Sidharth Malhotra who has started shooting for Brothers an adpatation of the hit film Warrior talks about how he bulked up for his role and trained in mixed martial arts
Chaya Unnikrishnan (DNA; October 25, 2014)
With Ek Villain doing a business of Rs 100 crore,
Sidharth Malhotra is in on a career high. Not only has he become
one-of-the-most sought after actors, his stakes have increased in the ad
market too. Just three-films-old, this Student Of The Year actor has
managed to spring suprises with every performance. If Hasee Toh Phasee
had him playing a romantic guy, Ek Villain had him essaying a good boy
turned bad and his next, Brothers will see him as a boxer. Here,
Sidharth talks about evolving as an actor, his transformation and
more...
Has Ek Villain changed people’s perception of you as an actor?
I hope so. Actually, it started with Hasee Toh Phasee (HTP) more than Ek Villain. HTP was a slice-of-life film and I was not the typical mainstrean hero. That reassured people about me (as an actor). After Ek Villain I hope they stop looking for reassurance as I have done enough of films with variety.
The film had you doing a lot of action sequences. Which was the most thrilling?
There was this stunt which had Riteish (Deshmukh) and me being thrown from a five storied building, with harnesses. That was both scary and thrilling.
Tell us about the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) you have taken up to prepare for your role as a boxer in Brothers.
I had just two months to gain a particular weight and acquire a certain size. However, the kind of training you do for MMA, you tend to loose weight and my character required me to be bigger (bulked up). I was in a catch-22 situation. I am eating as much as I can and trying to get the style right. It is very strenuous though. I am still slightly under the weather. I am not just a boxer in the film, it’s a mix of martial arts.
Does this kind of a physical transformation take a toll on you?
Yes, it does. In this profession we are short of time, our days are not planned like in the US where actors get a six months gap. So, yes we do abuse our bodies, but it’s up to us to do it in a healthy manner with trainers, nutritionists and your own research. It’s also fun — what is the point in doing the same things? I have picked up a couple of sports which are new to me. It’s also a great way to stay fit. Even after the film, I would like to continue with MMA at least twice a week.
Have you seen Warrior?
Of course, it’s a cult film. Brothers is not exactly the same, it’s an adaptation. I hope we make a great MMA film for India.
How is the experience shooting with Akshay Kumar?
We haven’t shot together yet. I have begun shooting recently with Jackie Shroff. He is the nicest guy I have met, he has a great vibe. Shooting with seniors is a great experience — they have some interesting stories to tell!
There are reports about you dating Izabelle Laite..
(Cuts in) That’s my personal life, I don’t want to comment on it.
Lastly, what prompted you to associate yourself with the water park Aquamagica?
It’s a youth friendly brand and has a party vibe. A place where youngsters can go and chill. Most importantly, I have always been excited about water activities. Right from childhood I have loved swimming in salt water. I have participated in several swimming competitions in Delhi but did not pursue it professionally. So when people from Aquamagica approached me it seemed like a good idea.

