Fenil's Bollywood Talk # 746

WILL GOODBYE BRING CHEER FOR AMITABH BACHCHAN IN HIS 80TH BIRTHDAY WEEK?

Many small and mid-sized films will try their luck at the box office in the next two weeks before the festival of Diwali. Tomorrow will see the release of 4-5 films and the biggest among them is Goodbye.

It stars Amitabh Bachchan in the lead and marks the debut of Rashmika Mandanna in Bollywood. Neena Gupta, Sunil Grover, Pavail Gulati, Elli AvrRam and Ashish Vidyarthi also star in this film which is directed by Vikas Bahl. It is about a dysfunctional family that comes together after the death of a family member.

The trailer has caught attention and seems like a funny and moving film. Though Rashmika Mandanna has extensively promoted it, the awareness is limited. The makers have decided to sell the tickets on release day for just Rs. 150. Moreover, it's Amitabh Bachchan's 80th birthday on October 11. Hence, Goodbye will be at an advantage since viewers will be insisted on watching Big B's film on his big day. The word of mouth needs to be positive for the film to have that advantage. The opening should be around Rs 1-1.25 crores.

The other major release of the week is GodFather. It's a Telugu film dubbed in Hindi starring Chiranjeevi and Nayanthara. Salman Khan has a cameo and it has given the Hindi version an edge. It was released yesterday on October 5 on the Dussehra holiday. In Hindi, it opened at Rs. 2 crores and the word of mouth is mixed. Its target should be to cross the collections of Rocketry: The Nambi Effect and Karthikeya 2 which collected Rs. 22 crores and Rs. 24 crores respectively. Of course, it looks dicey right now but anything can happen with dubbed films.

Then, Karan Razdan's Hindutva will release tomorrow. There's no star cast and hence, there’s no awareness despite such a controversial title. And lastly, Chakki will hit cinemas tomorrow as well. It stars Rahul Bhat and is presented by Umesh Shukla of OMG Oh My God fame. Sadly, since awareness is zero, it'll sink without a trace.

And that’s not all. Maja Ma was released today on Amazon Prime Video. It stars Madhuri Dixit in the lead along with Gajraj Rao, Ritwik Bhowmik and Barkha Singh. The film’s bold theme has caught attention. Though the response is mixed, it’ll find an audience due to the theme and Madhuri’s presence.

Salman Khan to shoot for Godfather song and next schedule of Bhaijaan at the same location

Two films come together for Salman Khan

Khan to shoot Godfather song in Vile Parle studio, while Bhaijaan team lines up next leg at the same location

It can’t be easy to shoot films back-to-back, moving from one story’s universe to another. But sometimes, things have a way of working out, as Salman Khan recently discovered. The actor is scheduled to shoot his special number for Chiranjeevi’s ambitious project, Godfather, in the last week of July. Sources say that the makers are erecting an elaborate set at the Golden Tobacco factory in Vile Parle for the track. To make matters easier for their leading man, the team of Farhad Samji’s directorial venture, tentatively titled Bhaijaan, has also lined up the next schedule at the same venue.

A source reveals, “The production design team of Godfather has begun building the set for the song, which will see Salman shake a leg with the film’s leading lady Nayanthara. Director Mohan Raja will shoot the number on July 27 and 28. Soon after Salman wraps it up, he will kick off the next schedule of Bhaijaan on a different floor at the same location.”

The drama, which also features Venkatesh and Pooja Hegde, was earlier titled Kabhi Eid Kabhi Diwali.

I am happy that Salman Khan is shooting on the set of Acharya-Suresh Selvarajan

As Chiranjeevi offers his Acharya set free of cost to Salman to shoot Bhaijaan, the production designer on the larger-than-life set

In May, mid-day had reported that Salman Khan would soon commence a month-long schedule of Kabhi Eid Kabhi Diwali (KEKD) at Kokapet where a massive set of a village was erected (Kabhi Mumbai, kabhi Telangana, May 28). Now, we have learnt that the set is a part of the fictional temple town of Dharmasthali, which had been specially created for Chiranjeevi-Ram Charan’s April release, Acharya. Chiranjeevi and Khan have long been friends, with the latter even making a cameo in the south superstar’s next, Godfather. Sources say as a mark of appreciation, Chiranjeevi has allowed Khan to shoot KEKD at the elaborate set, free of cost.

