Mohanlal, Kangana Ranaut may come on board to headline the web series, One Nation

As six National Award-winning directors come together to helm One Nation, sources say Mohanlal, Kangana in talks to lead Priyadarshan and Vivek’s segments

Last week, 83 producer Vishnu Vardhan Induri announced that he was bringing six National Award-winning directors together for his next, One Nation. Priyadarshan, Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan, John Mathew Mathan, Manju Borah, Dr Chandraprakash Dwivedi, and Vivek Agnihotri are teaming up to helm the six-episode mini-series that sheds light on India’s unsung heroes.
Only days into the announcement, the filmmakers have begun work on their respective segments. We hear that south superstar Mohanlal, and Kangana Ranaut have been approached to lead the project.
Priyadarshan has collaborated with Mohanlal on over 25 films, including Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham (2021). Naturally then, the superstar was his first choice when the director locked the script of his segment.
A source reveals, “He has given a narration to Mohanlal, who is impressed by the story. But the two have yet to finalize the details. Meanwhile, Vivek has approached Kangana Ranaut for his segment. The two have been keen to collaborate professionally. The series, given its subject, seems like the perfect platform for the duo to come together. It will study events of the past 100 years, from 1925 to the present day, unearthing stories of little-known local heroes who made huge contributions to the country.”
While Induri remains tight-lipped about the cast, he reveals that each segment will be an hour long. “While some stories have been [brought to the table] by the directors, there are some that we have researched,” he says, adding that Mathan of Sarfarosh (1999) fame took some convincing to come on board. “We plan to begin shooting by the second or third quarter of 2023. The OTT release will primarily be in Hindi, and will be dubbed in multiple languages.”
Assamese director Borah is considered one of the country’s finest filmmakers. Induri says that he roped her in as he wanted the project to have a pan-India presence. “The stories come from different parts of the country, and have the core emotion of service to the nation. They can [reflect] any episode — the freedom movement, natural calamities that happened in the country, riots, or national crisis.”

From shooting over 16 months, to creating replica of Exosuit for underwater archaeology scenes, Ram Setu makers on giving shape to the Akshay-starrer

For producer Vikram Malhotra, Ram Setu is more than the sum of storytelling, budgets and visual effects. “It is about heart and vision,” he says. Abhishek Sharma’s directorial venture sees Akshay Kumar as archaeologist Dr Aryan Kulshrestha who races against time to prove the existence of the Ram Setu.
Given the subject, the makers knew that detailed research would be key to telling the story. Malhotra says, “[We] consulted Dr Pushkar Bhatnagar’s book, Dating The Era Of Lord Ram, which is considered an authority on astrological understanding related to the Ramayana. Abhishek and team engaged with experts in the fields of archaeology, sonar imaging, carbon dating, geology, and marine exploration. The research team also studied ancient and modern history maps, including those housed in the museum at Thanjavur that have shed light on how the Ram Setu was depicted and how its name was changed to Adam’s Bridge under the British [rule].”
While Sharma wielded the directorial baton for the action adventure, also starring Jacqueline Fernandez and Nushrratt Bharuccha, Dr Chandraprakash Dwivedi was brought in as the creative producer. “Dr Dwivedi played an important part in bridging the areas of history and spirituality with his extensive research over decades,” says the producer.
Announced in November 2020, the project went on floors in March 2021. “The film was shot over almost 16 months, and then the elaborate process of perfecting the VFX took over.”
For the director, the film was born from a single concern: “Through their imaging, NASA [National Aeronautics and Space Administration] showed that there is a bridge that exists. But no in-depth expedition has ever been commissioned underwater on Ram Setu,” he states.
Through the movie, Sharma wanted to explore the subject further. “Ram Setu, the film, is a convergence of science, history, geography and the Ramayana. In the film, we have shown — in a way that it appeals to the audience — how carbon dating is done on rocks and fossils under the sea.”
Authenticity was their top priority as they showed Kumar’s archaeologist character undertaking this ambitious task. “Akshay sir learnt everything patiently from the geologists and archaeologists who were with us at our filming locations. We’d consult them during the shoot. We first tried to use a real Exosuit [a specialised suit that enables archaeologists to stay underwater for long]. But since it is difficult to wear one and shoot, we had a replica made.”

