You feel people are judging you if you can’t feed your baby-Kishwer Merchant Rai

Sugandha Rawal (HINDUSTAN TIMES; September 6, 2021)

As a first-time mother, actor Kishwer Merchant Rai is always overwhelmed by every little move by her newborn, and admits that embracing motherhood has been a roller coaster ride.

Kishwer welcomed her first child, a baby boy, Nirvair, with her husband Suyyash Rai on August 27. “Every time, I see his face, I forget about all the things,” she tells us.

Ask her about the story behind picking the name, and she says that it came to her one night. “I used to have sleepless nights when Suyyash had Coronavirus, as he used to be in another room. One night, while listening to Ek Onkar, I messaged him the name, and he loved it.”

At the moment, Kishwer is on a road to recovery after the C-section delivery. Opening up about it, the 40-year-old says, “A woman’s body goes through so much in these nine months, and then comes a C-section. Then, you have to feed the baby, and there is no production of milk on the first three days. You get frustrated, on top of it, you feel people are judging you ki breast milk nahin de pa rahe ho.”

She adds: “After delivery, you can go into postpartum depression. That’s why it is important to be happy, but how? Because if you can't do anything for your child, you can’t be happy. But everything is fine now, I am back home, eating well and he is also fine.”

Amid these happy emotions, there are some overwhelming moments, too. “If I’m cradling him and he is still crying, I get emotional. I get anxious. There are many things which I will learn as I explore motherhood,” she concludes.

I hope Sonu Sood paaji likes our musical tribute. This is the least we can do for him-Ballraaj

Ankita Chaurasia (MUMBAI MIRROR; June 12, 2020)

Born out of the need to make people realise and be grateful for the privilege of staying at home during the Coronavirus pandemic, the song, “Shukar Kar” has now turned into a tribute to Sonu Sood. The actor, who has been sending hundreds of migrant workers from cities to their hometowns and also features in the song’s music video, has no idea... yet.

“If I had told Sonu paaji that I was dedicating the song to him, he would have forbidden me from doing so. So, I sent him the first few lines and asked him to record it in HD at home,” says Ballraaj. The comedian-host was inspired to turn the song into a tribute after he reached out to the actor and philanthropist with monetary help but instead, was encouraged to reach out to the needy directly in these trying times.

TV actors like Kishwer Merchantt, Prince Narula and Yuvika Chaudhary, and Bharti Singh and Haarsh Limbachiyaa, who were already part of the video, agreed that it would be an apt thing to do. Ballraaj further informs that once the song is edited with real-life montages of Sonu taking charge, he’ll show it to the actor.

Expected to release next week, the song was recorded by Suyyash Rai, Deepti Tuli and Oye Kunal from their homes. “I hope Sonu paaji likes it. He has single-handedly helped so many people. This is the least we can do,” he concludes.

Coronavirus lockdown: It's bas karo vs aur karo

With an overdose of celebrity photos and videos on social media, is the fatigue factor setting in? We find out...
Radhika Bhirani (HINDUSTAN TIMES; April 10, 2020)

Are you with Farah Khan, Rohit Shetty, Diljit Dosanjh when they say “Bas karo yeh workout, cooking videos” or you’re like, ‘yeh dil maange more’? Cooking, exercising, cleaning, reading, sleeping — by now we’ve seen celebs doing all that and more.

Recently, tennis star Sania Mirza asked, “Aren’t we done with posting cooking videos and food pictures yet? Just spare a thought — there are hundreds of thousands of people... starving to death.” Earlier, Khan posted a video ruing that “there are bigger problems to focus on” while Shetty took a jibe at those showing their “cooking skills”.

While that’s one way to look at it, there are also those for whom social media is a creative outlet to feed into the demands of their fans.

Fitness enthusiast Mandira Bedi said, “Some people are peeved about workouts from home being posted, but I’m going to keep posting mine.”

Even Kishwer Merchantt, wrote, “...I made this only coz I have been getting DMs asking me to make one. (sic)”

Meanwhile, Dia Mirza has a balanced approach. She says, “Some days, I feel like we’re witnessing The Truman Show. But I guess everyone has their way of managing this time.”

Yami Gautam adds in agreement, “Everyone has their way of being themselves, and have their own coping mechanisms.”

Digital teams of actors seem to be working overtime to ensure the content keeps trickling in. There are live chat sessions, recipe sharing, masterclasses, musical snippets etc being shared.

Manish Chopra, Director and Head of Partnerships, Facebook India, confirms, “There’s been a rise in the number of IG (Instagram) Lives, with views increasing by more than 60 per cent from the past week.”

