I thought of ending my life many times in the last 6 years-Sajid Khan
9:30 AM
Posted by Fenil Seta

In an exclusive chat, filmmaker Sajid Khan speaks of the hell he went through after #MeToo allegations and how the industry has kept him from moving on despite a clean chit
Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; January 2, 2025)
He was shooting for Housefull 4 in 2018 when sexual harassment allegations by multiple women upturned his life. The storm of accusations — including claims of unwanted advances and harassment — upended his career, with work vanishing overnight. Sajid Khan, 54, became an accused in the #MeToo movement in Bollywood — called out, ridiculed and vilified. For six years, he chose silence. Until now. With trepidation in his voice, he recounts the toll the past years have taken on him, both mentally and physically.
How has life been for you over the last six years, since the #MeToo allegations?
I thought of ending my life many times in the last 6 years. It’s been extremely bad, in the sense that I’ve been out of work. Despite getting a clearance from Indian Film and Television Directors Association (IFTDA). I’m trying to get back on my feet. I had to sell my house and move to a rented flat because of no earnings. I was 14 when I started earning because my dad (actor, producer, and director, Kamran Khan) passed away, leaving me and (my sister) Farah (Khan Kunder, filmmaker and choreographer) with debts. Today, I wish my mum was alive (Menaka Irani died in 2024) to see me try to get back on my feet. More than her son, I was her caretaker. Life has been quite tough.
You’ve mentioned your blunt personality and its impact on your career. Do you think it contributed to the way things unfolded?
Looking back, yes. Now everybody does it on YouTube, but early on in my career, I used to say sensational things just to make headlines. When I worked on TV, my job was to entertain people. I used to rub many the wrong way...When I see some of my interviews today, I feel like taking a time machine back and stopping that guy — saying, ‘Idiot, what are you talking about? Why are you so brash?’ Words don’t matter; work does. Because I was so brash, I rubbed people the wrong way. I would apologize whenever I realized it, but when work stops, you start questioning your life. I’ve mellowed down. I just want to work to survive now.
How did you process the allegations and the trial that followed?
I left Housefull 4 because I didn’t want the dates to get shuffled. The producer, Sajid Nadiadwala, had put up a big set with 10–15 busy actors. Changing dates would’ve disrupted the film for years. Mine was a trial by media, very one-sided. What does a man work for? Respect. When that’s taken away, your self-respect comes into doubt. I was known for my offensive humour — I believed offence was the best defence. But I’ve learned the hard way. I never disrespected women, and I never will. My mother raised me to believe in gender equality. I didn’t realize my words would make me pay such a huge price.
How did your family react to the allegations?
Ten days before it happened, I was shooting in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, and my mum wasn’t well. When I had to leave the film, I was worried she’d have a heart attack if she found out. I told Farah (sister) to hide the newspapers from her. For 10 days, I pretended everything was fine, leaving the house and coming back as if I’d been on set... I’ve never, and will never, say anything against any woman. But yes, the last six years have been a period of self-assessment. Everyone else named in the movement went back to work, but I didn’t. That felt harsh. It made me realize I needed to change not just my life but also the way I spoke to people. I’m much more restrained now.
Was it difficult finding work during this time?
Meetings went well, but post-Covid, entertainment has changed drastically. Ultimately, it’s about how you present yourself and the strength of your script. Whenever I would approach studios, I was told that even if the script is good, your name is involved in MeToo and we are hesitating to sign you. I have not understood why after so many years when everyone else has moved on, I am not being given that chance. I have a film starting mid-year now, but there’s no guarantee of success. That’s the nature of the industry.
Why did you choose to stay silent all this while?
I didn’t want to speak. My mother told me, ‘Silence is golden’. Perception is like mist — it has to be cleared.
Your appearance on Bigg Boss in 2022 was seen by many as an attempt to whitewash your image, especially after you were suspended by IFTDA in 2018 following sexual harassment allegations during the #MeToo movement. Since being cleared in 2019, what do you have to say about the perception that your return to the spotlight is an attempt to reshape your public image?
I didn’t read about that. I don’t read negative reviews. I began my career with a hit film, Heyy Baby (2007), which ironically received negative reviews. When I ventured into TV, a powerful editor went after me, and after the show went off-air, they wrote, ‘Thank God, it was the worst thing to hit TV.’ You can’t please everyone all the time. That’s just the way life is. Honestly, there were moments when I even contemplated suicide.
Did you seek therapy during those tough times?
No. I talked myself out of it. Farah is settled and doing well, and someone had to take care of my mum. I’ve always been the jester among my friends — the one who cheers everyone up. I told myself, ‘This can’t be your life’s book. It’s just a chapter’.
Your upcoming film might bring renewed criticism. Are you prepared?
Which film today isn’t criticized? Social media thrives on it. If comments cost money, there’d be fewer of them. I won’t react. Pompous promotions don’t matter. The audience decides based on the trailer.
The labels from the #MeToo movement — how do you deal with them now?
They affected me deeply, to the point where I wanted to end my life. But I have no animosity towards anyone. Jo kismat mein likha hota hai, woh hota hai. I’ve endured a lot. Six years of loss — losing my mother, my house... She didn’t just pass away due to illness. She was also weighed down by the mental stress of worrying about me. I feel like I let her down in some way. But now, I just want to move forward with my life. Some people cry over shoes, while others don’t even have feet. My job is simple: to entertain people. That’s all I know how to do.
I’ve been offered films opposite big stars in Bollywood, but those characters didn’t add any value to the script-Pooja Hegde

