Pehli baar life mein kisi ne most beautiful bola, says Jackie Shroff on PETA recognition

Pehli baar life mein kisi ne most beautiful bola: Jackie on PETA recognition
Navya Kharbanda (HINDUSTAN TIMES; January 3, 2024)

Actor Jackie Shroff responds to being declared the most beautiful vegetarian of 2023 by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India (alongside actor Zeenat Aman) in signature ‘bhidu’ fashion.

“Pehli baar kisi ne life mein most beautiful bola, mujhe bahut achcha laga. Maine apna chehra mirror mein wapas se dekha, ki kahan se beautiful lagta hoon main yaar,” laughs Shroff, who was recently seen in the slice-of-life film Mast Mein Rehne Ka (2023), adding, “I think they meant that the work I’ve done is beautiful. I never expected that such an award would come my way, but thanks to PETA for giving me the honour. There are many people like me but they chose me, what do I say.”

Lately, the actor’s rise in the pop discourse as a congenial, plant-gifting culinary guru has been noteworthy. He credits his mum for his vegetarian lifestyle. “Jab se mujhe yaad hai main vegetarian hi hoon. Jo mujhe apni maa ke haath ka khaana achcha lagta tha, aaj bhi wahi khaana khaata hoon. Zyada khaane ki aadat nahin hai, din mein ek hi baar khaata hoon. If I feel like it, I eat fruits and I mostly drink sattu,” says Shroff, adding that he finds the vegetarian diet easy on the digestion.

Does he aim to inspire fans to adopt a vegetarian lifestyle in any way? “I don’t want someone to preach this and I don’t want to go and tell people ki non-veg khaana band karo. Mujhe dekh kar agar kisi ko lagta hai ki yeh kha kar bhi aap healthy reh sakte ho, then I would feel good,” he adds.

Elaborating on his philosophy, the Atithi Bhooto Bhava and Phone Bhoot (2022) actor says, “It’s not just about being vegetarian, but agar koi stray dikh gaya, unhein utha ke help kar dena, there are many things that one can do. I like petting animals — be it cows, dogs, cats, goats or hens. Jab main inki aankhon mein dekhta hoon, mujhe pyaar aata hai unke liye. No one has the time to look into their eyes because everyone is busy looking at their phones,” he wraps up.

Main joh bolta hoon woh khaneka aur healthy rehneka bhidu-Jackie Shroff

Onkar Kulkarni (BOMBAY TIMES; September 28, 2023)

Jaggu dada is loved for his bindaas attitude, swag and charm. But now, people on Insta are lapping up his simple and easy-to-dish-out recipes. A casual video where Jackie Shroff shared his anda-kadi patta recipe (eggs with curry leaves) went viral, post which the actor doled out a few more recipes. Soon, videos of netizens trying their hand at his recipes started doing the rounds. We spoke to Jackie Shroff about the love he’s getting for his culinary skills and the popularity his recipes have garnered.

“Bhai, yeh digital world aisa hi hai, idhar muh khola toh udhar sunayi diya, America mein,” says the actor about the power of social media. Talking about how what’s cooking in his kitchen has been inspiring many, he says, “Did you know that I always wanted to be a chef! And imagine if digital media was there back in the day, then, I would have got a job easily, given how my videos are going viral.”

‘I enter my friends’ kitchens to see what ingredients they use’
Every time he travelled outdoors for shoots, Jackie would cook for his cast members. “I would go to the hotel’s kitchen and see how the food is being made. Not just that, I have a habit of entering my friends’ kitchens to see what ingredients they use, the kind of utensils they use and how they cook. Of course, most of them don’t want me in their kitchen (laughs). When I cook, I ensure that fewer utensils are used, so that less water is utilised to clean them. I enjoy going to Danny (Denzongpa’s kitchen). The food there is nutritious and healthy,” he shares.

‘I follow my mom’s nuskhas to make healthy food’
Shroff’s recipes have become popular as they are easy to make, and he uses a few and simple ingredients. Be it the bhopla (red pumpkin) recipe or the bhindi (okra) dish, those who tried the recipe couldn’t stop raving about it. He credits his mother for his culinary skills.

