Sunny Deol completes shooting the climax of Soorya three years after the film went on floors

Sunny Deol completes shooting the climax of Soorya three years after the film went on floors

Upala KBR (MID-DAY; September 1, 2025)

Inarguably, Sunny Deol has a promising line-up of films with Lahore 1947, Border 2, and Ramayana. Amid this, the senior actor, however, hasn’t forgotten his prior commitment. Deol, who had shot a chunk of Soorya in 2022, returned to the world of M Padmakumar’s thriller in August as they began filming the climax. He aims to wrap up the movie by mid-September.

An official adaptation of the Malayalam film Joseph (2018), Soorya — which had gone on floors in Jaipur in the summer of 2022 — sees Deol as a retired cop, who unexpectedly gets pulled into a murder investigation that leads him to discover an organ harvesting racket. Talking to mid-day, producer Deepak Mukut said that they are currently filming the climactic action sequences with Deol, Ravi Kishan, and Manish Wadhwa in Vile Parle.

“We are shooting a massive action scene on a set, reflecting a hospital, constructed at the Golden Tobacco Factory. Action director Ravi Varma is executing it along with a unit of over 350 people. It’s a hand-to-hand combat scene featuring Sunny,” he shared.

From September 1, the unit will shift their focus to a critical courtroom sequence. Mukut added, “In the film, Sunny has to fight a case. So, he is back to his Damini [1993] avatar, doing lots of action and mouthing dramatic dialogues as he seeks justice. This leg will be filmed on a set, in Naigaon perhaps.”

Soon after, the unit will fly out to Jaipur for the final 10-day schedule. “After that, we will begin post-production. We may release a teaser and trailer this year as we plan to release Soorya in early 2026.”

A three-year wait to wrap up the project can be discouraging, but Mukut noted that he found a supportive collaborator in the leading man. Even as Deol was busy with Jaat, Lahore 1947, and Border 2, he was involved in the movie’s creative process. The producer added, “It’s all about being patient. I had other commitments too, including The Bhootnii.”

First six months of 2025 a mixed bag for the box office

HALF-YEARLY REPORT
CARD: THODA MAGIC,
THODA TRAGIC

The first six months of 2025 have been a mixed bag for the box office, with small films working, and heavyweight projects tanking
Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; July 1, 2025)

The first six months of 2025 have been a roller-coaster ride for India, with the Pahalgam terror attack and India’s brave response in the form of Operation Sindoor being everyone’s focus. However, the film business remained unaffected. According to an Ormax report, the cumulative total for 2025’s releases, till May, stood at Rs. 4,812 crore, 27% higher than the same period in 2024.

JANUARY
Actor Sonu Sood’s Fateh (Rs. 12.85 crore), Rasha Thadani and Aaman Devgan-starrer Azaad (Rs. 6.32 crore), actor Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency (Rs. 16.52 crore) and actor Shahid Kapoor’s Deva couldn’t set the cash registers ringing. Sky Force featuring Akshay Kumar did manage to break even.

FEBRUARY
Vicky Kaushal-starrer Chhaava became this year’s highest grosser so far. Made on a budget of Rs. 130 crore, the period drama earned Rs. 600 crore. Actors Junaid Khan and Khushi Kapoor’s Loveyapa only collected Rs. 7 crore, against a budget of Rs. 60 crore.

MARCH-APRIL
While Sunny Deol’s Jaat (Rs. 89.50 crore) and Akshay Kumar’s Kesari Chapter 2 did well, Salman Khan’s Sikandar, made on a budget of Rs. 200 crore, failed.

MAY
Ajay Devgn-starrer Raid 2 did well with Rs. 173.28 crore. Also, Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi’s Bhool Chuk Maaf had a decent run with Rs. 74.18 crore.

JUNE
June had two clean hits so far — Housefull 5 and actor Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par, which has been running successfully. Actor Kajol’s horror-mythological drama Maa got a slow start.

“Barring Chhaava, we have not had a true blockbuster. Raid 2 and Jaat did well. I hope the second half is better. I feel the smaller and medium-budget films need to do well in theatres, as we don’t have a big release every week. Bhool Chuk Maaf did well in the two-week window it had between theatrical and digital release.”
- Taran Adarsh, Trade analyst

“2025 has not been so good. Sikandar not working was a shock. Kesari Chapter 2 and Housefull 5 worked. Before the pandemic, such films would run, not just work. We are still struggling, businesswise.”
- Atul Mohan, Trade analyst

“The first half of 2025 saw strong theatrical momentum, led by Chhaava, Raid 2, Bhool Chuk Maaf, Kesari Chapter 2, Sitaare Zameen Par and Jaat. Hollywood also contributed with Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning becoming the first Hollywood release to cross ₹100 crore in 2025 and a solid performance by Final Destination Bloodlines and How to Train Your Dragon. Regional cinema, including Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam films, contributed ₹3,600 crore to the box office.”
- Devang Sampat, Managing Director, Cinepolis India

