In six months, Bollywood delivers 2 blockbusters, 1 surprise super-hit

Trailer of Ranbir Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor's Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar to release with Pathaan
Box Office India Trade Network

The first half of the year continued from where we left in 2022 with most films biting the dust. PATHAAN hit it out of the park with record numbers edging past BAAHUBALI 2: THE CONCLUSION though in GROSS terms the Prabhas-starrer remains ahead. PATHAAN saw Shah Rukh Khan in the action genre which should have happened 10-15 years ago as a lot of his non performers were down to genre not being correct at the time of release for such a big star.

THE KERALA STORY was the surprise of the first six months as it racked up huge numbers for what the actual film as worth and the collections were more organic than last year's THE KASHMIR FILES which was on similar lines. Both these films are very low cost films with huge returns and are compared to biggest low cost film ever JAI SANTOSHI MAA (1975). But the box office success of these films is a notch lower as the reach is less than that film.

ZARA HATKE ZARA BACHKE was another big HIT and it is actually the most important film of the year as it is basically the bread and butter type film for the industry and it can still work. The film shows the audience profile has changed from upper middle/middle class to lower middle/middle class as nothing else in this zone has worked. But generally those films were more like pre pandemic aiming at the upper middle/middle classes. This film scored strongly in A centres of the Hindi belts pushing the box office over 80 crore nett with the help of super hit music.

The other moderate successes were TU JHOOTHI MAIN MAKKAAR and SATYAPREM KI KATHA but today even moderate is good. Actually today even a FLOP tag is pretty respectable as its one disaster after another. TU JHOOTHI MAIN MAKKAAR had a lot going for it with a strong cast and good music. As the film had a story and milieu which was very urban, the reach got limited and that reflects in collections. SATYAPREM KI KATHA is another film which has done well for what its worth. The film did not have much going for it and its managed a decent run till date and should end up around that 70 crore nett mark or near. The AVERAGE mark is disappointing for TU JHOOTHI MAIN MAKKAAR but you take it for SATYAPREM KI KATHA.

Last year there was support from the South with KGF: CHAPTER 2 and RRR but so far there has been nothing this year. Hollywood had some successful films with JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4 being the surprise with collections of 50 crore nett. FAST X did a bigger number but expectations were also much higher.

There are flop theatrical films put in the list but as mentioned above, a flop is not bad as most films are disasters at the ticket counters today. The classifications of the first half of 2023 is as follows.

(Crisp) Movie Review: FAST X by FENIL SETA

Fast X is a true blue action entertainer that takes the franchise one level up. The previous film, Fast & Furious 9, was underwhelming; it had limited action and was unexciting. This film, however, is loaded with some incredible action scenes and stunts, some of which will take your breath away. It’s commendable how the film’s team are able to give the audiences something new and spectacular. This is no feat, especially when viewers have seen it all in the previous 9 parts. The villain this time is ruthless and crazy like no other from this series. On the flipside, some action scenes seemed forced. And in some places, the cinematic liberties went to another level. Speaking of performances, Vin Diesel is rocking. Jason Momoa steals the show as the badass villain. Michelle Rodriguez (Letty) is dependable. Tyrese Gibson (Roman Pearce), Ludacris (Tej Parker), Nathalie Emmanuel (Ramsey) and Sung Kang (Han) are quite good as well as funny. Leo Abelo Perry (Brian) and John Cena (Jakob Toretto) are adorable. Jason Statham (Deckard Shaw) registers an impact, in a cameo. Charlize Theron (Cipher) and Brie Larson (Tess) are impressive. Others do well. All in all, Fast X is a paisa-vasool film. Needless to say, watch it only on the BIG screen.

My rating - *** ½ out of 5!

WILL FAST X MANAGE TO CROSS THE 100-CRORE MARK?

One of the biggest Hollywood films of the year, Fast X, is all set to release in cinemas tomorrow, that is, Thursday, May 18. It belongs to the Fast And Furious series which has been very popular in India. The series got a boost with Fast & Furious 7, which collected a huge Rs. 97.86 crores. Fast & Furious 8 collected Rs. 86.79 crores. Fast & Furious 9 sadly had a delayed release in India. Moreover, it came at a time when the cinemas in the crucial market, Maharashtra, were shut. Many had seen the film through pirated websites by the time it was released and also, its word of mouth was mixed. As a result, it collected just around Rs. 16 crores in India.

However, Fast X is releasing a day before its USA release in India. Moreover, the trailer has clicked big time. Hence, the fans of the series are sure to come in big numbers. It’ll enjoy a clean one-month run with very little competition till the release of Adipurush on June 16.

Fast X is releasing on a working Thursday. As a result, the first-day collections will be fine but not huge. It’ll open in the range of Rs. 10 crores. But from the second day, the collections can jump and if all goes well, it will have a weekend of Rs. 50-60 crores. In other words, Fast X can be the highest Hollywood grosser of 2023 in India in four days, beating the lifetime collections of John Wick: Chapter 4 and Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3.

If word of mouth is encouraging, Fast X can hold well. Its second weekend will decide if it can cross the Rs. 100 crore mark. If that happens, it’ll be the first film of the franchise to do so.

Hollywood to rule screens this summer

Hollywood to rule screens this summer
Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; April 19, 2023)

This summer, Indian theatres will be dominated by Hollywood. Reason? There are as many as eight English biggies releasing in the next three months. April started on a good note, with The Pope’s Exorcist and the animated film The Super Mario Bros Movie finding takers. In fact, the former eclipsed the collections of the Aditya Roy Kapur and Mrunal Thakur-starrer Gumraah.

Devang Sampat, CEO, Cinepolis India, says that summer has been ruled by English films even in the past. “There are only about four-six Bollywood blockbusters in a year and summer has always belonged to Hollywood. They mostly release their big films around this time.”

However, this time around, the gap between Bollywood and Hollywood is glaring, with no Bollywood film releasing in May. Trade analyst Komal Nahta says, “Production was low last year. Films weren’t doing well, so people in Bollywood were not sure what was happening. They wanted to introspect.”

WILL BOLLYWOOD COPE?
Currently, all eyes are on the Salman Khan-starrer Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan, which releases on April 21. After that, with big Hollywood titles such as Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3, Fast X, The Little Mermaid, Spider-Man: Across The Spider Verse, Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts, The Flash and Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny releasing, it’s sure to be international films shining all the way.

Later, (actors) Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan, Ajay Devgn’s Maidaan, Prabhas’ Adipurush and Kartik Aaryan’s Satyaprem Ki Katha could help Bollywood shine again. “Everyone is looking forward to Bollywood releases in June. As of now, Jawan’s release date is confirmed for June 2,” shares Rajender Singh Jyala, chief programming officer, PVR Limited.

Trade expert Atul Mohan adds, “Hamare paas titles hi nahin hain abhi. So, there’s no competition between Bollywood and Hollywood.”

However, exhibitor Akshaye Rathi says franchises such as Spider-Man and Fast & Furious aren’t seen as outside films, because they have a huge following in India: “Tom Cruise and Dwayne Johnson are superstars in India too. Their films will have a solid impact, but I also have to give it (credit) to our industry for fighting tough times. We saw what happened with Pathaan and a bunch of films before that. It’s only a matter of time before we get back in a big way all over again.”
