2000s, revealed a challenging health diagnosis to her fans with an Instagram post. The singer shared that she has been diagnosed with a rare sensory neural nerve condition caused by a viral infection.

Sharing the update, she wrote, “To all my fans, friends, followers and well wishers. A few weeks ago, as I walked out of a flight, I suddenly felt I was not able to hear anything. Having mustered some courage in the weeks following the episode, I want to break my silence now for all my friends and well wishers who have been asking me why I’m missing in action. It has been diagnosed by my docs as a rare sensory neural nerve hearing loss, due to a viral attack. This setback has caught me completely unaware. As I attempt to come to terms with it, please keep me in your prayers. For my fans and young colleagues, I would add a word of caution regarding exposure to very loud music and headphones. One day, I wish to share the health perils of my professional life. With all your love and support, I am hoping to recalibrate my life and come back to you soon. Your support and understanding will mean the world to me in this critical hour.”

– Inputs by Divya Kaushik & Riya Sharma
----------------------------------
While Alka has cautioned her fans and young musicians regarding the exposure to loud music and headphones, Dr Madhukar Bhardwaj, Senior Consultant & HOD, Neurology, says, “Repeated loud music over a period of time can definitely cause hearing loss but it does not cause sudden hearing loss. The sudden hearing loss involves other causes and occurs without any particular cause.”

He adds, “What Alka Yagnik has encountered is a sudden hearing loss. Loud music most certainly wasn’t the cause of her sudden hearing loss.”

Dr Vipul Gupta, director of Neurointervention and co-chief of the stroke unit, says, “Alka Yagnik has been diagnosed with sensory neural nerve hearing loss, a condition where damage to the inner ear or auditory nerve pathways affects one’s ability to perceive sound. This type of hearing loss typically results from aging, prolonged exposure to loud noises, genetic predispositions, infections, or certain medications”

I was just bowled over by Dilip Kumar's style and aura-Dr Jalil Parkar

Dilip Kumar’s doctor for more than 20 years, Dr Jalil Parkar remembers the veteran actor as one of his most cooperative patients, who also wore his stardom lightly
Somita Pal (MID-DAY; July 8, 2021)

Veteran actor Dilip Kumar passed away at Hinduja Healthcare Hospital in Khar on Wednesday around 7.30 am. Dr Jalil Parkar, the actor’s doctor for the last 21 years, remembers him as an affectionate person, and someone who bowled him over with his style and aura.

Dr Parkar, a chest physician at the Lilavati Hospital, said he would love to talk to everyone. “He would chat with the doctors, nurses, ward boys every time he got hospitalised. He would ask them about their families and how their day was,” said Dr Parkar, whose first interaction with the actor was when he went to invite him as chief guest for the annual day function of the Grant Medical College where he was a student.

‘I am an eternal fan’
“I still remember. The loud and boisterous goings-on stopped as soon as he stepped on the stage and every one listened to his masterful speech in pin-drop silence. He had complete command over languages, be it English, Urdu, Hindi or Pashtu. As an eternal fan, I was bowled over by his style and aura,” said Dr Parkar.

Before the Covid-19 outbreak, the actor was hospitalised in Lilavati Hospital under Dr Parkar whenever required. “Since Lilavati Hospital is a Covid centre, his wife Saira Banu ji, chose to admit him to Hinduja Hospital at Khar this time around. She got some of us doctors who are not attached there, permission to treat him. Early on Wednesday morning, I got a call from the family’s main doctor, Dr Nitin Gokhale, who informed me he had passed away. I will always remember him as one of the most cooperative patients who wore his stardom lightly,” said Dr Parkar, who last saw him on Tuesday evening.

“I had been visiting him daily for the past one week at the hospital. As a patient, he had complete trust in us. We treated him for age-related cardio-pulmonary issues and prostate problems. He never questioned his doctors,” said Dr Parkar.

‘A voracious reader’
“Whenever he got better, he used to request us and make us walk with him in the ward. It’s now a memory, how he used to talk about his illness and other things. He was a voracious reader and well informed about everything including movies, politics, literature etc,” said Dr Parker.

