As the couple reunite on screen after eight years with Pashminna, Gauri and Hiten reflect on their 19-year marriage and kids
Letty Mariam Abraham (MID-DAY; October 31, 2023)
In the early 2000s, Hiten Tejwani and Gauri Pradhan were among the most-loved couples on television. The duo, who first featured together in an ad, soon headlined Kutumb. That was the beginning of their success story. Those who missed their magic then can witness it in Pashminna - Dhaage Mohabbat Ke. The two actors are returning to the screen after eight years with the love story. mid-day caught up with the pair on the show’s set to discuss the experience of working together again and how they keep their romance alive after being married for 19 years.
Edited excerpts from the interview.
What’s your secret to keeping the romance alive in your marriage?
Gauri Pradhan: We understand each other and give one another space. We are not into each other all the time. I am a person who needs her space. He is entertaining; with him going non-stop, I don’t need to switch on my television [laughs]. When you are in a relationship, your partner changes you. While I am still a quiet and reserved person, it has changed [to a degree] because of Hiten and the kids. The credit goes to him [for keeping the romance alive].
Hiten Tejwani: Love is shown not only by saying it every day, but by doing things for each other. Understanding and supporting one another play a big role. I know that she is doing whatever she can for the kids as a mother, while I am constantly on shoots. All I have to do is be there for her.
You both are stark opposites of each other. What was that one common point of attraction?
GP: There is no similarity between us, be it in terms of our background or families. Now, my parents dote on him.
HT: [On the set], I saw everybody talking to each other. If I talked to a girl, she would respond. It was easy that way; I’d ask for her number or probably a date. But she didn’t look at anybody and was buried in her book.
Was taking a sabbatical always on the cards for you?
GP: I had decided that I’d take a sabbatical after having kids. That’s why we [waited] a long time [to have kids] because we wanted to work and travel. When they happened, I totally wanted to be with them.
Have your kids watched your shows?
HT: No, but the kids are excited to see us together on screen [in Pashminna]. For this generation [usually] everything is cringey. I’ve shown them our first ad together. The way I see it, some of their friends will eventually tell them about their [famous] parents. At that time, everybody will sit down together, watch [our shows] and probably laugh at us or appreciate our lives.
Tell us about your characters in Pashminna.
HT: There are a lot of layers to Avinash. It is an interesting character because he is a part of all the twists and turns in the storyline.
GP: I play a single mother to Pashminna [Isha Sharma], but we are more like sisters. While I give her the freedom to be who she is, my only advice to her is to not fall for a tourist. It’s a unique relationship.
How does it feel reuniting on screen?
GP: Fans have been keen to see us together on screen. We’ve also been waiting for a long time to find something unique. Pashminna is a riveting love story and it was exactly what we were looking for.
What is it like to shoot in Kashmir?
HT: I am shooting here for the first time. Kashmir is a beautiful place, the air is so fresh and clear.
GP: I had shot for a show called Noorjahan with Siddharth’s [P Malhotra, Pashminna producer] father in Kashmir. It was just a one-week schedule. We shot the aesthetically scenic parts in the Mughal Gardens and Nishat Bagh. Back then, Kashmir was not a commercial [tourist hub] as it has become now. But the warmth of the place hasn’t changed.

