The Central Board of
Film Certification (CBFC) has refuted news that the film
adaptation of the erotic novel, Fifty Shades Of Grey, has been banned in
India.
Reportedly, the examining committee of the Censor Board recently watched the watered-down version and found it too provocative for Indian audiences.“Many mainstream films don't get clearance in the first step. The producers can appeal against the decision and go for the revising committee's opinion.Even if the revising committee gives a verdict refusing certification, an appeal can be made to Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT). The film is in the process of certification and they have to revert to us,“ said Shravan Kumar, CEO, CBFC.
Added a member of the Board, “The film has not been banned. Only the government can ban the film, the CBFC cannot. There is no reason why it shouldn't release in India.“
The film's producers were not available for comments.

It's going to be aar ya paar for director Sam Taylor-Johnson's adaptation of what has been widely designated as porn material. Fifty Shades Of Grey has already been banned in many countries. The fate of the film in India now hangs in the balance.
On Monday the Censor Board Of Film Certification (CBFC) will watch the controversial sexy film. But in a cleaned out avatar. Apparently the film's Indian distributors have submitted a sanitised version of Fifty Shades Of Grey for the CFBC to view and certify.
A source from the CBFC says, "We've received a letter along with the film Fifty Shades Of Grey stating that they've submitted a saaf, swachch version of the original so that the film is not completely unpalatable to the censor board members."
In principle what this means is an acceptance by the film's Indian distributors that Fifty Shades Of Grey is indeed not suitable for Indian audiences in the original form. "By making their own cuts and submitting a saaf-suthra version of the highly erotic original the people behind the film are admitting to an unreasonably high erotic content in the material. We will now have to see how far we can evaluate this 'cut' version and how much more has to be cut," says the source from the CBFC.
Fifty Shades Of Grey's Indian release is in a limbo?

On Tuesday, February 17, UAE banned the Hollywood BDSM drama, Fifty Shades Of Grey. It was earlier banned in Malaysia. And there's a question mark over its Indian release with some insisting that the film, which was targeting a Valentine Day's release, has been pushed to May while others speculated that it will never open here.
The film, which exploded at the global box-office with an $ 80 million opening, explores the theme of bondage, dominance, sadism and masochism and features 20-minutes of explicit sex scenes. Hopeful of an Indian release, the studio has reached out to the CBFC, seeking a screening. "They haven't been given an appointment yet but once that is sorted, the makers are optimistic to release the film in the last week of February or early March," says a source close to the studio.
Meanwhile, the makers of the Dakota Johnson-Jamie Dornan starrer are exercising self-censorship before the adventurous sexual escapades of the lead pair are unleashed on the viewers. The Indian arm of the Hollywood-studio producing the film has sent back the film print to LA for "internal-trimming".
Said a source from the CBFC, "Once the Indian censors suggest cuts, and in this case they are anticipating several, the producers have to consult with the studio bosses in Los Angeles on the changes prior to the Indian release. To ensure that the cuts are minimised, the studio is sending a trimmed version to the censors. Once the drive codes are submitted, the Board will take a call on the cuts."
Meanwhile, Twitter was quick to mock the conservative attitude of the CBFC with jokes like, "50 Shades of Grey India version is only 3 minutes long, comprising only the start and end credits."
Ashoke Pandit, a member of the Board, insists that there's no reason why the film shouldn't release in India. "It will follow the normal process of censoring like any other Hollywood film coming to India. How many cuts it gets will depend on the members present at the screening," he pointed out.
Neither the studio nor CBFC Chairperson Pahlaj Nihalani were available for comment.