Pooja Hegde says she was offered many films opposite big stars, but the roles didn’t add any value to the script
Titas Chowdhury (HINDUSTAN TIMES; April 2, 2022)
In a career spanning about a decade, actor Pooja Hegde has only done two Hindi films. Talking about her sporadic Bollywood career, Hegde says, “After Mohenjo Daro (2016), I waited, and after a big gap, did Housefull 4 (2019) because the banner was good. That film was a stepping stone for me. It gave me Kabhi Eid Kabhi Diwali and Cirkus (her upcoming Hindi movies).”
Quiz her if she was unsatisfied with the offers coming her way, and the 31-year-old says, “It was a conscious decision to not do Hindi films. I didn’t want to do them just for the sake of it or do roles that didn’t matter to the storyline. I’ve been offered films opposite big stars, but those characters didn’t add any value to the script.”
During her time away from Bollywood, she worked intensively in the Tamil and Telugu film industries and created a fanbase for herself, which she believes gave her the confidence to navigate through her Hindi film career.
“My biggest boon is that the Telugu audience has accepted me as one of their own. The south has given me so much respect. And that gave me strength to pick and choose the films I wanted to do in Hindi. Sometimes, it (Bollywood) can be a little unforgiving if you aren’t from a film background or you don’t have the right push; it takes some time to get the kinds of roles that you want to do,” Hegde elaborates.
But the Radhe Shyam actor is happy that she is taken more seriously today. “After Most Eligible Bachelor (2021) did well at the box office, people began to take me more seriously and began to think that I’m more bankable because it grossed Rs. 50 crore. Now, I’m getting a lot of female-oriented films,” Hegde wraps up.

SOORYAVANSHI is comfortably the second highest grossing film of all time in Gujarat despite coming after the pandemic as it stands at 41.50 crore in the state after its fifth weekend. Only BAAHUBALI 2: THE CONCLUSION stands ahead with a huge 60 crore nett plus.
The Diwali period helps in Gujarat but SOORYAVANSHI has comfortably beaten Diwali HITS like GOLMAAL AGAIN (36 cr) and HOUSEFULL 4 (33 cr) and there is still some gas left in the film and may just edge past the 42 crore nett mark. The Gujarat market is as strong as it was before the pandemic and its not just about the record collections of SOORYAVANSHI but even ANTIM - THE FINAL TRUTH and TADAP have pretty much performed as they would before the pandemic.
The business of the film in Ahmedabad is on par with Delhi city which is phenomenal as for most films in Ahmedabad would not even be 50% of Delhi city.
The top Nett Grossers in Gujarat/Saurashta of all time are as follows.

LAXMII confirmed its BLOCKBUSTER status on satellite as it recorded a record third screening of 1 crore plus impressions. Only BAAHUBALI 2: THE CONCLUSION has managed a 1 crore plus number on its third screening. LAXMII had a huge premiere but they way its holding is pretty insane especially as the content of the film looked mainly for Maharashtra, Gujarat and the Central belt.
The film did not get a theatrical release but got big numbers on digital but its these satellite numbers which confirm the acceptance of the public for the film. A lot was said about the film mainly in a negative way but the public is watching the film and how. At the time of release, there was no theatrical to counteract the negativity but now satellite has put the record straight.
The film is on par with HOUSEFULL 4 after three screenings and HOUSEFULL 4 is the biggest outright Hindi blockbuster (not counting the BAAHUBALI films) on satellite in recent times.
Below are the figures for first three screenings of HOUSEFULL 4 and LAXMII. The number is the impressions which is basically the number of television sets which viewed the film.
Laxmii

LAXMII has confirmed its huge satellite success as it registered over 70 lakh impressions on its second screening. After the insane numbers of the first viewing, it has done better than BAAGHI 3, TANHAJI: THE UNSUNG WARRIOR and WAR on its second screening. Its first two viewing numbers are 3.23 crore which are also better than these films.
The film is not as big as HOUSEFULL 4 but that had crazy numbers and is still getting them and is the third biggest satellite blockbuster in recent times after the two BAAHUBALI films. LAXMII is a SUPER HIT film on satellite and if 40 lakh plus numbers hold for next few screenings, it would be a BLOCKBUSTER. But more than that its pretty clear the film has actually found appreciation somewhere with the audience despite what was said and is maybe is said now also.

