I was a little awkward doing romantic scenes in The Royals-Chunky Panday

I WAS A LITTLE
AWKWARD
ABOUT
ROMANCING
ON SCREEN:
CHUNKY

Chunky Panday talks about exploring romance on screen, his wife’s reaction to it and dancing live with Ananya Panday on stage recently
Akash Bhatnagar (HINDUSTAN TIMES; July 4, 2025)

Chunky Panday has had two releases in the last two months with The Royals and Detective Sherdil. In the former, he got to explore a romantic track with actor Sakshi Tanwar. The actor admits that while love stories of the senior generation are rarely made on screen, he feels glad to be a part of one.

Talking about developing chemistry with Sakshi, he says, “I was a little awkward doing romantic scenes, not that there were any love making or hot scenes. I am a fan of Sakshi and her work, and when I got this chance, I jumped at it. But there was a bit of awkwardness because romance is not my cup of tea.”

The 62-year-old adds, “I struggled a bit, but the director, DOP and even the producer were women, so there was a lot of female energy on set and they kind of got that romance out of me. But I admit I’m not good at it.”

The actor reveals that while the audience found his romance sweet, his wife, reality TV star Bhavana Pandey had an unexpected reaction: “People told me I looked sweet, but my wife was laughing when she saw me. She couldn’t imagine me being romantic. She is always critical of my work.”

Chunky got a chance to perform live on stage with daughter (actor) Ananya Panday at a recent award show as she paid a tribute to him. And it was a surprise for him. “She started talking about someone who made her laugh since she was a child. So, I thought she was talking maybe (actor) Shah Rukh Khan. Then she burst into a (actor) Neelam song from one of my films, so I thought maybe she’s doing a tribute to Neelam. Then suddenly it turned into all my songs, and I got so excited. For me that was like a lifetime achievement award,” Chunky ends.

(Crisp) Movie Review: DETECTIVE SHERDIL by FENIL SETA

Detective Sherdil, which has released today on Zee5, has a promising storyline. The execution is stylish and a few scenes here and there are amusing and entertaining. The suspense is unpredictable, a must for any murder mystery. However, the beginning is messy while the writing has loopholes. Nothing called a 'post-mortem' exists in the world shown in the film. A few developments are silly while no backstory is provided for Sherdil's association with Natasha (Diana Penty). Diljit Dosanjh, however, is the saving grace of the film. He's usually loud and over-the-top. Here, he's subtle and it works well. Diana Penty is dependable, as always. Boman Irani, Ratna Pathak Shah and Sumeet Vyas are aptly cast. Banita Sandhu leaves a huge mark. Arjun Tanwar makes a confident debut. Chunky Panday does fine but is let down by the writing. Mikhail (Detective Danny) and Kashmira Irani Saxena (Falak) are memorable. All in all, Detective Sherdil is disappointing and worth watching only for Diljit Dosanjh and a few amusing scenes.

I have moved to India now, so you’ll be seeing me a lot more-Banita Sandhu

Banita Sandhu: I have moved to India now, so you’ll be seeing me a lot more

Back in Bollywood with Detective Sherdil, Bridgerton 3 actor Banita Sandhu hopes to feature in more Hindi films after shifting base from the UK

Banita Sandhu was a pleasant surprise as one of the female suitors in the third season of Bridgerton, leaving some of us wondering why we don’t see her more often on screen. Well, the actor — who made her Bollywood debut with Shoojit Sircar’s October (2018) — is back on celluloid with the Hindi film, Detective Sherdil. She stars opposite Diljit Dosanjh, an actor she had long hoped to collaborate with.

“Diljit has done such a wide range of movies, from Udta Punjab [2016] to Amar Singh Chamkila [2024] and his big Punjabi comedies. He is an actor who has range, and I got to work with him in this film. The movie is set in Budapest featuring a wild cast,” she says of the murder mystery directed by Ravi Chhabriya.

In the seven years since her acting debut, Sandhu has featured in a handful of movies, including a Tamil offering in Adithya Varma (2019) and the acclaimed Sardar Udham (2021). She promises that going forward, she will be seen more frequently in Indian projects as she has shifted base from the UK.

“I have moved to India now, so you’ll be seeing me a lot more. The Indian audience has been kind to me and I want to be able to give them great performances. Unfortunately, filming takes time and it takes a while to get a film out,” she says, adding that besides her acting projects, she is developing a script. “I’m currently writing a script on a historical figure, whose story deserves to be told.”
