Singer Shibani A Kashyap on PM Modi’s shoutout to her old video of making New Zealand PM dance to Dama Dam Mast Qalandar
S Farah Rizvi (HINDUSTAN TIMES; July 16, 2026)
Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a light-hearted moment with New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon during his diplomatic trip to Auckland last week. He reminded PM Luxon of his performance with singer Shibani A Kashyap on Dama Dam Mast Qalandar at an event in Auckland in August last year, post which the performance resurfaced online. And Kashyap is ecstatic the video finding a new audience.
The singer made PM Luxon dance with her on stage as she sang during the 2025 Indian Independence Day event in Auckland. “The video, which originally had one million views, is being revisited by everyone, with many calling it Dama Dam 2.0. The view count has crossed 10 million after our PM’s mention,” the 47-year-old singer gushes, adding that she has been bombarded with messages and calls, bringing back the cherished memories of the performance.
“I thought it would be great to invite their PM on stage, and I performed Dama Dam Mast Qalandar, given the song’s universal appeal. It instantly struck a chord, and the rest is history.”
Set to perform in Chicago, USA on August 15, Kashyap reveals that the renewed virality of the performance has increased the song’s demand in her upcoming gigs. “In fact, for my next show, I’ve already received a special request to open the night with this number. Even when my close friends threw a small bash recently, I had to sing a snippet on popular demand,” the singer laughs.

Masaba Gupta, who leads the cabaret song Khumaari in Kesari Chapter 2, on referencing Catherine Zeta-Jones’ act in Chicago
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; April 24, 2025)
A week before her January 2023 wedding, fashion designer and actor Masaba Gupta got a call. It wasn’t the expected congratulatory call; instead, it was casting director Panchami Ghavri requesting her to front a dance number in Kesari Chapter 2. “I thought it was a bizarre request to come my way,” recalls Gupta, whose cabaret song, Khumaari, is a surprise element in the Akshay Kumar-led period drama.
Not many know that in her teenage years, Gupta trained at Shiamak Davar’s institute, and has always been enthusiastic about dancing. Tell her it shows in the song, and she attributes it to director Karan Singh Tyagi’s vision.
“He had this thought [of casting me]. It was earlier meant to be a burlesque number, and then, it became a cabaret song. The fact that I knew I could do justice to it made me say yes. I’ve been a dancer all my life, and always wanted to do something like this. My gut feeling was that I should do it because it was a Dharma film, set in the right backdrop, and it could be something that I could lend myself to,” she says.
Before the shoot, Gupta rehearsed for two-three days with choreographer Vijay Ganguly. She even had a reference in her head. “I was referencing Catherine Zeta-Jones from her performance in [Chicago]. In my head, it was a toned-down performance of Zeta-Jones’ in All That Jazz,” she smiles, adding that while the dance was a breeze, she faced an unexpected hurdle.
“I had bad cramps because of the tight corset, and was curled up in the vanity van between takes. But it sorted itself out thankfully, and everyone was patient with me.”

Saif Ali Khan opens up to Karan Johar on his daughter’s first big decision and why he felt the need to write to her mom, Amrita Singh, on the day he tied the knot with Kareena Kapoor
Natasha Coutinho (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 17, 2018)
On December 7, Sara Ali Khan will finally live out a dream she’s been nurturing since she was four. With her debut film, Abhishek Kapoor’s Kedarnath with Sushant Singh Rajput around the corner, daddy Saif Ali Khan reveled to Karan Johar on his chat show. Pointing to his firstborn, the actor informed that Sara had accompanied him on a world tour and during a concert in Chicago, when Aishwariya Rai was on stage, he noticed her sitting on the floor, peeping through the curtain, watching Ash’s act and the crowd’s reaction, mesmerised. She looked up at him and announced, “This is what I want to do. This is my world, this is where I want to be!” It’s been two decades, but Sara hasn’t changed her mind.
More secrets came tumbling out during this episode of Koffee With Karan which airs on Star World. Saif went on to confide that on the day of the wedding to Kareena Kapoor, he wrote a letter to his ex-wife Amrita Singh stating that both were starting new chapters in their lives and he wished her well. But before he sent it across, the gentlemanly actor ran this note by his soon-to-be bride. Kareena read it and was extremely supportive of the gesture, urging him to send it across.
Recalling this special day in her father’s life, Sara admitted that she had coped well with the changing dynamics within her family because both her parents made it easy for her. The debuante informed that she was already attending her father’s wedding, when she learnt about this note that Saif sent her mother and it made her really happy and want to be there for him even more.
She was quick to add that it was Amrita who had dressed her up for her the D-day and asked her to be by her father’s side during this important time. Upon hearing this, Karan called them “the quintessential, beautiful modern family”.

MID-DAY (May 17, 2016)
Waluscha De Sousa, the model-turned-actress who made her B-Town debut with Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Fan, was apparently detained at the Chicago airport on Thursday and later deported to India due to visa issues.
The actress landed in Mumbai on Sunday night after being detained for over half a day. Says a source, “The airport authorities checked with the actress’ manager, who was also travelling with her, about the purpose of her visit. When they were told that she had come through Exceed Entertainment to Chicago to participate in an event, they detained her as she had a tourist visa and not the mandatory work visa.”
While Waluscha remained unavailable for comment, an official from Exceed Entertainment denied the incident saying, “Nothing of that sort has happened. She has completed her commitment and returned.”
