Marathi filmmakers change release plans after stricter COVID-19 guidelines in state

Result? Three more Marathi films – Jhimma, Bali and Godavari – that were to hit screens this month have been postponed.
Jhimma director Hemant Dhome and Bali producer Kartik Nishandar had earlier told us that they were willing to go ahead despite the double-trouble of lesser shows and 50 per cent seating, because they didn’t want to delay their films any further. But, in a video shared a few days ago, the team of Jhimma said, “The film was ready, the teaser was out, and people were looking forward to watching it on the big screen. But the rising cases of COVID-19 and newer restrictions have led us to take a short break from meeting you at the cinemas. But, we’ll see you soon.”
Bali was touted to be the first Marathi film with a big star, Swwapnil Joshi, to hit screens after cinemas resumed functions a while ago. Speaking to us, Swapnil shared, “Honestly, now it’s all a game of wait and watch. We will release Bali in cinemas only, but when, well that’s a question we don’t have an answer to. Everything depends on the government guidelines. Till then, patience is the only virtue we need to abide by.”
Another much-awaited film that was eyeing an April 30 release was Godavari. The Nikhil Mahajan-film with Jitendra Joshi, Gauri Nalawade, Neena Kulkarni and Vikram Gokhale in pivotal roles, too, was deferred a few days ago with Nikhil and Jitendra sharing a heartfelt message about the same on social media. “The film is very close to all of us and we were looking to release it one day before Maharashtra Day (May 1). But, not anymore. Looking at the rising cases, restrictions and closure of cinemas, we are not even announcing a new date right now. Godavari has been postponed indefinitely and we’ll decide on a date when things are better,” Nikhil told us.
In the current scenario, it looks unlikely that filmmakers will announce new release dates anytime soon. Even if restrictions are eased in the coming months, there’s a backlog of films waiting to release. Filmmaker who’ve made their films only for the big screen aren’t contemplating OTT releases yet, but only time will tell if that decision will change.
Will COVID-19’s second wave drown Marathi filmmakers’ release plans?

While operating at 50% capacity and with all mandatory safety protocols in place, cinema halls have seen some new releases and decent BO collections. However, the rising number of Coronavirus cases in the state have led to the Pune civic authorities shutting, cinemas, malls, restaurants and hotels for a seven-day period. Certain restrictions have been in place for a while in other parts of the state as well.
This has led some April film releases to be postponed, due to lower footfall and lesser shows. The Amitabh Bachchan-Emraan Hashmi-starrer Chehre, which was to release on April 9, has been postponed, as has been Bunty Aur Babli 2, featuring Saif Ali Khan, Rani Mukerji and Siddhant Chaturvedi, which was slated for an April 23 release. The Hindi version of Haathi Mere Saathi, featuring Rana Daggubati and Pulkit Samrat was deferred last month, but it’s Tamil and Telugu versions got a theatrical release. There are unconfirmed reports of Rohit Shetty’s Sooryavanshi not meeting its April 30 release, but there has been no official confirmation about the same till the time of going to press.
With filmmakers deciding to play the wait-and-watch game, some Marathi releases from this month have been deferred, too.
NO POINT IN RELEASING A FILM IN THE CURRENT SITUATION: ADITYA SARPOTDAR, DIRECTOR
Touted to be the first zombie film in Marathi language, Zombivli features Amey Wagh, Vaidehi Parshurami and Lalit Prabhakar. Director Aditya Sarpotdar said, “In a situation where cinemas, including single screens, are not fully functional, I don’t think it’s advisable to release a film now. So, we are postponing the release of our movie indefinitely. When cinemas resume functions at full capacity and when people are mentally prepared to watch a film, we’ll think about the release. But we will have a theatrical release for sure.”

Free Hit Danka was supposed to release along with another Marathi film, Bali, and promotions were on in full swing for the same on social media. However, the makers have decided to postpone the release. Producer Sunil Magare told us, “We had all intentions of releasing the film as scheduled. But things are changing unexpectedly every few days. With the spike in cases, health should be everyone’s priority. Plus, looking at the response we got for the film’s teaser and songs, we feel that maximum people should be able to watch it, which is not possible right now. So, we are postponing the release and will announce a new date soon.”