BIG HITS
Chhaava - Rs. 600.10 crore
Raid 2 - Rs. 178.08 crore
Sky Force - Rs. 131.44 crore
Housefull 5 - Rs. 156.40 crore
Kesari Chapter 2 - Rs. 93.28 crore
Sitaare Zameen Par - Rs. 107.68 crore

BIG MISSES
Sikandar - Rs. 103.45 crore
Deva - Rs. 32.07 crore
Loveyapa - 7.04 crore

From Raid 2 to Jaat: Pirates strike films just before the premiere

Ajay Devgn's Raid 2 team to assemble a year after shoot wrap to film two songs

Theatres, streaming industry lost Rs. 13,700 cr and Rs. 8,700 crore, respectively, in 2023 due to piracy: Report
Rajesh N Naidu & Rashmi Rajput (THE ECONOMIC TIMES; May 20, 2025)

Marquee Hindi films such as Sikandar, Jaat, Raid 2 and The Bhootnii were leaked online, kneecapping their run at the box office at birth.

These films were released on pirated and illegal web sites and applications on Thursday, a day before their formal release, bucking a pirating practice of releasing new films a day after their run at cinemas.

"There is a growing trend of movies, especially Hindi and Tamil films, being leaked on the day before the release. In such cases, the role of an insider is suspected," said a senior Maharashtra police officer.

"Piracy before the day of release of a film implies that it is an insider job. There are three channels through which a film can get leaked. They are post-production studios, content delivery agencies and nefarious elements in exhibition companies," said Girish Wankhede, a movie trade analyst.

A recent EY study with the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) showed that 51% of media consumers access content from pirated sources. There are four key sources of piracy: illegal streaming platforms, mobile applications, spreading of pirated links on social media, and torrents.

The report noted that instant messaging platform Telegram is a widely preferred platform for consumers of pirated content and pirates alike as it allows transfer of files up to 2 GB. According to the report, in 2023, theatres and the streaming industry lost Rs 13,700 crore and Rs 8,700 crore respectively due to piracy.

Producers said the new trend of piracy before release is largely connected with how strong the buzz or interest that a film has generated before its release.

“A pre-release leak is not just piracy—it is economic sabotage. It destroys a film’s theatrical potential, jeopardizes digital (streaming) and satellite deals, and kills audience curiosity before the first show,” said Suniel Wadhwa, co-founder & director, Karmic Films. "The buzz or interest around a film is a key factor whether a film's print gets leaked before or after its release," Wadhwa added.

Industry veterans said it was critical to follow a multi-layered approach which covers legality, technology and systemic aspects associated with piracy. They suggest that the increasing use of AI and collaboration with technology companies such as BLOCK X Technologies, which spot sites and other sources of pirated content, must be the norm in the industry to reduce piracy in the industry.

"To avoid piracy, with help of right stakeholders, we are working on a technology which will break a movie into three parts and these three parts can only be joined with a password," said Wankhede.

One of the repercussions of rampant piracy is it impacts the earnings' prospects of mid-and-small budget films more than big-budget ones because even after piracy, streamers buy big-budget films.

I am no longer the island that I used to be-Randeep Hooda

Lin Laishram shares her memories with Randeep Hooda on his birthday, calls him 'most talented actor in the industry'

Onkar Kulkarni (BOMBAY TIMES; May 13, 2025)

Known for his intense screen presence and versatile performances, Randeep Hooda reveals that personally, there’s been a transformation in him after his marriage to actress Lin Laishram in November 2023. The actor believes that his marriage has played a pivotal role in bringing about a change in the way he engages with the world.

‘Today, I’m more willing to put myself out there’
Reflecting on how there’s been a mindset shift post marriage, Randeep shared, “I’m no longer the island (isolated person) I used to be. I can still be that island, but now there’s always a bridge back to the mainland through Lin. I’ve become calmer, more open to new experiences and more sociable. Today, I’m more willing to put myself out there and be presentable. There have been great changes in my life, and I’m incredibly grateful to her. She’s a spiritual person, and her calming influence has brought a lot of peace into my life. She’s introduced me to a positive routine with fewer late nights, and it’s definitely been beneficial,” said Randeep, who was recently seen playing the antagonist in Jaat, starring Sunny Deol.

‘After directing a film myself, I have a newfound respect for my directors’
Randeep, who helmed Swatantrya Veer Savarkar last year, plans to take his role as a director ahead. He explained, “I’m excited about directing more films in the future. Right now, I’m writing two projects — one is an international film, and the other is a high-octane action movie.”

