Salman Khan begins specialised fitness training for Apoorva Lakhia's war drama

Salman Khan kicks off specialized fitness regimen for his next on India-China 2020 Galwan Valley clash; to focus on altitude training before filming in Ladakh
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; June 25, 2025)

Portraying a jawan on screen entails intense preparation. Salman Khan is finding that out, having dived into the prep for his next with director Apoorva Lakhia. In the yet-untitled war drama, Khan steps into the shoes of late Colonel Bikumalla Santosh Babu, the commanding officer of the 16 Bihar Regiment, who was killed during the India-China Galwan Valley clash in June 2020. mid-day has learnt that the superstar kicked off his physical training from early June, focusing on two areas — general fitness, and high altitude acclimatization. And who is training him? Well, Khan himself.

That’s not surprising considering the superstar has been a fitness enthusiast for decades. A source reveals,

“Salman has refurbished his two gyms — a sprawling one at his Khandala farmhouse, and a smaller one at his Bandra apartment — to suit the current requirements. He trains for four hours daily and is undergoing circuit training focusing on different muscle groups. The exercises are designed to build strength, endurance, and cardiovascular improvement, the latter being important for high-altitude travellers.”

Lakhia has apparently slotted a look test for early July, and the first schedule for August. In the window between the two, the leading man will begin altitude training as a chunk of the film will be shot in Ladakh.

The source adds, “The training includes periodically exposing the body to higher altitudes, thus giving it time to adjust to the lower oxygen level. Oxygen saturation level can be achieved at home through altitude simulation tents, chambers, or hypoxic masks. Salman may join an altitude training studio because at 59, he needs to be fighting fit to shoot combat sequences in Ladakh.”

Salman Khan to star as Colonel Bikumalla Santosh Babu in Galwan Valley film

Salman Khan to star as Colonel Bikumalla Santosh Babu in gritty Galwan Valley Military saga

Khan is set to headline a military saga on the valiant battle of Galwan, portraying Colonel Bikumalla Santosh Babu
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; May 19, 2025)

It takes immense courage to lay down one’s life for the country — and extreme caution to retell the story of a war hero. Salman Khan, who had been scouting for stories to take up after AR Murugadoss’s Sikandar, has finally locked in a script that resonated with him. Set to be directed by Apoorva Lakhia, Khan’s next film is based on a chapter about Colonel Bikumalla Santosh Babu from the book India’s Most Fearless 3 (2022), authored by Shiv Aroor and Rahul Singh. The writers — currently covering the recent India–Pakistan conflict, Operation Sindoor, and the subsequent ceasefire — are recognized experts in defence, military, and security reportage.

Colonel Babu, who led the 16 Bihar Regiment during the 2020 Galwan clash, was martyred while confronting Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley region of Ladakh on June 14, 2020. He was among the Indian soldiers to have been killed in action against the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA). In 2021, he was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, India’s second-highest wartime gallantry honour.

“Colonel Babu’s character is heroic. He had proved his mettle in several counter-insurgency and infiltration operations. The director has acquired the rights to the first chapter called I Had Never Seen Such Fierce Fighting — The Galwan clash of June 2020. It is a first-hand account of the 2020 clash at the Galwan Valley. The story-screenplay has been adapted for the film by Suresh Nair in association with Chintan Gandhi and Chintan Shah, with the latter also penning the dialogues,” says a source close to the project.

The chapter captures how Indian soldiers, though vastly outnumbered, bravely defended their territory against the well-trained PLA troops.

The film is scheduled to go on floors in the second week of July, with a start-to-finish schedule of 70 days across Mumbai and Ladakh. “Salman loved the story and will begin his [military] prep from the end of May. He has already begun physical training for his role at his farmhouse in Panvel,” adds the source. Apart from Khan, the film will feature three younger actors in prominent roles.

What happened at the Galwan Valley?
According to reports, on June 14, 2020, Chinese troops erected tents and an observation post on the LAC (Line of Actual Control), flouting a mutual agreement between India and China. Colonel Bikumalla Santosh Babu attempted to initiate dialogue with the Chinese troops, but the situation escalated into a violent melee, resulting in casualties and injuries on both sides. Despite sustaining severe head injuries, Colonel Babu led from the front until his final breath — inspiring his troops to hold their ground. He succumbed to his injuries, reportedly along with 20 other Indian soldiers. His body was cremated with full military honours on June 18, 2020.

Richa Chadha can’t get away by just apologizing-Ashoke Pandit

Ashoke on complaint against Richa: She can’t get away by just apologising
Sugandha Rawal (HINDUSTAN TIMES; November 26, 2022)

Following actor Richa Chadha’s offensive tweet — in response to Northern Army Commander Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi’s remark about the army always being ready to reclaim territories in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) — filmmaker Ashoke Pandit filed a complaint against the actor.

“Galwan says hi,” read Chadha’s now-deleted tweet, making a reference to the clash between Indian and Chinese forces in Galwan Valley.