The Swapnil Joshi-Pooja Sawant-starrer horror film Bali, directed by Vishal Furia, is the first big Marathi film to release after cinemas reopened. And the team is ensuring they stick to their schedule. Producer Kartik Nishandar said, “We had gotten an offer from an OTT platform for Bali during Diwali last year. But ours is a big screen release and we wanted to keep it that way. People need entertainment in their lives and filmmakers need to bring the business back on track. Of course, if occupancy was at 100% or if all cinemas were open, the response would’ve been even better. But even in the current capacity, we are not pulling out the film from theatres.”
WILL POSTPONE THE RELEASE ONLY IF A COMPLETE LOCKDOWN IS ANNOUNCED: HEMANT DHOME, DIRECTOR
Hemant Dhome’s upcoming directorial, Jhimma, shares its release with the Kangana Ranaut starrer Thalaivi. And like the latter, he is in no mood to shift the release any further. “Every other business is operating, so I don’t see why the entertainment industry shouldn’t, of course by taking all necessary precautions,” said Hemant. When asked if the early closing mandate will affect the number of shows, he replied, “Who knows, we might even get more shows because there will be only two films releasing that day. We all need to learn to live with COVID-19. What if for the next two years, the virus isn’t eradicated? Will we stop functioning for that long? We need to take all necessary precautions and keep going, because it’s a matter of livelihood for everyone. If the government announces a complete lockdown, then there will be no option for us but to defer the release. Until then, we are meeting you in cinemas on schedule.”

Poster of Gashmeer Mahajani and Pooja Sawant’s Bonus is endearing and fresh!

Producers Arjun Singgh Baran and Kartk D Nishandar of GSEAMS ((Global Sports Entertainment And Media Solutions Private Limited) are on a roll. After coming up with multiple films in 2019, they have now unveiled the first look of their upcoming Marathi film, Bonus. The film stars Gashmeer Mahajani and Pooja Sawant and both feature in the poster, released by the makers recently. This first look has a nice touch and indicates that the film can turn out to be a nice, slice-of-life romantic drama. The backdrop of Mumbai’s Worli Koliwada and Bandra-Worli Sea Link and the large suitcase on the side adds to the impact.
Moreover, the pairing has also been noticed. Handsome hunk Gashmeer Mahajani, in a very short span of his career, has carved a niche for himself with his recent films like Deool Band, Kanha, One Way Ticket and Mala Kahich Problem Nahi. Pooja Sawant on the other hand is also quite popular thanks to her films like Daagdi Chawl, Vrundavan, Poshter Boyz, Lapachhapi and even the last year’s Bollywood flick, Junglee. Both come together for the first time and the chemistry seems interesting, from the poster.
And not just that, Bonus is written and directed by Saurabh Bhave, who is also been appreciated for his skills in screenplay and writing. He had penned screenplay for many hit Marathi films including Haapus, Taryanche Bait, Hrudayantar and Chumbak, among others. He says, “Bonus is that extra bit that we all deserve - extra bit of money, joy and happiness, But unfortunately, some people are too privileged and some are not. Bonus tries to bring these two worlds together - The world of Haves and Have Nots. It is the joyride journey of a boy who, in the process of proving his worth, encounters with the whole new world that changes his life and beliefs upside down. It is story of his coming of age.”
“As the title suggests, it is about courage, audacity and the path differently treaded.Bonus will be another film which will keep our tradition of powerful story and star cast as witnessed in our previous films,” say Arjun Singgh Baran and Kartik D Nishandar of GSEAMS.
GSEAMS, a leading company in entertainment sector, had earlier produced Fugay, Tula Kalnaar Nahi, Ranangan, Vicky Velingkar and presented films like Bhikari. GSEAMS is one of the top studios in Maharashtra having its vertical spread across film productions and presentation, TV productions, talent management, movie marketing and promotion and satellite syndication.

Teaser of Sonalee Kulkarni-starrer Vicky Velingkar THRILLS the audience!