LAXMII had a huge premiere on television despite coming six months
after its digital premiere. The film had also proved to be the biggest
HIT on OTT on paid platforms when released though the film was generally
badmouthed by the media. It was said the film would have hardly done
100 crore nett in the theatres and that too on Diwali and the film is a
total disaster. But digital results were saying something else and now
these insane television figures prove that the film has found a huge
audience. These television numbers have come even after the huge
negative media.
LAXMII is second only to BAAHUBALI 2: THE CONCLUSION as far as television
premieres go with 2.5 crore plus impressions. It has beaten the other
Akshay Kumar starrer, HOUSEFULL 4, to go over 2 crore impressions but that
film is a huge blockuster on satellite due to insane numbers after the
premiere again and again. It remains to be seen whether LAXMII follows
the HOUSEFULL 4 route but the blockbuster premiere pretty much confirms
the success of the film with the audience.
The top films on television

I didn’t expect to get such a positive response for my most negative portrayal-Bobby Deol

Onkar Kulkarni (BOMBAY TIMES; March 14, 2021)
In 2018, Bobby Deol was seen in the multistarrer Race 3, a film that was touted to be his comeback to the movies in a grand manner. Not that the actor, known for films like Gupt, Ajnabee, Humraaz and Apne, had even planned to take a hiatus, but by his own admission, wasn’t offered any plum projects for many years. Interestingly, in 2020, Bobby ventured into the digital space with MX Player’s much-acclaimed web series Aashram and things turned around for him like never before. His portrayal of godman, Kashipur Waale Baba Nirala, not only fetched him immense love from the audience, but also the Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival Award as Best Actor-Web Series.
Talking about this new turn in his career, Bobby says, “I have spent 25 years in the industry and never saw such a response before for my work. It is just phenomenal. It feels like I have just begun my career.”
The actor further talks about the widely-watched web show that presented him in a different light. He shares, “I had never imagined playing something like this on screen. Whatever experiences I went through all my life helped me create a character that you saw me play in Aashram. I am so grateful to Prakash ji (Prakash Jha, director) for believing in me. When he offered me this part, I was taking a risk by stepping out of my comfort zone.
Bobby says, “The best part is that I didn’t expect to get such a positive response for my most negative portrayal on the screen (laughs!). A project like Aashram kept me on my toes throughout the shoot. Not just me, my father, my mother and even Sunny (Deol) has been receiving a lot of calls where people have only said great things about my work on the show. My mom was in tears when her friend called her and told her, ‘Your son played a villain, yet we loved him so much.’”
The actor further tells us how he had been keenly waiting for meaty projects and the OTT platforms gave him a chance to explore the actor in him. “I always dreamt of waking up every day and leaving for work. And that is exactly what’s happening now. I am happy that with OTT projects, I could explore the actor in me, and with movies, I could reach out to the younger generation,” he says, adding, “For many years, I had not worked so much, and the younger generation had not noticed me. I knew that Race 3, which starred the country’s superstar Salman Khan, would reach the masses. Whether or not the film did well didn’t matter to me, because I only wanted to get noticed, and thankfully that happened. Also, the film reached a large section of the audience. Likewise, post Housefull 4 (2019), my friends’ sons and daughters who were not familiar with my work as an actor sent me messages. I got noticed again with these projects, but I was still on the lookout for meatier roles, and eventually, came in the digital projects. Now, I am happy that people can see that I am capable of portraying varied characters.”
Moving on, bring up the subject of the government’s recent efforts to form guidelines to regulate content on the OTT space, and the actor replies, “I believe that people should be responsible and avoid including elements that might not be necessary in the script and are being added just for the sake of gaining viewership. There should be some kind of regulation, but you cannot introduce something so strong that it takes away creativity from honest filmmakers. There are so many honest filmmakers, who want to do good work, and they should not be regulated to such a level that they won’t be able to showcase what they want to express.”
Boycott drama fails as Salman Khan & Akshay Kumar's films fetches record viewership on TV & digital

