Global cinema and niche festival films becoming mainstream in theatres-Sanjeev Kumar Bijli

After a long summer break following the Cannes Film Festival, we are once again seeing news and highlights from film festivals around the world. Venice, Telluride, and Toronto each host their prestigious film festivals within weeks of one another, showcasing and awarding some of the best global cinema across various categories. Although these festivals may have once seemed relatively obscure compared to the glamorous spectacle of Cannes, they are now gaining prominence and popularity, not just for their films but also for their elusive red-carpet moments. As these festivals rise in stature, their red-carpet events increasingly capture public attention, with stars making bold statements both in fashion and social values.
This year at Venice, Amanda Seyfried wore the exact same Versace ensemble that veteran actress Julia Roberts donned – a spirited and intentional nod to sustainability. By choosing to re-wear a famous ensemble, Seyfried not only paid tribute to Julia Roberts but also promoted sustainable fashion practices on one of the industry’s biggest stages.
Notably, there has been an abundance of reviews for films participating in the competition, generating anticipation for their upcoming fall and winter releases – a season recognized for its substantive content as compared to the lighter offerings prevalent during the summer. The films featured at these festivals frequently emerge as leading contenders throughout the awards season as they continue to receive acclaim and build momentum in subsequent months.
One of the most significant releases this year is Chloe Zhao’s adaptation of Hamnet, featuring Paul Mescal and Jesse Buckley, which has received exceptional reviews. Following his mainstream role in Gladiator 2, Paul Mescal returns to independent cinema with both Hamnet and History of Sound, each drawing strong acclaim on the festival circuit. After earning a Best Actor nomination for his performance in Aftersun, Mescal may be considered for another nomination for his portrayal of William Shakespeare in Hamnet. Zhao, previously awarded Best Director for Nomadland in 2020, continues to receive industry recognition.
At the recently concluded Venice Film Festival, Benny Safdie was awarded the Golden Lion for Best Director for his real-life drama The Smashing Machine. Dwayne Johnson’s transformative performance as UFC wrestler Mark Kerr could result in his first major acting nomination. The awards have traditionally recognised actors for substantial physical and emotional transformations undertaken for their roles. Emily Blunt also delivered a compelling performance as Kerr’s insecure and desperate wife, potentially positioning her for a Best Supporting Actress nomination.
Park Chan Wook’s No Other Choice has garnered widespread acclaim and positive reviews. While lengthy standing ovations at festivals are sometimes seen as promotional tactics rather than true indicators of quality, No Other Choice appears to be an exception, receiving consistently favourable feedback. With Korean cinema’s growing recognition by the Academy Awards, this year may see No Other Choice achieve significant success.
Lynne Ramsay’s Die My Love, featuring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson, is a noteworthy film on the festival circuit this year. Having received a standing ovation at Cannes, it has garnered significant attention for Jennifer Lawrence’s compelling and deeply nuanced portrayal of a new mother experiencing post-natal depression. While the film may not appeal to all audiences, Lawrence’s performance is particularly distinguished.
Anticipation also surrounds Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, with Jacob Elordi cast in the unconventional role of the creature. Although the production may not be positioned as a major contender for industry awards, it promises to be a visually impressive cinematic experience, even if its release will not be limited to traditional theatrical venues.
Additionally, Luca Guadagnino returns with After The Hunt starring Julia Roberts. Guadagnino’s commitment to producing diverse stories at a remarkable pace continues to set him apart as a director. While this film may not receive widespread recognition during awards season, it is expected to attract interest due to its accomplished director and prominent cast.
The landscape of contenders for the awards may further evolve as more films get released. Following a successful summer featuring box office hits such as Jurassic Park, Superman, and F1, audiences now have the opportunity to appreciate a range of distinctive and exceptional films from around the world.