Designed by production designer Suresh Selvarajan before the first lockdown began, the set is said to cost over Rs 20 crore and is surrounded by a river, scenic hills, a temple and a tribal village. More than 1,000 construction workers were reportedly involved in building the property. Considering the set-up remained unaffected over the past two-and-a-half years of the pandemic, Chiranjeevi and his family decided against dismantling it even after the shoot of Acharya was wrapped up. Instead, they decided to rent it out for movies.

A source says, “Salman is close to Chiranjeevi and his family. When the south superstar approached him for the cameo, Salman was adamant about not taking his fee. So, Chiranjeevi returned the favour by throwing open his Dharmasthali-themed set for Salman’s home production. KEKD director Farhad Samji had done a recce earlier and felt the premises suited their demands. The team has made a few modifications to lend it a village ambience.”

Selvarajan, who previously handled the production design for Om Shanti Om (2007) and Agneepath (2012), says that the preliminary work of building set model and making blueprints took four months, followed by another three months of construction. “It took us 20 acres and more than Rs 20 crore to make the set on Chiranjeevi sir’s land in Kokapet. I come from the temple town of Chidambaran, so [it influenced my design] of the fictional town. I am happy that Salman is shooting on the same set now. The temple town has a gurukul, gaushala, streets and junctions. [It is built in such a way that] the team can make whatever alterations they want to.”

Three years ago, I shared Bajrangi Bhaijaan's sequel idea with Salman Khan-K V Vijayendra Prasad

KV Vijayendra Prasad: I shared sequel idea with Salman Khan three years ago

Recounting how Khan had not responded to his story pitch in 2018, Bajrangi Bhaijaan writer says sequel announcement came as a pleasant surprise
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; January 14, 2022)

Salman Khan took his fans by surprise during a promotional event for RRR last month, when he announced that a sequel to Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015) is in the works. As it turns out, the sentiment was not restricted to the superstar’s admirers alone. The news about Pawan Putra Bhaijaan — as Khan has christened the sequel — came as a bolt from the blue for K V Vijayendra Prasad, the veteran writer who penned the much-loved 2015 hit. “Salman’s announcement came as a total surprise,” laughs Prasad, well aware of Khan’s spontaneous nature.

Happy as he is that the actor has put the sequel on the fast-track, the noted writer reveals that talks of a second instalment had, in fact, begun in late 2018. “Three years ago, I shared a sequel idea with Salman bhai. At the time, I didn’t get a yes or no from him. I didn’t know whether he had liked the story as he did not say anything, nor did he respond later. That is why I had never spoken about Pawan Putra Bhaijaan.” Though a bit late, Khan gave his nod to the project in a grand fashion — on the stage and in the presence of the RRR cast.

Bajrangi Bhaijaan, which also starred Kareena Kapoor Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Harshaali Malhotra, was helmed by Kabir Khan. While the director is self-admittedly averse to the idea of creating sequels, the buzz is that he will resume his place behind the camera for the upcoming instalment. “I don’t know who is directing the sequel. It is up to Salman bhai and him. While it is a natural assumption on my part to think Kabir will, and I would want him to as he did a wonderful job in Bajrangi Bhaijaan, I have no role in the decision-making process,” says the writer.

mid-day has learnt that the actor intends to meet Prasad next month, to develop the script further. A trade source reveals, “After Salman’s announcement, a mutual friend called Prasad sir to inform him that the actor will be Hyderabad-bound in February to shoot a cameo and dance sequence for Chiranjeevi’s Godfather. He is likely to meet Prasad then.”