The has been this boycott word for the last few months but where are
all these boycotts. Yes the cinema results have been bad since they
reopened but that is more to do with Coronavirus and no real films on the screen
but Hindi films have still scored on satellite and digital.
It shows that the things that people like they will watch irrespective
of what sort of trends are started as this trend world is not the real
world. In fact these people involved in such trends may also be actually
watching the stuff that they are telling others to boycott.
There was these boycott Salman Khan and boycott Akshay Kumar trends a
few months back and at the same time films like HUM SAATH SAATH HAIN and TIGER ZINDA HAI were finding strong audiences on television and this
was every other week while HOUSEFULL 4 was a rage on satellite.
Then there was boycott LAXMII campaign but that film got a record audience for
OTT when it released and even post release it has done pretty well and
that is when its still being called one of the worst films ever. Now its
the turn of COOLIE NO 1 to get the treatment. The trailer may
not be at par with say a BAAHUBALI but its pretty decent and like LAXMII, this film may also
find an audience irrespective of what is being said.
A boycott has to be organic and that is if the public do not like
something they will automatically boycott and not shout about it as
seems to be the case here. It can be said the other releases in the last
six months did not find an audience but that was because of content and
not a boycott. Actually it would be funny if SADAK 2 found some sort of
audience on television as it would really show the worth of this
boycott crap as the film is actually very poor. The huge importance of
the film industry can be seen by the fact the people calling for
boycotts are so engrossed in all details of the film industry and try to
make someting out of things which are not even an issue.
There was a boycott for CHHAPAAK earlier this year but again it failed
because of the poor content and not because there were groups out there
who were calling for a boycott of the film. The pandemic might have
stopped films releasing in theatres but the story is still about
entertaining content and if its there then a film will someway find an
audience irrespective of what is being called for or said. Actually in
this time, sub standard content can even do better due to a lack of
content due to the pandemic.

This year there have five films which are among the top 25 television
premieres of all time. WAR, TANHAJI: THE UNSUNG WARRIOR, BAAGHI 3, SAAHO (Hindi) and DARBAR (Hindi) are the five films from this year and
they all topped the 1 crore mark for their premieres while WAR crossed 2
crore.
WAR had the best premiere but was the weakest one of the lot in subsequent screenings. The dubbed films SAAHO and DARBAR have had great results and for SAAHO, this is coming after a very good box office run of 150 crore nett. The other film to get good numbers on television this year was PATI PATNI AUR WOH which hit 88 lakh plus and STREET DANCER which got over 70 lakh despite releasing on satellite six months after digital release.

Laxmii reiterates the importance of the box office

Box Office India Trade Network
LAXMII released last week again reiterates the importance of the box
office as without this, there is no judge. The film has faced a double
barrel sword with the negativity in the media and the leftover
negativity on social media for the industry. These things will also
happen for the bigger films as it hardly matters if you are negative for
a LOOTCASE, GUNJAN SAXENA or LUDO as that hardly makes noise and is not
noticed.
The ground realities for the LAXMII are different from what they are made out to be. The film has gone wrong in certain points and it would not have done well in all circuits but its not the worst film ever made and actually would have held some appeal for Maharashtra, Gujarat and CP Berar (Nizam may have done decent also). A Diwali release would have bumped up the audience further as Gujarat is phenomenal on Diwali for this genre and Maharashtra also gets a big boost. North would have been struggle as there its grandness and gloss or relatability which works and here the grandness is not there and a transgender theme takes away all relatability.
The scenario takes us back to last year when another Akshay Kumar starrer HOUSEFULL 4 was lambasted by one and all but the results were totally different as it went on cross 200 crore nett and become the highest grosser of Akshay Kumar. Now LAXMII is not a HOUSEFULL 4 in terms of canvas or entertainment so it would have not reached those levels but its also not a PAD MAN or GOLD to remain on the lower side especially on Diwali.
The facts are that if the Coronavirus pandemic had by chance come last year and cinemas were shut then HOUSEFULL 4 would have been called a disaster or a totally rejected film and the only reason it was not called this is because the box office was there to prove otherwise. Yes there are the phenomenal satellite results which continue even till today but those come at a later date. Forget a HOUSEFULL 4 or LAXMII but imagine if there was no box office for the likes of SHOLAY (1975), KRANTI (1981) or GADAR (2001) which are among the most appreciated Hindi films of all time but what was being said about them was the opposite. The box office set the records straight.
What comes out of the mouth can never be taken seriously and this has been seen in the last few months with what has been said about the industry. The mouth is free and there is no cost to open it no matter how much crap comes out from it but the box office has a cost of a ticket so is the actual reality. Last year a terrible film like SAAND KI AANKH was supposed to give competition to HOUSEFULL 4 as the claim was public reports were good so it should at least trend better. But reviews and public reports are two different things and HOUSEFULL 4 even sustained far better.
This year the campaigning seems to be for another disaster LUDO. The film which will be unwatchable for most is being called a good film and again this is where the box office is needed for the actual facts so the stupidity does not last too long as it will now. Just like LAXMII would not have reached the levels of HOUSEFULL 4 then this LUDO would have struggled to even reach a SAAND KI AANKH.
The fact is that the box office is the ultimate judge as a box office vote is through the pocket and not the mouth.
It's a bleak Diwali as Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari opens at around 10% occupancy

With Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari registering 10 per cent occupancy, trade analysts gauge losses incurred by industry this Diwali
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; November 16, 2020)
After the eight-month shutdown, it was time for the first day, first show across cinemas in Mumbai. On Sunday, theatres lifted the curtain with the Diwali release, Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari. As per early estimates, the Manoj Bajpayee, Diljit Dosanjh and Fatima Sana Shaikh-starrer recorded an average occupancy of 10 per cent. The permissible occupancy has been set at 50 per cent by the state government.
The stark difference can be noticed when compared to the box-office figures of last year's Diwali releases, Housefull 4, Saand Ki Aankh and Made In China. The three films had amassed Rs 62.47 crore over the opening weekend, with the Akshay Kumar comedy leading from the front. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh says, "We can't expect numbers to pour in overnight. The industry was shut for such a long time. It's almost like being in the ICU; this is the healing phase before the industry starts running again. Moreover, one must consider that when survival is under threat, entertainment won't be high on people's priority list."
Depending on the film's merit and its star power, the average opening day figure of a Diwali offering reads between Rs 20 crore to Rs 50 crore. Aamir Khan's Thugs Of Hindostan (2018) had registered Rs 50.75 crore on day one, recording the highest opening figure in Hindi cinema before sinking at the box-office. Besides the unusual circumstances, Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari has opened in fewer screens despite being the solo player this weekend. "There is hardly much occupancy for the film. The footfall will continue to be low unless a big film like Sooryavanshi or '83 hits screens. Most producers are avoiding a staggered release and waiting for the world market to open which is a tough situation amidst renewed lockdowns in Europe," reasons Adarsh.
Both films are pushed to 2021 and will be releasing anytime before March, as per the trade buzz.
Distributor Akshaye Rathi says filmmakers will have to take a leap of faith and line up big releases to lure audiences. "In Tamil Nadu, 850 screens have opened, and even at 50 per cent seating, three-fourth of auditoriums are full. We don't know what the forthcoming releases are. Some interesting movies have to be lined up to compel the audience to step out. Producers will have to line up films like Mumbai Saga and Bunty Aur Babli 2 that can bring people to the theatres."
We have a complimentary dose of Ranveer Singh's energy on set-Pooja Hegde

Bagging Cirkus opposite Ranveer Singh, Pooja Hegde on reviving her career after Mohenjo Daro debacle
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; October 31, 2020)
Pooja Hegde is amused that her date diary is chock-a-block in the middle of a pandemic. Currently filming Radhe Shyam in Italy, she will kick off the shoot of Rohit Shetty's Cirkus when she returns to the bay next month. "I love Rohit Shetty films. My dad and I watched Simmba together, and we were hooting at Ajay Devgn's entry. I had first met Rohit at Ramoji [Film City] in Hyderabad a few years ago. This offer came my way out of the blue," says Hegde, who will team up with Ranveer Singh, Jacqueline Fernandez and Varun Sharma in the laugh riot.
Given how different the worlds of Shakespeare and Shetty are, one wonders what The Comedy Of Errors looks like when viewed through the filmmaker's lens. "It will be a masala film; it's his version rather than an adaptation. Plus, we have a complimentary dose of Ranveer's energy on set," she laughs.
After making her Bollywood debut with Mohenjo Daro (2016), Hegde went missing from the Hindi film circuit, resurfacing last year with Housefull 4. Ask her how she emerged stronger after the debacle of the Hrithik Roshan-starrer, and she says, "An actor's first film is their show-reel to the world. I was under contract, so I hadn't signed another film during the period. Its failure was heart-breaking. Eventually, South films came along, and work attracted more work. I held off signing Hindi films because I needed a sturdy second movie. I built on the success of Housefull 4, and here I am!"
Nearly 5000 tickets on Day 1 sold as cinemas open in the post-Coronavirus world

Cinemas opened up in many parts of the country on Thursday though the
properties opening up was very limited as were the screenings in these
cinemas which opened and it is expected that more will open up today.
The response was muted which was expected but with nearly 5000 tickets
selling across the country, it is not that bad considering how many
cinemas actually opened and what sort of content was being played. It
would not have been a surprise if the number was in hundreds rather than
thousands. The biggest chain in the country PVR sold around 700 tickets
on very limited screenings which could well have been the all India
number considering the situation.
These ticket sales came from mainly English and regional content with Hindi having a minor contribution. This is expected also as its old films being screened and on top many of them are flop films like SECTION 375 and THAPPAD. The HIT titles like GOOD NEWWZ and HOUSEFULL 4 have been screened on television with the latter getting over a record breaking 10 crore impressions in screenings over the last 7-8 months. So there will not be an audience here either especially in these social distancing conditions. The biggest HIT of 2020 TANHAJI: THE UNSUNG WARRIOR also had screenings but this film had also ended its run when theatres shut though its possible it could find an audience in Maharashtra where it turned out to be one of the biggest blockbusters ever. But the state government have not given the green light for cinemas to open in Maharashtra.

