With India’s Got Talent celebrating KJo’s 25-year run in industry, filmmaker attributes his success to late producer-father Yash’s blessings
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; November 3, 2023)
We’ve come to expect witty one-liners and wisecracks from Karan Johar. But in the latest season of Koffee With Karan, the filmmaker has shown a more emotional and vulnerable side to him. He continued in the same vein as he shot for the grand finale of India’s Got Talent 8 earlier this week. As part of the episode, the six finalists celebrated Johar’s 25 years in cinema, through their acts—a gesture that left him moved.
The filmmaker, who recently enjoyed a smash hit in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, reflected on his successful run in the industry, attributing it to his late producer-father Yash Johar’s goodwill.
“When my father entered the industry, he received love and respect, and made many films, but he didn’t get the success he should have received. When my first film [Kuch Kuch Hota Hai] was released, I felt that the entire industry prayed that it work for my father’s sake. It has been 19 years since he left us. Whatever I have achieved, it’s all because of his goodwill and blessings. Whenever I am going through tough times, I feel that he gives me strength.”
Calling mother Hiroo Johar “a strong presence” in his life, the filmmaker revealed that she watches India’s Got Talent for judge Kirron Kher. “Whenever I sit with my mother to watch the show, she always notices the sarees Kirron-ji wears. It drives me crazy when she demands the exact jewellery that Kirron-ji is wearing in the episode.”
I was never counted among the top 10 actors-Shilpa Shetty

Vinay MR Mishra (BOMBAY TIMES; September 3, 2023)
In 1993, actor Shilpa Shetty Kundra made her movie debut with Baazigar. It’s Shilpa’s thirtieth year in showbiz, however, as she claims her popularity has only increased over the years. Shilpa who returns to the judging panel of India's Got Talent, talks at length about thirty years in the industry and being a working mother.
‘Overworked and underpaid’
With schools reopening, Shilpa’s days start as early as seven. “Both my kids have started going to school. My days are getting pretty hectic with the kids growing up. I am trying to fit most of the things in a day,” says Shilpa who recently returned from a family holiday. For rest, it may be exciting, but not for Shilpa. “It is anything but exciting. It is a lot of work. I am overworked and underpaid,” she says. Underpaid for sure? Pat comes the reply, “Maybe not underpaid (laughs) overworked for sure.”
‘I am not someone who lives in the past’
While Shilpa is inching towards her 30 years of celebration, retrospection is something that she doesn’t believe in. “I am someone who does not go in the past. The only time I reminisce about the past is when I have to use it as a lesson in the present day. It is your past that molds you as the person that you are. I do think how I get the love that I get from people. I feel happy and proud that I have carved a niche for myself in this plethora of talent,” she shares. “Living in the moment” is a mantra that she has followed all her life.
“Life is so unpredictable; you don’t know what is in store for you. I don’t think about the past or the future. I am happy where and who I am. I am a very pragmatic person. I believe that everything happens for the best, even the worst happens for a reason.”
‘I was never in the top 10 actors’
As Shilpa looks back, the India's Got Talent judge talks about the poetic justice of life. “I feel there is poetic justice in life, always. I was never in the top 10 actors (list). I may have received a lot of love and adulation but never counted in the top 10 actors – maybe lack of opportunity, or what I don’t know. Today look at me; I am doing the biggest series, I have just finished filming a movie, I am doing a multilingual movie, I have nothing to complain about today. We all have our journey, I have carved a niche on TV, my brands are doing well,” she states.
Not my place to say anything: Shilpa on a movie on Raj Kundra
There are rumours that Shilpa’s husband Raj Kundra is making a movie based on his life and his time in jail (he was arrested for allegedly creating pornographic content). The buzz is that he will act in the film and produce it. Ask Shilpa about it, and she says, “It’s not my place to say anything.”
Sikandar Kher discusses shooting with mother Kirron for a reality television show

Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; March 19, 2022)
The last time Kirron Kher was on the same set with son Sikandar Kher was when the latter assisted Sanjay Leela Bhansali on Devdas (2002). Two decades since then, the Khers reunite on screen for an episode of India's Got Talent.
“The experience of being with my mother for the first time on camera is something that didn’t hit me instantly. She is loved on the reality show for her warm and lovely persona. It was a breathtaking day for me personally,” said Sikandar, and added that he got to learn a lot from judges Malaika Arora and rapper Badshah. “When they are reviewing a talent, they speak so well.”
Sikandar took to the stage of India’s Got Talent to express his love for his mother, who courageously fought the battle against cancer. In November, Kirron rejoined the show, on which she has been a judge since its first season. “Maa is all I ever had. She gave up her entire career for me. [I want] to tell the world what an amazing and strong woman she is. She has lived life on her own terms and fought to be the woman she is,” added a proud Sikandar.
The love and fame I continue to receive is all thanks to television-Shilpa Shetty

Divya Kaushik (BOMBAY TIMES; February 13, 2022)
Shilpa Shetty Kundra, who can currently be seen on the show, India's Got Talent, believes that she owes the fame and popularity she has continued to receive over the years to reality shows. “I’ve been working for over 29 years now. In these 29 years, I haven’t done films for a very long time now, but the love, fame and popularity that I have still received from the audience is thanks to television. When you do films, the audience recognizes you for your work as a character, but the love that I receive from people now is for being me and the personality that people see on reality shows. It is thanks to television that people got to know the real me. This is the reason I have been associated with TV shows, and while I try to strike a balance between the different roles that I play — from being a mother to managing my own projects — I try to do one reality show too,” says Shilpa.
The actress talks to us about her return to movies after 12 years, why she feels OTT can never replace the big screen experience and all that she’s learnt from her reality show stints.
‘I BELIEVE THAT OTT CANNOT REPLACE THE CHARM OF FILMS’
Shilpa is keen to do more films this year — the big screen kind. “I believe that OTT cannot replace the charm of films. In the last few years, OTT has definitely given a lot of opportunities to actors and there has been an influx of content, but for me, doing films for the big screen will always remain special. I might start shooting another film this year, depending on what the pandemic situation will be,” she says.
The actress, who made a comeback to films after a hiatus of almost 12 years with Hungama 2 last year, is a tad disappointed that the film that was supposed to be her comeback film, Nikamma, is still awaiting its release date.
“I was going to make a comeback to films with a very different film, but that couldn’t happen and I couldn’t say no to Hungama 2 when it was offered to me, so everything changed. But I want to do more films this year, at least one film a year,” says Shilpa.
She adds that she decided to take a break from films as she wanted to focus on her own projects and also as a mom she needed to spend time with her children. “My son is nine now and is very busy with his school, while my daughter Samisha is two. So, I think I will be able to take up at least a film a year now,” says Shilpa.
‘LIKE EVERY SHOW AND FILM, REALITY SHOWS NEED DRAMA AND EMOTION TOO’
After being a judge on a number of dance reality shows, it is for the first time that Shilpa is a part of a show like India's Got Talent, that focuses on different talent and skills from across the country. The actress says that she agreed to do the show because her son Viaan is a big fan. “I thought he would like watching meon the show,” says the actress.
The actress adds that being on reality shows has been a learning experience for her. “I get to know so many stories of struggle, talent and how people beat all odds to achieve what they aim for in life. I come from a middle-class family too and I have also seen some hardships. I relate to so many stories that I come across,” says Shilpa.
To all those who might feel that the contestants’ struggle and background narrative are sometimes mere props to garner TRPs, the actress says, “These contestants are characters of these reality shows and like in films, one needs a background to support the characters’ stories, even these shows need those kind of stories and emotions. To all those who think this is drama, well, some drama is supposed to be part of shows.”

Love in Italy for Arjun Kapoor, Malaika Arora?