Though acting remains his first love, Randeep admits he missed the responsibility and power that comes with being a director when he was on the set of Jaat.

“As an actor, there’s often a lot of downtime, and that was a challenge for me when I shot for a film after Savarkar. I found myself restless in my vanity van with nothing to do. But it’s also a relief that someone else is handling all the problems and challenges that come with filmmaking. After directing, I have a newfound respect for my directors. I’ve always respected them, but stepping into their shoes gave me a deeper understanding of the endless list of issues they have to manage,” said the Highway actor.

WILL RAID 2 MANAGE TO CROSS THE RS. 100 CRORE MARK?

Last week wasn’t great as expected, in terms of box office. Ground Zero will not reach Rs. 10 crores while Phule will barely cross the Rs. 1 crore mark. However, Kesari Chapter 2 continued to be rock steady while Jaat also did well. And now all eyes are on the big release of the coming week, Raid 2.

As the name suggests, it is a sequel to Raid. This time, the protagonist, played by Ajay Devgn, will face Riteish Deshmukh. Vaani Kapoor is the female lead and she replaces Ileana DCruz. The trailer has been well-received and there’s a perception that here’s a film which will be something to watch out for. The song ‘Nasha’ featuring Tamannaah Bhatia has grabbed eyeballs and further added to the buzz.

The earlier part opened at Rs. 9.45 crores and ended up collecting Rs. 98.02 crores in its lifetime. Raid 2 releases on a Thursday to take advantage of the holidays in Maharashtra and Gujarat and a partial holiday in the rest of the country due to International Labour Day. The advance is decent and it can have an opening of Rs. 10 crores. If all goes well, it can even cross the Rs. 15 crore mark, but this will depend on the jump the film takes from noon onwards. The collections will dip as Friday is a normal working day. But the footfalls will see another jump on Saturday and Sunday. At this rate, the film will cross the Rs. 50 crore mark in its four-day weekend. Once that happens, entering the Rs. 100 crore mark shouldn’t be a problem, considering the limited competition from Hindi films until June 6.

The other release of the week is The Bhootnii. It is a horror comedy starring Sanjay Dutt, Mouni Roy, Sunny Singh and Palak Tiwari. The trailer hasn’t been appreciated and even the songs haven’t worked. The film has got a limited release, as a result. It’ll have some advantage tomorrow due to the holiday and genre.

However, a film that might spring a surprise is Thunderbolts. It belongs to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and this franchise hasn’t had a great run off late. But this film has generated a lot of excitement. The advances are decent and it can have an opening of Rs. 5-6 crores or even more. The target should be to cross the first-day earnings of Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3. It earned Rs. 6.68 crores and like Thunderbolts, it was also critically acclaimed. That film managed to cross the Rs. 50 crores mark and that should also be the target of Thunderbolts.

KESARI CHAPTER 2 TRENDS WELL; JAAT SUSTAINS; WILL GROUND ZERO MAKE A MARK?

The last two major releases of Bollywood are not huge Rs. 100 crore grossers. But at the same time, they have been steady at the box office.

Kesari Chapter 2, as expected, opened at Rs. 7.50 crores. The opening was a bit below par, as it was a Good Friday holiday. Usually, the day after Saturday doesn’t see a huge jump. But Kesari Chapter 2 took a while to make noise. Hence, it jumped to Rs. 10 crores on Saturday and Rs. 11.50 crores on Sunday. On Monday, it collected Rs. 4.35 crores. With the cheap ticket offer on Tuesday, the earnings jumped to Rs. 4.85 crores.

Kesari Chapter 2 will collect around Rs. 45 crores in its first week. The target of the film will be to collect Rs. 80-90 crores in its lifetime. The cost, however, is too high. On the plus side, it is the best-performing film of Akshay Kumar in a very long time. The actor suffered a lull but he’s now all set to bounce back with a bang as his upcoming films also seem exciting.

Jaat collected Rs. 59.60 crores in Week 1 and its second-week performance is a bit below expectations. Until Tuesday, it collected Rs. 15.50 crores in the second week. It should have ideally collected Rs. 20 crores. But though Kesari Chapter 2 targets a different set of audiences, the Sunny Deol starrer was affected by the presence of a new release.

Jaat has collected Rs. 75.10 crores until Tuesday and it’ll collect Rs. 78 crores by the end of the second week. It’ll be interesting to see which film manages to earn more out of the two – Kesari Chapter 2 or Jaat.

This week’s big release is Ground Zero, starring Emraan Hashmi. It is inspired by real-life accounts of a man who eliminated the terrorist who was responsible for the 2001 Parliament Attack. The film is majorly set in Kashmir. In fact, the timing is significant as it releases three days after the shocking attack on tourists in Pahalgam.

