Has the switch from movies to television given you a new perspective?
It hasn't been as dramatic a shift. It's only when you are working on a big film project that you are pampered. If it's a small production, you are working on shoestring budgets. I was prepared for television because I had been warned by friends who had already explored the medium. They told me that I won't get any time to myself due to the hectic schedule. I am okay with my life being hectic.
For some, television is a stepdown from movies.
I don't care what notion people have about the medium. I was sure this is the right step for me. For me, work is work. It doesn't matter what medium it appears on. In a film, you have two-and-a-half hours to tell your story whereas on television, the story can go on for a year or more. That is probably the only difference.
Do you watch television in your free time?
I used to watch a lot of TV. I have been a fan of Diya Aur Baati Hum and Naagin. I love the concept of shape-shifting snakes. The glamour quotient on the show is so high. It's like our own story of mermaids or unicorns.
What made you give a nod to Internet Wala Love?
I play a glamorous lady boss who is professional, hardworking and strict, and expects the rest of the staff to follow suit. It's refreshing to be offered such a role because, more often than not, you have traditional roles coming your way. I can slip into traditional roles anytime in the future, but this was too interesting to let go off.
How was the experience of working with co-stars Shivin Narang and Tunisha Sharma?
People on the set are warm. It becomes a happy environment when you have like-minded people working with you. Shivin and Tunisha are hardworking and made great co-stars.
The show revolves around online dating. Do you think, in India, the concept of finding love online is met with apprehension?
Once people begin to own up that they've met people they could connect with, online, it will be great. Why should you be embarrassed about it? Finding love online is viable. We are so engrossed in our own lives that we hardly have the scope to meet new people. The digital world serves as a platform to find like-minded people. When we, as a society, embrace the idea, it will become an accepted fact, like it has in the West.
Since TV is based on TRP ratings, the storyline of shows are often changed to bring in numbers. Are you ready for that?
I am 100 per cent ready. Everyone wants their show to be a success. If the show is not working, it has to be altered. I can't put my foot down and say, don't change my character. It's unfair to ask people who have invested their money into the serial to do everything my way. In fact, I should be doing everything possible to make the series a success. If there is something I can do to course correct the show, I should do it.

No smoking, no phones, no wasting food... these are some of the rules on the sets of TV shows. Those who violate them have to pay a fine or treat the cast and crew

NO WASTING FOOD ON THIS SET
While people can't bring non-vegetarian food on some sets, on others, they have to finish all their food even if they're full. On the sets of Ek Rishta Aisa Bhi, the actors have come up with a rule that anyone found wasting food will have to pay a fine. Rahul Sharma, the male lead of the show, says, “We have a rule on the sets that we don't waste the food on our plates. If does so, they have to pay a fine of Rs 100 and treat the entire cast and crew to cold drinks. In case the quantity of food wasted is large, the fine also increases. There were some actors who had to pay a heavy price for wasting food, because they were fined Rs 100 and were even asked to treat everyone to cold drinks. However, now, many have fallen in line because they don't like being penalised.“
NO SMOKING, NO NON-VEG
The 'no smoking' rule applies to the sets of many TV shows, since the sets are made of wood and there's always the chance that they could catch fire if someone throws a cigarette. So me producers want non-vegetarian food and cigarettes as far away from the sets as possible. Himanshu Soni, currently seen in Neeli Chhatri Waale, says, “Our producer has a rule that nobody can bring or order non-veg food. The rule book says anybody caught eating non-veg food has to pay a fine of Rs 200. There was an artiste on the show who had brought non-veg food and ended up paying the fine. We also asked him to give us a party and order veg food for us. I am a vegetarian, so I don't face such issues, but non-vegetarians sometimes get hassled. Perhaps some of the actors have their food in their vanity vans.“ The same rule applies to the sets of shows like Diya Aur Baati Hum, Ek Rishta Aisa Bhi (which went off air on February 13) and Mere Rang Mein Rangne Waali.
KEEP YOUR PHONE ON SILENT
It's really irritating when a phone rings in the middle of an important meeting, right? It turns out, directors feel the same way if something like that happens while they are shooting a dramatic scene. Ravindra Gautam, who is currently directing the upcoming show Begusarai, says, “I have this rule on my new show that nobody's phone should ring while the scene is being filmed. If it does happen, the person is supposed to pay a fine of Rs 500. If the phone rings loudly, it disturbs everyone and sometimes, if we are shooting an intense scene, it ends up disrupting the entire mood. So, I have created this rule. In fact, even I have ended up paying the fine a couple of times! When I was directing Madhubala Ek Ishq Ek Junoon, I remember Vivian Dsena and Drashti Dhami also had to pay fines because their phones would ring during the shoot. It's because of this rule that actors and other crew members have started keeping their phones on silent mode or leaving their phones with someone.“
It seems that this rule is applicable on the sets of other shows as well, including Humsafars, which went off air on February 20. Payal Rohatgi, who is a part of Humsafars, says, “I am very particular about keeping my phone on silent, but once it happened that my phone rang loudly, while a shot was being taken. It so happened that Sangram (her beau) had said that he would call me in five minutes and during that time, when I was waiting for his call, I forgot to keep the phone on silent mode. It rang in the middle of a shot and I was quite embarrassed. I treated the entire unit, which comprises 120 members, to ice creams. The place where we shoot is near an ice cream factory, and there's nothing else available.“
JUMPED TO A CONCLUSION? PAY UP!
We're all guilty of leaping to conclusions and later trying to get out of them with the excuse, 'I felt like it was the right thing'. But what if there was a fine on jumping to conclusions? Something similar exists on the sets of Mere Rang Mein Rangne Waali.Samridh Bawa, who plays LD on the show, says, “On the sets, our director has created this rule that no one is allowed to say 'Sir, mujhe aisa laga' ya `maine aisa socha'. If we utter this phrase, we have to pay a fine of `10. Our director says, `If you have any doubts, come and clear them. Don't assume things'. In fact, I have already deposited `100 with my director, because I have a habit of saying these words.Pranali (Ghogare, his co-star in the show), has already paid Rs 150 for the same. This rule even applies to our director, who has to pay `50 if he utters these words. He has paid the fine a couple of times. We have a box kept on the sets and the fines are stored in it. Jab bahut saara jama ho jaayega, we will have a huge party with that money.“

AC explodes on the sets of Diya Aur Baati Hum; 2 technicians injured

On Thursday, a fire broke out on the sets of Star Plus’ most popular show, Diya Aur Baati Hum, when an air conditioner exploded. Lead actors Deepika Singh and Anas Rashid are safe, but two technicians were injured in the incident.
A source from the sets says, “At around 7: 30pm, the star cast was having Iftaar (breaking the Ramzan fast) on the sets and the AC was being repaired. Suddenly the air conditioner burst. The electrician who was repairing the AC suffered burns and a light man who was washing his hands right below the AC suffered a head injury due to the AC falling on his head. Both technicians were rushed to Orbit hospital and a fire brigade was called immediately to control the fire.” Following this incident, shooting for two other shows that are also shot there — O Gujariya of Channel V and Do Dil Bandhe Ek Dori Se of Zee TV — was cancelled immediately.
Work, however, resumed on Friday as per schedule. Producer Sumeet Mittal says, “It could have caused us a major loss but thankfully it was a small fire. Our technicians were injured but they are being treated in the hospital now. The section where the blast occurred is currently being repaired and it will cost us around R 10 lakh.” Anas Rashid says, “We had a double schedule on Thursday and the entire unit was present on the sets, so we decided to have an Iftaar party. But after the blast, shooting was cancelled for the day.”