Dilip Kumar was diagnosed with bilateral pleural effusion - a build-up of excess fluid between the layers of the pleura outside the lungs and underwent a successful pleural aspiration procedure and was discharged after five days when he was admitted on June 29. He had advanced prostate cancer, which had spread to other parts of the body. He was being treated for it and was in and out of hospital many times. He also had kidney failure. Dr Parkar said the advanced cancer deteriorated the actor’s health and he died of cardio-respiratory arrest.

Sanjay Dutt admitted to Kokilaben Hospital for preliminary tests

Himesh Mankad (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 21, 2020)

Following consultations with doctors at Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital, Sanjay Dutt was admitted to another city hospital, Kokilaben, on Tuesday. The actor was diagnosed with lung cancer last week after he checked into Lilavati Hospital complaining of breathlessness. While rumours flew thick and fast, wife Maanayata, in a statement, requested people to stop speculating on the stage of his illness and let the doctors continue to do their work. “We will update you all regularly with his progress,” she assured. Maanayata was stuck in Dubai with their children, Iqra and Shahraan, when the Coronavirus lockdown was suddenly announced. She flew back to the city on August 12 and is currently under 14-day quarantine, which is why the actor is accompanied everywhere by sister Priya Dutt.

The 61-year-old actor has taken the illness in his stride and remains upbeat, greeting the paps with a thumbs up and telling them to pray for him. According to a source, the family has seen Nargis Dutt and his late wife Richa Sharma fight the Big C and Sanju’s sister, Priya, has been running a cancer foundation for over two decades so they are familiar with the treatment. “Despite knowing this will be a long and tough journey, they are determined to go about their lives as normally as possible, confident that this too shall pass. Right now, the preliminary tests are being conducted. So, Sanjay is not expected to be in the hospital for a long time. Once the reports are out, he will return home but hospital visits will be frequent.”

There have been reports that Sanjay will be flying off to the USA or another country abroad for treatment. The source dismisses the speculation: “The family will discuss the future course of action depending on the test reports.”

MUMBAI MIRROR (August 17, 2020)

On Sunday, at around 12 noon, Sanjay Dutt was spotted at the Lilavati Hospital, along with sister Priya Dutt. He arrived well before his appointment and stayed in his car until the doctor arrived. The extensive consultation with Dr Jalil Parkar, senior pulmonologist, lasted till 3.15 pm, following which the doctor and Priya left the hospital. Sanjay, however, was there for another two hours and left only post 5 pm in his car. It seems that the actor was at the hospital for another round of check-ups at the hospital.

On Saturday, the brother-sister duo visited the Kokilaben Hospital in Andheri for a brief period. The actor is expected to begin chemotherapy sessions there soon.

A week ago, he had checked into the Lilavati Hospital following breathing trouble. While he didn’t test positive for Coronavirus, it is believed that he was diagnosed with lung cancer. On Tuesday, the actor, who has four films on the floors and two up for release, had posted on social media that he would be taking a short break for medical treatment and promised to be back soon.

Sanjay Dutt has always been a fighter, says Maanayata after speculation over his health

Rachana Dubey (BOMBAY TIMES; August 13, 2020)

A day after Sanjay Dutt announced a break from films for medical treatment, his wife, producer Maanayata Dutt said the actor is a “fighter” who has always emerged winner amid adverse conditions, while urging fans to not fall prey to speculations. The 61-year-old actor was hospitalised at Lilavati Hospital over the weekend after complaining of breathlessness. He was discharged on August 10, and released a statement on Tuesday, announcing he would be taking a “short break” from work to focus on medical treatment. “I am taking a short break from work for some medical treatment. My family and friends are with me and I urge my well wishers not to worry or unnecessarily speculate. With your love and good wishes, I will be back soon!” he shared.

In her statement Maanayata said, “There is a lot that the family has gone through in the past years but I am confident, this too shall pass. However, it is my heartfelt request to Sanju’s fans to not fall prey to speculations and unwarranted rumours, but to just help us with their ongoing love, warmth and support. Sanju has always been a fighter, and so has our family. God has yet again chosen to test us to overcome the challenges ahead. All we seek is your prayers and blessings, and we know we will emerge as winners on the other side, as we always have. Let us use this opportunity to spread light and positivity.”