The buzz for Ground Zero is very limited and hence, an opening of Rs. 1-2 crores is expected. If word of mouth is positive, it can see a huge jump, which will ultimately benefit the film in the long run.

The other major release of the week is Phule. It stars Pratik Gandhi as Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and Patralekhaa as Savitribai Phule. The film has been in the news after the Censor Board deleted certain words. A large section of netizens found it unjustified and it led to a lot of brouhaha.

Sadly, though this controversy has enhanced the awareness of the film, it hasn’t excited the audience to book tickets. Hence, the first-day numbers will be dismal.

Lastly, Jewel Thief - The Heist Begins will premiere on Netflix. It is sure to grab eyeballs due to its mass appeal and casting – Saif Ali Khan, Jaideep Ahlawat, Nikita Dutta and Kunal Kapoor.

No filmmaker wants to hurt people, we want to entertain-Gopichand Malineni

Jaat director Gopichand Malineni: ‘No filmmaker wants to hurt people, we want to entertain’

After a section of the Christian community calls for a ban on Jaat over a contentious scene in the trailer, director Gopichand Malineni on how he had tweaked it before the film’s release
Priyanka Sharma (MID-DAY; April 19, 2025)

It’s not every day that a sequel is announced barely a week after the film’s release. That too, when its box-office earnings haven’t met expectations. But that hasn’t deterred Sunny Deol and director Gopichand Malineni from envisioning Jaat 2, the sequel to their latest actioner Jaat. As we got on a call with the director hours after the announcement, he said that he always intended to take the story forward. “In the film, the last sequence is a lead-in for the sequel. I was confident while shooting Jaat that it will work well for us to make a second part,” he stated.

All eyes were on Jaat as it saw Deol returning to the big screen after the mammoth success of Gadar 2: The Katha Continues (2023). The actioner, also starring Saiyami Kher, hasn’t exactly taken the box office by storm, having reportedly earned Rs 62 crore so far. Did it fall short of Malineni’s expectation?

Yes, he candidly admitted. “The censor clearance got delayed. So, our advance booking window opened only a day before the release. Had it opened two-three days earlier, we would’ve got bigger opening numbers. But since then, it has only grown,” he assessed.

The April 10 offering also courted controversy. Since its release, members of the Christian community have demanded a ban on the film over a scene that shows hooligans entering a church and Randeep Hooda standing in a pose that resembles Christ’s crucifixion. At the time of our interview, Malineni said they had tweaked the setting before the film’s release.

“The censor board didn’t mention anything for the trailer cut, but later, it told us to blur the background in the film print. It was done even before people objected. If a film has to be a blockbuster, it has to be watched by as many people as possible. No filmmaker wants to hurt any people or community. We want to entertain them.”

Currently, the director is prepping for his Telugu film, which will roll in June, after which he plans to develop Jaat 2. “The sequel’s idea is already in place,” says Malineni, who has big plans for his Bollywood run. “I want to work with Salman [Khan] and Shah Rukh [Khan] sir in mass entertainers and show how I imagine them as heroes.”

Controversy, then cuts
An FIR was filed in Punjab against Sunny Deol, Randeep Hooda, director Gopichand Malineni and producer Naveen Yerneni over a scene that depicts Hooda standing in a church in a pose that resembles Christ’s crucifixion, and shows violence in the holy setting. On Friday evening, the makers announced that the sequence was deleted.

They issued a statement that read, “There has been a backlash for a specific scene in the film. The scene has been removed with immediate effect. Our intention was not to hurt any religious sentiments. We deeply regret it and have taken a quick action of deleting the scene from the film. We sincerely apologize to everyone whose beliefs have been hurt.”

JAAT BRINGS RESPITE TO CINEMAS; WILL KESARI CHAPTER 2 MANAGE TO SUCCEED?

Last week’s release Jaat is doing very well at the box office. There were apprehensions about releasing the film on a Thursday. Thankfully, it opened beyond expectations, collecting Rs. 9 crores. It had a healthy jump on Sunday when it earned Rs. 14 crores. The four-day weekend total was Rs. 39 crores. On Monday, it had the advantage of a partial holiday (Ambedkar Jayanti) while on Tuesday, most cinemas sold tickets at cheaper rates as per the new offer by PVR Inox.

While Jaat collected Rs. 7.25 crores on Monday, it earned Rs. 5.50 crores on Tuesday. Wednesday was the first normal non-holiday weekday for Jaat when it held strongly, collecting Rs. 3.85 crores. The first week collections of Jaat are expected to be Rs. 59 crores. If it manages to hold well for the next two weeks, it has the chance to cross the Rs. 100 crore mark. It faces competition from Kesari Chapter 2 from tomorrow, April 18, but that film is meant for a different audience.

