Karan Tacker has steadily built a presence in the OTT space. His journey began with Special Ops, followed by Khakee: The Bihar Chapter, and most recently Bhay: The Gaurav Tiwari Mystery.
Talking about what drew him to Bhay, Tacker says, “It is Gaurav Tiwari’s story, all the way. He came to Mumbai to become an actor but couldn’t crack it because he couldn’t do ‘ji huzoori’ and eventually became a trained pilot in the US. After a paranormal incident, he studied metaphysics, returned to India, practised it, and died a mysterious death at 32, within eight years.”
Ask him how he navigated the ‘ji huzoori’ norm often associated with showbiz, and he replies, “I have no complaints about my career. Every industry has its own challenges, and I am happy to embrace the challenges of the industry I am part of.”
Reflecting on his career journey, he says the most difficult part has been navigating the industry’s unpredictable phases.
“The first season of Special Ops, which was meant to be my big entry into the OTT space, released on the day India went into lockdown. As an actor, you expect momentum after a successful release, but instead, I was at home for nearly two years and lost crucial time in my career. When Khakee released, the industry was going through a slowdown, and there was barely any work. Dealing with these circumstances has been my biggest challenge.”
He adds, “I try to choose projects that excite and challenge me as an actor, but long gaps disrupt momentum. Since I don’t come from any kind of backing, phases like these make it even harder to stay visible and understand what works at a given point.”

Paranormal investigator Gaurav Tiwari, who died recently under mysterious circumstances, now the subject of a horror film
Roshmila Bhattacharya (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 13, 2016)
On July 7, Gaurav Tiwari, CEO and founder of the Indian Paranormal Society, collapsed at around 11 am in the bathroom of his Delhi flat. Hearing the thud, his father and wife rushed across and found him lying unconscious on the floor. They resuscitated him and rushed him to hospital but he did not survive. According to the postmortem report, there was a black line around the neck and cause of death is said to be asphyxia.
Police suspect the 32-year-old commercial pilot-turned-certified paranormal investigator committed suicide. There are reports of marital discord. The couple just got married in January. His father, Uday Tiwari, however insists that Gaurav told his wife a month ago that a negative force was pulling him.
"My daughter-in-law ignored it thinking he was depressed due to work overload and did not tell us about it. We don't believe in ghosts etc, but his death has left us shocked and puzzled," Tiwari was quoted as saying.
Gaurav had started studying the paranormal after shifting to an earlier house which was believed to be 'haunted'. Since then he had visited over 6,000 'haunted' locations and investigated innumerable 'UFO' abductions and 'alien' creatures. He was part of shows like Haunted Weekends with Sunny Leone and MTV's Girl's Night Out with VJ Rannvijay and has Bhoot Aaya and Fear Files to his credit.
Meanwhile, Vikram Khakhar who had produced Randeep Hooda's Main Aur Charles and now the Hindi remake of the 2013 horror flick, Oculus, with Huma Qureshi, Saqib Saleem and Lisa Ray, for which he has tied up with the Pentacle Paranormal Research Society, has decided to incorporate Gaurav's case in his next feature film with the working title Hunt—XXX Case Files.
Vikram who plans to produce horror franchises based on real life paranormal investigations, met Gaurav in 2014. "He didn't seem suicidal, he was a man of courage. In the course of our research, we've discovered that sometimes when on a 'cleaning' trip, an entity can get attached to an investigator. Gaurav had been to some haunted places," he points out, rationalising the 'negative force'.
His next film which is looking at a January 13, 2017, unveiling revolves around a trio of paranormal investigators and is based on real case files. "Gaurav is now also a case and they will investigate his death. I'm sitting with my writers trying to incorporate the track into the storyline," says Vikram.
A portion of the proceeds from the film will be donated towards free workshops across the country to raise awareness about the paranormal.
