While web shows may have put their female characters on a pedestal, actor Shweta Tripathi says Mirzapur, the movie, will pander to the male-dominated front-row audience

“In school I was that student whom parents and friends used to tell me to work hard and study. And then, right now, I am such a front-bencher,” says Shweta Tripathi Sharma, with a hint of surprise. It’s been a great year for her as she delivered two of the OTT’s most watched shows - Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein and Mirzapur. After Masaan’s success, Sharma took an unusual route to fame by choosing OTT shows over big ticket commercial movies.
“I didn’t take that quintessential path, that a heroine should be like this. I want to tell so many people that do not lose on your purpose and your intent. Because to me, that is the most important thing. Following your dreams is not going to be easy. But at least you're waking up to do what you want to do rather than just doing a job and earning money. A few days ago, I saw Richa and Ali's film, which is Girls Who Be Girls. I feel that there is a change that is happening. I'm so glad that not just me, but people around me, people that I look up to, everybody is trying to bring about a change,” she says.
The success of two big shows have been pivotal. “I don't think a season has been ever announced so soon after. As an actor, now because it's been a few years, I can feel an energy shift. I'm feeling better because I know there is a buzz around us. And I know people want to collaborate with me. We know that Shweta is bankable. She delivers. It does matter what your relevance is. And now because of Mirzapur and Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein coming out this year, and the curiosity that people have and the love that the character has got, that gives me that extra power. I have got two film scripts. And both slice of life movies. I would have never imagined that after Mirzapur and Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein I will get a slice of life. But that is what I love. That people themselves only don't want to typecast me. There is a certain worth in the projects that come to me.”
And Mirzapur has become a feature film which will roll soon. “I'm always happy when suddenly people recognize me but I know there is a certain love that they have for me because of Golu. They love Golu and what makes me really happy is when these pretty girls wearing stockings with makeup on and hair done up they come up to me and they are big fans of that character. They don't look or feel anything like her.”
We tell her that one of the most beautiful things about Mirzapur is that fact, especially in the second season the women of power are front and center. She says the movie might be different.
“See the thing is that somewhere this is the male world. Women are not the side characters here. I know the majority are men and the power is with men. So that will reflect. So the film I think is definitely going to follow the world and writing and language of Mirzapur but I think it's going to be more of a testosterone heavy film. Now in the trailer and the teaser that we've seen we see Compounder and Munna. That means it is going to be a chapter from season one. In season one the women were part of it and in the film they will be part of it. It feels great that we are the first OTT series to be a movie but it's also a responsibility because of the love and respect we've got from the audience. The creators, especially Gurmmeet Singh, are such good human beings. I love him so much. Because they care about even an actor, the writer, even the spot boys. They will only be happy when everyone is doing well. So when you have that intention, the story will thrive and shine.”

Mirzapur director Singh teams up with Fukrey maker Lamba for Paan Parda Zarda, a gangster drama about opium smuggling

There is something about gangster dramas that fascinates Gurmmeet Singh. It led him to helm Mirzapur, a gory tale of gang wars, greed and power. Now, the director has another gangster story up his sleeve, Paan Parda Zarda.
The series sees him team up with Mrighdeep Singh Lamba of Fukrey fame, and Shilpi Dasgupta as they tell the story of opium smuggling in central India. Mona Singh, Tanve Azmi, Rajesh Tailang, Priyanshu Painyuli and Tanya Maniktala star in the crime drama that rolled on September 27.
Singh, who serves as the showrunner and co-director, says that the Jio Studios’ production goes beyond guns and gore to explore family dynamics. “It has elements of love, action and family drama. Developed from an original story created by Shilpi Dasgupta, the interwoven relationships are key to this series,” he says.
Paan Parda Zarda is worlds apart from Lamba’s comedy franchise, Fukrey. The director is eager to try his hand at this genre as he says, “It’s a labour of love that has been created after years of research.” Writer Suparn S Varma adds that creating the show’s “romantic and violent world” was liberating.

With the ongoing phase of cinema offering actors the chance to explore a diverse range of characters, the opportunity to play the same role over and over again may seem unappealing. But, for Mirzapur actor Rasika Dugal, returning to play the role of Beena, the daughter-in-law of a powerful family who uses manipulation to topple patriarchy in the male-dominated world of gangsters, has been a fulfilling experience.
Being able to sink her teeth into the part implies that Dugal was able to pull off her role with more authority. She says, “Our director, Gurmmeet Singh, understands all the characters so well that it is a pleasure to work with him. Because of him, I can explore all the facets of this character, instead of looking at her superficially.”
With her rapport with her co-actors already established, Dugal was able to enjoy the process of enacting the part, this time around.
“It’s interesting for me to see the way in which a scene shapes up in comparison to how it was visualized during the reading session. Since we are in sync with our characters, the initial [apprehension] of working with someone was not prevalent. We know our way with each other. I am particularly excited to see how a scene with Pankaj ji [Tripathi] has turned out. On paper, it didn’t seem much, but while shooting it, it felt truly dark; there was interesting chemistry between us, and these are moments that you look out for as an actor. They cannot be designed or plotted in a vanity van. Such scenes just surprise you.” she says.