For her second appearance at Cannes, Aditi Rao Hydari has been channelling her inner modern-day princess. The actress spoke to us from the French Riviera about her experience this time around.
Aditi said, “It feels surreal to be at Cannes during the film festival, and though it’s my second time here, I am still new to this. The pressure can take over, but it’s important to have fun and celebrate. I was multitasking and shooting till the day I got on the flight. I was sleep deprived and had no time for fittings or any prep, but I have a great team, and we are winging it.”
When asked if there were any faux pas from the past that she was particular about not repeating this time, she replied, “In other people’s eyes, we are always making mistakes, but we can’t live our life by what others think about us. We have to be truthful to ourselves and our intentions. We need to celebrate life and be happy. The only thing I have control over is intent, and like last year, this year too, my intention was to just be authentic about what I was wearing, enjoy the red carpet and not feel daunted by the massive expectations of the ‘Cannes red carpet’.”
Aditi says, “I don’t want to live by other people’s standards of beauty. To me, it is about upholding your self-respect, pride and dignity and empowering yourself and other women.”
She adds, “The prep was so stressful last year… like which designer are you getting, how big is he/she, what colour is your gown? I was a bundle of nerves and so was my team. At some point, we all got in a team huddle after we landed in Cannes. We got a coffee and decided to stop stressing ourselves and take it as it comes. That was a good learning lesson. This year, the lead up to Cannes was calmer.”
'Seeing Jennifer Lawrence in flip-flops made me happy'
I saw Jennifer Lawrence in flip-flips on the red carpet and it reminded me of what I had said in 2012. I had just started off and was doing various events for my film London Paris New York. I was wobbly and tripping while walking in heels, as under the carpet, there were cobblestones. I decided that one day, I would walk the red carpet in sneakers or flip-flops.

Aditi Rao Hydari, who walked the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival for the second time, looks back on her debut at the film festival last year as “daunting”. She says, “Last year, it was all new to me. I kept telling myself that I would just wear what I like and I’d make sure to be myself. That made me feel more comfortable. This year, I was shooting till the last day before I left. I didn’t even get the time to prep.”
While it was the Oscars earlier this year that put the spotlight on India, and now Cannes, the 36-year-old feels that appreciation back home comes before international validation. “It’s amazing that we won two Oscars, but I do believe that we don’t always need recognition from other people. It is important to take pride in who we are, root for our traditions, art, culture and history. We should celebrate it and realise our own worth. It’s important that we celebrate each other and what we have to offer,” says Hydari, who has received appreciation for Jubilee and Taj: Divided by Blood.
Being at a film festival that features multiple celebrated films, does she get the time to catch a few? She says, “I am new to this and my schedules are tight. I have a lot of responsibilities and they are my first priority. It is a lot of fun to walk the red carpet; it feels special. Maybe as time goes by and I do this more often, I’d be able to make time to be a festival buff, roam around with a backpack and watch the films I want to.”

With Hollywood embracing inclusivity, Don’t Look Up actor Himesh Patel on working with Leo DiCaprio and Jen Lawrence

EastEnders star Himesh Patel acknowledges that not everyone can narrate the kind of tales to their grandkids that he can. “I can tell them I met Meryl Streep,” he laughs.
Born to Indian parents, Patel features in Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up that has an all-star cast, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Timothee Chalamet, and Ariana Grande. Streep also features in the Netflix offering, but Patel did not have the opportunity to share screen space with her. “I worked with Leo and Jennifer. Leo is hard-working and committed. He had ideas of how we could improve the scene, and he was, of course, correct. He leads by example,” says Patel.
The satirical science fiction drama follows two astronomers who attempt to warn mankind about an approaching comet that will destroy the planet. “Comedy is about taking familiar concepts and twisting them. Adam has a precise vision, but is collaborative, and wants everyone to have their [say].”
Apart from the success that Priyanka Chopra has achieved on international turf, Anupam Kher, Kunal Nayyar and the like have opened doors for other brown actors to establish themselves in Hollywood. Patel agrees that he is “a beneficiary of this period where [filmmakers] are inclusive and broad minded”.
However, the British actor of Indian origin believes there are still doors to be opened. “I’m looking forward to breaking down some barriers. There is a deep history between India and Britain, and there are a lot of stories that need to be told. I hope they will see the light of day.”

When quizzed on her perfect man, Kiara Advani stated that he should have the wit of Jennifer Lawrence, look like Hrithik Roshan and have the discipline and stamina of Akshay Kumar. Done? Not yet. “He should have money like the Ambanis and the talent of Farhan Akhtar and Ayushmann Khurrana,” she quipped. Now, that’s a really tall order!
The revelation was made when she was on Neha Dhupia’s chat show. One of the fittest actresses in B-Town, Kiara confided that it’s because she dines daily on bhindi (okra), kaddu (pumpkin) and salmon. “I don’t think anybody eats bhindi with salmon; even my mum finds it weird. It’s a taste I have acquired and love,” she asserted, adding that she even sneaks her bhindi curry into gourmet restaurants in Bandra.
Her attachment to food is so extreme that she becomes angry without it. “My dad tells me to always carry a box of nuts to munch on while my mom says that my true colours come out when I haven’t eaten,” Kiara shared, describing herself as a split personality. “I start getting hungry around 12 noon but lunch break happens around 1.30-2 pm. So, when they see me, my team slowly starts sneaking out of the vanity van.”
Any phobias? Birds. Kiara confessed that she can never do a song like Sonam Kapoor’s “Masakali” and if anyone asks her to do so, she would walk out of the film.

