Few actors have consistently embodied Mahatma Gandhi as Pratik Gandhi has, across both stage and screen. The 45-year-old has portrayed the ‘Father of the Nation’ for years on stage and even has a web series coming up, titled Gandhi, in which he plays the role. And to add to the coincidence, he is also performing a stage play today on Gandhi Jayanti, where he plays him yet again.
The actor believes it was destined: “Me playing Gandhi was written the day I was born in a Gandhi family. It has been an extremely important, poignant, and rewarding experience in itself.”
He says, “Gandhi is more relevant in these times than he was ever before for the whole world. We need over a thousand ‘Gandhis’ in this world today, considering everything that we see. And what a coincidence it is that this year, Gandhi Jayanti is on the day of Dussehra. There are so many ravanas that we need to burn and kill within ourselves with the Gandhian approach.”
Ask if Pratik himself imbibed any qualities from Mahatma Gandhi’s life, and he is quick to respond: simplicity and self-belief. “Achieving simplicity in today’s complex and hyperdigital world, is a virtue and a privilege to a lot of people. Gandhi ji also said that true strength does not come from physical power, it comes from indomitable will. After performing the character for a long time, I actually understand where it comes from,” he shares.

As the cast of Lage Raho Munna Bhai — Sanjay Dutt, Vidya Balan, Arshad Warsi, Boman Irani and Dilip Prabhavalkar — is reuniting to bring out a special video on Gandhigiri, which will be out on social media on Gandhi Jayanti, we have learnt that YouTube sensations Bhuvan Bam of BB Ki Vines and Prajakta Koli aka Mostly Sane have joined them.
The cast members will read out their scenes, relive memories of filming, talk about the significance of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary, and the importance of continuing the theme of Gandhigiri and non-violence. Bhuvan, meanwhile, will read out the scenes of Jimmy Sheirgill’s character Victor, while Prajakta will play the girl about to wed.
A source says that the content creators were roped in to connect with the youth and spread the message of Gandhiji among them. Says Bhuvan, “Being part of this project is beyond overwhelming. I was in school when this movie was released. Never did I think that years later I’ll get to be a part of it.” Prajakta adds, “When I saw Lage Raho Munna Bhai, I was 15 years old. One of my favourite memories with the franchise is that my nanu (grandfather) and I used to watch both the movies back-to-back during summer vacations. It’s a movement, let it happen.”

Sanjay Dutt, Vidya Balan, Arshad Warsi, Boman Irani and Dilip Prabhavalkar recently shot for a video that will have them discussing the genesis of Gandhigiri in the film Lage Raho Munna Bhai
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; September 20, 2019)
It may have been over a decade to the release of Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006), but the concept of Gandhigiri continues to dominate public sentiment. So when the movie's producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra (VVC) decided to create a special segment for Gandhi Jayanti, the team decided to turn to the cast of the comedy. Sanjay Dutt, Vidya Balan, Arshad Warsi, Boman Irani and Dilip Prabhavalkar recently shot for a video that will have them discussing the genesis of Gandhigiri in the film, and its importance in today's times.
A source says, "VVC expressed his interest in getting together the Munna Bhai actors for a special chat. When the actors heard of the idea, they were more than happy to come together and reminisce about the movie. They recently shot for the impromptu chat at a suburban studio in Mumbai. During the chat, the actors discussed how Lage Raho Munna Bhai succeeded beyond their wildest imagination and how the film continues to be remembered for its central theme of Gandhigiri and non-violence. The video will be uploaded by the actors as well as the broadcasting company on their respective social media handles on October 2."