“From a young age, I have seen my mother cook very closely. I can still smell the aroma of her food. She had her nuskhas to make the food healthy, and I follow those. After all, parents want their kids to be healthy and strong. So, I see to it that the vegetables are not heavily cooked as it destroys all the nutrients. I am happy ki meri recipes dekhke bachchon ko kuch achcha sikhne mil raha hai. I usually do wok fry or steamed recipes... toh main jo bolta hoon woh khaneka aur healthy rehne ka bhidu,” he says.

‘I like making drumstick soup for Tiger and Krishna’
Jackie loves cooking healthy meals for his son Tiger and daughter Krishna. The actor, who finds the process of cooking very calming, says, “I often cook with organic produce from our farmhouse. I like making drumstick soup for my kids, where you boil drumsticks in water using a little ginger and garlic. It is delicious and nutritious. Now, Krishna is learning to cook. Tiger is always on the move and Krishna loves to cook for him. She’s the one who mothers my boy a lot.”

Shraddha Kapoor and Disha Patani can pull off both, western and Indian, with elan-Jackie Shroff

Jackie Shroff
Deepali Singh (DNA; October 29, 2018)

Putting together a red carpet appearance is the job of the stylist these days. But think of some of the most effortlessly stylish men in Bollywood — at a time when there were no stylists around — and Jackie Shroff’s name is sure to be right up there somewhere! With his bandhgalas, bandhani, tie-and-dye shirts and trademark scarf around his neck, the veteran actor has been looked up to for his unconventional choices when it comes to his clothing and style.

MAKING DISCOVERIES
In the actor’s case, however, fashion wasn’t exactly up on the priority list during his youth. “I was a skinny, odd-looking boy,” he shares, “We didn’t have much money to buy clothes. So, I would fashion a shirt out of mom’s old sari or get a trouser stitched out of the extra fabric from a curtain. So, it was all about mix-and-match and people started noticing and appreciating it — nobody had seen a shirt or pant made of curtains!” he guffaws. Now, of course, the actor wears clothes he’s comfortable in. “I like my boots and my jackets. I believe it’s the way you carry yourself that matters the most. So many people sport jeans, but it’s how you wear them that makes all the difference,” he avers.

JACKIE’S FAVOURITES
Whom does Jackie find the most stylish among the younger lot? He says, “When it comes to Indian wear, I like Shraddha Kapoor and Disha Patani can pull off both, western and Indian, with elan.” His all-time favourite, though, remains Madhuri Dixit-Nene for the way she carries any outfit and that million dollar-smile that elevates everything she wears. “Wear anything, but never forget to wear your smile,” the actor says. As for the men, besides his son Tiger Shroff, who he thinks looks dapper when he dresses up for any occasion, thanks to his good physique, it’s Varun Dhawan whom he finds stylish as he’s an easy-dresser. “But Danny Dengzongpa is the coolest and most stylish of the whole lot put together!” he concludes.

They now call me Tiger's daddy-Jackie Shroff

It has been 32 years since he debuted as a `Hero' and Jaikishen Kakubhai Shroff, better known as Jackie Shroff, says it is yet to sink in
Noyon Jyoti Parasara (BOMBAY TIMES; October 9, 2015)

What do you prefer being called - Jackie Shroff or Jaggu Dada?
I really don't know. What's there in a name! Some people call me Jai, while others call me Jaggu, Kishan, Jackie or Bhidu.

People say you have not changed a bit in the last 30 years. What keeps you grounded?
I think the fact that I was close to my mother, and observed how she used to deal with people, has kept me grounded. I didn't realise I would become an actor and then a star. That it's been 32 years and I've done so many films is yet to sink in!

Your son Tiger is a star as well...
His success makes me happy. I have seen my glory and now, it is his time. When we are together, it is obviously Tiger people look at now. When I go out, a lot of people and their tiny tots call me Tiger Shroff's daddy.

You are known for your sense of style. Who do you think is the most stylish man in the industry today?
Danny Denzongpa knows exactly what to wear on what occasion. He is one of the most immaculately dressed people we have in the industry.

Tell us about your passion for cars.
I had cars which I used to really like. Maybe I was an idiot and should have rather invested in apartments. I developed a passion for cars when I was a kid. I found a tyre on the street and I figured that I could roll it successfully. That made me love wheels.

After Devdas, you are sharing screen space with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in Jazbaa...
It has been a long time since we worked together. Jazbaa is Aishwarya all the way. She has done a great job and is looking fantastic. I was there watching while she shot for the film and I think she has got more sparks. An actor keeps growing and she is superb.