Mumbai: Veteran actor Arun Bali, whose stature as an artiste matched his towering 6.4ft height, died at his Jogeshwari residence on Friday.
He was 79. His son Ankush said his father was suffering from myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune disease, for which he was admitted to hospital early this year.
Bali’s latest film, ironically titled Goodbye, released on Friday, hours after he passed away at 4:30am. The benign actor is well remembered for his role in 3 Idiots, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Saugandh, Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Khalnayak, Satya, Hey Ram, 3 Idiots, Ready, Barfi, Manmarziyaan, Kedarnath, Samrat Prithviraj and recently Laal Singh Chaddha.
Bali made his acting debut with filmmaker Lekh Tandon’s TV show Doosra Keval as Shah Rukh Khan’s uncle and went on to work in Chanakya, Swabhimaan, Des Mein Nikla Hoga Chand, Kumkum: Ek Pyara Sa Bandhan and POW: Bandi Yuddh Ke.
He is survived by four sons and four daughters. The last rites will be performed at Jogeshwari on Saturday.
Ankush said his father passed away at his residence around 4:30am. “He had mood swings for two-three days. He told the caretaker he wanted to go to the washroom, and after coming out, he told him he wanted to sit down. He never got up,” he said.

The veteran actor’s son Ankush said his father was suffering from Myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune disease caused by communication failure between nerves and muscles, for which he was admitted to a hospital early this year.
Ankush said his father was responding well to the treatment but passed away at around 4:30 am. “My father was suffering from Myasthenia gravis. He had mood swings for two-three days. He told the caretaker he wanted to go to the washroom and after coming out he told him he wanted to sit down and he never got up then (sic),” Ankush said.

Remembering the actor, filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker said, “Arun Bali ji was a giant of an actor. It was a memorable experience of working with him in Panipat, where he portrayed Maharaja Baba Ala Singh, the King of Patiala. I was worried that Arun ji might say no to the role because of the brief screen appearance, but he consented immediately. Even at his age, Arun ji was most punctual and disciplined. He made sure he knew all his lines before he came in front of the camera, and he would get it right in the first take itself. I will cherish the to the family.”

Being remembered even in a cameo — that is the impact Arun Bikramjit Bali had with his performances. The senior actor, 79, who often played the doting grandfather on screen, passed away Friday morning. He was hospitalised earlier this year, after being diagnosed for Myasthenia Gravis — a rare muscular disease that causes a communication failure between the nerves and the muscles.
Friends since 1989, director Dr Chandraprakash Dwivedi remembers meeting Bali for the first time when he made his directorial debut with the historical TV series, Chanakya, where the senior actor played the role of King Porus. “I was sitting by the window in my office when I saw Bali saab coming up to meet me. I told my assistant, ‘Here comes my Porus’. He had a majestic persona.”
After beginning his innings in acting with director Lekh Tandon’s Doosra Kewal (1989), Bali went on to do shows, including Dekh Bhai Dekh (1993), The Great Maratha (1994), Shaktimaan (1997), Swabhimaan (1995) and POW (Bandi Yudh Ke).
His “jovial nature and hospitality” moved Dwivedi who was new to Delhi then. “His family loved hosting people at their home,” says the director, who often rode pillion while exploring the nooks and corners of the capital. Bali was also part of Dwivedi’s Samrat Prithviraj.
“During the shoot of the film, I could sense that he was slowing down. I was aware that it was not the age, but the illness catching up with him. One of the best aspects about Bali saab was that in one meeting, anyone could become a part of his family. He was my elder brother and I will miss him deeply,” says the filmmaker.
Laal Singh Chaddha director Advait Chandan remembers Bali as a ball of “energy and enthusiasm”, especially during a scene when he has to refuse golgappas offered by Aamir Khan’s character. “He had the energy of a young boy on the set, and would constantly come up with suggestions and improvisations. Arun ji told me, in reality, he would never ignore a sweet person offering golgappas to him on a train.”
For Umesh Shukla, Bali was the balance between depicting right and wrong for his film OMG Oh My God (2012). “We wanted to show that while there are fake godmen, the world also has good-hearted sadhus. Bali ji played that role with a lot of conviction. To play a positive part against negative characters essayed by actors like Mithun Chakraborty and still being remembered for his strong performance is [a huge deal],” reminisced Shukla.
Bali was also seen in movies like Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman (1992), Khalnayak (1993), Satya (1996), 3 Idiots (2009), PK (2014), Manmarziyaan (2018), Kedarnath (2018), and Panipat (2019).