On Thursday, the filmmaker filed a complaint against the actor at Juhu Police Station in Mumbai, and urged for a First Information Report (FIR) to be registered against her.

“Just because you are a celebrity, you cannot go ahead and mock our soldiers; we are alive because of them. They protect the nation. It is an anti-national act by this lady; she is insulting the country,” Pandit shares, adding, “When I read the tweet, images of the family crying, shouting and screaming when the bodies of the soldiers came home, came to my mind. I thought instead of just tweeting or showing my anger on social media, I should stand by our soldiers.”

On Thursday, Chadha had apologized for hurting the feelings of the “brothers in the Army”, adding that her intention was not to offend anyone. But, Pandit asserts, “She can’t say anything and later say sorry about it. I will see to it that action is taken against her. I will approach higher authorities and, if necessary, the CM, and see to it that an FIR is filed. One can’t just say anything and get away by apologizing with a note. Sorry is not an answer to it.”

We tried reaching out to Chadha for a comment, but she was unavailable till the time we went to press.

AKSHAY, KAY KAY CONDEMN RICHA’S TWEET
Several celebs, including actors Akshay Kumar and Kay Kay Menon expressed their disappointment at Chadha’s tweet. “Hurts to see this. Nothing ever should make us ungrateful towards our armed forces. Woh hain toh aaj hum hain,” tweeted Kumar.

Menon tweeted: “Our brave men and women in uniform, put their life on the line to keep every citizen of our Nation safe & secure! Least we can do is to behold love, respect & gratitude, in our hearts, towards such valour! #JaiHind! Vande Mataram. (sic).”

Mumbai: Filmmaker and social activist Ashoke Pandit on Thursday filed a written complaint to the Juhu police, asking them to register an FIR against actor Richa Chadha for allegedly “mocking and insulting our security forces, especially those who laid down their lives in Galwan Valley fighting terrorists”.

The matter began after Chadha reacted on Twitter to a statement attributed to Northern Army Commander Lt General Upendra Dwivedi. The officer was quoted as saying, “We r fully prepared to take back PoK from Pakistan. We r waiting the orders from govt. We will complete the operation quickly. Before that if Pakistan is violating. . . ” Chadha responded, “Galwan says hi.”

A section of social media users promptly criticized her comments as “mocking the Indian Army and belittling the sacrifice of the jawans” in the 2020 Galwan skirmish between India and China. One Supreme Court lawyer called for her arrest.

Later on Thursday, the actor deleted the “controversial” post and apologized with another tweet. “Even though it can never be my intention in the least, if the 3 words which are being dragged into a controversy have offended or hurt anyone, I apologize and also say that it would sadden me if even unintentionally my words have triggered this feeling in my brothers in the Fauj of which my own Nanaji has been an illustrious part in 1960s. As a Lt. Col. he took a bullet in the leg in the Indo-China War in the 60s. My Mamaji was a paratrooper. It’s in my blood. A whole family is affected when their son is martyred or even injured while saving the nation which is made up of people like us and I personally know how it feels. It is an emotive issue for me.” Chadha tagged a lawyer in the post.

Meanwhile, among those who objected to her comment was actor Akshay Kumar. He tweeted, “Hurts to see this. Nothing ever should make us ungrateful towards our armed forces. Woh hain toh aaj hum hain.”

Complainant Ashoke Pandit tweeted, “I appeal to all the members of film & TV industry to come forward and condemn Richa Chadha’s mockery against our brave jawans. Your silence will send a wrong signal to the nation at large. The anger against our industry then becomes justified.”

A segment of right wing protesters called for the boycott of Chadha’s upcoming movie ‘Fukrey 3’.

Actor Richa Chadha tweeted an apology after being slammed by social media users for posting about the 2020 Galwan clash, where several Indian Army soldiers lost their lives. On Wednesday, the actor reacted to Northern Army Commander Lt. General Upendra Dwivedi’s statement that the Indian Army is ready to execute orders like taking back Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK). Reacting to it, Chadha wrote on Twitter, “Galwan says hi (sic).”

Following backlash, the actor tweeted: “I apologise and also say that it would sadden me if even unintentionally my words have triggered this feeling in my brothers in the Fauj of which my own Nanaji has been an illustrious part. As a Lt. Col, he took a bullet in the leg in the Indo-China war, in 1960s. My Mamaji was a paratrooper (sic).”

Aamir Khan's Laal Singh Chaddha won't reach Ladakh, due to India-China clash

Aamir Khan returned from the Amritsar schedule on March 17
Aamir Khan calls off Laal Singh Chaddha's schedule in the region following Sino-India clash in Galwan Valley, considers shooting portion in Kargil
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; July 6, 2020)

The ambitious story of Laal Singh Chaddha has taken actor-producer Aamir Khan and director Advait Chandan to Kolkata, Delhi, Rajasthan, Chandigarh and Amritsar so far. The unit had two major schedules pending in Delhi and Ladakh when the nationwide lockdown brought its shoot to a grinding halt in March. Even as Khan is certain about not resuming shoot until October, the superstar — along with co-producer Viacom18 Motion Pictures — has decided to cancel the Ladakh schedule in light of the India-China military standoff along the Galwan Valley.