Digital media and marketing entrepreneur Sagar Madhani says, “This phase is the most insightful as celebs are actually enjoying a real connection with fans”, while digital and experiential marketing expert Udit Bhatia opines, “Celebs are taking this time to focus on spreading positivity, which in the long run helps build their credibility.”

All the behind-the-scenes action from the star-studded Annual Colors Party

Sanyukta Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; March 14, 2016)

You can be certain that wherever the Bigg Boss contestants' head, they take their ego clashes with them. Three months after the show's finale aired, former inmate Mandana Karimi walked into the Colors annual bash with producer-boyfriend Gaurav Gupta and looked right through the other leggy women who had recently shared a roof with her.

Kishwer Merchant and Suyyash Rai also arrived together, wearing their hearts on their sleeves and didn't stir from each others' sides. The same cannot be said for former housemates-turned lovers-turned strangers, Armaan Kohli and Tanishaa Mukerji.

Tanishaa who made an eye-catching statement in a tangerine, two-tone gown with cutouts walked out as soon as her ex walked in. This didn't bother Armaan who was generous with his jadoo ki jhappis, hugging everyone from Gautam Gulati who looked like a green horn in a velvet suit to actor-host Arjun Kapoor who seemed happy to re-unite with the Khatron Ke Khiladi team. In fact, Armaan was the last celeb to leave the venue in the wee hours, in high spirits after shaking a leg.

The annual bash celebrating completion of eight successful years for the channel was a star-studded event hosted at a suburban five star. Varun Dhawan was the first to arrive and was immediately branded with a Brand Ambassador Award. On his way out he bumped into Anil Kapoor who is always willing to do a “My name is Lakhan“ on the red carpet. The two looked stylishly similar in navy blue checked suits and seemed to be telling each other “Check me out mate!“ Aditi Rao Hydari in a fuchsia gown and Huma Qureshi in an LBD made smashing hit-and-miss appearances. TV Czarina Ekta Kapoor arrived on time, hand-in-hand with actress Anita Hassanandani. Anita's actor-entrepreneur hubby Rohit Reddy tagged along with Jeetendra.

We got a jhalak of Madhuri Dixit too who was escorted by hubby Dr Sriram Nene and spent time chatting with co-judge Karan Johar whose shoes glittering in pink and gold sequins stole the spotlight from all the high heels around. No wonder Arjun stuck to tamer tan leather shoes.

Ayushmann Khurrana dropped by late in the night after wrapping up another SoBo event featuring Ranveer Singh but Malaika Arora Khan, currently in the news for her split with hubby Arbaaz Khan, gave the bash a miss. Ditto for Salman Khan and Kapil Sharma who has broken away to launch his own show on a rival channel.

So it was no Comedy Night but still a Colorful one!

Salman Khan introduces his horses to Bigg Boss 9 contestants

Sanyukta Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 28, 2016)

Bigg Boss Salman Khan invited the contestants of the reality show which ended its ninth season last Saturday for a day-long celebration at his Panvel farmhouse. Winner Prince Narula arrived with fellow contestants, Kishwer Merchant, Mandana Karimi, Nora Fatehi, Suyyash Rai, Priya Malik, Rishabh Sinha and Keith Sequeira. Rochelle Rao arrived with her family.

"We had been invited for lunch but the bash went on way past sunset. The day began with Salman sir introducing us to his horses, all 10 of them," recalls Kishwer, adding that Bhai made sure they remembered the names of his four-legged buddies, and when a contestant mixed up the names, he re-introduced them and raised an eyebrow every time someone pointed at his ghodas identifying them by their colour rather than their names... Prem, Rajkummar, Bajrangi, Bhaijaan. "The horses get so excited when they see him, they absolutely love him and are his fans."

The farmhouse is also home to dogs, cats and poultry. The gamers returned home with picture perfect mementoes. "I got the coolest selfie with the most humble human being," gushed Nora, Suyyash described it as "unshakeable gunda trio".

After the lavish buffet, Sallu's guests got to check out his mountain bike collection which they rode around Arpita Farms. His family left in the evening but Sallu asked his Bigg Boss stars to stay back for dinner. "It was a leisurely meal with everyone telling Sallu how he had changed their lives. I've always been an SRK fan but now I am Salman's greatest fan. The way he explained life and all the things that happen along the way, is wonderful. He's the most beautiful human being, I love him," says Kishwer.