Kesari Chapter 2 stars Akshay Kumar, R Madhavan and Ananya Panday and is based on the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre’s aftermath. While many films have been made on the tragic event, this film throws light on the courtroom drama that followed. The trailer is hard-hitting and all three actors seem in top form. In a unique initiative, fan screenings were held in different cities on April 16 and the terrific word of mouth has enhanced the hype to some extent.

Sadly, the film faces several challenges. It is given an ‘A’ rating, which will restrict its audience. Secondly, there’s no song and it looks like a serious drama. Thirdly, Akshay Kumar’s box office standing sadly is not the same as it was before the pandemic. 6 years ago, a film like this would have opened in the range of Rs. 13-14 crores.

As of now, it seems like Kesari Chapter 2 would have an opening of Rs. 7-8 crores. A weekend of Rs. 30 crores would be very healthy and this will be possible with encouraging word of mouth followed by huge interest among people to see the film.

Urvashi Rautela takes a dig at Tamannaah Bhatia over Raid 2 song

Urvashi throws shade at tammy?

HINDUSTAN TIMES (April 16, 2025)

Actor Tamannaah Bhatia’s song Nasha from the upcoming film Raid 2 has been trending. While many have been appreciating her moves, some social media users drew a comparison between the song and actor Urvashi Rautela’s dance number Sorry Bol in Sunny Deol and Randeep Hooda-starrer Jaat. The chatter took a turn when Urvashi herself addressed the comparisons.

On Monday, Urvashi shared a screenshot of a comment in which a fan called her song “far better than Nasha”. The 31-year-old later deleted her Story, but a screenshot found its way on Reddit. Social media users were not impressed with her post, with several criticizing her for sharing it.

The actor was earlier trolled for naming actor Kiara Advani after her Game Changer bombed at the box office. While promoting her film, Urvashi had told Lehren TV, “Agar Kiara Advani ki Game Changer disaster hui hai aur meri Daaku Maharaaj blockbuster hit ho gayi hai, then it’s not my mistake.”
------------------------------------------------------------
Meanwhile, in an interview with Screen, influencer Orry spoke about feeling insecure after Urvashi overshadowed him with a grand entrance at her 31st birthday party in February, adding that he later took “revenge”.

The 29-year-old recalled that the actor walked in carrying her own spotlight: “It didn’t matter who you were—you could be Donald Trump, and you’d still take out your phone and record Urvashi’s entrance.”

He had also shared a video wishing her back in Feb, in which he can be seen pushing her while dancing to Dabidi Dibidi (Daaku Maharaaj): “We were dancing near the DJ booth to her song, and as everyone was recording, I pushed her — on her own song, no less. That was me getting revenge for the light. She even tried to blind me once! I posted the video myself and said, ‘Urvashi, you’re taking too much attention. This is not okay. I’m feeling very insecure — and your physical spotlight is outshining my inner glow’.”

South cinema cinema poore Bharat mein chal raha hai because everybody can relate to it-Sunny Deol

Compiled by Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; April 13, 2025)

Actors Sunny Deol, Randeep Hooda and Viineet Kumar Singh - the star cast of Jaat were in town recently to meet the winners of the HT City Stars In The City contest. In conversation with Chief Managing Editor, Entertainment & Lifestyle Sonal Kalra, they were up to answer every question that came their way. From an overload of action films, to nepotism, they took it all. Randeep also went on to share some BTS stories from his wedding in 2023 to Lin Laishram, and everyone was left surprised.

Oh, and that was not it. How can you have such macho stars in the house, and not have a panja battle!

There’s so much action in Jaat. Does it come naturally to you at this point? Or do you roll your eyes when an action script is narrated to you?
Sunny: Scripts pasand aati hain, tabhi karta hoon films. In the kind of films I’ve done, [my] character is an underdog who comes up and wins and overcomes the situation. Chaalis saal se tag aisa lag gaya hai ki main [action] se nikal nahin paa raha hoon. But Jaat is a very entertaining film.

Who’s the real ’jaat’ in the film?
Randeep: I am a real-life Jaat, playing a Sri Lankan in the film, and that’s a joke on me (laughs). But it’s good for the movie. Kya yeh community ke baare mein hai? Kisi individual ke baare mein, ya yeh koi agent hai? Film dekh ke pata chal jaayega. The only true Jaat in the film, however, is Sunny Deol. Humare Haryana mein bolte hain, ‘Jaat ki full form hai, Justice, Action and Truth!’”

Viineet, what was it like working with two powerhouses like Sunny and Randeep?
Viineet: I got a lot of love from these two secure actors. Bade ped ke neeche chhota ped khil nahin paata. But agar ped aisa ho, toh ped dam dama ke khilta hai!