The numbers will get better as more properties open up but it cant go far without any new content and this is a huge issue. KHAALI PEELI will not make it cinemas this week due to an issue over print costs between the distributors and exhibitors though that is not the type of film which will get audiences into theatres in these times.
Its pretty much certain that distributors and exhibitors are going to have issues agreeing sharing terms with the new content as distributors will want more compared to the pre covid19 terms as business will be limited. So what happens here is an unknown. TENET which releases across the world in August had better than normal terms in most countries. This film will be the hope for some sort of audience in the Hindi markets while certain territories may get some public in with regional films.
Short dresses look amazing on Pooja Hegde because they show off her long legs-Lakshmi Lehr

DESI DOES IT!: The brief was to go with Indian traditional wear for a film promotion on a TV show. So, we went with this tiered lehenga-choli in yellow. The silhouette was modern despite the desi vibe
As told to Ankita Chaurasia (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 25, 2020)
I started working with Pooja Hegde when we collaborated for the promotions of Housefull 4. At the risk of it being a cliché, I have to say that she is very easy to work with, open to suggestions and experimentation. She may be only a few films old, but Pooja is very sure of who she is as a person. I want that confidence to reflect in her clothes, which is why we don’t hesitate in going with bold silhouettes and colours. We have several fitting sessions where we discuss every look that I have shortlisted; why it can or cannot work. Pooja has inputs, but she is not fussy and that makes her every stylist’s dream come true. She has a great body, so most things work on her. Also, since she has been doing a mix of different kinds of attires, she is not associated with any one particular look.
Her personal preferences are cute, girly clothes. I think short dresses look amazing on her because they show off her long legs. She loves trying out different colours, but nothing works like yellow, which looks beautiful against her skin tone. But if you ask me to create a signature look for Pooja, I would put her in a red, body-hugging gown with cherry lips. She has never dressed in such a flirty manner, but for some reason, I feel it will go really well with her personality. She has the body and attitude to work it.
SHORT CUT: The vibe that we were going for with this look was high-street casualchic. Denim shorts paired with a simple red tank top and a jacket worked well with the striped stilettos
JUST PEACHY: Pooja has well-toned abs and this peach co-ord set—crop top and highwaisted skirt—looked amazing on her. We paired it with some simple studs and a pair of white strappy stilettos
TAKE A BOW: A simple, classic white shirt dress that is made distinctive with a huge bow in front, was perfect for a radio show. We went with minimal accessories around the neck, keeping the rest of the look clean and graceful
HOP, SKIP, AND JUMP!: We elevated a regular denim jumpsuit by pairing it with a neon-yellow tank top that is currently all the rage. The look was completed with a pair of white high-tops and glares, making it perfect for a day out
Race 3 boosted my career, and people noticed me; I’ll always be grateful to Salman-Bobby Deol

Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; August 25, 2020)
Portraying the role of a gritty and brooding cop in Class of '83 has brought Bobby Deol back into the game, and the actor admits he only wants to experiment with the kind of roles he takes up, and this one is a far cry from whatever he has done till date.“That was the challenging part. I’ve played a cop earlier also — in Kranti and Chor Machaye Shor (both 2002) — and they were larger-than-life characters. But this one was very real — the journey of an honest cop (Vijay Singh), who sacrifices his family life, and the turmoil he went through fighting this system. That was very exciting to play,” he says.
Given that Deol shouldered the entire project, which also marks his comeback as the lead after multi-starrers Race 3 (2018) and Housefull 4 (2019), makes it even more special. He tells us, “It was a character-driven film, and that’s what I was looking for. It’s amazing that OTT platforms are giving actors such opportunities. For me, Race 3 boosted my career, and people noticed me — I’ll always be grateful to Salman (Khan, actor) for taking me in that film. Then Housefull 4 took my career forward. At the end of the day, one is always looking for a role that gets you noticed as an actor. It’s been 25 years for me in the industry and in the next 25, I want to play interesting characters.”
Deol has been getting rave reviews for his act in the recently released Netflix film. Ask him the best compliment he has received so far, and he laughs saying each one of them means a lot. “They’re such a boost to your self-esteem, and make you feel energised. I’ve been trying to do work which will get appreciated, and help me move further. I put faith in all my fans... that makes producers and directors notice me. I’m excited people have praised my work,” he gushes.
However, he’s quick to add that getting a call from the film’s producer, actor Shah Rukh Khan, was an icing on the cake. “From someone like him, who has achieved so much in life as an actor, it’s so nice to hear that. My brother (Sunny Deol) was so happy. Obviously, he’s family, but even then there was a glow in his eyes, seeing me excel as an actor. My sister couldn’t see Bobby, but only the character. That’s something you always wish as an actor,” Deol ends.

