been integral contributors to the global dance music industry for almost a decade, Belgian DJ duo Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike (DVLM) enthralled Mumbaikars with their eclectic sets on October 9, at Sunburn’s 10th year anniversary celebrations. In a candid chat, DVLM talk about AR Rahman, Bollywood, Indian fans and food.

How has EDM changed with time?
Vegas: The jump of dance music from the club to radio, TV and national media is probably the biggest shift we’ve ever seen. It’s incredible to see how it has grown in the last few years. Dance music is bigger than ever.
Mike: And whoever feels it hasn’t evolved should see the recent videos from all the amazing festivals around the world. Notice the energy and passion of the crowds at each of those events. We don’t really like the term ‘EDM’; it’s a collective name for a lot of different electronic genres.

What is your take on Indian artistes?
Vegas: We haven’t heard too many, but we’ve learnt that Arijit Singh and A R Rahman are huge.
We’d love to work with Rahman.
Mike: Talking of music in India, I like the whole dance and music going on in your films. It’s quite unique and layered.

Would you want to work on a Bollywood movie’s soundtrack?
Vegas: We love Salman Khan and want to work with him more. We have watched some of his films and he has heard some of our music. So, we have this whole mutual admiration club going on there already.

You have visited India before. What do you like about the country?
Vegas: The warmth. It’s incredible how Indians love diversity. They are so receptive to new sounds.
It’s amazing to be welcomed by such loving fans every year who never give up. We love Indian food. I often go to Indian food joints when I’m in Belgium. We’ve been touring India for so long that we are in love with the cuisine. We love naan, lassi, mud crab and tandoori food.

Celebrated Belgian electro DJ duo Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike are set to bring the house down during the arena tour of the 10th edition of international EDM festival, Sunburn, in India, and while at it, they will be joined by Salman Khan and Virat Kohli, we hear.

Insiders also tell us that a dance- music video featuring the Bollywood star and cricketer is in the offing.
Says a source, “The two will be in Hyderabad on October 8, and will arrive in Mumbai the following day. Salman and Virat, who are avid fans of the DJ duo and have shown support to them on Twitter for the top 1000 DJs poll, have planned a private party with them. They will try their hand at DJing too.” World No 2 DJ Hardwell, who will play a set on September 30 in Bengaluru and on October 1 in New Delhi, is also likely to join the party.

“Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike, the resident DJs of Tomorrowland, are working on a project with Salman, who has been following their music since he saw them play at a Bandra club in February 2013. Post the gig, the star hosted them at his chalet in Lonavala. He loved their single, Wakanda. So, they have been discussing a project for long and now, Virat has joined in,” adds the source.

Karan Singh, CEO, Sunburn Global, says, “Dimitri Vegas-Like Mike enjoy a huge fanbase in Bollywood.
Their association with the Hindi filmdom began with Salman Khan. Every time they come to India, both parties reach out to one another.”

When we reached the DJ pair for a confirmation, they responded saying, “We are grateful that two of the biggest celebrities from India, Salman and Virat, have shown support for our music. We love Bollywood and are open to discussing collaborations provided the fit is correct. We have known Salman for quite some time and he’s an amazing human being with a good heart. We are working on a project that will integrate what India is known for — films, music and sports.”
