Jugal Hansraj reunites with Masoom director Shekhar Kapur for Masoom: The Next Generation

Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur is reviving his 1983 classic, Masoom, for the new audience in a new way, with Masoom: The Next Generation. Veteran actors Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi have already been confirmed to be reprising their roles from the original film, and now HT City has exclusively learnt that another original cast member has come on board — Jugal Hansraj, who played Rahul, Naseeruddin Shah's onscreen son.
Jugal Hansraj made his acting debut as a child actor with Masoom alongside actor Urmila Matondkar. He played the innocent Rahul, whose entry into a typical family changes its dynamics forever. More than four decades after the film's release, Hansraj is now reuniting with his first director, Shekhar Kapur, as well as Shah and Azmi.
Speaking about the reunion, Kapur tells us, “There is something profoundly beautiful about coming home, not to a place, but to a story that has stayed alive in people's hearts for decades. Jugal was just a young boy when we made Masoom, and today, welcoming him back as an accomplished actor is both emotional and deeply fulfilling. Reuniting him with Naseer and Shabana is a reminder that some relationships transcend cinema. As we begin this new chapter, I hope audiences experience the same honesty, tenderness, and emotional truth that made Masoom so enduring.”
Hansraj resonates with the sentiment as he shares that he felt so happy when Kapur called him to offer the new film.
“Masoom has been a part of my life, my identity, for as long as I can remember. Even after all these years, I’m still that ‘Masoom boy.’ It’s been more than 40 years since the film was released, but people still remember the film with so much affection. I constantly get stopped by people even here in New York, and I’m told with a warm smile that their kids or grandkids listen to ‘lakdi ki kathi’. They meet me like I’m a member of their own family. I’m glad that I can be a part of this special family again. It’s like life coming full circle,” he shares with us.
Masoom: The Next Generation is a spiritual sequel to Masoom and will explore changing family dynamics, identity, and relationships across generations. Apart from the three actors, the film will also feature an ensemble cast including Manoj Bajpayee, Nithya Menen, and Kapur's daughter, Kaveri Kapur. Composer A R Rahman has come on board to compose the music and co-produce the project.
Jugal Hansraj on response to Nadaaniyan and Ibrahim Ali Khan: "People can be kinder"

Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; May 22, 2025)
Actor Jugal Hansraj has kept busy with OTT projects like the series Mismatched and recently the film Nadaaniyan, where he played debutant Ibrahim Ali Khan’s father.
When probed about the negative online reactions to the film and Ibrahim’s performance, he tells us, “The feedback can be constructive, not personal. People can be kinder, and that’s lacking sometimes.”
He adds, “Being in films is a public job. One has to be ready for criticism as well as the praise. You take everything in your stride and just move on.”
However, he adds, “I am very happy with the response. It was a good experience working with the team.”
Considering he has ample experience in the industry, did he have any advice for Ibrahim? “He’s a wonderful guy, very well-mannered. It was an absolute delight to work with him. The affection towards him, the fatherly affection, came naturally,” says the 52-year-old.
Over the years, Jugal has been selective about the work he associates himself with. Now that he is doing back-to-back projects on OTT, is this the busiest phase in his career?
He says, “I get a lot of different kinds of roles now. Mismatched featured me as a flamboyant character. Nadaaniyan was a doctor-father. Mismatched was my first big OTT show. I have a couple more releases this year.”
Jugal Hansraj defends Ibrahim Ali Khan, Khushi Kapoor amid Nadaaniyan backlash

HINDUSTAN TIMES (March 27, 2025)
The recently released Ibrahim Ali Khan and Khushi Kapoor-starrer Nadaaniyan met with criticism, with many social media users mocking the lead actors’ acting skills as well as the film’s dialogues. Actor Jugal Hansraj, who played Ibrahim’s father in the film, has defended the newcomers.
Talking about the trolling that Khushi and Ibrahim faced after the release of the film, Jugal told India Today Digital, “Criticism should be constructive. If somebody who knows about cinema or has some experience in the field has a show or an article where they write about what worked and what didn’t, that’s something one can learn from. But on social media, I’ve noticed that there are a lot of personal attacks, which are not criticism. It’s just being silly and petty. Who am I to say it’s bad? I just say it didn’t work for me or I didn’t connect with it. But some people proclaim as if they know everything”.
Jugal asserted that actors in earlier times didn’t face such scrutiny because of the absence of social media. “They were given space and time to grow and improve. There was equal awkwardness in all of us when we started off, but because of the lack of social media, there wasn’t this unfair scrutiny.”
Taking Ibrahim and Khushi’s example, Jugal adds, “Now, unfortunately, young actors - not just these two, but many others - are under intense spotlight... Personal attacks are not cool. If you have something constructive to say, please say it. That kind of feedback helps actors learn and improve. But personal attacks about appearance get murky and messy. I’m obviously not in favour of that kind of critics”.