HOUSEFULL 4 and TOTAL DHAMAAL continue to dominate television in the lockdown period with every screening in peak periods fetching a strong rating. HOUSEFULL 4 is now touching 7 crore impressions after seven peak screenings while TOTAL DHAMAAL is at 8 crore impressions after 11 peak screenings. Only 5 or six films will have topped this number in their premieres last year.
Both films have delivered post release better than any other films in the last decade barring the two BAAHUBALI films. The lockdown period has also seen success for WAR, DARBAR (dubbed) and PATI PATNI AUR WOH.

Like Star Wars, Baahubali has changed cinema-Rana Daggubati

Rana Daggubati on decade-old career replete with surprises, including a rapper turn
Akash Bhatnagar (MUMBAI MIRROR; April 27, 2020)
In 2010, Rana Daggubati debuted as an actor in the Telugu film Leader. A year later, he stepped into the Hindi film industry with Rohan Sippy’s Dum Maaro Dum. Reflecting on his decade-long journey, the actor, who has become a household name with Baahubali, says that he feels fortunate for the variety and diversity in his filmography. “I guess, that’s what growing up means. Today, I can confidently say that I’m a better actor, with a better knowledge of cinema,” asserts the actor who has a Telugu production coming up and intends to produce Hindi films in the future.
Several actors from down South have forayed into Bollywood, but have quickly returned to their original fan base and not ventured out again, but Rana continues to do the occasional Hindi film, his last outing being Housefull 4, despite remaining rooted in Tollywood. How does he manage to shuttle between the two industries? “That’s something even I’ve been trying to figure out,” he chuckles. “A Telugu film usually takes 10 months to a year to wrap up, so, I realised early on that I couldn’t be a part of Mumbai’s pop culture ever. There won’t be frequent airport sightings nor would I be papped leaving the gym. So, I focussed instead on scripts and that’s lead to interesting career choices, be it the submarine film, The Ghazi Attack, the epic Baahubali or the upcoming Haathi Mere Saathi with 15 elephants as my co-stars.”His jungle adventure was to open on April 2, and while it’s disappointing to have to wait for people to see it, Rana has found a positive co-relation between what is happening around the world and the film, which is about nature fighting back to survive. “The animals are happier today and the waters are cleaner as humans stay home,” muses the actor, who, during the Coronavirus lockdown, is revisiting his first love, animation.
Starting out in 2004, Rana worked as a visual effects coordinator for about eight years. Now, he is back to watching, reading up on and exploring different animation forms. He admits something is brewing on that front, but won’t divulge details.
Mention Baahubali, a special effects extravaganza, which, he admits, “took exactly half of my career”, and Rana remembers the thrill of being a part of something really big for five years, before it was unveiled to the world. “Nobody on that set had done anything like this before in their career, be it an actor or a technician. It was like being in an acting school, a film school and a visual effects school all at once, with a great teacher, S S Rajamouli. Like Star Wars in the ‘70s, this is one landmark film that has changed cinema forever,” he asserts, adding that Baahubali opened up the industry to bigger gambles and higher stakes. “India has scale now. An Indian film today is not restricted to any one language.”
Rana was supposed to do Ajay Devgn’s Bhuj: The Pride of India, but pulled out of the film last year. He informs that he couldn’t accommodate it because he was shooting for a Telugu film then, plus, his look in Haathi Mere Saathi was so unique, he couldn’t transition out of it to do another project so quickly.
But while he couldn’t fly high in Bollywood, he did make his debut as a singer last year in the Telugu film, Action, featuring Vishal and Tamannaah in the lead. “This was a con job, Vishal is a good friend and one day, he landed up in Hyderabad and asked me to rap a portion for the song 'Lights, Camera, Action'. I did it just like that,” he says nonchalantly. Will we see him rap and sing in Hindi too? “No, that I will leave to the singers and try to focus on saying my dialogue properly,” guffaws the actor.