The past week has been exactly as Rasika Dugal had hoped. The second season of Delhi Crime has received rave reviews, with director Tanuj Chopra being praised for his deft treatment of the subject, and the cast, for their performances. For Dugal, it was a delight to reunite with Shefali Shah for the police procedural.
The actor, who plays ACP Neeti Singh in the Netflix series, reflects, “It’s interesting to see the relationship between Vartika [Shah’s character] and Neeti, vis-à-vis the one between Shefali and I. Neeti has a lot of respect for Vartika, but has understood that she is human and vulnerable. However, the opposite is true of us [off screen]. The more I work with Shefali, the more I’m in awe of her. With each season, her act has become even more flawless.”
Though Delhi Crime 2 is behind her, another gritty series demands Dugal’s attention. The actor is currently shooting for the third instalment of Mirzapur, which also stars Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal and Shweta Tripathi Sharma, among others.
Slipping into the character of Beena Tripathi comes naturally to her, she says. “In the initial days, I always [wonder] whether I have forgotten any essential [detail] about the character. But we have the same director [Gurmmeet Singh] from the first two seasons. Every time I stray from the character, Gurmmeet brings me back on track. He knows the character better than I do.”
Mirzapur actor Bramha Mishra found dead in Versova flat

Mumbai: Actor Brahmaswaroop Mishra, best known for his role in the OTT show ‘Mirzapur’, was found dead at his home in Versova on Thursday after a heart attack, reports Nitasha Natu.
Mishra, 36, had acted in Bollywood films Super 30, Kesari, Badrinath Ki Dulhania and Dangal. He had been living in a rental apartment at Inlaks Nagar in Versova for the past four years.
Around 12.15pm on Thursday, Versova police was informed by residents of Inlaks Nagar about a foul odour emanating from one of the flats. A police team was sent to the flat but the door was locked from inside. A duplicate key was made and the police team found Mishra dead inside the lavatory.

Mumbai: The body of actor Bramhaswaroop Mishra, who was found dead in his flat in Versova on Thursday afternoon, was found in a semi-decomposed condition which suggests that it might have been a while since he died, police said.
The actor’s body was sent to the Cooper Hospital for a postmortem examination. The Versova police have registered an accidental death report, and are investigating further.
The police have informed the actor’s brother, Sandeep Mishra, who lives in Bhopal, about his death.
Mishra had completed a two-year acting course from the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. He was also associated with several theatre groups.

Film Actor Brahma Mishra, best known for his roles in films such as, Manjhi: The Mountain Man, Kesari, and the web series Mirzapur, has passed away in Mumbai.
On Thursday, the police found his semi-decomposed body from his flat in Versova. The body has been sent for an autopsy at Dr. Cooper Hospital.
According to mid-day sources, Mishra's death took place 2-3 days earlier. Neighbours complained to police on Thursday morning about a foul smell coming from the flat, an official said.
When the Versova police rushed to the spot, the flat’s door was locked from inside. After opening the door, the police found Mishra's body in the toilet. “After performing the panchnama, the body was sent to Cooper Hospital for an autopsy,” said an officer.
According to reports, no injury marks were found on Mishra’s body, and hence it is being speculated that Mishra died of heart attack. “We are not going to take any decision from our side until we see the post-mortem report,” the officer added.
“We have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR). The body was sent for autopsy at Dr. Cooper hospital,” said Senior Inspector Siraj Inamdaar of Versova police station.
Actor Divyenndu took to Instagram and informed everyone about the heartbreaking news.
"RIP Brahma Mishra. Our Lalit is no more. Let's pray for him everyone," he wrote.
Several other celebrities have also expressed their shock and grief after learning about the untimely demise of Bramha Mishra.
"Heartbreaking," actor Shriya Pilgaonkar wrote on Instagram.
"He brought a smile to a million faces. He will be missed. RIP Bramha Mishra," 'Mirzapur' creator Gurmmeet Singh mourned.
Huge set of cave being created at Film City for Phone Bhoot's second schedule