Hiten Tejwani is glad that schools have restarted, says everyone needs to learn to live with the coronavirus around
Kavita Awaasthi (HINDUSTAN TIMES; February 2, 2022)
Actor Hiten Tejwani’s kids have started going to school again and he is glad that “normalcy” has returned to their lives.
As a parent, he had concerns about vaccines for his 11-year-old twins — son Nevaan and daughter Katya, but also elaborates, “They will get it when they are eligible. Till then one hopes they stay safe. We are taking all the protocols for their safety at home and when we step out. In fact, their school, too, is taking lot of precautions including testing kids and only ones who are negative after RT-PCR are allowed to attend school.”
Tejwani feels unlike 2020, when there was a huge scare about Coronavirus, now there are proper processes in place and people know what to expect and what to do when you are diagnosed. “People are getting responsible and taking care to not send their kids if they have cough, cold or any other symptom. Moreover, I think it was high time kids went back to school. Kab tak will kids continue to learn online? It was fine when there was no alternate and up till a certain point, but now is the time to get back to our lives,” he remarks, adding, “This virus won’t go away so we have to learn to live with it. It has now become another flu. If you are infected or have symptoms, get diagnosed, isolated and treat yourself and get back to work.”
The actor credits the vaccine for reducing fatalities and helping people recover sooner. “Earlier people who weren’t vaccinated suffered a lot. The third wave was milder and as many people were vaccinated, it helped so many of us. Now people are understanding that vaccination is important and even going for the third dose. We have to get back to normal and move on. Most countries abroad are urging people to come out and live a normal life. If you feel sick, stay at home and get well,” he says.
On the work front, Tejwani, who recently debuted in a music video, Mera Pyara Hindustan, is glad that it was received well. “It turned out so well and as of now, we have 10 million views. I wanted to do a music video, but was waiting for the right song. I wanted it to mean more and what better than one that has a patriotic vibe. I am glad people loved it and it connected with them,” says the actor.

Hiten Tejwani talks about being replaced on a comedy show without any intimation
Neha Maheshwri (BOMBAY TIMES; July 19, 2018)
Overnight replacements are common in the television industry. However, when a seasoned actor is replaced on a show, it comes as a shocker. And what’s even more shocking is when they are not informed about it. Something similar happened with Hiten Tejwani recently. The actor was all set to foray into comedy for the first time with the show, Namune. However, just a few days before the shoot was to commence, he was replaced by Kunal Kumar without any intimation.
Hiten spoke about it in his signature calm demeanour, “So far, I have replaced actors, but this is the first time I have been replaced without intimation. I have been a part of this industry and such things are quite common. I shot for four days for the pilot of the show. I did a lot of prep for it, as this was also the first time I was venturing into comedy. It’s not an easy genre. It takes effort to get into the skin of the character. I was very excited about the project, but now, what can I say?” he said.
Shedding light on what could possibly be the reason for this change, the actor said, “After the look test was done, I was wondering what happened, as there was no communication from their end. So, when the shooting date came near, I got in touch with someone I knew in the production team and the person was shocked that I wasn’t informed about the development. He broke the news to me that I had been replaced. Actors are often replaced, if they don’t suit a character or fit the bill. However, my problem was that they felt that I didn’t look like a lower middle-class guy, despite trying every trick in the book to make me look like one! Then suddenly, someone else was brought on board for my part overnight, and I wasn’t even informed about it. I’ve been a part of the industry for years and I have seen it all, but I am sure something like this would be difficult for new actors. They would take time to come to terms with what just hit them. It can also dent their confidence, as they would wonder why they were suddenly replaced, without even been given an opportunity to improve their acting."

Latest reality show evictee Hiten Tejwani on returning with dignity and deflecting a fellow inmate’s advances
Natasha Coutinho (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 18, 2017)
TV actor Hiten Tejwani has become the latest inmate to be cast out of the Bigg Boss house. “I’m still disoriented. It will take me a couple of days to get back to my routine as my body-clock is still set to Bigg Boss time. I didn’t expect to be out but it’s happened so I have to accept it. The housemates were given a choice to save either Priyank (Sharma) or me and they picked him. The game has become so dirty that people want to strike off strong contenders. I respected everybody and didn’t indulge in back-biting so I expected them to root for me me but they felt threatened by me so they wanted me out. Priyank is not a threat to them,” Hiten reasons.
While many believe that he didn’t add much masala to the show, the actor is far from disgruntled. “I am happy that I didn’t have to change my personality. My dignity is intact,” he contends, adding that having his wife and kids visit him on the show were among the most memorable moments. He is also all praise for host Salman Khan, “He is the real Bigg Boss.”
Hiten and family will ring in the New Year in Mumbai but are planning a holiday later. “I wouldn’t mind doing Khatron Ke Khiladi next,” Hiten signs off.