Kanika Kapoor, Ramayan top lockdown searches

BOMBAY TIMES (April 26, 2020)
A month of Coronavirus lockdown has changed a lot for Indians. As per recent data, the online search trends during this month reflect this change.
KANIKA KAPOOR BECOMES THE MOST-SEARCHED INDIAN CELEB
Till the beginning of March, Kanika Kapoor was known as the Baby Doll singer. The playback singer was popular, but hardly the talk of the town. That, however, changed last month when she was tested positive for COVID-19, followed by a controversy on her social appearances in the week preceding her diagnosis. In fact, Kanika was so talked about in the last few weeks that she dethroned Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Rajinikanth to be the most-searched celebrity as per a release by Yahoo India.
According to a statement released by the search engine, “Kanika Kapoor wasn’t just the most-searched female celebrity, she was the most-searched celebrity among both male and female celebs, throughout the lockdown.”
RAMAYAN TOPS LOCKDOWN ENTERTAINMENT SEARCH
Last month, when Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar announced the return of Ramayan on small screen, it brought back childhood memories for many. And now, the show has topped the mostsearched entertainment source chart.
As per the search engine, “It was entertainment as usual pre-lockdown, with netizens in India searching for Bigg Boss, Drive, Tanhaji, Housefull 4 and Good Newwz as their top entertainment searches. After the lockdown, Ramayan broke through overnight to become the top entertainment search after it was rerun on Doordarshan.”

OTT PLATFORMS, TELEVISION WITNESS A SPIKE IN VIEWERSHIP
Film is a powerful medium and is widely consumed by people across the country. A major chunk of this population regularly watches movies in cinemas. Sadly, theatres have been shut since more than a month due to lockdown and amid rising Coronavirus cases. Most of the people are locked up in their homes and to tide over their boredom, they have started watching more of television and OTT. As a result, their ratings have increased substantially.
Talking of television, the shoots have come to a halt because of obvious reasons. The channels have therefore started to air old episodes of popular daily soaps. Yet, they are getting good viewership. Meanwhile, a masterstroke was pulled off with the decision to have the re-run of successful mythological shows like Ramayan and Mahabharat. These were aired on Doordarshan, just the way it was done in the late 80s. The response was mind-blowing. Doordarshan emerged as one of the top channels in terms of viewership, which has not happened in a long time. Their other shows like Buniyaad, Shrimaan Shrimati etc too have made a comeback and have been lapped up.
Meanwhile, the movie screenings too have recorded an increase in viewings. Last year’s biggest hit War had its television premiere during lockdown and got a huge 2 crore impressions approx, one of the highest ever. The other films like Housefull 4, Total Dhamaal, Pati Patni Aur Woh etc too are doing very well, more so because of the lockdown.
As for OTT, it too has taken advantage. The subscribers of almost all streaming platforms have increased. Some popular series released new seasons of their shows like Money Heist, Four More Shots Please etc and the response has been very encouraging. Also, viewers have been discovering many more shows and movies which they previously missed because of lack of time. Amusingly, a 2011 film, titled Contagion, became one of the most watched films worldwide. It tells the story of a disease that goes out of control and is eerily similar to the current Coronavirus pandemic.
The lockdown or rather the restrictions are expected to go on till a long time. And if you feel, OTT and TV channels will continue to benefit, then you might be mistaken. There’s a fear that viewers will soon reach a saturation point and might move away from these mediums. At a webinar recently, a speaker remarked that many have consumed the material that they would have otherwise consumed in 3 years in just 3 months! Also, OTT platforms, after a point, won’t have anything new to offer as their productions have halted as well. So a few months down the line, they too will feel the pinch as they’ll struggle to bring out new content. There’s similar fear about re-runs of TV shows as well.
Ultimately, the hope is that the curve gets flattened soon and things get back to normal.

HOUSEFULL 4 and TOTAL DHAMAAL are running riot on satellite emerging the biggest television blockbusters in the satellite era after the two BAAHUBALI films. The Coronavirus lockdown has probably given the films a boost in terms of numbers in the recent screenings but they were recording huge numbers even before the lockdown.
HOUSEFULL 4 has recorded 6.28 crore impressions in six viewings while TOTAL DHAMAAL is at 7.40 crore after 10 viewings. These are peak viewings which register. HOUSEFULL 4 is the biggest ever for Akshay Kumar on satellite as well as box office in terms of collections while TOTAL DHAMAAL is the biggest ever on satellite for Ajay Devgn though TANHAJI: THE UNSUNG WARRIOR is the biggest at the box office in terms of collections and footfalls.
The numbers are impressions which are television sets and the reach which is the number of people would be around 22.50 crore for 7 crore impressions. This is calculated on the reach given for impressions for general viewing programs.
The lockdown is sure to boost numbers and WAR did extremely well with 2 crore plus impressions going by its TRP rating, the biggest ever for Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff. PATI PATNI AUR WOH also scored recording 88.40 lakh impressions which is second best for Kartik Aaryan after LUKA CHUPPI while CHHAPAAK failed even in the lockdown.