Elaborate set being erected in Film City before Kaif, Ishaan and Siddhant kick off second schedule of Phone Bhoot

It’s ghostbuster time for Katrina Kaif, Ishaan Khatter and Siddhant Chaturvedi again. The trio, who had kicked off Phone Bhoot in Goa last December, are readying for the second schedule of the horror comedy. Sources suggest that the production design team is working hard, building a set at Film City in Goregaon for the upcoming schedule.
“A huge set of a cave is being created at Film City. While a few indoor scenes are on the cards, a major chunk of the proceedings will be filmed at this site. Gurmmeet Singh [director] has charted out a 20-day schedule and procured the combination dates of his three leads. If all goes as planned, Katrina, Ishaan and Siddhant will report to the set tomorrow,” reveals a source.
The horror comedy, which sees the central characters as ghostbusters, was announced last July and immediately piqued the audience’s curiosity, thanks to its interesting casting. Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani serve as producers on the project. mid-day reached out to Excel Entertainment, which remained unavailable for comment.

Mirzapur's Devdutt Dadda Tyagi is 3 feet 5 inches, and still intimidating. He makes you think, "I never want to be caught on the wrong side of this guy." The actor who breathed life into Tyagi, M M Faruqi, is loving it. "People are telling me, 'height gayi gaddhe mein; you really scared us'. I take that as a big compliment; it never happens with me in real life!" Faruqi, known by his screen name Lilliput, is taking a dig at his stature. Living with Achondroplasia, popularly known as drawrfism, has meant that the actor has had to make do with comic roles for much of his career. The last time he played an intimidating role was in 1998 on the television horror show, Woh. It's been a while since then that he has managed to make news. Season 2 of hit Amazon Prime show Mirzapur seems to have placed him in an unlikely spot, hitting the right notes with the audience.
Faruqi agrees that work has been scant. In 2012's, he did Luck Luck ki Baat, and in 2018, he appeared as himself in Kaamyaab. Later, came a small role in the TV show, Vidya. He has waited eight years to land a part that would get him noticed. A press report in 2017, in fact, quoted him saying that he was living off his daughter's earnings because no one was willing to give a chance to the film scripts he had worked on.
"This role, I've been waiting for all my life," he says of the part that the web series makers Gurmmeet Singh and Puneet Krishna, offered him. "They made sure they extracted a superb performance from me. And that viewers have liked Dadda, makes me very happy."
Survival in Bollywood hinges on networking, meeting the right people at social dos. And yet, he says, it's often that people "remember the person". "Someone will meet you one day, and the next day, tell someone else [about you], 'you know, I met Lilliput, and he's just so nice. He should get a role'. And then, finally one day, someone calls you." During this interview, he recalls meeting late actor Rishi Kapoor a few years ago. "He had the habit of spewing abuses while he spoke. He told me, 'why aren't you acting, working.' I listened to him for a while, and then said, 'I can't understand the grammar of the language this industry speaks'. I have never been able to get work easily, because I can't network. It's a misconception that if you are good, you get work. There are just too many people [vying for the same job], and only those who get seen a lot, get work."
Web series and OTT platforms, then, are obviously a godsend for character actors like him. It's the only space they can hope to experiment. "In the movies, everyone is tethered like cattle. Web series seem to have come as some sort of good luck for writers and actors craving freedom," he says.
To play Dadda Tyagi, Bihar's unlikely Bahubali, the soft-spoken actor says he didn't do much prep other than be determined to play the role as well as it was written. In fact, the first time it was offered to him, he turned it down. "I told them it's a role meant for the likes of Naseeruddin Shah, not me! But the makers insisted, and said, if anyone can do it, it was me. And then, suddenly I was Dadda, a man who used his insecurities to push himself up in life."
While the love has been pouring in from fans, Mirzapur 2's success hasn't brought him new offers. The man who knows the importance of patience, says, "Let's wait and see what God has in store."

Given the current scenario, the world could do with a few laughs. It's good news then that several filmmakers are raring to take their comedies on floors. Only a day after Saif Ali Khan and Arjun Kapoor headed to Dalhousie for the shoot of Bhoot Police, director Gurmmeet Singh's horror comedy, Phone Bhoot, is next in line. It is heard that the Katrina Kaif, Ishaan Khatter and Siddhant Chaturvedi starrer is slated to roll by the month-end.
"While Siddhant has been shooting for Shakun Batra's yet-untitled next in Goa, the remaining cast of Phone Bhoot joined him in the beach state for an elaborate reading session last month. After the initial prep, Katrina headed to the UK to meet her family. Happy with the way the readings panned out, Gurmmeet informed his team that he is ready to roll with the project soon," reveals a source. A chunk of the film, which revolves around three ghostbusters, will be shot in Goa followed by a Mumbai schedule.
When mid-day reached out to Singh, he said, "I am thrilled to start the project. For the moment, I am taking baby steps. Things have been [uncertain] because of the pandemic, but we will get clarity soon."