Ever feel that you are growing up far too quickly?
I do feel that sometimes, but then I also have a huge childlike side to me, which will always be there. I am also an old soul… (says matter-of-factly)
Do you get time to do all the things that you want to do?
Not entirely. Like I miss things like walking on the road or going to many places that I would go to earlier.. like a restaurant. My favourite restaurants have changed and my fav haunts have become more high-end now… Those particular addas I used to go to, I can’t now… I can’t go and sit in a coffee shop as it gets crazy! But then it’s not like that I have a problem with it. I love my life and have no complaints whatsoever!
When was the last time you went to a theatre to see a film?
It’s been forever since I went to a theatre. And I want to go! I love going to theatres and watching films. Like so many new films have released, which I am dying to see at the theatre. It’s been a while. I may have mild Attention Deficit Disorder, but otherwise I am quite focused.
One thing about your job that you dislike?
I can’t be as honest as I want to be. Sometimes you want to say things, but you can’t say them? I am forthright like that, but then, I also try to be a little correct about what I say. Many times, a lot of sentiment is involved. I am someone whose opinions change from time to time. Like one journalist told me the last time I told her I worry about the fat on my toe! I am like ‘Oh God! That’s so not me right now.’ I am worried about other things now. Like for me, now, it’s about how internally fit I am, or how my skin is looking or how my hair feels, what my energy level is at the end of the day, how I feel getting up early in the morning. I like waking up at 7 am today and sleeping at 10.30 pm. I have always been an early riser, but it’s a routine I want to follow.
Besides your own film, one film you are really looking forward to?
Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. I am a big Sooraj Barjatya fan! I have watched all his films and love them. I loved the PRDP trailer. I love the way he makes his films...
I can’t see you as a Sooraj Barjatya heroine. They are…
(Interrupts) Elegant?
Traditional.
I don’t come across as traditional? I’m sure once Sooraj puts me there, I can be or do anything. I think that’s the definition of an actor — he/she should be able to act like this or that, you are not a person doing that scene, but an actor.
If there’s one thing about yourself you could change, what would that be?
I think I should learn to be more graceful (grins). That’s something I need to become before I do a Sooraj Barjatya film. I need to get grace in my body language. I am working on that through my pilates.
A Hollywood actress you admire?
Jennifer Lawrence. Because of her unique and raw personality and because she’s a fantastic actress.
You’re shifting to a new house...
I haven’t shifted yet. I will be staying with my sister so I won’t be absolutely alone. I am apprehensive because I have to look after everything in my house — from maintenance to repairs and furniture. I have to pay my bills! You don’t think of all these things when you are doing up your own doll’s house! There’s so much more than just going into a new house. It’s a big step for me.
Do you know how to cook?
Not at all. Don’t stress me out! (laughs) But I can learn how to cook. I know how to make a good sandwich and a dip, though.

