Telugu superstar Krishna passes away; industry mourns

Veteran actor Krishna died on Tuesday at a private hospital in Hyderabad, where he was undergoing treatment following a cardiac arrest. He was 79. Krishna, father of Mahesh Babu, was admitted to the hospital in the early hours of Monday. He was put on a ventilator and was being treated by a team of doctors. The actor died at 4 am on Tuesday, hospital sources said.
Ghattamaneni Sivarama Krishna, popularly known as Krishna, began his career in the early 1960s and acted in about 350 films. Krishna earned fame with his cowboy roles and by introducing advanced technologies in film-making. Noted celebrities from the film fraternity took to social media to express their condolences on the veteran actor’s demise.

Veteran actor Krishna, known in the Telugu film industry as ‘Superstar’, died on Tuesday in Hyderabad, a day after he suffered a heart attack and was hospitalised. The Telugu film industry has been in grief after the news broke. Several stars such as Chiranjeevi, Allu Arjun and Vijay Deverakonda, among others, visited Krishna’s son, actor Mahesh Babu to offer condolences.
Veteran actor Rajinikanth took to Twitter to pay his tribute. He wrote, “The demise of Krishna garu is a great loss to the Telugu film industry … working with him in 3 films are memories i will always cherish. My heartfelt condolences to his family …may his soul rest in peace (sic).”
Deverakonda tweeted, “Less than a month ago I met a sweet man, held his hand while he spoke to me about watching me on TV and his fondness - he only knew me as Deverakonda.. A SuperStar that my parents loved and enjoyed watching on screen, he left in peace (sic).”
Actor Ram Charan shared, “Heartbroken to hear that Superstar Krishna Garu is no more. He was a legend whose journey will be remembered forever . My heartfelt condolences to my brother @urstrulyMahesh, his family and millions of fans (sic).”
His family issued a statement: “It is with the deepest grief that we inform you of the passing of our dearest Krishna garu. He was a superstar in so many ways beyond the movie screen... guided by love, humility and compassion.”

Actor Suniel Shetty, even after 28 years of his debut, remains relevant. As an integral part of the Hindi film industry, he has observed the changes in there from close quarters. The biggest one according to him is that now showbiz has become more money-oriented.
“It was all about relationships before. It’s cold business and pure success that matters today. We blame groups in Bollywood. But according to me, they take calls, ‘Iski picture khareedunga’, it begins there. It is all about collection, maths, and that’s why it’s ruthless, it wasn’t so ruthless before,” he says.
On the unfairness of how particular individuals are being targeted for not allowing outsiders to flourish, Shetty says, “If you can’t deliver, investor says you are out... If you have to blame anybody, blame this system of money and the X valuations. Why are we blaming individuals? It’s so sad.”
The 59-year-old feels the way business happens has changed, too. “Earlier, for example, it would be my father and accountant. Now, there’s a CEO, CFO... my God, how many people handling the same thing! It’s investment vs return, not just entertainment. Achhi film banao aur chalne do... nahi, maths nahi kehta toh yeh nahi chalega... Kya kar rahe ho aap? You are curbing creativity. We have become too materialistic,” laments the actor.
Reminiscing how it used to be in his times, Shetty reveals that despite the fact that he didn’t know how to dance properly, the makers of Krishna (1996) spent a whopping amount on his song. “The song was Jhanjhariya. Suniel Shetty has two left feet, yet it was the biggest song in the history of Bollywood, then. The producers didn’t see the maths, they said, ‘Chalake paisa banayenge’. They made the film from their hearts, that’s why films ran for years. Maths can never dictate art or creativity,” the actor signs off.
Karisma Kapoor goes down memory 90s lane on Dance India Dance

This week, Karisma Kapoor returned to Zee TV’s Dance India Dance: Battle of the Champions to fill in for sister Kareena Kapoor—who is busy shooting for Angrezi Medium in London with Irrfan Khan—and was mighty impressed by Soul Queen. The all-girl group performed on her nineties chartbuster, “Jhanjariya”, from the Suniel Shetty co-starrer Krishna.
While it took her back to the 1990s, Karisma told the audience about the song, which was shot in two versions. “For the male version, we shot in the desert in 50-degree heat with sand flying into our eyes. The female version was shot in Mumbai in three days and I changed 30 outfits. Every look was different, and the steps were tough. It was an iconic song in that sense.”
It was an Andaz Apna Apna special episode and Shakti Kapoor, who had played Crime Master Gogo in the cult comedy, was a special guest. Host Karan Wahi shook a leg to one of his favourite songs from the film, “Yeh Raat Aur Yeh Doori” with Karisma, who had played one of the protagonists alongside Salman Khan, Aamir Khan and Raveena Tandon in the film.