On the work front, three of his films — Sadak 2, Bhuj: The Pride of India and Torbaaz — will soon be released on OTT platforms. His upcoming projects include Shamshera, Prithviraj and KGF Chapter 2, which are in various stages of completion. The actor was also expected to team up with Arshad Warsi and Sajid Samji for a comedy later this year.

Wife Maanayata back home; confident this shall pass
MUMBAI MIRROR (August 13, 2020)

On Saturday, Sanjay Dutt was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Lilavati Hospital after he complained of breathlessness. He tested negative for Coronavirus and was discharged on Monday. But rumours have since been rife that the 61-year-old actor is suffering from lung cancer, more so after he posted on social media on Tuesday that he was taking a short break from work for some medical treatment.

A source from the Lilavati hospital informed that when Sanjay was taken to the hospital, he was low on oxygen saturation. “Fluid had accumulated in his lungs and because of that he was having breathing trouble,” said the source, adding that the fluid samples were sent for testing. “Doctors said it could be tuberculosis or cancer. The reports on Wednesday confirmed that Sanjay is suffering from stage 4 lung cancer.” Dr Jalil Parkar senior pulmonologist, who is treating the actor refused to comment on his condition.

Meanwhile, wife Maanayata and twins, Shahraan and Iqra, who were stuck in Dubai following the lockdown, returned to Mumbai on Wednesday, around 1.30 am. Later in the day, she released an official statement asking his fans and well-wishers to pray for the actor. “There is a lot that the family has gone through in the past years but I am confident, this too shall pass. Sanju has always been a fighter, and so has our family. God has yet again chosen to test us to overcome the challenges ahead. All we seek is your prayers and blessings, and we know we will emerge as winners on the other side, as we always have. Let us use this opportunity to spread light and positivity,” she asserted.

Buzz is, Sanjay has applied for permission to travel to the US for treatment. He could also fly to Singapore. But according to sources close to the actor, all decisions will depend on further test reports.

With Sanjay Dutt advised rest by doctors post hospitalisation, patchwork shoot of Ranbir Kapoor's Shamshera deferred?

Ranbir Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt
Uma Ramasubramanian (MID-DAY; August 11, 2020)

In the last week of July, Ranbir Kapoor had met director Karan Malhotra at Yash Raj Films studio to draw up the plan for the last leg of Shamshera's shoot. With only a few days of patchwork shoot remaining, the unit was to resume work on the period piece this week and had erected a set at the Andheri studio. However, Sanjay Dutt's ill-health has put the brakes on Malhotra's best-laid plans. After Dutt was admitted to Lilavati Hospital following complaints of breathlessness on Saturday night, it is heard that the director has deferred the stint.

A source reveals, "Sanjay sir has only three days' work remaining. While he was discharged yesterday, the doctors have advised him to avoid strenuous activities. He will rest it out for four to five days before reporting to work." Set in the 19th century, Shamshera sees Ranbir Kapoor as the leader of a dacoit tribe that revolts against the British Raj, with Dutt playing the antagonist. The film marks Kapoor's first double role.

Sanjay Dutt admitted to hospital due to breathing issues; tests negative for Coronavirus

BOMBAY TIMES (August 9, 2020)

Sanjay Dutt was admitted to Lilavati Hospital, Bandra, yesterday evening after he complained of breathing issues. The actor, who tested negative for Coronavirus, is under observation in the non-COVID ICU ward of the hospital. In a statement, the hospital said, “His COVID-19 report is negative, but he is still there for some time just for medical observation. He is perfectly fine.”

Sanjay took to social media to share his health update, and wrote, “Just wanted to assure everyone that I’m doing well. I’m currently under medical observation and my COVID-19 report is negative. With the help and care of the doctors, nurses and staff at Lilavati hospital, I should be home in a day or two. Thank you for your well wishes & blessings (sic).” The actor is currently alone in Mumbai, while his wife Maanayata and children — Shahraan and Iqra — are stuck overseas, owing to the pandemic.

Actor Sanjay Dutt was admitted to the intensive care unit of Lilavati Hospital after he complained of breathlessness. He was admitted under senior pulmonologist Dr Jalil Parkar.

