BOMBAY TIMES (July 2, 2022)
TV show Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah has got a new Nattu Kaka in theatre veteran Kiran Bhatt. Earlier, the character was essayed by another veteran actor Ghanshyam Nayak, who died of cancer on October 3, 2021.
Interestingly, in real life, Bhatt and Nayak had a long friendship, dating back to their initial years in the theatre industry. Commenting on the same, Bhatt said, “It’s almost like the old Nattu Kaka is bringing in the new Nattu Kaka, and I am glad to be doing the role of my dear friend Ghanshyam. It is a very emotional role for me, and I hope to do justice to the role Ghanshyam excelled in ever since the beginning.”
Asit Kumarr Modi, the producer of the show, while welcoming the new Nattu Kaka into the family, said, “The love that we have been showered with ever since we began in 2008 is immense. And we hope that the audience embraces Nattu Kaka as he is all set to return to Jethalal’s newly inaugurated store.”

Ghanshyam Nayak (77), best known as Natu Kaka from Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, passed away on Sunday after a prolonged battle with cancer. The team members of Taarak Mehta... have been very upset after hearing the news. We spoke to Tanmay Vekaraia, who plays Natu Kaka’s nephew Bagha on the show and shared maximum screen time with the veteran actor. Tanmay, who joined the show in 2010, said, “Ghanshyam bhai has seen me working as a child actor. I was a kid when he used to work in plays.”
Tanmay says, “When I got the opportunity to work with him in Taarak..., I was very happy; it revived our old association. We used to share the same make-up room, have lunch and snacks together and travel to work and back home together every day. He was very dear to me and a special person in my life. For two hours after I heard the news of his demise, I was just recalling the entire series of meetings, good moments and the time I shared working with him since my childhood.”
Talking about his dear Natukaka, he added, “He was a very easy-going and simple individual. A talented actor, I remember his struggles. Though he worked in several plays, films and TV shows, he got his much-deserved fame and recognition only after he crossed 60 years of age. Life had been tough for him and I respect the way he lived his life. I knew him for more than two decades and I loved the innocence with which he delivered his dialogues. He will continue to live in my memories forever.”
Producer Asit Kumarr Modi said, “Ghanshyam bhai was not only connected with me because of Taarak..., I have known him for more than two decades because he has acted in many of my TV shows, earlier, too. Unfortunately, the past one year was difficult for me to get him back on the sets because of his illness but I invited him to Daman when we moved there. He shot for an episode and was happy spending time with the entire unit. Taarak... has lost a very important and talented actor and I would say Gujarati theatre and television values his contribution. He would always say he wanted to work till the last day of his life.”
Incidentally, in an interview to BT a few months ago, while talking about his love for his craft, Natukaka had said that he wanted to work till the last day of his life.

THE TIMES OF INDIA (October 4, 2021)
Mumbai: Veteran actor Ghanashyam Nayak, best known for his work as ‘Nattu Kaka’ in the popular sitcom ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’, passed away on Sunday after a long battle with cancer, producer Asit Kumarr Modi said.
The actor, who was in his late 70s, had been diagnosed with cancer earlier this year.
Modi, creator of ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’, said the actor’s health deteriorated in the past few days.

MID-DAY (October 3, 2021)
Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah actor Ghanshyam Nayak, who plays Nattu kaka, breathed his last today evening. He was 76 and was battling with cancer since December. The last rites will be performed tomorrow morning at the electric crematorium at Kandivali West.
Nayak had recently resumed shooting for the comic caper after undergoing chemotherapy for treatment of cancer. He was back on the set after four months and was keen to work as long as he can. “Being on the set gives me joy,” he had recently said to Hitlist.
In December 2020, it was reported that Ghanshyam Nayak was unwell. The senior actor was having severe uneasiness in the glands of his neck and had undergone surgery for the same.
Nayak started as a child artiste in 1960 and went on to have a crowded career in Gujarati and Hindi films and on the Gujarati stage. He even lent his voice as a playback singer, teaming up with Asha Bhosle and Mahendra Kapoor.
He'll however be remembered most fondly for playing Natwarlal Prabhashankar Undhaiwala aka Nattu Kaka, who handles the accounts section of the electricals store run by the serial's principal character, Jethalal Gada, essayed by Dilip Joshi. Whenever Jethalal assigns Nattu Kaka some work he doesn't want to do, he pretends to not have heard and shouts, "Heh, 'mujhe kuch kaha'? (Did you say something to me?)"
The show has been running successfully for over 10 years and has seen several replacements of actors playing pivotal roles for varied reasons. The most favourite character Daya Ben, played by Disha Vakani, was sorely missed. Disha had left the show on maternity break but didn't return even after two years. During an episode shot during Navratri, she made a brief appearance on the show albeit through a video call between her and Jethalal (Dilip Joshi). With Ghanshyam Nayak's demise, the show has lost yet another beloved artist.
Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah is one of the most popular sitcoms which airs every Monday to Friday at 8:30 pm on SAB TV.
As TV shoots relocate to other cities, senior actors stay back in Mumbai