People still talk about your chemistry with Anil Kapoor. Who else are your best friends in the industry?
My real friends are Danny Denzongpa, Dimple (Kapadia) ji and Amrita Singh. I meet Danny more often than the ladies. As far as Anil Kapoor is concerned, when we meet, we are buddies and when we don't meet, we are not buddies. We have worked together and we pass off as brothers. When there is absence of malice, you have friends all around you.

Your film Hero was remade recently...
What we did was 32 years ago. What these guys did is new. He (Sooraj Pancholi) has the innocence and a great physique. She (Athiya Shetty) is lovely. Both are my friends' kids and both my children are their friends. You don't have to compare Jackie with Sooraj or Meenakshi with Athiya. They have their own style and we had our own. We wish them all the best.

When do we see you working with Tiger? Do you intend to make films?
No, I don't. And I can't plan a film with Tiger. It will happen when it happens. I hope to see ourselves together too, so that there is some kind of memory left behind for his children!

Me & Ayesha romanced a lot; it was hot, hot romance-Jackie Shroff

Priya Gupta (BOMBAY TIMES; April 28, 2014)

Jackie Shroff, 57, was born stylish. He is emotional, reckless and practical and has superstardom written all over him. He is all giving like his mother and has the face of his father and the only man he considers more stylish than himself is his friend Danny Denzongpa. Over an hour-long conversation with Bombay Times ahead of his son’s debut in Sajid Nadiadwala’s Heropanti, he speaks about the pain of losing his mother, his all-giving wife Ayesha and why Dev Anand was a true legend. Excerpts:

Let’s talk about your childhood?
My father Kakabhai Haribhai Shroff was an astrologer. My father was a Gujarati and my mom Turkish. My mom came from Kazakhstan, where there was a coup and she, along with six sisters and my nani, came down all the way down to Ladakh where they slept on a chatai on ice, down to Delhi and then Mumbai where she met my dad and they got married. My dad was from a wealthy pearl trader’s family. But he, his brother and one more gentleman got into some share thing, where they lost a lot of money. My dad took the blame and was thrown out of the house and he came and lived in this small one-room place in Teen Batti at Malabar Hill, where I was born. I had an older brother, who died when he was 17. I was 10 then. My brother was a mill worker and had just got a job a month back, when he drowned saving another man’s life. He jumped into water even though he knew that he did not know how to swim. My mom was shattered. My father had predicted that he should not go to work that day, but it was meant to happen and he went despite his warning. My brother was a big daddy in our area. I remember once a watchman had slapped me and I saw my brother hit him with a belt. I lost both my parents a few years back. I first lost my father and then my mother soon after. They both lived with me till their end. My mom got a stroke and I didn’t know. When we lived in a small room at Teen Batti, if she coughed I could hear and could immediately say, ‘Kya hua mom, kya hua pa?’ When we moved to a bigger house in Bandra, mom had her room, papa had his room and I had mine and so I came to know in the morning that she had died. If I’d come to know in the night I could have taken her to the hospital. Toh kya mila, kya gaya maloom nahin, samjha na baahu? I loved my mom too much. But I always ask myself that if I loved her so much, why didn’t I burn myself with her. I get vivid dreams about my mother thrice a week. I go to my old house in my dreams and go sit with her and press her feet, sitting down besides her. I touch my mother’s photograph every morning after taking a shower and show her picture to the sun as she used to pray to the sun every morning. I lived in a small room till the age of 30 where 30 people shared one bathroom. Our room was so small that once one of my friends, who was producer GM Roshan’s son, gave me Bachchan sahab’s seven suits from a film his father was supposed to make with him. But when I got the suits home, there was no place to put them. Today I have two bathrooms to myself. I still get so much love from people. And professionally nothing bothers me. I don’t like throwing my grief on anyone and so don't have an emotional anchor. But losing my mother was my biggest loss in life and even today she remains to be my biggest strength.