There’s a lot of talk about north vs south cinema. Having worked with Telugu director Gopichand Malineni on his first Hindi film, what’s your take?
Randeep: Filmmakers in the south make slick films. As far as North-South goes, language is the last form of communication in any human interaction.
Sunny: Unka cinema poore Bharat mein chal raha hai because everybody can relate to it.

Do you have any real-life memories that felt like a filmi, dramatic moment?
Randeep: My wedding took place in Manipur under heavy Army protection. There were more security personnel than civilians; as soon as the pheras finished, AK-47s went off in the air across the entire valley. Shaadi ho toh aisi ho!

Sunny, as your sons Karan and Rajveer set out in their careers, how will you support them while letting them carve their own paths?
Sunny: As a father, I will always support them, like my dad (actor Dharmendra) did. Karan is on his own journey; let’s see where he goes. Baaki, when you become a father, you realize that you will always have that ‘dhak dhak’ in your heart.

(Crisp) Movie Review: JAAT by FENIL SETA

In terms of story, Jaat is like old wine in a new bottle. The songs are poor, the violence is too disturbing, at times needlessly, and moreover, the film drops after the interval. But there are certain plot points which are different and add to the fun. The first half doesn't just have action but lots of amusing scenes as well, which would be loved. A scene in the middle of the second half will create a frenzy in cinemas and even the climax has its share of clapworthy scenes. Most importantly, writer-director Gopichand Malineni portrays Sunny Deol in a true-blue mass avatar. This is how an action film hero should be revered and celebrated. And this film also comes at the right time, just after Gadar 2. Hence, Sunny's revived stardom will be continued with this film. Randeep Hooda is menacing like never before. Regena Cassandrra is the surprise of the film. She makes her presence felt through her mere expressions. The same goes for Swaroopa Ghosh (Ranatunga's mother). Viineet Kumar Siingh, as expected, rocks the show. Saiyami Kher leaves a huge mark in a small role. After Animal, Upendra Limaye once again wins hearts with a cameo appearance. Ramya Krishnan (President), Zarina Wahab, Makarand Deshpande, Jagapathi Babu (CBI officer Satyamurthy) and others also do well. All in all, Jaat is a paisa-vasool entertainer and a must watch for Sunny Deol fans and masala film lovers.

My rating - *** ½ out of 5!

WILL JAAT CROSS THE RS. 100 CRORE MARK?

Sunny Deol’s stardom was getting eroded but it got a boost with the monstrous blockbuster success of Gadar 2. It collected Rs. 515.13 crores and was an all-time grosser for some time until Jawan took over the spot. Yet, what Sunny achieved with the film was a huge feat and hence, his upcoming films now are highly awaited. Jaat is his immediate next after Gadar 2 and hence, the hype is there.

Moreover, Jaat is also an action entertainer and features Sunny Deol in a massy role. His fans love him in this zone and this film delivers the same, that too in abundance, as evident by the trailer. It also stars Randeep Hooda, Viineet Kumar Siingh, Regina Cassandra and Saiyami Kher. It is directed by Gopichand Malineni, a popular Telugu filmmaker. The first look teaser was unveiled during Pushpa 2 and it caught attention. The trailer was launched a few weeks ago and it added to the film’s excitement.

However, the songs have failed. Even the item song featuring Urvashi Rautela didn’t entice the audience. Moreover, the film releases on a Thursday, April 10, possibly on account of Mahavir Jayanti. But it's not a big holiday and most officers will be operational. This will impact its first-day earnings.

Jaat will open in the range of Rs. 7-8 crores. If all goes well, it can open at Rs. 9 crores or even higher. If the film had been released on Friday, it would have surely opened in double digits. Nevertheless, Jaat can score if the reports are positive, leading to healthy collections over the weekend. If it manages to cross the Rs. 100 crore mark, then it’ll be a nice achievement.

Meanwhile, Sikandar crashed big time. While it collected Rs. 8.50 crores last Wednesday, it dropped to Rs. 4.75 crores on Thursday. It further dropped to Rs. 2.75 crores on Friday, shocking the trade and industry. Believe it or not, it still hasn't crossed the Rs. 100 crore mark. The collections until Tuesday, April 8, are Rs. 96.80 crores.

Between Monday and Wednesday, Sikandar's collections are in the range of Rs. 1 crore. Once Jaat releases, it’ll start collecting in lakhs on a daily basis. It’ll finally go past the Rs. 100 crore mark in the coming weekend.

Many Hindi films have opted against a theatrical release in the next two-three months

SUMMER SOONA
SOONA LAAGE,
FT. THEATRES

Many Hindi films have opted against a theatrical release in the next two-three months, we find out why

Amid a flurry of OTT releases, a film releasing in theatres is a big deal in itself these days. It is almost a gamble, given how picky audiences are about a theatrical watch. One look at the 2025 calendar of releases, and you will realize that the next three months seem to be a rough patch for the industry. Among others, the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) is said to be one of the reasons for the lean patch.

