Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Devil still on Ranbir Kapoor's mind?

Ranbir Kapoor
Director Sandeep Reddy Vanga preps for another narration of his next to Ranbir Kapoor, which is touted to be more controversial than Kabir Singh
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; June 21, 2020)

Sandeep Reddy VangaSandeep Reddy Vanga's Kabir Singh completes a year today, and the filmmaker is already gearing up for his next dark themed venture, Devil. In September 2019, the director gave Ranbir Kapoor, who he hopes to cast as the protagonist, a narration which yielded a verbal nod from the actor. A source informs, "After a chat in September, Sandeep caught up with Ranbir for another narration in January."

In the interim, rumours were rife that Baahubali actor Prabhas was being considered for Devil. A trade source refutes the gossip and says, "It's not true. Ranbir hasn't given up on the film. It's a dark role that Ranbir has never attempted before. However, before signing the film, Ranbir wants to read the full bound script. The next meeting is scheduled in August."

The source explains that the "darkness and toxicity in Devil will be much more intense than [what was] seen in Kabir Singh" and the film may receive an A certificate. "Ranbir may garner much more criticism than Shahid Kapoor did," the source adds.

Kapoor has apparently discussed the script with close friend and director Ayan Mukerji. A source close to the actor reveals, "Ayan believes that Devil could be one of the most defining movies of Ranbir's career." Producer Murad Khetani and Reddy remained unavailable for comment.

Yo Yo Honey Singh won't be seen with Salman Khan in Kick's Devil song

Ankur Pathak (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 7, 2014)

Mirror (on June 21) was the first to report that Nargis Fakhri has been finalised for a special number opposite Salman Khan in Sajid Nadiadwala's directorial debut, Kick. The song is Honey Singh's, Mujhe Yaar Na Mile to Mar Java and has been shot at a set created in Film City. It is a devil's den - a desolate, city in ruins.

Salman was dressed in a black sleeveless studded jacket designed by his sister Alvira Khan. “The idea was to bring out the devil in him. You'll see him do some moves you've never seen before," says choreographer Ahmed Khan. Mirror (June 9) was also the first to report that Salman's character in the film goes by the name of Devil.

Ahmed adds that they had more than 200 dancers matching steps with Salman and Nargis for the song and it took them over five days to perfect the number.. “However, Honey Singh won't be seen in the song which took us nearly a week to wrap up. Going by the sheer scale of the song, it'll be a bigger hit than Jumme Ki Raat," he says.

According to him, Jacqueline Fernandez is a “far superior“ dancer than Nargis. “When you see Jumme Ki Raat, you will realise she's an outstanding dancer,“ he says. “But Nargis has great flexibility too."

Check out Nargis Fakhri in Kick's Devil song

Priya Gupta (BOMBAY TIMES; July 6, 2014)

The combined fans of Salman Khan and Yo Yo Honey Singh are in for a big treat. After the release of Jumme Ki Raat and Hangover from the film Kick, director Sajid Nadiadwala has roped in the superhit music maker Yo Yo Honey Singh, who is rapping to a song titled Devil that will have Honey himself along with Salman and Nargis Fakhri in the video.

Salman's name in the film, as we all know, is also Devil and this song will thus be the theme song of the movie. We also learnt that an entire underground city has been created in Film City for the picturisation of this song, which will be released soon. This is the first time that Yo Yo Honey Singh and Salman Khan will be working together and while we were able to get you an exclusive picture of Nargis shooting this song, we can't wait to hear and see this song.

Salman Khan's character in Kick is called Devil

Roshmilla Bhattacharya (MUMBAI MIRROR; June 9, 2014)

Salman Khan's biggest kick in his upcoming Eid release Kick is that his character goes by the name of Devil. He is universally referred to as the Devil in the film, from Nawazuddin Siddiqui to Randeep Hooda and even 'angelic' Jacqueline Fernandez. “He is the Devil incarnate. His character is grey and edgy, even the goatee he sports is a salt and pepper mix. You've never seen him play a character like this before,“ asserts producer-director Sajid Nadiadwala.

Kick is a remake of the 2009 Telugu hit by the same name but Ravi Teja's character in the original went by the name of Kalyan. How did Kalyan become Devil? “Our film is more an adaptation than a remake, only six scenes are similar to the original,“ argues Sajid. “The character justifies the name.“

And how did Salman react to the idea of being called the Devil when Sajid narrated the script to him? “Would you believe that he heard the complete narration only a couple of days ago? When I approached him, he told me he was on if I was directing the film. Before and during the shoot, I again offered to narrate the script several times but he waved me away each time saying, 'Yes, yes, I'll hear it soon.' I think because he went into the project blind, he has grown with the film. It's a truly devilish act and no, there was no knee-jerk reaction to the name,“ smiles the filmmaker.

Quiz him on whether they were inspired by the Heaven and Hell concept of Bigg Boss Season 7, the reality show that Salman hosts, and Sajid retorts, “Rajat Aroraa wrote the script four-and-a-half years ago and we shot the Devil scenes in August, four months before Bigg Boss rolled.“

Was it wise to announce the release date before the film rolled? Buzz is, Kick may not be able to keep its Eid deadline? “The actual shooting started only mid-way in January. In the last five months we've worked 18 hours a day and we're almost at the finishing line. There's just a song left. We will open on Eid," Sajid promises, adding, “My Judwaa was his first Eid release.“

So another blockbuster Eid for the star? “Salman is a blockbuster star and will guarantee us an opening. How good I am as a director I'll only know when I see the film with the audience.“ he smiles.