Dutt was admitted with fluctuating oxygen saturation level and chest discomfort. He undertook the rapid antigen test for Covid-19, which returned negative. A swab has been taken for RT-PCR.

Sources said doctors are conducting more investigations and keeping the actor under observation.

“Just wanted to assure everyone that I'm doing well. I’m currently under medical observation and the Covid-19 report is negative as well,” the 61-year-old actor said in a brief statement posted on Twitter and Instagram.

“With the help and care of the excellent doctors, nurses and staff at Lilavati hospital, I should be home in a day or two. Thank you for your well wishes and blessings. Please stay safe, everyone,” he added. His sister, Congress leader Priya Dutt said the actor was taken to the hospital in the evening for a “regular check-up”.

The news came on a day when fellow actor Abhishek Bachchan was discharged from Nanavati Hospital, where he was being treated for Covid-19, after a 29-day stay.

The 44-year-old actor shared the news in social media posts on Saturday afternoon along with a photo of his healthcare board from inside the isolation ward. “I told you! Discharge plan: Yes! This afternoon I tested Covid-19 negative. Thank you all for your prayers and wishes. I'm so happy to be able to go home,” the actor wrote.

Bachchan also thanked the hospital’s medical team. “My eternal gratitude to the doctors and nursing staff at Nanavati Hospital for taking such good care of me and my family and helping us beat Covid-19. We couldn’t have done it without them,” he wrote.

I am realised how loved I am in these 14 days-Kiran Kumar

Veteran actor Kiran Kumar, 67, discusses how he and his family beat the Coronavirus through positivity and isolation protocols at home
Ankita Chaurasia (MUMBAI MIRROR; May 28, 2020)

Veteran actor Kiran Kumar needed to get an OPD medical procedure done, for which he was required to undergo a battery of tests, including one for Covid-19. Since he had been strictly following social distancing and displayed no symptoms, he was certain it would be negative. He tested positive. “I have faced so many adversities that I was not shocked. I’m prepared for every eventuality life throws my way. Acceptance is necessary, especially when dealing with such crises,” he points out, admitting that while his family was worried for him, they are an optimistic bunch.

The 67-year-old actor immediately isolated himself on the upper floor of his house, while the family stayed downstairs. The BMC authorities responded promptly, dropping by, testing everyone else and informing them about the protocols to be followed. “I told my wife to buy disposable utensils for me to eat in. My food would be prepared and kept on the staircase. I’d pick it up myself, eat and dispose off the plates, ensuring zero contact. I also made my own bed and cleaned the room,” he shares, adding that while he had the luxury of having an entire floor to himself, all you need is a room to isolate yourself. “You must wear a disposable mask and gloves every time you use the washroom, if it’s a shared one,” he warns.

Son of yesteryear actor and celebrated villain Jeevan, Kiran Kumar had started out in Bollywood as a hero, before a slump in his career took him to the neighbouring state where he attained a cult following and came to be known as the ‘Bachchan of Gujarati cinema’. Rakesh Roshan’s Khudgarz got him back to Hindi films, and with Tezaab and Khuda Gawah, he re-established himself as a villain. In a career spanning over four decades, he was once the highest paid actor on Indian TV.

The isolation left him with a lot of time on hand and he started reading books he didn’t have the time to read earlier. “My reading choices are quite outlandish in that I believe in aliens and enjoy my Asimovs (Isaac Asimov, American writer of sciencefiction). I also binge-watched Star Trek, Star Wars and some Hindi films,” he shares, adding that he also did a lot of introspection, which made him realise the value of relationships and how they have shaped him into the person he is. “I may be a known name but at home, my wife (Sushma) is the tigress. She never let any of us mope and my sister (Nikki), who has been pampering me like a kid, cooked my favourite dishes. My children (Shaurya and Srishti) have been tending to my every need while my support staff, Pramod and Jay, have also stood by me like a rock, instead of running away after finding out that I had tested positive.”