Looking at April alone, many releases have been shifted. The Akshay Kumar and Arshad Warsi-starrer Jolly LLB 3 will now hit the screens in August. Filmmaker Karan Johar’s Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, starring Varun Dhawan, Janhvi Kapoor and Sanya Malhotra, will now hit the screens on September 12 instead of April 18. A source tells us that while the shoot started later than intended, businessman Adar Poonawalla buying 50% stake in KJo’s Dharma Productions also added to the delay.

Metro... In Dino was originally set to come out on November 29 last year, but it got pushed to July 4. Sharing why the film wasn’t slated for a summer release, a source close to the project informs us: “We wanted a desired window looking at the other releases. So, we settled on July 4.”

Of course, the trade is not happy with the lean patch. Expert Atul Mohan says, “Every month sees one or two big releases, but small filmmakers don’t prefer to release their films in theatres when the IPL is on. So, they push their dates by a month or two.”

Ananth Narayan Mahadevan, director of Phule, isn’t perturbed by the IPL or other films releasing alongside: “April 10 is the 197th birth anniversary of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule. So, how can we miss out on that date? There won’t be any point otherwise.”

Films set to hit the screens this summer
April currently has four theatrical releases that are likely to hit the screens as scheduled — Jaat and Bhool Chuk Maaf on April 10, Phule on April 11 and The Bhootnii on April 18. May has two releases — Raid 2 and Kesari Veer.

June will see three films in theatres — Housefull 5, Maalik and Maa.

After losing 30 kgs for Swatantrya Veer Savarkar, Randeep Hooda transforms yet again; gains 8 kgs for Jaat

Jaat: Randeep Hooda gains 8 kilos to transform into Ranatunga, an intimidating villain

Playing a brute gangster in Jaat, actor Randeep Hooda gains eight kilos to attain a bulky look; trains with a dialect coach to perfect the Haryanvi accent

Give Randeep Hooda a powerful role, and he will mould himself physically to become the character. From achieving the emaciated look for Sarbjit (2016) to losing over 30 kilos for his last offering Swatantrya Veer Savarkar (2024), the actor is no stranger to physical transformation. He has gone down the road again for Jaat, where he plays a ruthless gangster Ranatunga pitted against leading man Sunny Deol.

The actor’s look was recently unveiled in a teaser. For the Gopichand Malineni-directed actioner, Hooda had to bulk up, gaining eight kilos and adding muscle mass. Sources tell us that the actor trained for 11 months before he reported to the shoot last September.

A source reveals, “Randeep’s daily regimen consisted of intense weight-lifting, functional fitness drills, and combat-style workouts designed to enhance agility and power. Along with his trainer Durgesh Gudilu, he focused on compound movements like deadlifts, squats, and bench presses, ensuring his frame carried the imposing presence required for the character. Alongside strength training, he incorporated boxing and MMA-inspired drills, to lend aggression to his movements that would reflect in the action sequences.”

With Malineni designing Jaat as a full-blown actioner, he envisioned Hooda’s Ranatunga as a rugged and brute gangster hailing from Haryana, who could hold his own against Deol. With that brief, the actor-director duo, along with the styling team, arrived at his avatar—a bulky physique, grimy appearance, unkempt hair, and aggressive body language.

The source breaks it down further, saying, “From day one, Randeep was committed to making Ranatunga an intimidating villain. The unkempt hair complements his hardened visage. He also worked extensively on his body language. His gait and posture were meticulously crafted to make his character appear terrifying. For 12 weeks, the actor also worked with a dialect coach to perfect the Haryanvi twang.”

The upcoming movie also stars Regina Cassandra and Saiyami Kher.

I can’t play a Punjabi girl, but a Punjabi girl can play a South Indian-Regena Cassandrra

I can’t play a Punjabi girl, but a Punjabi girl can play a South Indian: Regena on unfair casting practices

Abhimanyu Mathur (HINDUSTAN TIMES; February 15, 2025)

While she started with Tamil cinema, actor Regena Cassandrra has done substantial work in Hindi, too, ranging from the web series, Rocket Boys, to the film, Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga (2019).

However, the 34-year-old, who will next be seen in Jaat alongside Sunny Deol, says that “being a South Indian in this industry isn’t easy”. She tells us,“I started working at the age of nine. Over the last 25-odd years, I’ve done ads, short films, and movies and have a certain sense of understanding of what goes on.”