60+ actors will be back on the sets only when shoots resume in the city
Tanvi Trivedi (BOMBAY TIMES; April 28, 2021)
Last year, even after shoots were allowed to resume, the government guidelines had barred senior actors above 65 years from shooting due to Coronavirus. Later, when things got better, the dadidadas and nana-nanis joined the shows. However, now with the surge in cases and the recent stalling of shoots in Maharashtra, after which TV shows have shifted base to other cities, senior actors will again go missing from daily soaps.
Production houses feel it’s safer not to have them travel to different locations in the current scenario. Hence, storylines are being tweaked to justify their absence for now. The actors are naturally unhappy, but they understand that it is in their interest.
‘MISS BEING ON THE SHOW, HOPE THINGS GET BETTER SOON’
Senior Wagles, Aanjjan Srivastav and Bharti Achrekar from Wagle Ki Duniya - Nayi Peedhi Naye Kissey, are not travelling to Silvassa, where the shooting is currently taking place. Srivastava says, “I am eager to get back on the sets, but what can we do? Many crew members had tested positive earlier, and though they have tested negative now, I feel it is better to wait till the situation improves.” Ghanshyam Nayak, aka Natukaka of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, says, “I miss being on the show, and I hope that they start my track as soon as things improve. But the situation is scary, and I can understand why they are delaying my entry.”
Some actors themselves have chosen to stay away. Like theatre and TV actor Arvind Vaidya, who’s a part of Anupamaa, has informed the production house that he will not shoot for the show till the COVID situation improves and the production house has also supported his decision. He says, “Many people from the team tested positive a few weeks ago. Since I had tested negative, I continued shooting for a while. I have to look after my health, so I informed the production house that I won’t be able to shoot. Sometime later, after the state government imposed restrictions, the shoot was shifted to Silvassa. I am a senior actor and if I want to continue living a healthy life, it is important that I don’t travel to another location or shoot in the current situation. I am happy that the production supported my decision.”
Anupam Shyam, who plays an important role in Mann Ki Awaaz — Pratigya 2, has also refrained from travelling to Silvassa. He says, “I have health issues and everyone is aware of it. I have to undergo dialysis and so it’s not possible for me to relocate to another city. I will resume when they come back here.”
Himani Shivpuri, who is currently seen in Happu Ki Ultan Paltan, feels that it’s best to be patient in the current situation. Shivpuri, who had tested positive a few months ago, says, “It is scary to step out and relocate to a different city right now. Last year, I got COVID-19 because I continued shooting and did not want to hamper work, but this year, I will have to wait and see how things go.” Some of the senior actors, who took their first dose of vaccination, are now waiting to take the second.
Swati Chitnis, who plays Kartik’s grandmother in Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, says, “I am waiting for my second jab and if I travel outside, how will I take it? I don’t want to delay the vaccination process. I am happy that the production has supported me in this decision. I tested positive last year and I want to follow all safety protocols because of my age.”
PRODUCER’S SPEAK
Moving to a new place can be very inconvenient for the senior actors, makers say. Producer J D Majethia says, “I don’t think it is safe for them to travel outside Mumbai during the pandemic. Also, it may not be very comfortable there like it is on the set, where we shoot with an airconditioner. So, during summer, it is avoidable. Secondly, if the shoot is at a resort, it requires a lot of walking around. The food, too, may not be right for senior citizens. We will wait to see how things pan out after a week or two.”
Some people are insensitive towards senior actors, says Natukaka of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah

Ghanshyam Nayak aka Natukaka of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah (TMKOC) resumed shooting for the show on December 10 after recovering from a serious illness. However, after he shot for one episode, many people trolled him for looking weak and remarked that he was trying to hide his illness. Nayak has now responded to all the negativity in an exclusive chat with BT.
He said, “Everybody gets old one day, and people do suffer from illness. I am totally cancer-free now, and my body has responded to the doctor’s treatment. I also shot for TMKOC on December 10 and will continue to be a part of the show. This is all because of God’s blessings and the support of my producer Asit Kumarr Modi and my family.”
Responding to how people had trolled him for looking weak, he said, “Some people are insensitive towards senior actors. I want to urge people not to spread such negativity. If I was not looking the part, my producer would not have cast me. I read somewhere that people also commented on my dressing sense. Those who don’t have any work spread such negativity. I am not affected by it, because I am happy that even at my age, I am working and would like to continue going to the sets as long as my body permits. Just like there are negative people, there are those who have constantly supported me in my journey, and I will be able to do more work and entertain audiences with the humour and laughter along with Jethalal (Dilip Joshi) in the show.”
Nayak added, “My character has found a connect with audiences since 2008 when I joined the show. It is a privilege to essay the role of Natukaka.”