He adds that director Kamal Sharma, who’s like a brother, has kept him amused with frequent calls, and his gym buddy, Harsh, with e-papers and funny texts. “Smita Jaykar sent me healing energy and her husband Mohan has been praying for me. These 14 days have made me realise how loved I am,” he exults, quick to add that the doctors at Hinduja and Lilavati have also been very supportive while his brother-in-law, Dr Deepak Ugra, who’s a pediatrician, was a phone call away.

“Now that I have recovered and tested negative, I can say that Coronavirus is here to stay. We all have to learn to modify our lifestyles and start living with it. There’s no vaccine yet, so, the only way to contain it is isolation. Getting infected isn’t criminal; hiding it is,” he asserts, saying it’s important to be content with what you have and start appreciating the little things in life.

Aamir Khan comes to the rescue of National Award winner Shajith Koyeri battling for life

Koyeri, a recipient of the National Film Awards for Omkara and two Filmfare and two IIFA Awards, was admitted to Lilavati Hospital on Tuesday
Koyeri’s family called Aamir when no doctor examined him for hours after an MRI confirmed a brain stroke
Lata Mishra (MUMBAI MIRROR; September 9, 2018)

An intervention by superstar Aamir Khan saved the life of award-winning sound designer Shajith Koyeri, 44, who lay waiting for a doctor for hours at Bandra’s Lilavati Hospital after suffering a stroke on Thursday morning after being admitted with high levels of creatinine.

Aamir, who worked with Koyeri for mega-hit Dangal, arrived at the hospital shortly after midnight on Friday after Koyeri’s family contacted him. Upon learning that not a single doctor had examined Koyeri after he was wheeled out of MRI room, where a scan had confirmed a stroke, he decided to move the sound designer to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Andheri.

As soon as Koyeri’s family authorised him to take decisions on its behalf, he got in touch with industrialist Anil Ambani’s family, which owns and runs the Kokilaben hospital. By 3 am, Koyeri had been moved to the Andheri hospital and on Saturday, doctors said Koyeri’s condition was stable.

Koyeri, a recipient of the National Film Awards for Omkara and two Filmfare and two IIFA Awards, was admitted to Lilavati Hospital on Tuesday. Though he repeatedly complained of extreme uneasiness, his family alleges the hospital did nothing. Koyeri, according to the family, suffered a stroke on Thursday morning and that is when he was taken for an MRI.

While Koyeri was rushed to the intensive care unit (ICU), there were no doctors around to examine him, the family alleged, and the ICU staff kept saying they were waiting for a doctor to arrive. As Koyeri’s condition worsened, the relatives decided to seek Aamir’s help.

Sudhir Manikoth, Koyeri’s brother-in-law, said while a junior doctor noticed eye paralysis on Thursday morning, the patient was wheeled in for an MRI only at 5.30 pm. “Is this how you treat a patient who has suffered a stroke?” he asked. Manikoth also alleged that a cardiologist checked Koyeri six hours after the MRI scan.

Lilavati doctors, however, denied there was any negligence on their part. Dr Hemant Mehta, consultant nephrologist, said when Koyeri was admitted to the hospital he was on the verge of kidney failure. “He was diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome. He also suffered from piles, and had to be given blood transfusion to make up for the blood loss,” Dr Mehta said. It was on Thursday morning, Dr Mehta said, that his assistant noticed right eye paralysis and rushed Koyeri for an MRI. “Soon after Koyeri was shifted to the ICU, he also suffered a heart attack,” he said, and added that treatment for heart attack and brain stroke both were started immediately.

Intensivists, he said, were in touch with cardiologist Dr Snehal Kothari, who was out at a social function.

Dr Ajaykumar Pande, vice-president of Lilavati Hospital, said if relatives want to shift a patient to another hospital, it is their right. “But all allegations of delay in treatment are false. Our doctors are available round-the-clock,” he said.

Asked why Koyeri was not administered a clot dissolving injection, which must be given within five hours of a stroke, Dr Mehta said this was not done as the patient’s kidneys were badly damaged and because he suffered from piles. “The family was not willing to wait till the next morning when we had arranged for a neurologist to see the patient,” he said.

Neesha, Koyeri’s sister, expressed her gratitude to Aamir. “Had he not been there, who knows how bad it could have got?” she said.