The talented and gorgeous actress Sonalee Kulkarni seems to be on a roll this year. She impressed audiences with her bubbly performance in Ti And Ti. On Diwali, she rocked the show with Hirkani, a film that’s doing great business at the box office. And now she is set to end 2019 with a bang with Vicky Velingkar. The makers released the teaser poster of the film on September 18, where only a part of Sonalee’s face was seen. Yet, it added to the intrigue.
The teaser of Vicky Velingkar is now out and it gives a slightly better idea of the film and it’s genre. It shows Sonalee’s character being chased by a mysterious and scary Mask Man in abandoned locations. What adds to the thrill is that Vicky is no damsel-in-distress. She seems determined to outsmart and defeat the Mask Man. The teaser is cut very well and it is sync with the film’s thrill element.
Vicky Velingkar is produced by Arjun Singgh Baran and Kartik D Nishandar of GSEAMS (Global Sports Entertainment And Media Solutions Private Limited) along with in association with Dancing Shiva, Pranay Chokshi, Anuya Chauhan Kudecha, Ritesh Kudecha, Sachin Maruti Lokhande and Atul Janardan Tarkar. Arjun and Kartik, while speaking about the promo, say, “The teaser has been well received on the social media and creates curiosity among the audience. The film is a one-of-its-kind experience in Marathi, and that is reflected in the teaser.”
It is directed by Saurabh Varma who made Hindi films like Maniesh Paul’s debut flick Mickey Virus, the action flick 7 Hours To Go and the unreleased comic caper Solid Patels. Saurabh reveals, “Vicky Velingkar is a comic book artist and a clock seller who entangles in an unexpected life mystery. The film is about a female underdog who rises against all odds.”
Besides Sonalee Kulkarni, Vicky Velingkar also features Spruha Joshi, Sangram Samel, Kettan Singh, Gaurav Devidas More and Vanita Kharat. It releases on December 6, 2019.
Chocolate boy Swapnil Joshi to be seen in an intense flick Bali-The Victim; teaser poster released!

One of the most popular and talented actors of Marathi industry, Swapnil Joshi, is mostly known for light-hearted films. But occasionally, he has surprised audiences with serious fares and with roles in which he has grey shades. Swapnil continues this tradition with Bali-The Victim, whose teaser poster released today. And it is so intriguing that it has already become a talking point. It depicts cross that too in bloody red colour. And there’s also blood dripping, which adds to the intrigue value.
Bali-The Victim is directed by Vishal Furia, who earlier directed the 2016 Marathi horror film Lapachhapi. It was his directorial debut and was a box office success. He also directed the popular web series Criminal Justice with Tigmanshu Dhulia. The producers of Bali-The Victim are Arjun Singgh Baran and Kartik Nishandar of GSEAMS (Global Sports Entertainment and Media Solutions Private Limited). They have produced films like Mogara Phulalaa, Fugey, Tula Kalanar Nahi and Ranangan and the upcoming flick Vicky Welingkar and they presented Bhikari.
Swapnil Joshi and the makers however refuse to share much about the film’s plot, thereby increasing the film’s curiosity. Swapnil Joshi says, “I had promised audience of Marathi films that I’ll explore new genre this year. This film is a small step taken by me in that direction. I am very happy to get into the horror space. Also, it’s great that I have got an opportunity to do it with my favourite people like Kartik, Arjun and an expert director in this field, Vishal. I am sure that we together could ‘scare’ the people and at the same time, give them an entertaining time.”
Vishal Furia meanwhile states, “Lapachhapi was well received by the Marathi audience proving that they love the horror genre. The response encouraged me to continue making horror films for them. With a star like Swapnil, who has been loved by the audience, on board and maverick producers Arjun and Kartik backing my second horror film, I promise to make it bigger and scarier than Lapachhapi.”
Lastly, Arjun Singgh Baran and Kartik D Nishandar say, “We are happy to venture into a new genre of horror films. What could be a better choice than having Vishal Furia as a director after his success as director of Lapachhapi. The film is considered as one of the top ten horror films in the country. We also have one of the top actors in the industry Swapnil Joshi in lead role. He is like a family member for us. Even for him, this would be an opportunity in his career to explore a different genre.”
