‘Five films old’ Angela Krislinzki on Rohit Shetty, Karan Johar’s 'newbies only' show; draws flak

As reality drama receives flak for allowing Angela as contestant, those involved say it’s ‘about making it big’

While it was meant to pave the way for better roles, a supporting act in the recently released 1921 has turned out to be a thorn for Angela Krislinzki. Cinephiles heading to watch the Vikram Bhatt venture, featuring Zareen Khan and Karan Kundra, were quick to notice Krislinzki’s familiar face. The Polish model, they realised, is also a participant on the reality show, India’s Next Superstar, supposedly judging “newcomers”. It is now learnt that Krislinzki has several gigs to her credit, with her debut dating to 2008.

Portals were quick to slam the talent hunt show for promoting an existing Bollywood artiste on a platform that was supposed to give “fresh faces” an opportunity. However, casting director Mukesh Chhabra, who apparently scouted for the participants across 20 cities following auditions, finds little merit in the criticism.

Talking about the format of the show, judged by Karan Johar and Rohit Shetty, he says, “We have shortlisted people on talent showcased in auditions. Krislinzki was brought aboard after we found merit in her craft.”

Asserting that an artiste playing smaller roles has the authority to better her prospects in the industry, Chhabra adds, “The concept of the show is to launch people in lead roles, so I don’t see an issue here,” he says, his statements strongly contradicting that of Shetty, who had reportedly said that the show was indeed for “ newcomers.” “I think the channel would be in a better position to answer this,” Chhabra says dismissingly.

Krislinzki reiterated Chhabra’s claim, stating, “The show isn’t for debutantes alone. I don’t want to do small roles and will work hard to enter the big league. This is a brilliant platform, one that allows me to hone my skills.”

India's Next Superstar: Sanjay Leela Bhansali on Karan Johar's show?

Now that the release date for Padmaavat is out, director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and his actor trio — Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor — will be seen promoting the film in the next two weeks. Sources say that SLB and Ranveer Singh are slated to go on Karan Johar and Rohit Shetty’s show India’s Next Superstars. The shoot is slated for next week. Says a source, “The show is about scouting superstars among people who have no connections in the industry and Ranveer epitomises that. So, he has been invited and the makers are keen on having SLB, too, as it will be interesting to see him and KJo on the same platform.”

Karan, who was earlier rumoured to be miffed with SLB, has been praising his style and aesthetics of filmmaking, especially with regard to Padmaavat. When the first look of Deepika Padukone from the film was launched, Karan said, “She looks stunning. That’s one thing about Sanjay Leela Bhansali, his aesthetics are always beautiful and the best. His sense of visualisation, beauty is the best we have in the country.”

After Kangana Ranaut, who had differences with KJo appeared on the show, the makers are hoping for another reunion, this time between him and SLB. “Talks are on and it will be decided in two days,” adds the source.

Kangana Ranaut set for Coffee With Karan Johar on India's Next Superstar; Famous B-Town spat ends?

Almost a year after she created a storm by calling Karan Johar on his show the “snooty flag-bearer of nepotism”, even suggesting that he ran a “movie mafia”, Kangana Ranaut will reunite with the filmmaker on his upcoming talent hunt show.

The actress will appear as a guest judge on India’s Next Superstar, which on which Karan is a judge alongside filmmaker Rohit Shetty. The shoot is scheduled for Thursday at a city studio.

“I am looking forward to being on the show. It is a professional commitment for which I’m being paid. What is delightful is that Karan is okay with doing the show with me and seems to be slowly warming up to me,” Kangana told Mirror.

The planned appearance signals the end of one of Bollywood’s most famous clashes in recent memory that broke out on the sets of Koffee With Karan on February 19 last year and ensnared other stars. The spat later escalated into a battle of the sexes with Karan hinting during an event at the London School of Economics that Kangana may not have understood the meaning of the word ‘nepotism’. He said he was tired of seeing the National Award-winning actress play the woman and victim cards and that she should consider quitting Bollywood if she had a problem with how the industry functioned.

Kangana shot back that she was only playing the ‘badass’ card to fight cutthroat competition. “I am not fighting Karan Johar, I am fighting male chauvinism,” she told Mirror on March 9 last year. She added the film industry was not a small studio given to Karan by his father but belonged to every Indian and was highly recommended for outsiders like her.

On Tuesday, Kangana said Karan’s new talent show, too, was a platform for outsiders. She cited its tagline: ‘Na khandaan, na sifarish... Bollywood ko hai sirf talent ka intezaar’.

“I am the epitome of the tagline being a self-made woman and actress myself, which is precisely why the channel wants me,” she said, quick to add that you can have a creative collaboration even with different sets of ideologies. “I have not gone back on my ideology. I stick to what I believe in.”

Kangana and Karan’s war of words made ‘nepotism’ one of the most discussed topics of 2017, even cropping up in an AIB video featuring the actress. But if the subject came up for discussion on the new talent show, will Kangana speak her mind in the style that has won her many fans?

“I have already written an open letter on it, but I am open to discussing any subject. Nepotism is a great subject to be discussed,” she said.

Last year, Karan and Kangana had steered clear of each other at several public events. But during a recent media interaction, Karan said if the channel invited her, he and his team would be happy to have her. “Our heart is big, our house is open to all. We will happily, lovingly and respectfully welcome her on the show,” he said.

Reacting to the statement, Kangana said: “I’m happy that Karan is making me feel so welcome, but I think I have been worthy of every platform I’ve been on. I’ve earned my place and deserve to be on it. Nobody has to open any doors for me I am capable of opening all the doors myself.”

Kangana Ranaut will be a celebrity guest on India’s Next Superstars hosted by the dhamakedaar filmmaker jodi — Karan Johar and Rohit Shetty. The actress will shoot for the show tomorrow.