Tanvi Trivedi (BOMBAY TIMES; September 6, 2020)
Senior actor Ghanshyam Nayak aka Nattu Kaka of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, has been keeping unwell and will not be seen on the show for some time. Nayak did not resume shooting for the show after the Coronavirus lockdown due to the guidelines issued by Maharashtra Government barring actors above 65 years of age from visiting sets. After the Bombay High Court quashed the guidelines issued by the Maharashtra Government, Nayak was hoping to get back to work. But, that will have to wait for a while now. The actor recently developed a lump in his neck and will undergo surgery for it tomorrow.
A source close to the production house informed us, “A few days ago, Ghanshyam sir was detected with a lump in his neck, and the doctor advised surgery.”
Nayak has been associated with the show for over a decade, and hopes to return to the shoot soon. The source added, “The production house has extended their support to the senior actor, but it will be some time before he returns to the show.”
Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah turns 10: Actors say no show tackles social issues the way we do

As Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah turns 10, five of its most loved characters meet mid-day for a nostalgic look back
Letty Mariam Abraham (MID-DAY; July 31, 2018)
As we set foot in Film City, it's easy to recognise the residential complex, with its bright yellow and blue hues. After all, almost each one of us has been witness to the laughter and learnings, the friendships and fights that have unfolded in Gokuldham Society over the past decade. The set is bathed in lights to commemorate the special occasion. As Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah celebrates its 10th anniversary, we catch up with Dilip Joshi, Mandar Chandwadkar, Shyam Pathak, Tanmay Vekaria and Ghanshyam Nayak for a chat.
Vividly remembering his first day of shoot, Joshi, who plays protagonist Jethaalal Gada, says he had little idea the show would become historic. "My first shot had my character being kidnapped by some comic goons. It has been a smooth sail since then."
Vekaria recollects how he would do bit roles on the show, before the writers etched out the part of Bagha for him. "I've done several roles — from a cop to a taxi driver to a school teacher [before playing Bagha]," he says.
Chandwadkar aka Bhide thinks it is the breezy equation shared by co-stars that helps the show deliver a laugh a minute. Stating that they sometimes incorporate their off-screen antics into the show, he says, "Amit [Bhatt] is hilarious, which is quite at odds with his character [Champakklal]. If someone were to record his antics, it would make for amazing viral content." Nayak, who plays Nattu Kaka, points out that he often ends up being the butt of their jokes. "But I don't mind," he says good-naturedly.
From the affable Dayaben to the eternal bachelor Popatlal Pandey, the distinct characters - each with their quirks - are so deeply entrenched into the public consciousness that it is difficult to imagine anyone else play them. However, Chandwadkar says he would love to step into Tanuj Mahashabde [Iyer]'s shoes. "Bhide is perfect. But from an actor's point of view, I would say Iyer's role has an interesting graph."
In an industry where makers have to resort to generation leaps to keep the audience engaged, the situational comedy has found a loyal fan base without resorting to antics.
Vekaria feels the social commentary on the struggles of the middle-class society resonates with viewers. "Taarak Mehta has discussed so many topics, including education, health policies, old age homes, and so on. No other show does that."
Nayak recalls how a fan, who was battling depression, had the show to thank for his change in attitude. "I know of a viewer who was contemplating suicide. But an episode made him see things in new light."
Joshi credits the team of writers for the show's long-standing success. "Our USP is that we churn out relatable content day in and day out, and still bring on the laughs. Comedy is a difficult genre. When we do our reading, if a particular joke feels forced, we don't let it go. We all brainstorm and improvise on it."
But he is quick to add that the team should now consider following the seasonal format that is popular in the West. "That way, writers will get some relief and the creative output will be better."
Over the years, the sitcom has seen many celebrities - from Shah Rukh Khan to Salman Khan, to Hrithik Roshan - make special appearances. "But the thrill of sharing screen space with [Amitabh] Bachchan sir was beyond words," says Nayak.
Admitting to being a fan of Bachchan, Joshi adds, "When I'd watch him on screen, I didn't imagine I'd share screen space with him someday. This show gave me that opportunity."
Bachchan's compliment to Vekaria during the shoot, is one he holds dear. "The scene required me to mouth Bachchan sir's dialogue, 'I can talk English, walk English'. After we canned the shot, he said, 'Bhai, tum meri jagah aa jao, main tumhari jagah aata hoon'. It was a mind-blowing moment."
One last question:
Your favourite section in Gokuldham Society?
Dilip Joshi: It has to be Jethaalal's balcony. It gives you a complete view of the society.
One character you would like to swap your role with?
Shyam Pathak: I'd love to play Champakklal [Jethaalal's father played by Amit Bhatt].
Your favourite couple from the show?
Ghanshyam Nayak: Bhide and Madhavi [played by Mandar Chandwadkar and Sonalika Joshi]. In fact, I often tell Madhavi, 'You're so beautiful. You look good in anything you wear. Kudrat ne tumhe bahut fursat se banaya hai.'

Tanmay Vekaria aka Bagha

Mandar Chandwakar who plays the role of Atmaram Tukaram Bhide

Shayam Pathak aka Popatlal Pandey