I have feelings for Nora Fatehi and will pursue her-Prince Narula

Chaya Unnikrishnan (DNA; January 25, 2016)

He was strong and aggressive from the time he entered the show. Known both for fighting and flirting with his co-contestants, Prince Narula who has already won two reality shows — Roadies and Splitsvilla — had a competitive streak, and focussed on succeeding in every task. Even former contestants of this season bet on him beating the other finalists. Over to Prince...

This is the third reality show after Splitsvilla and Roadies that you are winning. Which has been more challenging?
Winning and losing are part of a game and every win motivates you to do better and surge higher. All the shows have their own place.

What were the high points and low points for you in the house?
The low was when Kishwer (Merchantt) left the show. The high was the fun I had during the task where we had to sit in a car for 44 hours and I was pulling the girls’ legs.

Kishwer was hurt that you did not mention even once that you would opt out in the ticket to finale task?
Actually, I did but that was edited out. In the one hour that we were given to discuss which of us will opt out it was Kishwer who urged me to stay. We were sure that either of us will win, but Kishwer said she will leave because I had already won two shows and had a good connect with the youth. Not only that she spoke positively about me even after she came out of the house. I considered her my sister in the house and that relationship will continue even outside.

Salman Khan took you to task quite a few times, especially during the task with Kishwer...
Yes, but he did that to point out where I was going wrong and guide me. He did that with everybody and treated all on par. He is the best host and there’s no fun in the show without him.

Initially, you came across as aggressive...
Yes, but I would also be the first one to apologise. When you are walking on the road and somebody annoys you, you can fight and move on or you can ignore him, but in the house you have to stay with that person whether you like it or not.

You were seen flirting with Yuvika Choudhary and Nora Fatehi....
(Cuts in) Yuvika is a friend but I have feelings for Nora and will pursue her now that I am out. Nora entered the house at a time when I was feeling low. She tried to bolster my spirit saying people outside liked me and I was popular and that I should continue to be strong. She brought positive vibes with her and I liked her.

Who did you think were your competitors?
Rochelle was good. Even Mandana who from day one said that she was playing a game.

What next? Any aspirations to do films?
I have signed a fiction show. It’s a love story set in college. After that I will try for films.

Any other reality show in the pipeline?
Nothing this year, but Khatron Ke Khiladi is something I have been wanting to do.

What are you planning to do with amount you have won?
Of the Rs 35 lakhs, I will donate Rs 5 lakhs to Being Human and give the rest to my father.

What happened with Nora Fatehi was real-Prince Narula

Prince Narula, who won the ninth season of a reality show, comes clean on his romance with a fellow inmate
Natasha Coutinho (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 25, 2016)

In the first episode, none of the contestants wanted to partner with you. Did you expect to reach this far?
I never cared what any of them thought about me. The audience, especially youngsters, loved me. I gave my all to the tasks and successfully changed people's perception of me.

You first proposed to Yuvika Chaudhary on the show and later romanced Nora Fatehi. Was it all for the cameras and TRPs?
What happened with Nora was for real. We'll see how it works out outside the house. I'm still friends with Yuvika, there was some misunderstanding and she was eliminated, so that relationship did not blossom.

Were you upset that your 'sister', Kishwer Merchant, had to leave the show so that you could stay on?
I was depressed after Kishwer took the money and left but I figured that since I had won two shows (Splitsvilla and Roadies) earlier and had a strong fan base, it'd be better if I stayed on.

Did you expect to beat strong competitors like Rochelle, Mandana and Rishabh?
I was surprised when Mandana was evicted as she was a strong, aggressive competitor. I was even more surprised when she said she hoped I'd win.

Previous winners haven't been able to make much of a headway, what are your plans?
I'll make my own destiny. Before entering the house I signed two shows for two channels. I'm moving to fiction now and begin shooting soon. And I have donated Rs 5 lakh to Salman's Being Human charity for earthquake relief in a bid to do my bit for society.

I love my 'Emraan Hashmi' tag-Prince Narula

Saloni Bhatia (BOMBAY TIMES; January 25, 2016)

After spending more than three months inside the house, Prince Narula was crowned the winner of Bigg Boss while Rishabh Sinha was declared the first runner-up.Prince tells us about his plans for the Rs 35 lakh prize money, his equation with the housemates and the 16 kilos that he has shed in the house. Excerpts:

WILL BE GOING TO THE GOLDEN TEMPLE TO THANK GOD FOR THE WIN
“I won't take a break. I'll start working soon. I will be going to the Golden Temple and Nakodar Sahib to thank God. I went there before participating in Mr Punjab, Roadies, Splitsvilla and Bigg Boss. I think wohi lucky charm hai (that is my lucky charm). My mom and dad are my good luck charms, too. I am also planning a vacation with Kishwer Merchant and Suyyash Rai before their wedding,“ he tells us. Ask him his plans for the prize money and he says, “I have donated Rs 5 lakh to Salman Khan's Being Human. I will buy something for my dad with what's left.“

I WAS THE CAPTAIN OF THE HOUSE MAXIMUM NUMBER OF TIMES
“I played the game in such a way that I wouldn't get evicted from the house before the finale. I knew that I won't have to leave because of lack of audience votes. Even the contestants were scared and didn't nominate me. In these three-and-a-half months, I was in the danger zone just thrice, and I was made the captain of the house three times, which is an achievement,“ he smiles.