That brings us to the all-important question — have Kangana and Karan buried the hatchet? One may recall that the actress and the filmmaker-cum-television host had a war of words when Kangana, who is not one to mince words, told him that he encouraged nepotism. Post this, both of them avoided each other on public platforms. When they were unavoidably put in the same space like the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival last year, they simply avoided direct eye contact.

So, it comes as a shocker that Kangana will shoot with Karan. A source revealed that the actress agreed to share the stage with KJo because the channel had reportedly reached out to her. They have also allegedly paid her a hefty sum for the appearance.

So, she saw no reason to refuse the invitation. Our source said, “Kangana and Karan may share different ideologies but that doesn’t mean they can’t come together on a common platform.’’ The source added, “It’s great that Karan and Kangana will shoot together. But it’s a professional call, nothing more should be read into it.’’

Comparisons to cop dramas and Simmba will always be drawn-Rohit Shetty

Rohit Shetty
MID-DAY (June 8, 2018)

Ahead of the filming of his upcoming cop drama, Simmba, director Rohit Shetty says films based on police officials, like his next, will always be pitted against Dabangg (2010) and Singham (2011). The Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn starrers, he says, have made a mark at the box office, owing to which, comparisons to them will always be drawn.

Yet, his Ranveer Singh starrer will portray the protagonist with his own eccentricities. “Chulbul Pandey [from Dabangg] and Singham have become iconic characters. But this film will have its own identity. This [comparison] will always happen. If the role is serious, then people will compare it to Singham. If it’s entertaining, then [it will be pitted against] Chulbul Pandey. However, our cop [Singh] has not been created on the lines of Chulbul Pandey,” he says.

The positive response garnered by Singham was sufficient to convert it into a franchise. However, Shetty says it’s too early to know whether Simmba, scheduled to hit screens late this year, will see a similar fate. “Let’s see how the first one does.”

Presented by Reliance Entertainment, the film will be a jointly produced by Shetty and Karan Johar. “Ranveer is a unique personality. With Rohit [on board the project], he will make the character his own. There is no actor like him. He is an energy ball, the way he will explode is going to be good,” Johar said on the sidelines of India’s Next Superstar, his upcoming reality show with Shetty.

The video will be shot later.

A source associated with the show reveals that the song, “Manzil Badi Hai”, is about how it isn’t easy to become a superstar in Bollywood. The idea is to convey that only hard work can get the contestants to the top. The winners will be launched by the filmmakers.

A set resembling an amusement park is being built for the shoot. While Karan will be suit up as usual, Rohit will be more casually dressed. His brother-in-law, fashion designer Navin Shetty, has been roped in to work on his look.

Meanwhile, Mirror has learnt that Karan’s twins, Yash and Roohi, are all set to make their first public appearance at Rani Mukerji’s daughter Adira’s second birthday on December 9 at the Chopra home. The doting daddy has been planning their outfits carefully as he wants their first outing to be eye-catching.

A huge bash is being arranged with lots of kiddie treats in store. Shah Rukh Khan’s son Abram and Aamir Khan’s son Azad are also expected to attend.

Ajay Devgn and I never take our success for granted-Rohit Shetty

Natasha Coutinho (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 13, 2017)

Rohit Shetty is a relieved man. In an interview preceding his last directorial, the Diwali release Golmaal Again, the filmmaker had told Mirror (September 7), "Recent films haven't worked, so all the pressure is now on my film. I hope it works for the industry." A little over three weeks since its release, the ensemble comedy, headlined by Shetty's long-time hero and Golmaal regular Ajay Devgn, has crossed the Rs 200-crore mark at the box office, the first Hindi film to do so in a year dotted with big disappointments. Excerpts from an interview with the filmmaker:

How does it feel to break the jinx?
It is insane! When you make a film that is turning out well, you realise how much business it can do and if people will like it after a certain point. All that analysis happens with every commercial film because nobody can predict this kind of a business. Right now, Golmaal Again is among the top 10 films in Bollywood lists. The audience is returning to the theatres to watch it and I'm a happy man.

How do you plan to celebrate this success?
I've been in touch with all the team members. Ajay (Devgn) is shooting in Lucknow and Parineeti (Chopra) is in Delhi. We have been celebrating ever since the film released but once everyone is back, we will have a proper bash.

Does the success of films like Judwaa 2 and Golmaal Again bring relief to the industry?
Yes, I'm happy not just for myself but for the industry as well. Judwaa 2 has done well, now Padmavati is looking good and so is Tiger Zinda Hai. By the time we end the year, the industry should be in a better position.

What do you have to say about your hit pairing with Ajay Devgn? More films together on the cards?
Ajay and I never take our success for granted. There's never been a day when Ajay has said, "Koi farq nahi padta, dekhi jaayegi" and it's the same with me. I think that is what works for us.

Tell us about your next with Ranveer Singh?
It's a hardcore commercial action film that neither Ranveer nor I have done before. We are working on the final draft at the moment and it goes on the floors by mid next year. We have bought the rights of the South film Temper from which our film is inspired.

You will soon start shooting for the reality show, India's Next Superstar, with Karan Johar. How did that collaboration happen?
It's a new format for Karan and me. We have just shot the teaser and are yet to start shooting.

From what we know, Karan and you will be hunting for new talent on the show?
The concept is still being finalised.

Is a film with Karan on the cards as well?
We will definitely do something together. Everything is in the planning stage at the moment.

Do we see another Golmaal in the making?
We will definitely make another Golmaal. We just want the euphoria to settle down. You should not make decisions when you are extremely happy; you run the risk of going wrong. I don't know what the story will be and when it will release. I will start from scratch again, and decide after a month or so.
