Kiran Rao leaves 'dream project' Filmbay due to differences with NFDC

Filmbay, the city's indie film hub, was her brainchild but the filmmaker has left the project stating that her vision is being 'compromised'.
Ankur Pathak (MUMBAI MIRROR; May 27, 2015)Mirror was the first to report that Mumbai is getting its first indie film theatre, Filmbay, which will be exclusively dedicated to world cinema. The initiative was Kiran Rao's brainchild and after looking for financers and a venue for the past three years, she found backing with the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) and the perfect space for the hub in Bandra earlier this year.
But now the filmmaker has parted ways with NFDC though the project continues on track. A source told Mirror that Kiran was passionately involved with the project as its creative director but bureaucratic delays caused her decision to step down from her post.
Confirming this, Nina Lath Gupta, Managing Director, NFDC said that though she was unaware of the reasons for Kiran's exit, the organisation "deeply values their association."
"We hold Kiran in the highest regard and our commitment to Filmbay as envisaged by Ms. Rao remains steadfast and it is our intention to set it up as per the plans worked out by her and her team."
When we asked her about the sudden exit, she said, "Kiran is the best person to tell you that. At NFDC, we hope that we will get an opportunity to work with her again in the near future."
When we reached out to Kiran to ask why she abandoned, what she once termed as her 'baby,' she said: "FilmBay was a dream project for me, and when I found an ideal space for it, I took the project to NFDC with a lot of hope and expectation. To let go of it now, after working on creating a blueprint for the space for three years, is heartbreaking."
Elaborating on the reasons, she said, "Unfortunately their ways of working are very different from mine, and I did not want to be involved with a compromised version of my vision. So it is with a lot of sadness that I have left. I hope that someday I am able to fulfill my dream. I wish NFDC all the very best, and hope that they create a hub for film culture which our city truly deserves."

FilmBay in Bandra will be a dedicated space for screening alternative cinema.

For several years, this two-storied structure on Bandra's Carter Road
was only used sporadically by the neighbourhood's residents for annual
Holi parties. The BMC who owned the over 7000 square feet space, has now
leased it to the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) for 30
years. The NFDC, along with top Bollywood filmmakers, is now turning
this place into a film hub, dedicated to inide cinema. FilmBay, modelled
on the lines of the IFC Center in New York, will exhibit alternative
cinema and host other film-centric events.
The creative director is Kiran Rao. Anurag Kashyap, Zoya Akhtar, Dibakar Banerjee, Rohan Sippy and film-critic Anupama Chopra make up the advisory panel. There are plans to revamp the structure, the cost of which will be borne by NFDC.
"It'll be dedicated to alternative cinema which often struggles to find spaces for exhibition," said Kiran, who presented Ship of Theseus. "When I came to Mumbai in 1998, I realised that there are no spaces in the city for independent movies. This can be demoralising for an indie filmmaker. For the past few years, I've been on the hunt for a nice space. Now, along with NFDC, we've found it."
Starting December 1, FilmBay, which can accomodate over a 100 patrons, will be open all days of the year and host five shows a day. There's space for a cafeteria, a film library, a research centre and the rooftop will be converted into a meeting place for directors and cinema-enthusiasts for post-screening discussions. The programming will also include children's cinema. NFDC is actively working towards a digital archive of world-cinema titles to be screened at the venue.
"The template is similar to the British Film Institute (BFI). From workshops and master-classes to premieres of indie films, if a director is facing exhibition problems, FilmBay will screen it if the film is of exceptional artistic value," says Kiran.
NFDC MD Nina Lath Gupta says that tickets will be nominally priced and they'll be open to memberships too. "FilmBay is part of NFDC's larger vision. The idea is to ensure that a different type of cinema becomes commercially acceptable to us," she said.

On March 14, Aamir Khan brought in his 50th birthday with family and select friends who had driven down to a resort In Lonavala for the weekend. They returnmed home with memento bags commemorating AK's golden jubilee run. Wife Kiran Rao has one too, and it was on display at FilmBay.
