Muting 'virgin' in Finding Fanny was a mistake-CBFC chairperson

Virgin is back!
Roshmilla Bhattacharya (MUMBAI MIRROR; September 6, 2014)

On August 25, Mirror had reported that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) told Homi Adajania that if he wanted his upcoming film, Finding Fanny, to be passed with a U/A certificate, he'd have to snip off a "vulgar" line in which leading lady Deepika Padukone tells Arjun Kapoor, "I am a virgin." Now Mirror has learnt that the line has been cleared by Chairperson of the CBFC, Leela Samson and is back in the film.

Confirming the news, a relieved and elated Homi said, "When we went for the Hindi dub, we sent a mail to Leela Samson stating our case. We were not objecting to the cut, we were just confused by the contradictory action because the line had been passed earlier in the trailers. We wanted some clarity on the issue. She agreed with us that if it had been passed earlier, continuation should be maintained. It's a positive sign."

When contacted, Leela Samson said, "I was not aware of what had happened till they (filmmakers) told me about it. They were justified in their request. It was a mistake which needed to be rectified. I took the necessary step."

Censors confused about use of the term 'virgin' in Finding Fanny

Seema Sinha (BOMBAY TIMES; September 3, 2014)

The Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC) may have asked the makers of Finding Fanny to chop the line -'I am a virgin', owing to the use of the word 'virgin', but the dialogue has been retained in the promo, which is currently on air. It still remains unclear whether the word 'virgin' is a complete no-no, or if the filmmakers will be barred from using the word only in a certain context. Apparently , the film's director, Homi Adajania, felt that the CBFC was being stringent with his film.

Nandini Sardesai, a senior CBFC member, asserts, “It is very subjective, just a perception and there are no set rules on the usage of such words. And the producer has every right to appeal to the revising committee if they are not satisfied with the decision of the examining committee. It is strange that the dialogue has been allowed in the promo, but not in the movie.“

Neither the CBFC Chairperson, Leela Samson, nor the makers of Finding Fanny were available for comment.

Censor people wanted to see me in a bikini-Dimple Kapadia

Dimple Kapadia in 'Finding Fanny'
Bharati Dubey (MID-DAY; August 28, 2014)

Filmmaker Homi Adajania says you forced him to cast you in his film, Finding Fanny.
True, I am not his favourite artiste. I threatened him, saying that I’ll write his name in the suicide note if he didn’t remedy this right away. But seriously, I simply love him and his talent. He is fantabulous. I did a brilliant film with him called Being Cyrus, and since then I’ve been a fan. I think he brings out the best in me.

How did Finding Fanny happen?
He narrated the film’s story during the making of Cocktail and I told him that I’d rather do this film than that. After the success of Cocktail, I thought that he wouldn’t come back to me. But I am glad he did — I got to work with stalwarts like Naseersaab and Pankaj Kapoor and talented youngsters such as Deepika (Padukone) and Arjun ( Kapoor). I felt rusty among them, but Homi looked out for me.

How would you describe this phase of your career?
It is a very interesting phase and I am getting some lovely offers. Sometimes I don’t feel like one in a film; that would be Rudaali (1992). The point is that it doesn’t matter how you look, what matters is you look the character and try your best to play the part.

The Censor Board has edited out one of your scenes in the film; the one with the butt…
I think they wanted to see me in a bikini, but since I had a skirt on, they decided to cut the scene.

What was it like to work with your son-in-law Akshay Kumar?
I did one film with him, Patiala House. He is very keen that I work and keeps telling me, “Maa, kaam karo" — he knows that I’m very laidback. If he has something interesting to offer, he tells me about it, but my first answer is no. Javed Akhtar jokes that if there is a bowl that has four chits with ‘yes’ written on them and one with a ‘no’, then Dimple will pick up the ‘no’ in a heartbeat. I have done a lot of mistakes, but I have no regrets — be it in films or personal life. I am an introvert and like to be left alone.

Do you think your daughters Twinkle and Rinkie should’ve continued acting?
No, I think they are doing a good job of whatever they have chosen to do — they have a good life and good kids.

Do you think Aarav has a starry streak in him?
I don’t know about that, but I know that Kakaji (Rajesh Khanna) has predicted that he’ll be the next superstar. When Kakaji predicts something, it comes true. He had seen me at a party once and said the same about me.

Don’t you think Vardan Aashirwaad should be declared a heritage structure?
It belongs to my children now, and it’s their birthright. That’s all I have to say about this.

Finding Fanny's August 25 premiere gets postponed

A still from the film
Bharati Dubey (MID-DAY; August 22, 2014)

The advanced premiere of Homi Adajania’s film, Finding Fanny, was scheduled to take place on August 25, but it has now been postponed to September as the film is yet to be certified by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Dinesh Vijan, producer of the film, says, “Yes, it’s true. We were planning to hold the premiere on August 25, but in lieu of the recent developments at CBFC, we don’t want to take any chances.” It may be recalled here that after the trailer of the film garnered good reviews, the film’s producers had decided to host the film’s premiere 17 days before its actual release on September 12. As a result of this, the makers had to let go of the opportunity to premiere their film at the Toronto Film Festival.

A source says that after the recent arrest of CBFC CEO Rakesh Kumar, all work at the Censor Board has come to a standstill. “Keeping this in mind, it’s perhaps wise on the makers’ part to host Finding Fanny’s premiere in September,” says the source.
