Maanvi Gagroo, refers to controversies surrounding both their films; insists she’s not playing a stereotypical overweight girl, written for comic relief

Maanvi Gagroo is all set to impress in her first lead role, in Abhishek Pathak’s directorial debut, Ujda Chaman. She plays Apsara, an overweight girl, opposite a prematurely bald Sunny Singh. And despite having been part of films like No One Killed Jessica and PK and several shows, she admits she felt like a fresher. “There were many in the unit who were clueless about my shows, so, it felt like I was starting afresh,” she says candidly.Why did she wait so long to graduate to the big screen? “I was getting offers to play the hero’s sister or friend, whereas online I had more substantial roles. So, I didn’t really need to do films,” she reasons, pointing out that this one too isn’t a stereotypical Bollywood character, loud and desperate to hook a guy, incorporated for comic relief. “Overweight people are also normal,” she argues.
Maanvi reveals that being in a body suit invited a lot of reactions on the set. “During the shoot of the song 'Outfit' I was sitting next to Guru Randhawa. When I got out of my bodysuit, he initially failed to recognise me,” she laughs.
Has she faced discrimination in the industry as a chubby girl? “Obviously, and I only landed typical bubbly parts. One casting director told me since I wasn’t either skinny or fat, they couldn’t cast me,” she shares. And has her perception towards bald people changed? “I never had a perception to change. Some friends messaged to say they felt Ujda Chaman was their story. One even said losing hair had changed his personality and diminished his confidence,” she admits.
The Delhi girl enjoyed filming in the city. “I was the self-appointed guide, taking the team to the best place for momos and shopping sprees. During a shoot in Dilli Haat, I bumped into my school friend’s mother and sister. Later, he told me how proud they were to see me there,” she beams.
Maanvi is currently shooting for Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan in Varanasi and is all praise for co-star Ayushmann Khurrana. “We share the same sense of humour and crack PJs,” she chortles. That’s surprising given that their respective films, Ujda Chaman and Bala, are embroiled in a court case? “We don’t talk much about the films as we have other things to discuss. And we are both mature enough to not let it affect our equation. He complimented me on my trailer, I did the same,” she signs off.
Yami Gautam explores local bazaars in Delhi for Ginny Weds Sunny

Yami Gautam has started shooting for her upcoming film, Ginny Weds Sunny, last week in Delhi. The actress plays the titular role of Ginny, who is a modern girl with a unique outlook towards life, which reflects in her dressing as well. Since the character is close to her, the Uri: The Surgical Strike actress has been taking keen interest and working on her look along with her stylist Amandeep Kaur.
To ensure that Ginny is more rooted in Delhi, Yami is visiting local markets like Sarojini Nagar and Dilli Haat among others to pick up striking clothes and jewellery for the character.
Says Yami, “Amandeep and I are so excited to be doing this together. This allows us to take her in a direction that works for the film and us symbiotically. I want to stay away from cliched dressing for her and what better than doing her up from start to finish! We are literally building her up one day at a time, keeping in mind the scenes and moods of the character. We are running everything past the production team. Ginny is one of the most endearing parts I have ever been offered. Everything, from her outfits to her simplistic jewellery and even her shoes, is being sourced by us locally.”

When the dramebaaz trio of Bareilly Ki Barfi
visited Delhi recently, they did what any
visitor in the city does – they went on
a food and shopping spree. Shopping for jewellery,
jootis and eating chaat, Ayushmann Khurrana, Kriti
Sanon and Rajkummar Rao had quite a blast exploring
Dilli Haat.
‘AAPKE PAAS LADKO KE LIYE KUCH
NAHI HAI KYA?’
Kriti wanted to try some jhumkas, but the huge variety on offer at the stalls confused her. She kept trying one after the other and asking her co-stars how they looked on her. And the men had the same response each time – “Khareed le, khareed le, bahut achha lag raha hai!” While Kriti was busy doing that, Ayushmann and Rajkummar got bored soon and asked the shopkeeper, “Bhaiya, aapke paas ladko ke liye kuch nahin hai kya? Yahan ladke nahin aate?” Pat came the reply, “Aate hai na. Aise hi ladkiyon ke saath aate hain!” Rajkummar asked, “Aur lete kuch nahin? Ladkon ke liye kya hai?” The stall owner showed them bracelets that were apparently popular among men. Rajkummar wittingly added, “We can shoplift some of these very easily.” Has he ever done that, we asked. Rajkummar said, “Haven’t you? I’ve done that many times. But only sportingly.” To which Ayushmann quipped, “Yes, this is like adventure sports for him!”
DILLI HAAT IS THE REAL DELHI: KRITI
As Rajkummar and Ayushmann went in search of other interesting items, Kriti told us, “I have been to Dilli Haat only twice or thrice before. Pehle hi aana hua hai, uske baad toh aana band ho gaya tha yahan. Though it is hot in Delhi, we really like it. I think coming to Dilli Haat is like coming to the real Delhi – you get silver and junk jewellery, golgappas, chaat papdi, all at one place. The best thing is that you get to see Dilli ki janta here.” Talking of golgappas reminded Kriti that she should try some. While the boys were happy to eat whatever was being served, Kriti had some specific instructions for the golgappa seller. She said, “I want chhote golgappe, suji wala golgappa de dijiye.” Since the stall owner did not have suji golgappas, Kriti refused to eat them. Instead, she joined Ayushmann and Rajkummar in cheering for golgappa shots.
WHEN I HAVE TO BUY LOCAL STUFF, I GO TO JANPATH, SAROJINI: RAJKUMMAR
After the food court, their next stop in Dilli Haat was the shoe stall. As Kriti was unable to pick one, Rajkummar tried a few. “If I feel like buying some local stuff, I go to Janpath or Sarojini Nagar. In fact, when I was in college, I used to go to Sarojini a lot for shopping,” he said. After the stars left Dilli Haat, the shopkeepers told us that fans came looking for the same stuff that the stars were looking at.
TIKKI DONOR AYUSHMANN
After Dilli Haat, the next stop for the team was Shankar Market. As Rajkummar’s character Pritam Vidrohi is a sari salesman in the movie, the actor showed off his sales skills at a shop. He had learned how to drape a sari for the film, so when we asked Rajkummar to show us his skills, he said, “Yes, I had learned how to drape a sari, but it’s been a year, ab toh main bhool gaya.” Ayushmann stepped in to help his co-star. He picked up a sari and draped it around him. “See, it’s so easy,” he said, as Rajkummar followed him. After finishing the sari session at the shop, the trio ordered CP wali chaat and other street food from the market. Kriti wanted Ram ladoo and had a tough time explaining to her team – “that small brown ladoo”. When Ayushmann ordered his favourite kulfi faluda and Kriti offered him tikki chaat, he gave it to Rajkummar and called himself ‘tikki donor’!
