Festive weekend will see 30% to 40% of multiplexes open in Maharashtra

Mumbai: Around 30-40% multiplex screens will open by Sunday, on a weekend that will see a sole Hindi film hitting theatres. Though the state government had allowed movie theatres to reopen from November 5 at 50% capacity, merely a handful could do so due to logistical issues. Several multiplexes had cancelled their housekeeping contracts soon after the Coronavirus lockdown and some had even cut their power connections to avoid standalone connection charges.
Since the decision to allow reopening was sudden, a majority of owners are still struggling to get the logistics in place, besides a new revenue model based on the government’s 50% seating criterion.
Multiplex Association of India office-bearers say it will take a few weeks more to get all the 745 screens in the state to start screening films as they have to rehire staff as well as come up with a new economic model. While 575 are inside 150 multiplexes, the remaining 170 are single screens. Mumbai has 193 screens in 42 multiplexes and 66 are single screen theatres.
In Pune, 10 of the 30 multiplex screens will open this Friday, while in Mumbai and other parts of the state, only 30-40% screens will light up, said association secretary Prakash Chaphalkar. However, none of the single-screen theatres will open this weekend, he added. Chaphalkar said ‘Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari’ is the only Hindi film that will release this weekend.
In MMR, Navi Mumbai has 25 screens in six multiplexes, Thane has 10 screens in three multiplexes, besides four single screens, and Kalyan-Dombivali has eight single screens. Major players in the multiplex segment include Inox, PVR, Cinepolis, Carnival and Citypride.
Some owner members were of the opinion that if they opened without working out a financial model, they would incur more losses than during the lockdown period. With no other films either from Hollywood or local languages making it to the theatres this weekend, sources said deciding on content and revenue models that can survive in the new normal till full seating capacity is allowed has become necessary.

Actor is reaching out with essentials to the needy in Malegaon too, besides city suburbs like Bandra, Madh Island and Kalyan, even as he continues to support daily wage workers

Salman Khan was among the first Bollywood actors to lend support to the industry’s daily wage workers, directly transferring money to the bank account of 25,000 people registered with FWICE (Federation of Western India Cine Employees, a worker’s union). Soon after, the actor got in touch with CINTAA (Cine & TV Artists Association) to help out-of-work actors registered with the body, then, repeated the process with the lookalikes of B-Town’s A-listers as also vertically challenged actors registered with the All India Special Artistes Association.“Salman has transferred money to the accounts of approximately 32,000 daily wage workers from different sectors of the industry in April. Another transaction to the same lot will happen around May 15. He is transferring the money in installments to ensure a steady flow of income,” revealed a source.
On Sunday night, Salman posted a video of himself loading foodgrains and vegetables in bullock cart and tractors at his farmhouse in Panvel. Mirror has learnt that in the midst of Coronavirus lockdown, the actor has been supporting all the villagers living close to his farmhouse. “He has supplied rice, lentils, vegetables, eggs and foodgrains to over 1000 families in the villages around Panvel, some of the essentials are grown in his own farm,” the source acknowledged, adding that villagers have been asked to reach out to the 54-year-old actor or his team in case of an emergency or urgent need.
“He has also procured and distributed hundreds of sanitisers and soaps to the locals so they can maintain basic hygiene.”
The source goes on to inform that recently, some people from a slum in Kalyan reached out for help and Salman got basic food items supplied to the entire locality through his on-ground team working in the city. “Around 500-600 families in Malegaon, which is one of the hotspots in Maharashtra, also got grains and vegetables recently from him, as also hundreds of impoverished families in Madh Island,” the source informed.
Meanwhile, his father, Salim Khan, who is living in their Bandra apartment, is actively involved in signing the cheques and getting things distributed in Mumbai. Salman is also in touch with his politician friend, Baba Siddique, and his son, Zeeshan, to reach the needy in Bandra and other remote suburbs.
The actor’s manager, Jordy Patel, confirmed the news to Mirror, saying, “Yes, Salman is helping in whatever way possible, on a day-to-day basis.”

Kalyan Theatre Forced To Stop All Screenings

Mumbai police arrested
around 30 members of Shiv Sena, Rashtriya Hindu Sena and Bajrang Dal for
trying to disrupt shows of Shah Rukh Khan's starrer 'Dilwale' that
released on Friday at various venues across the city.
In neighbouring Kalyan, at Metro Junction Mall, Shiv Sena workers, under the leadership of corporator Navin Gavali and local leader Prashant Kale, even forced an Inox theatre to cancel all shows. Kale said, “We have asked the theatre owner to not show the movie as Shah Rukh has hurt the sentiments of the country with his statement.“ Khan had recently spoken out against intolerance.
In Mumbai, police said around 10-15 people turned up to protest outside Inox at Dadar. Cops, who were already on alert and had deployed precautionary bandobast at major cinema halls, arrested nine protesters. Similarly, in the late after noon, D B Marg police arrested around 13 persons for protesing outside Super Cinema at Lamington Road. Police said the protest was peaceful.
All the accused were booked under Section 135 of Bombay Police Act and later released on bail. In Goregaon East, a group of around 10 protested outside PVR cinema at Oberoi Mall around 9.30am. Police said the group dispersed in a short while and no case was registered against them.