A source reveals, "Given the current scenario, shooting in Ladakh is out of the question. So, Aamir, Advait and the top brass at the studio are considering shifting the venue to Kargil. The final call will be taken in the coming weeks."

The film, also starring Kareena Kapoor Khan, is an official adaptation of Tom Hanks-starrer Forrest Gump (1994). It was originally slated for a Christmas 2020 release, but has now been pushed to 2021.

In contrast to several filmmakers who are planning to go back to work, Khan has apparently informed the co-producers that he does not wish to put the cast and crew at risk by resuming shoot. "With some of Aamir's staff members testing positive for Coronavirus last week, the actor is all the more certain that he will not return to the set until the situation is under control. He also pointed out that some countries that opened up are now experiencing a second wave of the virus. Though a significant portion of the movie remains to be filmed, the creators and the studio have unanimously decided to exercise caution and hold off the shoot for now."

mid-day texted studio head Ajit Andhare, who confirmed that the Ladakh schedule has been called off.

Post Galwan Valley attack, Hindi films won't release in China?

As the ‘boycott China’ chorus grows louder, we find out what’s at stake for Hindi films in China
Prashant Singh and Juhi Chakraborty (HINDUSTAN TIMES; June 19, 2020)

Of late, China has emerged as a lucrative market for Hindi films, though it’s still not anywhere near other overseas countries such as US, UK or Europe. PK which released in China in 2015, Dangal in 2017, Secret Superstar, Bajrangi Bhaijaan (BB) and Hindi Medium in 2018 and Andhadhun have had dream run at the China box office.

However, the present situation in eastern Ladakh, where 20 soldiers of the Indian Army were killed in a violent confrontation with Chinese troops in Galwan Valley late on Monday, has posed the question of whether Indian films will cease to release in the neighbouring country.

While Dangal earned a whopping ₹1,908 crore, Secret Superstar raked in ₹874 crore. Likewise, PK made ₹831 crore, even as Andhadhun touched ₹324 crore figure in China, while BB also crossed ₹300 crore mark.

No more number games
Filmmaker Nikkhil Advani refuses to look at the balance sheets. “If 20 of our soldiers have been brutally killed, there’s no question of even talking or thinking about having our films released there, or how much financial losses — miniscule or big — it will entail. Hypothetically, if we are in such a tense situation with a country that contributes in a big way to our overseas film business, will we think of releasing films there? No, I don’t think so,” he says.

Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta, whose Kaabil released recently in China, admits that China is “undoubtedly the fastest growing movie market in the world”. “But Hindi films don’t have a definite market share there yet, with a very negligible business. So, it’s not like we are going to lose out on a huge pie if we skip China,” says Gupta. Exhibitor-distributor Akshaye Rathi puts it in perspective. “It’s a producer’s call. Money-wise, you don’t stand to lose much. So, our filmmakers can skip it,” he says.

A high probability
Film trade expert Amul Vikas Mohan feels that film industry is most likely to take a stand on the matter. “I will be shocked if they don’t. I understand that China is a brand new market, and movies are doing well there. But regardless of the financial aspect, the patriotic feeling is much stronger and that will affect decisions,” he says. Trade analyst Atul Mohan also agrees that when emotions run high in the country, it won’t be business as usual for the film industry.

Not a big blow
Despite the whole monstrosity about the China market, Rathi notes that revenue-wise, not releasing films in China will not make much of a difference to the overall scheme of things.

“China has a policy where they allow only a limited number of foreign language films to release. So, we weren’t looking at the release of more than three to four Indian films there anyway. Plus, the business policies that the Chinese entertainment industry has is such that out of the big money that a film makes, a very small share comes to the producers,” Rathi explains.

The Covid factor
While it indeed is lucrative for Indian filmmakers to release their films directly on 25,000 screens in China, the Coronavirus pandemic has anyway dented that prospect and cast a cloud of uncertainty about theatres opening in such large numbers.

Joginder Tuteja says, “It will take two months for an Indian film to get a clearance for release there. The films which are going to release are anyway old, they will go there, release silently and come back. It won’t make much of an impact,” he shares.

The big rush!
Till now, a number of Hindi films have hit Chinese big screens starting with 3 Idiots and PK among others. Of late, Hindi films like Hichki, Andhadhun, Kaabil and Mom released in the neighbouring country to varying degrees of success. In April, reports suggested that Hrithik Roshan-starrer Super 30 will release in China once the situation becomes ‘normal’ after Coronavirus pandemic. We tried to reach out to Reliance Entertainment Group CEO Shibasish Sarkar about the same, but he refused to comment.