Parampara. Pratishtha. Anushasan. And the magic of first love. It’s been 20 years to Mohabbatein, the feel-good college romance. We get its actors to take a trip down memory lane

The mood would be grateful, given that in such times we have amazing things to commemorate. But it doesn’t feel like 20 years have gone. I was 18 and this film was a learning experience under Aditya Chopra. I’ve found good friends in Jimmy and Preeti. You don’t get to make such memories and such films often.
Jugal Hansraj
On one hand you had the whole strict Gurukul and Mr Bachchan. Then there was the middle ground in Shah Rukh Khan’s character. In us, there were the wide-eyed youngsters. We were told to lose weight, get small haircuts, sleep well and look fresh. All six of us have good memories, it was a lot of hard work but good fun too.
Jimmy Sheirgill
I remember, right from the rehearsals all six of us did, to the first scene, with the three of us looking out of the window — Uday, Jugal and I. Initially, people were saying ‘You should reduce the film’s length’, but Aditya was clear, ‘I’m making a film, trying to tell a story, I don’t want to cut anything. If it works, it works, if it doesn’t, it doesn’t.’
Preeti Jhangiani
I never auditioned for Mohabbatein. Aditya saw me in music videos, and my dad and I went to meet him in his office. The film was a training ground. We were young on set and had fun. I remember Mr Bachchan would sit with us and say, ‘I enjoy spending time with youngsters, not the oldies’.

It is a very surreal feeling. I was so raw at that time, but it was a beautiful experience. I loved the end product on the big screen. I made some beautiful friendships, and am still in touch with most of them. I was someone who always loved watching Yash Chopra’s films, and it was a dream debut. I couldn’t ask for anything better

Juhi Chakraborty (HINDUSTAN TIMES; September 6, 2020)
It’s been a while since Jugal Hansraj shifted base to the USA. The actor, who was last seen in Kahaani 2 (2016), says though he misses being in front of the camera, he isn’t desperate.
“I have really enjoyed doing my work, but there are a lot of important things in life. I mean yes, being out of sight, out of mind is a fear, but I hope people who want to work with me will reach out. People who want to remember you will do so anyway,” he shares.
Citing the example of director Sujoy Ghosh, who helmed his last big screen outing, Hansraj says, “Before Kahaani, my last film was almost nine years ago. But he did offer me a film, didn’t he? He had even offered me Jhankaar Beats (2003), but I could not take it up then as I was doing another film. So, it shows that if somebody has to think of you, they will.”
Hansraj, who has also helmed two films — Roadside Romeo (2008) and Pyaar Impossible (2010) — is looking at the prospect of developing web content in India.
“I am in Mumbai every three months, but because of the Coronavirus pandemic, I haven’t been to Mumbai since March. I am developing a series for an OTT player along with producers and directors, working with a writer to creatively oversee and develop the project,” he adds.

Actor Jugal Hansraj, who started his career as a child artiste in the Naseeruddin Shah-Shabana Azmi starrer, Masoom, married his girlfriend, Jasmine, in Oakland, Michigan, on Saturday. He is expected to return to Mumbai towards the end of the month and a party is being planned to celebrate the occasion.
Jugal and Jasmine's wedding was a planned ceremony, attended by family and close friends. They wore Manish Malhotra's designs. However, the designer couldn't make it to the wedding as he is busy preparing for a fashion show to be held in Delhi.
Said Manish, "A month ago, Jugal came to me and asked me for a wedding outfit. I asked him who was it for. It was then that he told me that he was getting married! Since I've worked with him on a film and know him quite well, I readily agreed."
Malhotra designed a classic blue kurta and a sherwani for Jugal, while Jasmine picked up her dress from his store in Delhi. "Jugal wanted something very simple so I stuck to a classic blue. It was something that went well with his personality," he said.
As for the bride, the designer added, "I haven't met her, but from what I've heard, she's a great woman. I'm sure the wedding must have gone beautifully and I'm guessing that celebrations will commence once Jugal returns to the city."
Close friend Uday Chopra wished the couple on Twitter, saying, "My friend Jugal Hansraj just got married yesterday in Oakland, Michigan to Jasmine...wish the couple a very happy married life."
When contacted, Jugal said, "I'm not in the country and can't talk right now. I'm not comfortable discussing my personal life."