When
we met Karan Johar's discovery Sidharth Malhotra last weekend, he was in
a musical
mood. The actor was tuned into the music of his upcoming film, Ekta
Kapoor's Ek Villain and spoke excitedly about watching Mithoon, Mohd
Irfan and Shraddha Kapoor's live per formance at an event this
Wednesday. Excerpts from the conversation that followed:
Ek Villain is a radical departure for you after Student Of The Year and Hasee Toh Phasee. How did you prepare for the role?
Milap Zaveri gave me the narration and the role was initially very loud with bhaigiri lingo. This was toned down. My character in the film doesn't speak too much. A lot is conveyed through expressions. We had a workshop with Mukesh Chabbra. I worked on my look. Besides stubble, I opted for tattoos. I have short hair in one look, a patch in the other. It wasn't easy to alternate between the two looks. I was very excited that Mohit Suri is directing the film. My character in the film has many shades of Emraan Hashmi's character from his film Awarapan.
Did you face Mohit's temper on the sets?
Mohit does have a temper. In fact, Shraddha (Kapoor, his co star in Ek Villain) told me that he was a lot more on the edge when making Aashiqui 2. But yeah, the crew had to bear the brunt sometimes. But he and I never had a fight. On the contrary, we bonded rather well. We both are dog lovers and have similar taste in movies.
You are doing another Dharma film, the remake of Priceless...
Tarun Mansukhani is still writing it.
Why does he take such a long time to write? A case in point is Dostana 2.
That is for Karan and Tarun to decide. Tarun wants to make sure that the script is flawless before he takes it to the floors. He has this process of showing it to friends and taking their feedback. And then he starts working on it again. If Priceless happens, it will be only happen next year. This year, I am busy with Vikramaditya Motwane's Bhavesh Joshi and Punit Malhotra's Warriors.
You replaced Imran Khan in Bhavesh Joshi. Did you speak to him before signing it?
No.
Aren't you doing Shakun Batra's next--another film where Imran was the first choice?
I am not doing that film.
Are you both good with each other?
A few days ago, we met in a gym. There is no ego thing between Imran and I.
Looking forward to work with Akshay Kumar in Dharma's Warriors?
Definitely. Unlike us, there is a sense of calmness in senior actors. Ditto for Riteish Deshmukh (his co-star in Ek Villain).
Recently, you had three back-to-back linkups...
I knew this was coming (pauses). I think, now, people are interested in me.
More recently, Aditi Rao Hydari and you bonded at an award function in Tampa and were spotted at various hangouts in NY...
Aditi and I did hang out together, but not alone. There were friends accompanying us.
What about rumours of Shraddha and you being attracted to each other?
Shraddha is a very attractive girl. We had a great time working together in Ek Villain. That's about it.
Did you have to explain the equation to her boyfriend Aditya Roy Kapoor?
I met Aditya in Tampa. There is no bad blood between us.
And what about your recent date with Brazilian model, Izabelle Leite at a Bandra nightspot?
(Fidgets) She and I share a healthy friendship that is essential to my sanity.

Two months ago, Sidharth Malhotra got cosy with Brazilian model-turned-actress Izabelle Leite on a date at a Bandra hotspot. Izabelle looked very comfortable in Sidharth's company but later tried to hide her face and make a quick exit when paparazzi arrived at the venue (Mirror, March 8).
Last week, we heard that the actor had developed a special equation with Shraddha Kapoor on the sets of Ek Villain. Sources in the film's crew reveal that Sid and Shraddha would often hung out together and partied till the wee hours.
Buzz is, their scorching kiss was okayed in one take, so convincing was their chemistry. Shraddha's boyfriend, Aditya Roy Kapoor wasn't amused with the rumours and is now spending quality time with Shraddha with a US holiday.
The latest news is that Sidharth and Aditi Rao Hydari have now got up close and personal. The two met and bonded at IIFA Awards 2014 in Florida and were spotted at various hangouts in New York.
When contacted, Aditi sounded shocked when asked about her 'friendship' with Siddharth. She said, "Who told you this?" and when we probed further, she ended the conversation with a terse, "No comments."
Siddharth remained unavailable for comment.

Has Sidharth Malhotra finally found love? On Thursday, the actor headed out on a date to a Bandra hotspot with Brazilian model Izabelle Leite, who was seen on screen in Raj Purohit’s Sixteen and Joe Rajan’s Luv U Soniyo. Izabelle looked very comfortable in Sidharth’s company and later tried to hide her face as they made a quick exit. The pictures of their date have gone viral and a friend of the model told Mirror that the two have been an item for three months now. “They have known each other for almost a year now. They have been going out for long drives and to restaurants and nightspots frequently,” said the friend. Izabelle, speaking on the speculation for the first time, chose to describe Sidharth as a “close friend”. However, she did not deny that she does spend a lot of time with the Student of the Year actor. She went on to tell Mirror that she had met Sidharth through common friends, adding, “You don’t have to work together to get friendly with someone. But right now, I am focussed on my career. I want to do more films.” Reportedly, Izabelle was dating Tanuj Virwani, Rati Agnihotri’s son, who starred opposite her in Luv U Soniyo before Tanuj moved in to a serious relationship with Akshara, Kamal Haasan’s younger daughter. The actress, who according to industry insiders is angling for a big banner film now, was earlier linked to Virat Kohli, who is now dating Anushka Sharma. Sidharth Malhotra remained unavailable for comment.
