Suniel Shetty on reprising his iconic role in Welcome To The Jungle: "People have created several memes on Yeda Anna"

Recreating his iconic comic character in ‘Welcome To The Jungle’, Suniel Shetty on exploring the role differently; giving back to his Tulu roots with ‘Jai’

He is suave, eccentric, unpredictable, and violent in nature. That is Yeda Anna — Suniel Shetty’s iconic character from the hit 2005 film Awara Paagal Deewana — in a nutshell. Now, he is gearing up to bring this crazy persona back to the screen with Ahmed Khan’s Welcome To The Jungle. So, if you suddenly hear the actor saying, “Yeda hoon par tera baap nahin hoon!”, don’t be too surprised. This week, Shetty wrapped up a schedule of the ensemble comedy in Film City, Mumbai.

This week, Shetty wrapped up a schedule of the ensemble comedy in Film City, Mumbai. “All of us are in every scene, so the humour is for each and every fan of all the stars.”
Welcome To The Jungle features Akshay Kumar, Jacqueline Fernandez, Raveena Tandon, Mithun Chakraborty, Disha Patani, Kiran Kumar, Farida Jalal, Arshad Warsi, Lever, Rawal, Tusshar Kapoor, Krushna Abhishek, and Shreyas Talpade, among others.
There is another reason why Shetty is on a high — for being called the complete man in a recent clothing brand’s ad and his debut in the Tulu film industry with Jai, which has “opened on an excellent note”. Doing the film — which is also released in Kannada — is his way of giving back to his Tulu roots, he says. “I did this film because it’s a small film industry, it needed the recognition. I didn’t take a single rupee for it because I wanted to give back [to my community],” says the actor, adding that ultimately only content can elevate a film. With the barrier between regions diminishing, good content will always thrive, irrespective of its language, he shares.

Tulu at heart, Suniel reveals his motive is to raise awareness about his mother tongue and culture

After a 30-plus-year career, Suniel Shetty is making his debut again — this time, in Tulu movies. The senior actor recently completed shooting for Jai, a political thriller directed by Roopesh Shetty. Although the actor only has a cameo in the film, where he plays himself, he holds it close to his heart.
“I make a difference as I talk about my love for the state. It’s about my karmabhoomi and janmabhoomi as I owe a lot to both,” says Suniel.
The actor — who hails from Mulki, a town near Mangaluru — was happy to shoot the cameo free of charge, as he wanted to do his bit to raise awareness about his mother tongue. He shares, “I want Tulu to be an officially recognized language by the government. I want people to know about Tulunad and its culture. The region has a high literacy rate. Once people learn about it, they will realize it is one of the most beautiful coastal areas. It’s not a big deal [that I did] not take money; I wanted to promote my region and culture.”
Last week, the senior actor also received the Changemaker of the Year Award 2025 — From Entertainment To Entrepreneurship, presented by Google for Education and Viksit Bharat. The recognition highlights how he went beyond a successful career in films to become an entrepreneur. He is the owner of several restaurants and a lifestyle brand.
“Awards will come and go. What is exciting is that I’m a part of the council chair. It is a huge responsibility to help build a nation of one million founders in the years to come.”
Satish Kaushik planning a prequel to Sholay

Actor-filmmaker Satish Kaushik is planning the prequel of Sholay.
The script is based on a book written by Shantanu Dhar of the same name. Dhar has previously written the book, The Company Red.
Kaushik says, “The book narrates how a policeman, Baldev, becomes Thakur Baldev Singh. It explains why he became a cop to save his village from the dacoit Gabbar.” Though the focus is on Thakur Baldev Singh, Kaushik’s film will also have the characters of Jai and Veeru (which were played by Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendera). Kaushik adds, “Jai is an unemployed youth who ends up in jail where he meets Veeru.”
While Dhar informs, “The character of Soorma Bhopali (which was played by comedian Jagdeep) is also part of the story.” Kaushik feels that Ajay Devgn or Salman Khan are best suited for Thakur’s role. He is also in talks with Sholay 3D producers Jayantilal Gada and Sascha Sippy about the prequel.
