Kalki Koechlin delivered an AC to my place when I was low on finances-Gulshan Devaiah

KALKI AND
GULSHAN’S
LASTING
BOND

Actors Kalki Koechlin and Gulshan Devaiah revisit a friendship that’s grown with them — seasoned, steady and still going strong

Long before the spotlight found them, actors Kalki Koechlin and Gulshan Devaiah connected over their love for theatre. Their bond began not on film sets, but in green rooms and after-show hangouts. Later, they shared screen space in The Girl in the Yellow Boots (2010), Shaitan (2011) and Love Affair (2016), building on that early connection. Kalki was struck by Gulshan’s “stage presence”, while he admired her “goofy authenticity”. What began as casual camaraderie has since “evolved into a deep, enduring friendship” — the kind that feels like family.

JAB WE MET
Recalling their first encounters, Kalki says, “The first time I saw Gulshan was actually in a play called Butter And Mashed Bananas. It was written and directed by Ajay Krishnan; not only was he performing, but Gulshan was very good at it.”

Gulshan adds, “When I met her in Bengaluru, while performing the play, I didn’t know who she was, as she wasn’t that famous then. There was an ease about her; she was just so chill, and there was no fuss, though we didn’t become friends immediately.”

FOND MEMORIES
Recalling how Kalki has been there for him without even asking, Gulshan says, “We had just moved into a studio apartment, and one day, she had an AC delivered there. She somehow figured out that I was low on finances and did what she thought was best for me.”

Recalling the memory, Kalki adds, “He didn’t have to ask. Isn’t that how friendship works?”

On her fondest memory, Kalki recalls a house party they attended together, sharing, “We were once at a house party, and as soon as the title song from the movie Fashion (2008) played, we went wild. That was when we knew we’d be friends forever.”

THROUGH THICK AND THIN
Gulshan reflects, “I’ve seen her go through a lot in life. Many times, I used to worry or even disapprove of some boyfriends she had. After she separated from (filmmaker) Anurag Kashyap, there was a lot going on in her life. But then she became a mother, and it’s such a joy to see her as a mom.” He adds, “It’s beautiful to see your friends grow and mature in life.”

Kalki shares, “He’s just been there so often when I’ve been down. There have been times when I’ve stayed at their home (Gulshan and his ex-wife, Kallirroi Tziafeta). When I started dating my now-husband (Israeli classical pianist Guy Hershberg), I took 20 people to my mom’s house, and Gulshan was the one who managed everyone; he was the darling of the house.”

She continues, “We’ve gone on holidays together, seen each other through rough times, and even recently, he showed up at one of my interviews as a surprise.

HOW HAS THE BOND EVOLVED
Kalki says that over the years, the bond between the two has only evolved for the better: “When you’re young, friendship is about going to parties, and now it’s about people who make you feel safe, who don’t judge you.” Building on her thoughts, Gulshan adds, “We don’t need to talk daily or give gifts to each other. But I know she’s a well-wisher, and I’m there for her too; we’re those friends who show up if and when the other one needs us.”

BANTER AND NICKNAMES
Ask them if they have any special names for each other, Gulshan mentions: “She’s like a superhero to me and I call her Hulk-star because she’s the strongest woman I know. People think she’s carefree, but there’s a lot of character strength in her.” Kalki adds, “I call him Gullu out of my fondness for him.”

Love Again for Gulshan Devaiah, ex-wife Kallirroi Tziafeta: "We are dating, but taking it one day at a time"

Gulshan Devaiah and Kallirroi Tziafeta have decided to give their relationship a second chance. After putting an end to their eight-year-long marriage in 2020, the actors recently started “dating again”.

Devaiah feels the “separation was crucial” for their bond. “We couldn’t make it work the first time around due to certain reasons. But, those circumstances are not the same anymore and neither are we,” says the Guns & Gulaabs actor.

This time, the two have decided to take it “one day at a time”. The 45-year-old says, “The most amount of planning we are doing currently is about finding nice restaurants or holiday destinations. We are both careful about not overthinking our current situation.”

For his part, Devaiah is trying to balance his personal and professional life to give time to his relationship. “Not doing that contributed greatly to the deterioration of our marriage. Moreover, I understand myself better today. Individually, we’ve both grown into better versions of ourselves,” he signs off.

Though his marriage with Kallirroi Tziafeta didn’t work, the two are still ‘cordial’

During a telephonic conversation with Gulshan Devaiah, the actor mentions he was talking to his ex-wife, actor Kallirroi Tziafeta (33), before our call. The two tied the knot in 2012, but got separated in 2020. “My ex-wife and I are very much in love,” says Devaiah, adding, “We just couldn’t make it (the marriage) work. But, the love is there. I always knew that just love is not enough to make marriage work. Marriage is a responsibility, too. You have to constantly be willing to negotiate with each other to go through life together and that can be hard. That’s the only reason we are divorced.”