Women in Mirzapur are as tough as men, says director Gurmmeet Singh

In a move that was telling of the patriarchal society it was set in, women had precious little to do as goons, guns and gore took centre-stage in the first season of Mirzapur. The second edition brings a necessary change in that regard — where Rasika Dugal's Beena takes charge of her life, Shweta Tripathi Sharma's Golu trades her books for guns to avenge her sister and boyfriend's deaths. Isha Talwar's Madhuri Yadav too unapologetically harbours political ambitions.
Point out to director Gurmmeet Singh how the female characters, at last, have agency, and he credits creator-writer Puneet Krishna for the development. "Puneet doesn't analyse if he is writing for a male or female character. For him, every character is a hero. Women in Mirzapur are equally tough because they have to surive there. It was not a conscious call to empower the women."
Krishna admits that the female characters didn't enjoy much screen presence in the opening season. "They have more screen time in this outing, but we had not planned it; we went with the flow. They are equally prominent because they [pull the strings] and the dynamics are driven by the story."
It's common for the prime players to be written off, thus adding to the show's plot twists. Singh exclaims, "I am scared that if I begin liking a character, Puneet will kill him in the next episode! We are not scared of killing the important players because we can have fun with those alive."
While the series is criticized for its excessive violence, director Mihir Desai asserts they practise self-censorship. "If a scene doesn't call for violence, we don't show it unnecessarily. This time, the characters have matured after their loss."
Makers Issue Apology
On October 30, author Surender Mohan Pathak told mid-day how he was enraged that the second season of Mirzapur had wrongly depicted his book Dhabba as an erotica (below). On Saturday, the makers issued an apology to Pathak on social media. The apology, signed by Krishna, stated that within three weeks, either the "unrelated voiceover" will be removed or the book cover will be blurred.

Ishaan Khatter on collaborating with Katrina Kaif as he hopes to kick off Phone Bhoot shoot by the year-end

While he waits for A Suitable Boy to drop on Netflix India, Ishaan Khatter has bagged his fifth project — Phone Bhoot, a quirky horror comedy to be helmed by Gurmmeet Singh. "I have explored neither comedy nor horror, so it's a new territory for me," says the actor, who had an enviable albeit unconventional movie debut with Majid Majidi's Beyond the Clouds (2017).
The Excel Entertainment production has him teaming up with Katrina Kaif and Siddhant Chaturvedi. Khatter turns into an endearing fanboy as the conversation steers towards Kaif.
"Katrina is a senior in terms of her work and experience, and I look up to her. I have been waiting for years to work with her. She is the quintessential glamorous diva. The photo-shoot we did together was a riot, and I imagine we will be bringing our different energies to the set when we start shooting." The actor, however, is most excited to collaborate with Singh as he shifts gears from thrillers like Mirzapur and Inside Edge to a comedy.
Despite the uncertain times of Coronavirus, the studio hopes to kick off the shoot later this year. "By the time we start shooting, I hope the situation will have improved. Though we will adhere to the guidelines, as actors, we can't be too caught up with safety and sanitisation because it will then reflect in our work," states Khatter.
Ali Fazal reunites with Mirzapur team for a music video

It's refreshing to see the most menacing gangster of the web world aka Guddu Bhaiyya stepping out of his tough image to turn into a romantic hero for a music video. Ali Fazal is all set to woo his on-screen lady love, Surbhi Jyoti in the upcoming music video, Aaj Bhi. Crooned by Vishal Mishra, who gave the hit numbers of Kabir Singh last year, will be collaborating with the actor for the single. Helmed by Mirzapur creator Gurmmeet Singh, the song will feature on Vryl Originals' YouTube channel.
"It is the first time I am working with Vishal," starts off Fazal and adds that the he was blown away by Mishra's "mesmerising voice". "His voice is soulful and we bonded over our Lucknow connect." The Fukrey actor says that while it was his first time working with Jyoti, he had a blast in the Chandigarh shoot. "Surbhi is super cool and we kept chatting about movies and food. The four days in Chandigarh were such a blast."
The actor says he felt at home as he was reuniting with his other family — the Mirzapur team Singh and Sanjay Kapoor (DoP). "It was like a reunion working with Guru and Sanjay. Considering I spent so much time with Guru last year, we got each other's vibes and cues. This is something that Guru and I have never explored together. In a span of three minutes, we told an entire story. As an actor, it's hard to pull this off. I have never been so excited about a music video. It evokes a feeling that everyone at some point or the other goes through. It's a unique take on unrequited love."