Actor Arun Bali, a popular name in the film and television world, died at the age of 79 on Friday in Mumbai. He was known for his roles in shows such as Swabhimaan, Kumkum — Ek Pyara Sa Bandhan and Chanakya, and he featured in most of filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani’s movies, such as Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006), 3 Idiots (2009), PK (2014) and the upcoming Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Dunki.
He had been diagnosed with myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune condition marked by a breakdown in nerve-muscle communication, earlier this year. His son, Ankush Bali, said that his dad was benefiting from the medication, but passed away at around 4.30am. “He told the caretaker he wanted to go to the washroom, and after coming out, he told him he wanted to sit down, and he never got up then,” he told PTI.
For director Chandraprakash Dwivedi and actor Hussain Kuwajerwala, the two things they associate with the late actor Arun Bali, who died at 79, are his jovial nature and big heart. Dwivedi says his association with him was not just limited to the 1991 show, Chanakya. He remembers the time when Bali insisted that he should not stay in a hotel in Delhi but in his own house.
“I was searching for actors then for the show, and would go to the National School of Drama (NSD). I had a brief meeting with him then, and when he got to know that I was staying in a hotel in Janpath, he got his scooter and said, ‘Chalo mere saath, tum mere ghar rahoge’. He lived with his wife, Prakash ji. She was like a mother to me,” he shares.
Dwivedi continues, “I couldn’t stand the winters, hum ek hi razaai mein baithte the. His house was like a second home for me and for a lot of actors from Mumbai.”
On his scooter, Bali would take the director to meet actors who were in Delhi. “I met Shah Rukh Khan for the first time through him, when he was shooting for his TV show. A young man was walking towards us and Arun ji said, ‘Yeh ladka Shah Rukh Khan hai’,” Dwivedi recalls.
Kuwajerwala worked with him in the popular show Kumkum — Ek Pyara Sa Bandhan. The actor says everyone from the show would call him dada ji off-screen too. “We were in touch with him, but not on a regular basis. We will definitely miss that Apart from all the guidance he has given us through the working years of our life. We will miss him,” he gets emotional.

The director of Samrat Prithviraj says Akshay Kumar was not the reason for the film not working

