Jassi Gill talks about learning language for Sonakshi Sinha-starrer Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi, in 15 days

Apart from enjoying a steady music career in the industry, Jassi Gill is taking his first step as an actor in Bollywood with the upcoming comedy, Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi. Slipping into the role of a China-based Punjabi boy, Gill tells mid- day he underwent a 15-day training to learn Mandarin to do justice to his part.
“Mandarin is difficult to learn, so nailing the dialect is another story. Initially, it was difficult to understand it, but I worked hard to pronounce the words accurately. I watched many videos in the language with English sub titles. Once I learned the language, I worked on enhancing the diction prior to filming,” says Gill, who trained with a Canadian friend.
The actor enjoys a thriving career in Punjab, both as musician and actor, but — like Diljit Dosanjh — was bitten by the Bollywood bug. “I love working in Punjabi films and am grateful for the love I receive. Being part of Bollywood was a dream; the industry welcomes people with open arms.”
It may be suggested that Gill hit the jackpot with his debut venture, given that he shares screen space with Sonakshi Sinha. Admittedly delighted to have worked with his “favourite actress” he says he “often sang Punjabi songs for her since she is a fan of the music”.
Diana Penty, who headlined the first instalment, also features in this one.

Gauahar Khan is set for
not one, but two film releases this year, where she plays
the lead -Punjabi film (Oh Yaara Ainvayi Ainvayi Lut Gaya and Bollywood
movie Fever).“They will release around the same time, which is in a
couple of months and the best part is that my look is diametrically
opposite in both,“ she says.
Her Punjabi film is a love story and a full-on commercial entertainer. So, how did the film come about? “I was getting a lot of offers from regional cinema. As an actor, I have never restricted myself from doing things other than Bollywood. I have done Zangoora for two-and-a-half years. It's a live stage show and the world's biggest musical. I did Bigg Boss. The fact that I got such a fabulous script where I'm paired opposite Jassi Gill, a superstar in Punjabi cinema, made me take it up. I obviously couldn't take this route in Bollywood because this industry tests you a lot! I had to prove my mettle as an actor and that's why I've done more character-centric roles, be it Rocket Singh: Salesman Of The Year, Ishaqzaade and Game, two of which were critically acclaimed.“
Learning Punjabi wasn't a problem for her. She says, “Jassi Gill really helped me with that. Everyone on the set says I am the expat that never was an expat. I am a I hardcore Punjaban!“
Her look in Oh Yaara..., is Indian, very different from what people associate her with. “People have not seen me like this... a girl with her dupatta flying, kheton mein bhaag rahi hai. I should be getting a lot more roles after this. I'm looking forward to that. I want to run around trees!“
In Fever, where she plays the lead opposite Rajeev Khandelwal, she has a European look. “Nobody has seen me like that. Both are per formance-oriented roles. Last year, it was all about me winning hearts with Bigg Boss. Inshallah, I can win hearts this year with my films.“