Shekhar Kapur is all set for a royal reign on television. The writer-director recently announced a "huge" TV series on Cleopatra and is currently scouting for an actress to play her. "I'm travelling all over the world. I may have to change my email id soon with all the pictures flooding in," he laughs. "It took me eight months to find Cate Blanchett to play Elizabeth. I hope I find my Cleopatra sooner."
The role has become synonymous with Elizabeth Taylor after she starred in the 1963 historical. Shekhar is looking for a younger actress to play her from the age of 18 to 39. "She was not Egyptian but of Greek descent. From her statues, Cleopatra looked a little like Jennifer Lawrence which is not to say that we'll be going to her, she would be too busy," he says. Shekhar points out that everything we know about the Queen was from the Romans who saw women as subordinate to men and hated her. They believed she was an evil seductress who made Julius Caesar and Marc Antony fall in love with her. The series will re-image her history and show her as a brighter, richer and better administrator-ruler than the men of her time. "I see her as a powerful woman, a conqueror, like my Elizabeth and Bandit Queen. The series will retell her story," he asserts.
Does he view her death as murder or suicide? "It was suicide. Octavian Augustus, the Caeser then, defeated her in battle and wanted to take her to Rome in chains to destroy her myth. But before he could do so, she died with a snake—the symbol of spirituality, infinity and motherhood— at her breast. Even in death she stole the show from Augustus. He was a great ruler but no one remembers him. They remember Cleopatra and the myth she created," he reasons, adding that he is in talks with four channels and hopes to start filming soon.
But before Cleopatra he will film another TV series on William Shakespeare. "It's the Bard's life story. I have Baz Luhrmann's screenplay writer, Craig Pearce, who worked with him on The Great Gatsby, Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge!, collaborating with me," exults Shekhar, pointing out that today's feature films are all about franchises. "They are entertaining but not the best stories. The best dramas, like Breaking Bad and Orange Is The New Black are playing on TV. Even in India, people are hooked on western TV series which are drawing the best directors."
With his futuristic fantasy drama, Paani, expected to set a shooting date by October, how will he juggle three projects? "Only two episodes of the TV series, House Of Cards, playing on Netflix was directed by executive producer David Fincher. After that, it's a new director every week. I will direct the first two episodes, then, since I have conceived and worked with the writer, I will oversee the two series and focus on Paani," he says.

Blind dates can be tricky. But when hitlist approached Saqib Saleem and Manasvi Mamgai separately to be part of a Valentine’s Day feature, they took the proposal sportingly. As the date for their rendezvous inched closer, both of them seemed impatient to know who their blind date was, but we managed to keep it a secret till they met at a suburban restaurant on the eve of V-Day.
Saqib arrived a few minutes after Manasvi reached the venue. When they saw each other, the actor did a subtle fist pump while the beauty queen-turned-actress went ‘yay’ — after all, they have been friends for quite some time now. The look test done, they embarked on their first ever blind date. Excerpts from their conversation:
Saqib Saleem: Hi Manasvi, how have you been?
Manasvi Mamgai: Great. What have you been up to?
Saqib: Chilling, till I start shooting for my next film with Huma (Qureshi, sister) in April. Then I am doing a
sequel to one of my earlier films. You are going down South, I hear?
Manasvi: I may, but I have two films lined up here. So, are you a Valentine’s Day person?
Saqib: Totally. What’s wrong with that?
Manasvi: Nothing! What do you like to do?
Saqib: Find a date, go out with her and have a good time.
Manasvi: What are you doing this February 14?
Saqib: I haven’t decided. I will probably go out for dinner.
Manasvi: You have to find a date first!
Saqib: That I will. Your plans?
Manasvi: I have to make an appearance in Kanpur.
Saqib: So fly your date to Kanpur and have fun. You know, I was so curious about my blind date. I thought I will escape quietly if it was someone I didn’t want to meet.
Manasvi: Same here! What has been your most disastrous date till now?
Saqib: I have had many. Once, I forgot to carry my wallet. It was so embarrassing.
Manasvi: Once I dropped my drink on the guy’s crotch and never met him again.
Saqib: How was Valentine’s Day while growing up?
Manasvi: Not great. I was dark and a national level skater. My knees were always bruised. Did you do a lot of V-Day stuff?
Saqib: Of course. It may sound very cheesy but there was this senior in college I was besotted with. She knew I liked her. I went to my friend’s place, decorated it and recorded a video of mine reminiscing about time spent with her.
Manasvi: Did she say yes?
Saqib: As a matter of fact, she did. We dated for two years. If there was a Valentine’s Day when we weren’t in the same city, I would sing some lines that I wrote, record it and send it to her.
Manasvi: You should sing now.
Saqib: I can’t!
Manasvi: You should, you are on a date!
Saqib: Now you will regret coming here. ‘I am a gangster baby, am a gangster baby…’ (sings Manasvi’s song from her debut film Action Jackson). Your turn now.
Manasvi: Why? I never said I sing.
Saqib: Tell me what is the craziest thing that you have done?
Manasvi: See, Valentine’s Day is a man’s day. But I have done some stuff, like successfully making pasta and pizza for this guy. The flip side was that I had to cook it again and again because he liked it. Which actress would you like to go on a Valentine date with?
Saqib: I am with one now.
Manasvi: I meant a dream date.
Saqib: None from Bollywood. Even if I had someone on my mind, I wouldn’t tell you.
Manasvi: So, then Hollywood?
Saqib: Jennifer Lawrence. Who will your date be from the fraternity? Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Ryan Gosling?
Manasvi: Ryan Gosling, of course. From Bollywood, it has to be Hrithik Roshan.
Saqib: I have had the biggest crush on Kareena Kapoor since I saw her. I know she is married and happy…
Manasvi: But you can go on a friendly date with her.
Saqib: I know I can’t date her, but it’s okay. Who would you not want to date?
Manasvi: Tusshar Kapoor.
Saqib: Can you say that again? A little louder, please!
Manasvi: No! (laughs) Your turn.
Saqib: Rakhi Sawant, Poonam Pandey, Sambhavna Seth… everyone I know from Bigg Boss.