MUMBAI MIRROR (October 25, 2018)
In the last few weeks, Arjun Kapoor and good friend Malaika
Arora have been making heads turn after being spotted driving down in
the same car and seated next to each other at a recent fashion show. And
if that wasn’t enough to start tongues wagging, the duo walked out
hand-in-hand and set the stage on fire when the actor was a guest on a
talent hunt show which Malaika judges to promote his last release.
Immediately after Namaste England opened, Arjun flew off to Italy. It
was no coincidence that Malaika brought in her 45th birthday in the
European country too and threw gossip mills into a spin by posting a
picture against a graffiti wall with the word 'LOVE' in focus. The
accompanying text read, “We found LOVE in a hopeless place…. He looks at
me like nobody does with…”
She followed up this cryptic post on her return to Mumbai on Wednesday with one more picture, saying, “Soaking it all in n loving it…” Among the many 'likes' was one from Arjun too. He's been ‘liking’ many of her posts of late.
The picture-perfect moments had Karan Johar, her co-judge on India’s Got Talent, quizzing her on her return to the shoot from Europe, saying “What did you do there? How was your trip? Was it a trip?” The lady shot him and the camera a beatific smile and quipped, “It was trippy… It was blissful, if you must know,” before turning to the third judge, Kirron Kher, and thanking her for letting her take a day off to bring in her birthday. KJo was not done yet, and continued to probe, “The burning question is: Did you go alone?” and Malaika shot back, “Let that remain a burning question.” The exchange had Arjun’s uncle Sanjay Kapoor laughing out loud with emojis on the Insta post.
Is this an official confirmation that something is brewing? At a time when love is in the air, weddings are being announced and babies waiting to be delivered, one can only hope for another happily ever after in show town…
I am not making a film that can compare to Sanjay Leela Bhansali's work-Karan Johar

Completing two decades in B-Town, Karan Johar on helming his first period drama, Takht, and why he feels like a 'senior'
Sonil Dedhia (MID-DAY; October 15, 2018)
Karan Johar has pulled off a casting coup for his next, Takht - the period drama features Kareena Kapoor Khan, Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal, Bhumi Pednekar, Anil Kapoor and Janhvi Kapoor. While the stellar cast has already made the project one of the most awaited films, the filmmaker says roping in all the stars was easier said than done. "It was a big challenge, and it took me a while to finalise the cast because of the kind of characters that we have. But I am happy with the final cast."
In his two-decade-long career, Johar has established himself firmly as the master of romance dramas. Reportedly based on Aurangzeb and his elder brother Dara Shikoh, Takht sees him tackling a genre that he has not explored before. Ask him about the inevitable comparisons with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who has raised the bar with his period dramas, and Johar says, "Sanjay's canvases are amazing, and I am a fan of his work. But I am not making a film that can compare to Sanjay's work or anyone else's, for that matter. My film is true to the historical events that transpired."
Having given Bollywood some of its most loved films, Johar says his directorial debut — Kuch Kuch Hota Hai — holds a special place in his heart for obvious reasons. As the Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol starrer completes two decades tomorrow, he reflects, "Whatever I am today is because of that film. I complete 20 years in the industry, and I feel like a senior today. I remember every moment spent on that film. I remember Alia [Bhatt] telling me that she was six when the film released and she had the same haircut like Kajol. When Janhvi [Kapoor] recently told me she hasn't seen the film, I made her watch it."
Before he takes his magnum opus on floors, Johar is set to return as a judge on the fifth season of India's Got Talent. "The show has become a part of my life. I love it as it gives people a platform to showcase their talent. Trust me, almost seven out of ten contestants who perform on the show, go on to make a name for themselves."

Nikhil Chinapa and Ayushmann Khurrana were the initial hosts. Kirron has been part of every season with Karan and Malaika has joining her from season four. I'd love to judge India's Got Talent but I don't have the time to even breathe-Kirron Kher

Sankyutka Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 23, 2014)
She has entertained audiences with her bindaas comments and even bigger bindis as a judge on the reality TV show, India's Got Talent, since 2009.
But now that she is a Member of Parliament, Kirron Kher may step away from the judge's seat. Buzz is the actor-politician is ready to leave the talent show in favour of more politically correct endeavours.
When contacted Kirron agreed that her brash reel persona could pose a problem. "I will have to be careful to avoid outrageous or controversial topics because that could hinder my political career," she said.
Kirron, who was last seen in the Fawad Khan-Sonam Kapoor starrer Khoobsurat, says that she has been dividing her time between her constituency, Chandigarh and Delhi, with not much time spent in Mumbai. "I'd love to judge the show but I don't have the time to even breathe," concluded Kirron.
But when contacted, the channel spokesperson maintained that she is still on board. "Kirron Kher has been associated with the show since its inception and will be on the jury panel for the upcoming sixth season as well," said the spokesperson.
