I've advised Shah Rukh Khan rest. We'll perform another arthroscopic surgery on him-Dr Sanjay Desai

Even though his orthopaedic has advised complete rest, the 50-year-old actor continues to fight reel life battles

On May 21, 2015, after Shah Rukh Khan underwent an arthroscopic surgery on his left knee at Breach Candy, senior orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Sanjay Desai, had told Mirror that the 50-year-old actor had been suffering from a prolonged knee problem and in acute pain for over seven years.

On Wednesday, the actor, who had been filming extensively since the last two weeks for an upcoming release at Madh Island, was writhing in pain as he clutched his left leg and adjusted his knee cap.

“We had treated him with painkillers and injections five months ago but following repeated injuries, the pain had worsened. The chondral fissure of the patella in Mr Khan’s knee has completely worn out and repairing it is difficult and will take a lot of time,” Dr Desai told Mirror.

The actor has been strictly advised to wear his metallic knee cap, which he rarely does, and has also been instructed to not do any action or strenuous sequences in films. “Since he will continue to shoot, we will perform another arthroscopic surgery on him to clean up the damaged part after 10 months. I’ve advised him rest,” Dr Desai added with a sigh.

However, it is highly unlikely that SRK, a self-confessed insomniac and workaholic, will heed the medical advice. After filming for three schedules of Imtiaz Ali’s The Ring, the actor plans to dive into Aanand L Rai’s next in 2017, in which he plays a dwarf.

Shah Rukh Khan undergoes arthroscopic surgery for chronic pain & swelling in left knee

THE TIMES OF INDIA (May 22, 2015)

Actor Shah Rukh Khan underwent minimally invasive surgery to fix his left kneecap at Breach Candy Hospital on Thursday. He will be discharged on Friday but has been advised 10 days of rest, said his orthopedic surgeon Dr Sanjay Desai.

“He had been suffering from pain and swelling in his left knee for the last eight to ten months. He had even been given special injections to control the symptoms,“ the doctor said. “The surgery confirmed what we had suspected that he had suffered chondrol wear (problems with the cartilages attached to the smooth side of the kneecap). While such damage is found in men who are over 60 years of age, it has occurred over a decade early in Khan,“ said Dr Desai. The wear was mainly caused due to injuries.

Khan has undergone about seven surgeries, including orthopaedic interventions for his wrist, shoulders and spine, in the last seven to eight years. He last underwent orthopedic surgery on his right shoulder after shooting for his film 'Ra One', which too had been performed by Dr Desai. However, it remains to be seen if Thursday's surgery will be adequate or he will need further intervention

MUMBAI MIRROR (May 22, 2015)

On Thursday, May 21, Shah Rukh Khan underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee at Breach Candy Hospital. Speaking to Mirror, senior orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Sanjay Desai said, "A fortnight ago Mr Khan consulted me for a prolonged knee problem. He'd been in pain for over seven years. I've treated him with pain relief medicines and injections, but following repeated injuries, the pain has worsened.

Over the last eight months, I've given him two injection to reduce the swelling. This time I have decided to do arthroscopy to understand the extent of damage so we can decide on the future course of action." Yesterday he was operated upon. The two-hour surgery confirmed Chondral Wear of Patella (knee-cap). Small cuts were made to insert a tiny camera and surgical tools into the knee for the procedure. "I cleaned up the damaged part, removed dead and infected tissues. He should be discharged tomorrow. I've advised him to rest for a month, not to do any stunts." SRK's been shooting nonstop, from Chennai Express to Happy New Year to Fan and Raees will be on a forced break now. - MMB

Will Shah Rukh Khan need knee surgery?

Reza Noorani (BOMBAY TIMES; February 22, 2014)

Post Shah Rukh’s recent injury, which initially impacted his shoulder, it’s now his knee that is giving him trouble. His doctor, Sanjay Desai said, “After the door fell on him, his kneecap has been badly bruised and it is quite painful. We haven’t decided on a surgery although it is always on the cards. But I gave him knee injections recently.” The doctor also said that though Shah Rukh is a lot better, he is not completely okay and that they are looking at other noninvasive options since he has already had nine surgeries for various problems.

MUMBAI MIRROR (February 4, 2014)

Ten days after an unhinged door came crashing and packed him off to a hospital, the indomitable Shah Rukh Khan resumes work today in Chembur for Farah Khan’s Happy New Year.

Mirror has learnt that there will be no heavy-duty action or dance sequence and some of the shots have been modified keeping SRK’s fragile condition in mind.

The accident which happened on the sets of the same film, left the actor with a fractured shoulder and a torn left knee tendon. The doctor had advised him complete bed rest for a couple of weeks, but SRK has been hobbling around with a cast on his leg and a crutch manacled to his hand. He was last spotted at Ahaana Deol’s wedding having a long conversation with the bride’s mother Hema Malini.

Trust Shah Rukh Khan to find style even in injury. While his much-talked about golden sling has inspired many (latest being Esha Deol), the superstar was seen in a trendy knee brace at Dharmendra and Hema Malini’s daughter Ahaana’s wedding on Sunday.

It has been almost a week since Shah Rukh was injured while shooting for Happy New Year when a door came crashing on him at the set. His physiotherapist Dr Ali Irani says, “Shah Rukh is being treated by his orthopaedic surgeon Dr Sanjay Desai and me. Dr Desai has ruled out a fracture right now. There’s a deep contusion in the bone (indicated by a massive bruise). We are letting nature take its course and heal the knee naturally with a lot of rest at home and ice packs. My staff and I are giving him physiotheraphy. His knee is supported by a brace so he doesn’t bend it or hurt it by putting pressure on it. He’s also undergoing cryotherapy.”