Manasvi: He has strangely been nice to me. Tell me, what is the craziest thing that you have done to woo a girl?
Saqib: I have already told you about that — cleaning up my friend’s house and recording my messages.
Imagine cleaning a guy’s house! I mopped his room which was really dirty.
Manasvi: Which has been your best date so far?
Saqib: I don’t want to sound preachy but for me it doesn’t matter where I am or what I do on a date. I can be at Juhu Chowpatty and have a great conversation over pav bhaji. You?
Manasvi: I was dating this guy and we went to Rishikesh, did a bit of rafting and lit up a bonfire on a full moon night.

Will Jennifer Lawrence & Bradley Cooper attend Serena's premiere at Mumbai Film Festival?

The Mumbai Film Festival has finally got its opening film. Mirror has learnt that the Bradley Cooper-Jennifer Lawrence starrer, Serena, will have its premiere in Mumbai on the festival's opening day, October 14.
Helmed by Danish director Sussane Bier, best known for the Oscar-winning film In a Better World, the film is an adaptation of American author Ron Rash's novel by the same name.
The American-French production is a romantic period drama set in the Depression-hit North Carolina of 1930s with Cooper and Lawrence playing newlyweds whose lives are upturned when Lawrence's titular character learns that she is unable to conceive and takes the anger out on her husband's illegitimate son.
Confirming the news that Serena will open MAMI's 2014 edition, festival director Srinivasan Narayanan told Mirror, "We wanted to start on a romantic note, so Serena, which is a gorgeous romantic period piece, became a unanimous choice. The film hasn't released anywhere across the globe as yet."
Interestingly, Serena was to feature Angelina Jolie in the lead role and was to be directed by Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky. But the project never kicked off with that pairing, landing instead with Lawrence and Cooper, who have already collaborated on two Oscar nominated films, Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle.
When asked if the two stars will be seen in the city on the opening night, Narayanan said, "An official invitation has been extended to them and efforts are on to bring the cast to Mumbai. Oscar-winning Hollywood actress Jennifer Lawrence is not part of Shekhar Kapur’s 150 crore magnum opus, Paani. Speculations were rife after it was reported that Lawrence has been approached for a role opposite Sushant Singh Rajput. But when we asked Shekhar, he replied with a concise, “No, Jennifer Lawrence has not been approached.”

Jennifer Lawrence might star in a Bollywood film. The Oscar winning
actress has been approached to be part of Shekhar Kapur’s Paani.The project is being produced by Yash Rraj Films and is based on a future world where wars over water have broken out. Paani tells the story of a future dystopia in which water is owned by international corporations, who use thirst as a weapon of control, while the wealthy squander it decadently. The story centers on young lovers who defy the rules and try to make the water flow back to its people. The film’s cast will have both Indian and Western actors.
According to an insider, “Paani will be an expensive film. The budget would be close to `150 crore. To justify that kind of a money, the film will have to do good business all around the world, and not just in India. Getting someone like Jennifer will ensure the film attracts eyeballs internationally as well.” It was always clear that they needed a Hollywood actress for this role. What worked in Jennifer’s favour are both her popularity and her acting prowess.
In October, Kapur was in LA doing a screen test for Paani and he tweeted, “Full day of auditions for Paani in LA. Range of talent in young actresses is quite amazing and even the biggest stars are not shy of auditioning.”
Newcomer Sushant Singh Rajput will be paired opposite Jennifer. Singh stepped in after Hrithik Roshan walked out of the film.