Siddhant Chaturvedi wants to follow up MC Sher with four films next year; discusses a horror comedy and working with Deepika Padukone

Siddhant Chaturvedi, who hit pay dirt as MC Sher in Zoya Akhtar’s Ranveer Singh-fronted Gully Boy, says success didn’t happen overnight for him. “It happened after lots of auditions and rejections,” he smiles. Since the film, the actor has signed for as many as four films, out of which Shakun Batra’s next directorial was announced recently. The yet-untitled project, also featuring Deepika Padukone and Ananya Panday, goes on the floors in March. “It’s Shakun’s take on love and life in the form of a thrilling romantic experience,” Siddhant reveals.
Ask him about sharing screen space with Deepika for the first time and he replies, “I am a huge fan of her. She is beautiful, talented and an amazing person, so I am going to learn a lot from her. On screen, it will be whatever the script demands. I am expecting something quite intense.” While there will be no workshops for the cast before the film goes on the floors, Siddhant has started prepping for his character in the urban relationship drama. But, the actor informs, there may be script-reading sessions. “I screened a lot of offers after Gully Boy because I was waiting for a script like this. I heard it and instantly wanted to sign on.”
Before moving on to the Karan Johar production, Siddhant has completed almost half of his next film, which is a sequel to the 2005 comedy, Bunty Aur Babli. He is hopeful that like MC Sher, his con-man Bunty, too, will find favour with the audience. “I am lucky enough to get MC Sher in my very first film. Now, I am on my way to make all my characters iconic,” Siddhant exclaims. The comic caper sees him team up with Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukerji. “They are the Hum Tum jodi and they look fab together. I have to keep the fanboy under control and learn a lot from them, as they are such amazing actors,” he exults.
Buzz is, there’s also a horror comedy in the pipeline for him, co-starring Katrina Kaif and Ishaan Khatter, which will be directed by Gurmmeet Singh. “It’s a horror comedy, yes. I am waiting for the producers to announce the project. I am also doing an action film next year,” he shares.
Point out that he will be shooting for four films next year and he quips, “I am inspired by Akshay (Kumar) sir. It’s not easy as I am living with four characters in my head right now.” He concedes that 2020 is going to be a tough year but is confident that he will pull it off. “More than the hard-work, I need to be mentally strong. I don’t want to look and behave the same in every film.”

Anil D. Ambani owned Reliance Entertainment’s Big Synergy has teamed up with three exciting filmmakers to create a mega-entertaining web series, Paan Parda Zarda.
Walky Talkies is the joint venture of three successful filmmakers—Mrighdeep Lamba (Fukrey, Fukrey Returns), Gurmmeet Singh (Mirzapur, Inside Edge) and Shilpi Dasgupta (untitled under-production film with Sonakshi Sinha and Badshah).
After garnering accolades for their films and web series, the trio has come together, with Reliance Entertainment’s Big Synergy, to create Paan Parda Zarda—an intoxicating love story set amidst the opium trade barons of Central India, from the arid landscapes of the Maalwa plateau to the princely kingdom of Bhopal.
Reveals Shilpi Dasgupta, “The series brims with extraordinary, real characters—intense pride, devious deceit, violent retribution, but above all, majestic love. Paan Parda Zarda is a sensory overload that will leave audiences numb in its aftermath, much like a hit of the opiate that has been deployed to win wars and change fortunes in Asia for centuries. Shweta Tripathi shoots for a masturbation scene in Mirzapur

While Kiara Advani's now-famous vibrator sequence in Lust Stories had elicited more than a few laughs, Swara Bhasker had earned the wrath of trolls for filming a masturbation scene in Veere Di Wedding.
In a move that shows that Indian entertainment is no longer shying away from depicting women's sexual desires, Shweta Tripathi has shot a masturbation scene in the upcoming web series, Mirzapur. The said sequence marks her opening scene in the action thriller, which also features Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal and Vikrant Massey.
A source from the creative team reveals, "The scene has Shweta reading a book in the library. In reality, beneath her textbook is an adult magazine. As she gets turned on by the material, you can hear the voice of Savita Bhabhi play in the background. It is a sensual scene; Shweta went completely by the vision of the director [Gurmmeet Singh] and had no apprehension whatsoever as an artiste."
The source adds that the makers have decided to keep the scene under wraps as they fear it may court controversy.