It’s not the first time that an actor has worn a fake moustache on screen; There was a disclaimer right in the beginning of the film; A group wanted to target actor Akshay Kumar — Director Chandraprakash Dwivedi makes all this clear as he opens up to us on every criticism directed towards his recent film, Samrat Prithviraj.
Commenting on how some reports have projected his recent remarks that the audience boycotted the film due to things Kumar did in the past, Dwivedi tells us, “Two days after the release of the film, I spoke to a lot of people. And I maintained that my faith in Akshay Kumar remains unshakeable. I have done two more upcoming films with him, Ram Setu and OMG Oh My God 2. I feel that my words are being twisted.” He further adds that he has no complaints with the film’s producer, Aditya Chopra either.
Dwivedi claims a section of people wanted to target Kumar, and hence the film didn’t do well at the box office. Admitting he is disappointed at the reception the film got, he says, “There’s a section of people who thinks they have to correct everything! Unhe iss baat se takleef hai ki film mein log tilak kyun laga rahe hain, auratein bindi kyun nahin laga rahi hain. But the visual ornaments which we see women wearing in pictures, that’s a European tradition! These people got annoyed when I tried to set the record straight.”
For people who commented on the language used in the film, Dwivedi says, “Jis bhaasha ko log ‘Urduwood’ ki bhaasha keh rahe hain, voh bhaasha issi desh mein janmi hai. We have translated Prithviraj Raso (a Braj language epic poem about the life of Prithviraj Chauhan), and the author himself writes in that. I wasn’t doing anything different. I was surprised that such a debate arose even.”
He says he always maintained that the film was based on Prithviraj Raso, of which different versions exist. “I said it right in the beginning that it’s based on Raso. Whether Prithviraj Raso is a historical document or not is a debate. A section of historians believe it is, while some say it is not.”
And on the stories that claim Chopra is pinning the performance of Samrat Prithviraj on Kumar’s lack of dedication, like not caring to grow an actual moustache, Dwivedi says, “Aditya (Chopra) has never said this. Is it happening for the first time that an actor has worn a fake moustache? On June 2, I, Aditya and Akshay were together, and Aditya categorically told me that he is happy with the film. He will never say that I failed in my duty. Same is true for Akshay.”

Filmmaker Chandraprakash Dwivedi has finally reacted to audiences’ response towards his recent film Samrat Prithviraj. He told Film Companion, “When Akshay (Kumar, who played the lead role) sir had asked his son about Prithviraj Chauhan, he replied that he had no knowledge about who that was. That was Akshay’s trigger point, where he started inquiring why we never teach what we may call ‘Hindu history’. Now this is what he thinks; it isn’t my opinion nor is it the opinion of my producers. He expressed this opinion on a show, and so people started to think Samrat Prithviraj was a historical film. But he never said this was a historical film. People got his message mixed up.”
Dwivedi went on to add, “It’s not like you don’t have the right to reject an actor, but he’s been working for 30 years, so you know his capabilities. Akshay Kumar has done the role to the best of his potential. He is not the first actor whose performance the audience hasn’t liked, but to boycott him for his acting as Prithviraj makes no sense. Boycotting his film due to things he has done in the past, such as promoting paan masala or saying that one shouldn’t give Lord Shiva milk, makes no sense because these matters have nothing to do with the movie at all.”

Stating that Dutt’s “unique personality” made him an apt choice to play Kaka Kanha, Samrat Prithviraj director on how the actor approached the intense role

When doing the groundwork for Samrat Prithviraj, it was the casting of Kaka Kanha that puzzled director Chandraprakash Dwivedi. The filmmaker’s extensive research had indicated that Kaka Kanha was a great warrior like nephew Prithviraj Chauhan, but not without his share of idiosyncrasies. The actor, playing the warrior, would also have to hold his own in front of Akshay Kumar who was chosen for the titular role.
Dwivedi believed Sanjay Dutt fulfilled the two conditions. “The role demanded a unique personality with a sense of humour. Sanjay Dutt has both the qualities,” says the director.
Dutt’s character is seen wearing a blindfold in the film. Legend has it that following an incident, Kaka Kanha vowed to behead anyone who sported a moustache, after which Prithviraj’s father Someshwar Chauhan convinced him to always wear a blindfold. “Kaka Kanha was deeply attached to Samrat Prithviraj. Their bond is an important part of the film,” says Dwivedi.
For Dutt, the period drama — also starring Manushi Chhillar and Sonu Sood — was a change of pace after the heavy-duty actioner, KGF - Chapter 2. The director remembers how the actor was thrilled to breathe life into the character.
“He was enthusiastic about sporting the distinct look, wearing the outfit and the armour. In fact, he had anticipated the armour to be heavier. But when he actually put it on, Sanjay was happy to notice that it was much lighter. Since he had previously trained in horse-riding and sword-fighting, he was comfortable. He has done many action films, so it came naturally to him.”
One would imagine that Dutt had his own method to get into the headspace of the warrior. But Dwivedi surprises us when he says, “Right before a challenging scene, Sanjay used to ensure that the mood was light. He used to call two people from the stunt team, who would show him some funny videos. He used to have a hearty laugh, so that he was in a good mood before [enacting] a serious scene.”

