THE KERALA STORY IS A SURPRISE SUPER-HIT OF THE SEASON; PROVES TO BE A BOON FOR THE EXHIBITORS
The exhibitors were gearing up for a dry May. Except for Fast X, not a single film this month was expected to rake in huge numbers. But last Friday’s release The Kerala Story proved to be a surprise. The film generated a lot of buzz and curiosity due to the controversies. The opening initially seemed in the range of Rs. 3-4 crores but soon, the ticket sales increased. It ended up opening at Rs. 6.75 crores. The collections jumped on Saturday and Sunday to Rs. 10.50 crores and Rs. 16 crores respectively. The collections usually drop on the weekdays, with each passing day. In the case of The Kerala Story, it is the opposite. While it collected Rs. 10 crores on Monday, the Tuesday earnings were Rs. 11 crores. The Wednesday collections are expected to be around Rs. 12 crores. As a result, the first week's collections will be in the range of Rs. 75-78 crores.
All eyes are now on the second weekend as it’ll give an idea of how much the lifetime of the film will be. As of now, it seems like it’ll collect between Rs. 150 and Rs. 200 crores. Crossing the collections of The Kashmir Files (Rs. 246.91 crores) seems unlikely. But nothing can be said for sure at this point.
Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3, meanwhile, has also done well. The word of mouth is positive and its first week collections will be around Rs. 35 crores. It has the potential to cross the Rs. 50 crores mark. It will not enter the Rs. 100 crores club. Yet, it’s a feat considering the recent Marvel films have not got the desired response from the public.
Meanwhile, multiple Hindi and Hollywood films release tomorrow and all of them will face a tough time. The most exciting one seems to be IB 71. It stars Vidyut Jammwal and is also his first production. It is based on an unknown and fascinating chapter of history and is directed by Sankalp Reddy of The Ghazi Attack fame. The buzz is limited and hence, it should open at around Rs. 1 crore.
The other big release is Chatrapathi, a remake of the 2005 Telugu film of the same name, starring Prabhas and directed by S S Rajamouli. This is a rare Hindi remake which stars a South actor, Bellamkonda Sreenivas. The trailer, however, is poor and it looks like a dated film. Also, due to the casting of a South actor, it seems like a dubbed South movie. Its opening will be bad, though it might score in B and C Centres.
Then there are films like Music School, starring Sharman Joshi and Shriya Saran, and A Winter Tale At Shimla and both will sink without a trace. As for Hollywood, two major releases tomorrow are Asterix & Obelix - The Middle Kingdom and Love Again. The latter stars Priyanka Chopra but awareness is negligible. This can affect its box office prospects.

The Telugu star is all set to make his Bollywood debut with Chatrapathi, also starring Nushrratt Bharuccha
BOMBAY TIMES (May 4, 2023)
After making his debut with the 2014 film Alludu Seenu and enjoying a successful career down south, actor Sreenivas Bellamkonda is excited about his foray in Bollywood, with Chatrapathi which hits the theatres on May 12. “The film offers the audience everything they have been longing for, including a good theatrical experience. I can’t wait for them to watch it,” says the actor in a candid chat with us. Excerpts:
The trailer of Chatrapathi released this Tuesday and was received well by the audience. How do you feel?
I’m happy we could show a glimpse of all the blood, sweat, tears and most importantly, all the love that we put in to make this film. It’s a great feeling to see the audience react the way they did to what we have to offer. I was confident before, but now I’m really pumped up to see how the audience will react to the film. They’re in for a ride!
What pushed you to do this project at this point?
I’ve made my mark in Telugu cinema and was ready for something new. When I saw how my films, like Jaya Janaki Nayaka and Kavacham that were dubbed in Hindi had received a huge number of views on YouTube, it excited me. This film is my way of thanking everyone who loved my work because when the perfect script came my way, I just couldn’t say no.
The film is based on S S Rajamouli’s 2005 Prabhas-starrer of the same name. Tell us something about it…
More than a remake I’d call it an adaptation of the story penned by K V Vijayendra Prasad. I play a refugee who comes to Gujarat after losing touch with his mother and stepbrother. The film delves into how local politicians tend to take advantage of displaced immigrants, apart from showcasing how my character revolts for the people, becoming their ‘chatrapathi.’ The bond my character shares with his mother is also very relatable.
Given that Prabhas is considered a pan-India star today, are you worried about comparisons?
Honestly, I’m not. Mujhe sirf pahad chadna, girna, aur phir chadna hi malum hai. I love challenges and that’s exactly what this film offered me. My character is intense, and I loved playing it. The story written in 2005 has been adapted to suit today’s generation, as today’s cinema space is completely different. I believe the audience will see this as a straight-out Hindi film, and not a remake, because that’s how we have treated it.
What was the energy like on sets while shooting for the film? What can the audience look forward to?
My first film ever was with director V V Vinayak, he’s my guru. So, I’m glad my ninth film is with him too and I believe it’s my lucky number (laughs!). Nushrratt Bharuccha is a fantastic co-star, she brought such great energy to the set. In fact, the entire cast did, including Bhagyashree and Sharad Kelkar. Ravi Basrur’s background score and Tanishk Bagchi’s OST will be something to watch out for, so will the VFX in some exciting scenes that I can’t reveal now. I feel grateful that I’m working at a time when the lines between north or south cinema have blurred – a good film is all that matters now. And this one will be a visual spectacle for sure.
Chatrapathi makers are calling it a remake for publicity sake as the names of Rajamouli and Prabhas work well-Sreenivas Bellamkonda