I WILL BE SPENDING A LOT OF TIME WITH NORA
“Everyone thinks that the relationships formed on reality shows are fake. When we came out of Splitsvilla, Anukhi and I lost touch. Then I came to Bigg Boss and met Yuvika (Chaudhary). I told her that I liked her, but she asked me to focus on the show, and I backed off thinking that I was forcing her. After she left, Nora came and brought a lot of positivity. We actually have a connection. Yuvika is a good friend now. I will spend a lot of time with Nora so that we get to know each other. Falling in love is quite easy when you are in the house, but you get to know a person only when you step out. Nora and I are alike in quite a lot of ways,“ he says.

He was also given the title of 'Emraan Hashmi' for serial kissing on television. “I love this tag. I used to kiss people when they performed well, and even when they didn't. I am happy with the tag,“ he adds.

WILL FOCUS ON ACTING NOW
After his reality show streak, Prince says he wants to take up acting. “I will start trying for films. Before signing this reality series, I had signed two shows, so I will take them up,“ he says.

I CREDIT THIS WIN TO KISHWER
What sealed Prince's place in the finale was the task where Kishwer and Prince had to decide who would exit the house between them. Kishwer sacrificed her place for Prince. “I think they only showed a small chunk. We had decided that she should exit by taking Rs 15 lakh and I would win the Rs 35 lakh prize money. Kishwer told me that I had an advantage because I had won reality shows before this and have a young fan following. I credit my win to Kishwer. When it was announced that I won the show, I gave the trophy to her. That decision worked for both of us. But Kishwer was the toughest competitor,“ he adds.

I USED TO HATE SUYYASH AND KISHWER INITIALLY
In the first episode, when the contestants were being paired, no one wanted to pair up with Prince. He elaborates, “I told them, 'tum logon ne galti kari thi ki bina jaane judge kar liya' (you people committed a mistake by judging me without knowing me). All those people knew each other because they belong to the industry. When they saw me performing the tasks, they were scared. “Initially, I used to hate Suyyash and Kishwer because Suyyash Rai asked her not to pair up with me, but inside the house, we bonded really well because we belong to Chandigarh and Kishwer was like a sister.“

I decided to opt out. I was the bigger person-Kishwer Merchant

DNA (January 16, 2016)

Kishwer Merchant, who opted to leave Bigg Boss 9 with Rs 15 lakhs during the ‘ticket to finale’ task, had earlier said that fellow contestant Prince Narula is coming across as overconfident and that might not let him win the show. However, when asked about it, she denies it. “On the contrary, I want Prince to win the show. He is the only strong contender left. Yes, certain things happened between us where I felt he was wrong — no doubt I was hurt that he did not even once during the task say that he would leave. That was wrong considering the relationship we shared (like brother-sister). I would never speak like that about him,” says Kishwer. As for the reason she opted out, she says, “After 22 hours of the task, we thought Bigg Boss would cancel it, but after realising that none of us were giving up, he gave us an hour’s time to speak to each other and decide. If we had not taken a call, the housemates would have decided who among us would leave the show and I did not want to give them that right. Since Prince didn’t mention about leaving, I decided to opt out. I was the bigger person.”

Katrina Kaif, please stick to item songs as you're not an actor-Kishwer Merchant

DNA (October 7, 2014)

Enlarge ImageOther actresses are no fans of Katrina Kaif. Case in point: TV actress Kishwer Merchant who posted on Twitter, “I know I will get a lot of haters, but #KatrinaKaif please stick to doing just item songs because you are not an actor. Thank you.” Angry Kat fans started abusing Kishwer causing the actress to tweet again, “People who are not Katrina Kaif are reacting to my tweet more than Katrina... Woh toh ghar mein aaram se dinner kar rahi hogi...”

Wow! While we are still wondering what brought that on (couldn’t be publicity for Kishwer and Suyyash’s music video as that had released sometime ago). Katrina Kaif remained unavailable for comment. Cat certainly got Kat’s tongue on this one, no?