From using prosthetics to sport bald look, to reading up on Chand Bardai, Sonu discusses slipping into learned poet’s role for Prithviraj

When director Chandraprakash Dwivedi decided to make Prithviraj, he didn’t have to look further than Chand Bardai’s epic poem, Prithviraj Raso, for inspiration (Film based on medieval epic Prithviraj Raso, Apr 23). Bardai, said to be a poet in Prithviraj Chauhan’s court, had developed what is considered a comprehensive retelling of the king’s life. For his big-screen offering, the director chose Sonu Sood to play the learned poet to Akshay Kumar’s warrior king. Sood, who was familiar with Bardai’s work, thoroughly enjoyed going back in time to the 12th century.
The actor says, “I had heard stories of Chand Bardai and Prithviraj Chauhan from my mother, who was a professor of history and English literature. So, playing this character was special for me. My director shared a lot of literature about Chand Bardai, which helped my prep.”
Looking the part of the poet was a tricky and exhausting affair. The actor says he had to use prosthetics to sport a bald avatar, in keeping with his character. “I remember getting ready used to be a [daunting] task due to the prosthetics. I used to start getting ready from 3 am, so that I could be ready for the shot at 8 am. Once I would get into the outfit, my body language used to change. I would start feeling like the character,” says Sood.
He adds that he had to pick up Rajasthani dialect before the movie rolled. “In a period film, everything needs to be right — from the outfits to the diction. I have done many historical dramas, and it was exciting to portray [a new] character.”

Prithviraj director breaks down how art design team recreated 12th century Delhi, Ajmer and Kannauj for Akshay’s period drama

The biggest challenge of making a period drama is recreating the era it is set in. The makers of Prithviraj faced the same hurdle as they set out to offer a retelling of the 12th century warrior king. With the Akshay Kumar-starrer depicting Prithviraj’s reign as he first ruled out of Ajmer and subsequently Delhi, and his love story with Princess Sanyogita of Kannauj, the production design team had to build lavish sets replicating the three cities.
Art designers Subrata Chakraborty and Amit Ray researched the architectural style of the period before erecting elaborate sets in Madh Island, Dahisar and YRF Studios in Andheri.
It is heard that producer Aditya Chopra assigned a budget of over Rs 25 crore for set design. Director Chandraprakash Dwivedi is satisfied with the result.
“Aditya Chopra took on the Herculean task to recreate Delhi, Ajmer and Kannauj. Real marble was used to build the cities, and 900 workers toiled hard for about eight months to build these gigantic sets,” he says. Kumar adds, “It was a task to make this film a visual delight for the audiences. We wanted people to see how magnificent the cities looked during [his reign].”