Elaborating, she says, “When I audition for any project in Hindi, they look at my language skills. Can this girl talk in Hindi? How does she sound when she talks? It is imperative. They let a bit of the accent stay only if I’m playing a South Indian. But when it comes to the South industry, there are so many North Indian girls who have become big names in Tamil and Telugu films. We don’t care whether they can talk in Tamil or not.”

And hence, she has lost out on roles in both industries: “I’ve missed out on so many roles because my Hindi was not up to the mark. Like, I can’t play a Punjabi girl, and that’s ok. But, a Punjabi girl can play a South Indian girl. It has happened to me. Someone else was chosen over me for a project in the South, and same person was chosen over me in the North as well. Where do I go?”

Saiyami Kher, Ayesha Khan & 7 other actresses join hands with Sunny Deol for Jaat

Eight action heroines join Sunny Deol’s Jaat; Saiyami Kher, Regena Cassandra and others to perform stunts and stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the leading man

We are used to seeing Sunny Deol as a one-man army in most of his actioners, from Ghayal (1990) to Gadar 2: The Katha Continues (2023). But it looks like his upcoming film, Jaat, will be an exception. While Gopichand Malineni’s directorial venture sees the actor as a common man rising against the system, it has been learnt that as many as eight female actors will join him in his fight against the baddies. Veteran actor Zarina Wahab has an emotionally powerful role, while Saiyami Kher, Regena Cassandrra, Bandhavi Sridhar, Moumita Pal, Vishika Kota, Praneeta Patnaik, Doulath Sulthana and Ayesha Khan will be seen in action avatars, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the leading man.

From what we’ve heard, it was Malineni’s idea to depict them as action heroines alongside Deol. A source says, “When Gopichand decided to make Jaat as an action extravaganza, he was certain that the women would be depicted as brave fighters and an equal to the hero. Regena and Saiyami have several high-octane fight sequences in the movie. Telugu film actors Bandhavi and Doulath, who were seen in Masooda [2022] and Madham [2020] respectively, play upright cops in the multilingual movie. Moumita, Vishika, Praneeta and Ayesha, who were recently seen in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 [2024], Ashtadigbandhanam [2023], Sita Ramam [2022] and Gangs Of Godavari [2024] respectively, complete the cop brigade. These actors will be seen in fierce avatars, performing hand-to-hand-combat, using guns, and taking on baddies in the action sequences.”

The unit began shooting Jaat in Hyderabad in June 2024. While Deol is currently filming Border 2, having finished most of his Jaat portions, the director is currently shooting with the leading ladies. “Sets have been put up in Ramoji Film City, while the outdoor scenes are being canned in Aziz Nagar and Krishna Nagar in Hyderabad. Currently, Praneeta is filming her portions. Sunny is expected to join the unit next month for a patch shoot,” adds the source.

The April 10 offering—that will be released in Hindi, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, and Tamil—also stars Randeep Hooda and Vineet Kumar Singh.

Jaat makers rope in four action directors to make film Sunny Deol's biggest action drama

When Telugu director Gopichand Malineni had announced his next with Sunny Deol, he had promised that it would be an action extravaganza (Deol rises again as a one-man army, June 24). Seven months and four schedules later, it looks like he has stayed true to his word. In his bid to make Jaat one of Deol’s biggest action films, the director has roped in four stunt directors, each of whom has designed an elaborate action block.

Sources tell us that Anal Arasu, Ram-Lakshman, Naga Venkat Naga, and Peter Hein of Kalki 2898 AD (2024) fame lead the action team. A source says, “The sets have been designed by Avinash Kolla. The first set-piece involved a car chase sequence choreographed by Peter Hein. Another action block involves hand-to-hand combat that takes place inside a police station and ends with Sunny using a huge fan as a weapon. It was choreographed by Naga Venkat. Both the set-pieces were shot in Hyderabad last year. Another fight sequence aboard a ship was designed by Ram-Lakshman, and filmed at the Panambur port in Mangalore last month. Sunny also shot an ambitious action piece set in Agumbe forest in Mangalore last November. It will be one of the major highlights of the film.”

Jaat, also starring Saiyami Kher and Regina Cassandra, is almost complete, save for one week’s shoot. Next week, Deol will kick off the last leg of the film in Mangalore. The source adds, “Only a few days’ work remains on Jaat. The major action blocks are complete.”

If Deol’s protagonist who rises against the corrupt system is being shown as a mighty hero, the antagonists need to be powerful too. Keeping that in mind, Malineni has apparently roped in six actors as villains.

“Sunny will face five villains, played by Randeep Hooda, Vineet Kumar Singh, Ajay Ghosh, Dayanand Shetty, Jagpathi Babu and Babloo Prithiveeraj. The director wants to make it bigger than Gadar 2: The Katha Continues [2023] in terms of action,” says the insider. Jaat will be released in Hindi, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada and Tamil.