Talk about your wife Ayesha?
Ayesha is half-French and half-Bengali. I first saw her when she was 14 or 15 standing at a bus stop. I saw her lovely legs. The bus stopped, I stopped and I said, ‘Hi.’ And I said, ‘My name is Jackie.’ She said, ‘My name is Ayesha.’ I said, ‘What do you do?’ She said, ‘I have come to meet my boyfriend.’ I said, ‘I have come to play on the playstation.’ And it started off from there. We romanced a lot and it was hot, hot romance. We partied hard, she had a deadline. We used to see to it that we would go to Matheran together and spend time together and we were good friends. She was a fighter. If she saw any of my friends getting bashed up, she would also get into it and beat them up along with me. She was a rough little kid. The first time I met her, she had a snake in the pocket. She read an ad in the paper to play Ashoka in a film, where I would have to give my picture and 20, and she said, ‘I think you can be a good Ashoka.’ I didn’t get the film but I got her. I got married at the age of 30 after dating her for 11 years. The first girl I dated was when the girl was in Class IX and I was in Class VIII. I really cared for her, but I was not earning so could not support her. I again had a brief romance with a second girl. This was also the time Ayesha and I knew each other. I told Ayesha, ‘Look, I am in love with a girl in America who has gone there to earn money to support me.’ I was shocked when Ayesha said, ‘I will write to her that we will both get married to you and live together.’ Tu uska dil dekh. I call her ‘Bhole’. Aisa kaun karega? What she is and what I am. I like her simplicity, her honesty and her straightforwardness, her zest and zeal for life, to look lovely for me, for her children all the time, caring about every detail for her kids. She is like a little tigress looking after her kids all the time. She is absolutely all giving. She will burn her house to give warmth to the neighbour’s house. She is even more giving than I am. I became an actor when I was 23 and lived at Teen Batti till when I was 30. It was Ayesha who sold my flat and got me a flat. She was a model and was from a wealthy family staying in a 4,200 sq ft house in South Mumbai. I think she likes my looks and my dishonesty. She always cared for me and believed in me. She knows me and can scan me and knows everything about me. She is forgiving. I always felt kind towards her since she wrote that letter to my girlfriend. I had decided that day ki kuch bhi kar le woh, sab gunaah maaf. Sitting at home, looking after the kids, with me hanging out on the set with such beautiful girls all the time aur ek uff tak nahi. Our friendship is deep-rooted. I don’t talk much. She will talk about Tiger and I will listen. Every time he came with a cup at home, I knew it was not me teaching him. Every time he got good grades, it was not me who had taught him. The first time he was on stage, I knew I had not trained him. I feel proud that he wants to do things on his own and doesn’t want my help.

How did you become an actor?
I was working in a travel agency and was standing on a bus stop when this person from a modelling agency asked me, ‘Why don’t you become a model?’ He said, ‘Photo lega, paisa dega.’ During my lunch break, I met him and gave my measurements and became a model. I got a call from Asha Chandraji, who said, ‘Why don’t you become an actor?’ My dad, post school, had predicted that I would become an actor and I started taking acting classes. He would tell me, ‘You will be in mass media. Two steps forward, one step backward.’ He would say, ‘My friend, no friend.’ And I would tell him, ‘Papa, friends are everything to me.’ But he would say, ‘Self-help is the best help.’ But he was so lenient towards me. He never touched me. I used to party and come home late. All the bartenders in the area were my friends so they used to bill my drinks to all the sons of the rich kids. Then I used to go and swim in the morning at my friend’s place, come home and pass out. Wake up at 12.30, go back to the pool and do underwater swimming the whole day. I had rich friends at Malabar hill. One of my friends from my school Kishore Chandramani was a rich kid and through him I came to know all the rich Gujarati and Sindhi kids in the area who all became my friends and my fan as I was this cool dude who was born stylish. I met Suneil Anand (Dev Anand’s son) in my acting class and requested him to make me meet Dev Anand as my mother was his big fan. I met Dev Anand and he said, ‘Subah subah tumhari tasveer dekhi and sham ko tum samne khade ho. Tumhe ek role doonga. Parallel role hai, main hero hoon, tum second hero.’ I thought to myself, wow hero and I debuted in Swami Dada. He was unbelievable. He was a baap and was a true legend.

Do you have friends in the industry?
All my friends be it Danny (Denzongpa), Dimple (Kapadia) or Dingy (Amrita Singh) are beautiful people, who are clean at heart, but a bit rough. I have my mother’s heart and father's face. I am all giving like my mother and practical like my father. I am reckless and a wanderer and feel that I need to give more time to my family.