As he leads Hindi remake of Rajamouli’s Chatrapathi, Sreenivas asserts movies should be viewed as Indian offerings instead of being divided on language grounds
Priyanka Sharma (MID-DAY; April 28, 2023)
With Bollywood churning out remakes of south movies, Telugu actor Sreenivas Bellamkonda too appears to be making most of the trend. He is set to make his Hindi debut with Chatrapathi, a remake of S S Rajamouli’s 2005 action film of the same name. Tell him that adaptations have more than their share of naysayers, and Bellamkonda offers a different view.
“You need to find content that will excite the audience. To me, Chatrapathi is not a remake. [The makers] are calling it a remake for publicity sake, because the names of Rajamouli and Prabhas work well. But here, I rewrote everything in Hindi; my dialogues have been changed. I have gone through a more elaborate process than for a brand new film,” states the actor, who is joined by Nushrratt Bharuccha in the film.
The past few years have witnessed a rise in the pan-India popularity of south films. With the mammoth success of Telugu offerings Pushpa: The Rule (2021) and RRR (2022), and Kannada biggies like KGF: Chapter 2 (2022), Hindi movies have been pitted against their south counterparts. Bellamkonda, however, despises the demarcation. How does he feel then that Rajamouli called RRR a Telugu film rather than an Indian film at a pre-Oscar event earlier this year?
“It’s better we forget about this north-south divide because we are all Indian cinema lovers. We are one, and should try to make the best cinema possible. I don’t like calling it Hindi or Telugu cinema. If I had gone out, I would have called it Indian cinema. Maybe he felt a certain way; we don’t know what he went through [at that moment].”

S S Rajamouli’s ode to Deewaar, a commercial success down South, has been adapted for a pan-India audience
MUMBAI MIRROR (November 28, 2020)
Ten years before they wowed the world with the period-drama Bahubali, Prabhas and S S Rajamouli had first collaborated for Chatrapathi in 2005. The Telugu film, an ode to Amitabh Bachchan’s Deewaar, had rewritten box-history down South. And Mirror has now learnt that the film is all set to get a Hindi remake with Bellamkonda Sai Sreenivas aka Sreenu stepping into Prabhas’s shoes. The film is being bankrolled by Dr Jayantilal Gada of Pen Studios.
A huge name in Tollywood, Bellamkonda had made his debut in 2014 with the superhit action entertainer Alludu Seenu, directed by V V Vinayak, who will also be making his Hindi film debut as the director of the remake. Excited about stepping into a new industry with a role earlier played by a superstar, Bellamkonda says, “This is the perfect project for my big debut in Bollywood. It’s a great opportunity to collaborate with Dr Gada and Pen Studios, and to be reunited with my first ever director V V Vinayak sir. Although, taking on a role that Prabhas did is a huge responsibility, but I am glad I did, as it’s the perfect script.”
Dr Jayantilal Gada, MD & Chairman of Pen Studios, is synonymous with successful commercial ventures that are high on content. When Mirror reached out to him, he confirmed the news, revealing that he’s a die-hard Bachchan fan, and though he has the remake rights of Andha Kanoon and Aakhree Raasta, it is his dream to remake Deewaar whose rights are with Rajiv Rai. “Despite all my attempts, he doesn’t want to sell. Chatrapathi is on the lines of Deewaar and I have had the rights with me for 15 years now, much before Baahubali,” he exults.
Explaining his decision to sign on Bellamkonda, Dr Gada points out, “Chatrapathi is a great script. We needed a South star to carry it to Bollywood, and we saw Bellamkonda as the perfect fit. We are very excited about this project, and everything is falling into place at great speed. We have updated the script to match Bollywood sensibilities.” The film rolls in January with a start-to-finish three-month schedule in Mumbai, with a song or two to be shot in Bangalore.
Ace director V V Vinayak, who has delivered blockbusters with all the top stars in Tollywood, is known for his ability to handle remakes well. His directorial Khaidi No 150, which marked the return of megastar Chiranjeevi, was quite the rage. In fact, he has been lauded by master filmmaker Rajamouli himself for elevation of heroism in his films.
After delivering a superhit debut in Tollywood, Bellamkonda will be looking at repeating the success in Bollywood with his director by his side and a Rajamouli film, that chronicles the conflict between two brothers, who choose different paths and are on opposite sides of the law.