Devaiah maintains that they have a “cordial” equation and are constantly in touch: “We are very much in each other’s lives, but not like lovers. We adore and help each other.

Ask if divorce has changed the definition of love for him, and the 44-year-old replies, “Not at all”. Instead, he wants to fall in love again, but doesn’t want to chase it. “I am not seeking [it], but I am open to getting married again. I am not sure if I am open to having children, though,” he says.

The Badhaai Do actor explains how after coming out of a decade-long relationship, one needs to make space for a new person. “You have to give yourself enough time and space, too,” he adds.

Talking about his divorce, Devaiah elaborates, “I never thought my marriage would go wrong. Although I did see a lot of my friends’ marriages fall apart — Kalki-Anurag (actor Kalki Koechlin and filmmaker Anurag Kashyap) being the famous ones — I thought that won’t happen with me. But it did. We couldn’t make it work.”

Being married is not easy-Gulshan Devaiah

In 2012, Gulshan Devaiah tied the knot with actress Kallirroi Tziafeta, who is from Greece. About his marriage, he says, “Being married is not easy. There are always ups and downs. We are trying to figure things out.”

The actor, who has been married for seven years, explains, “I don’t have any siblings, and though I had a lot of friends while growing up, I was a loner. I am comfortable being alone and don’t get bored of my own company. The problem is that, in a marriage you may be in love with your partner, but you don’t know how to manage that person’s presence in your space. But, we are living and learning. As of now, we are together.”

Talking about his wife’s work, he says, “She is acting, teaching and developing her own theatre project. Our journeys are different and we try not to interfere in each other’s work."

Here's why Gulshan Devaiah was out of action for eight months

Following some power-packed performances, the actor was laid low after a skiing accident and is re-starting his career from scratch
Shravan Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; February 13, 2018)

Gulshan Deviah grabbed eyeballs with Bejoy Nambiar’s 2011 thriller, Shaitan, and went on to headline the coming-of-age adult comedy Hunterrr four years later as the bumbling Mandar Ponkse. Life was on a roll for the 39-year-old actor when he went to Kashmir to bring in his wedding anniversary on February 12, 2017. The following day, Gulshan was skiing on the snow-capped slopes of Gulmarg when he took a tumble that resulted in a broken knee, and he was to be confined to the bed for the next eight months.

Reminiscing about the unfortunate accident, the actor says, “I was just a beginner, on a 4.5 km run at 10,000 feet. The previous day I had done seven runs from 10 am to 4 pm, and even though I fell a few times I didn’t hurt myself. On February 13, I continued from where I had left off. After three runs I was exhausted but since I was feeling good, I decided to do one more before taking a break. After a kilometre I swerved to the left and my ski got stuck in the snow. The next thing I remember, I’m flying through the air.”

Usually the ski opens out when something like this happens, but in Gulshan’s case, his right knee twisted and snapped. “I knew something bad had happened as a shooting pain felled me,” he narrates, recalling his trainer and wife Kallirroi Tziafeta panicking as they watched him try to stand and topple over because of his knee.

Even as he was hoping it would turn out to be just a sprain; the actor was rushed to the local dispensary in a sledge and, with the help of pain killers, survived the night. “The swelling was so bad that even going to the bathroom was difficult. The doctors told me that the medial and lateral ligaments had been severely damaged and my anterior ligament was blown. I would have to undergo surgery but they needed to rehabilitate my leg first for three weeks by putting it in a straight brace which I could only take off while having a bath. I could barely walk,” he recalls.

After three weeks, Gulshan went into surgery and post-op couldn’t bend his knee even at 15 degree but the pain was gone. “The doctor said I was one in a thousand cases when it came to pain tolerance. I guess I had prepped myself well,” he slants a wry smile, going on to inform that the doctors had used a tendon to replace the ligament which, being much harder, usually needs a year to become more flexible. “After two months, the doctor assured me that my leg was healing well but I was out of work for eight months. I had to drop a couple of films and turn down two I might have done, along with several other offers. In the meantime I only focused on my physiotherapy. At times I would even over-train and then the doctor would tell me off,” he smiles.

Finally, Gulshan is back on his feet with Vasan Bala’s romcom Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota, which introduces Abhimanyu Dassani and Radhika Madan. “The physical training I had to undergo was a challenge as my leg was broken then. This is the only film I am doing and we should wrap it up by early March. It’s almost like re-starting my career from scratch after eight months of being out of action,” he signs off with a smile.