When it comes to action, there is little that Akshay Kumar can’t do. He has been one of the most enduring action stars of Bollywood, with a career spanning three decades. With Prithviraj, the superstar saw the potential of pushing the envelope. Dr Chandraprakash Dwivedi’s directorial venture, which focuses on the mighty king’s war against the Muhammad of Ghor, demanded elaborate fight sequences that had to be designed keeping in mind the warfare techniques of the era.
Slipping into the armour and practicing sword-fighting left Kumar excited. “I was like a kid in a candy store when I realised the scale of action that I will get to perform,” grins the actor. “Prithviraj is mounted on a [lavish] scale, and action plays an integral part in heightening the entertainment quotient of the film. The big-screen extravaganza will give the audience numerous highs, given how Samrat Prithviraj Chauhan took on the responsibility of protecting the country and its people from the merciless invader, Muhammad of Ghor.”
Dwivedi roped in action directors Parvez Shaikh and Franz Spillhaus to design the mammoth war sequences. From choreographing the on-screen armies consisting of 500-odd people to filming in the arid deserts of Rajasthan, the stunt directors had a difficult task at hand. Kumar, who hasn’t featured in many historical dramas, admits that he thoroughly enjoyed revisiting the warfare of a bygone era.
“Doing action gives me a high. It was tough to pull off these elaborate war sequences, wearing heavy armour in the sweltering heat, but I knew that these scenes would look spectacular on the big screen. Prithviraj is a film that’s high on patriotism, given the king’s valour. It needed to be presented in a way that would make people gasp with excitement, and I think we have achieved it.” The period drama also stars Sanjay Dutt, Sonu Sood and debutante Manushi Chhillar.

Leading man Akshay and director Dwivedi discuss how authenticity was key as the team created era-appropriate outfits and turbans for Prithviraj

Making a historical drama can be daunting. Dr Chandraprakash Dwivedi knew that all too well as he teamed up with Akshay Kumar for Prithviraj, a retelling of the warrior king who fought valiantly against Muhammad of Ghor. Authenticity is the foundation of any period piece. The director left no stone unturned to recreate the 12th century Chahamana dynasty — from building sets of palaces that resembled the period’s architectural style, to creating era-appropriate outfits.
“Detailing was key to making a film like Prithviraj. For instance, 500 different turbans were created for the film. All these were authentic replications of the kinds of turbans worn by kings, masses, and people of various professions at that time. We had an expert on turban styling, who would oversee the process on the set,” says Dwivedi.
Soon after the script was locked, the filmmaker brought costume designer Sanjeev Raj Singh on board. The designer and his team researched about the garments, colours and fabrics used at the time before creating the sartorial palette. The director adds, “Over 50,000 costumes were hand-made by the costume designer who, along with his team, was specially flown in from Rajasthan. He stayed in Mumbai and made these outfits from scratch. I’m glad I had a producer like Aditya Chopra who believed in my vision for the film.”
The June 3 offering — also starring Sanjay Dutt, Sonu Sood and debutante Manushi Chhillar — is arguably one of Kumar’s biggest releases in recent times. The leading man is evidently impressed as much with the movie’s grand scale as with the intricate detailing that went into its making.
The superstar says, “Rarely do films take this much effort, [with directors] embarking upon such monumental tasks. Every element of our film has been dealt with utmost sincerity, authenticity and reverence. There are few scripts that speak to you from the word go. For Akshay Kumar, Prithviraj was one of those rare finds. The superstar, who has a penchant for stories that acquaint the audiences with lesser-known chapters of India’s history, says the life of the warrior king — who fought valiantly against the Muhammad of Ghor — deserves a big-screen retelling.
“When I was narrated the film, I had goosebumps throughout the [sitting]. I immediately said yes to the project because the script blew me away. It brings together history, patriotism, portrayal of the values that we should live by, and also tells a story of love that is rare to find,” says Kumar.
Handling a historical drama is not easy. The actor believes that Dr Chandraprakash Dwivedi is the right person to do justice to the subject. As the trailer drops online today, Kumar feels the film’s grand scale makes it a big-screen entertainer. “The film has a huge scale that a historical like this deserves. It is an honour to portray someone who has done so much for the India that we know.”
The drama sees former Miss World Manushi Chhillar opposite the superstar.

As Akshay Kumar steps into the warrior king’s shoes for Chandraprakash Dwivedi’s Prithviraj, actor-director duo on how they converted YRF floor into a research wing to accommodate literature and artefacts

Akshay Kumar’s next is arguably one of his most ambitious ventures in recent times. With Prithviraj, the superstar intends to reacquaint the audience with the legendary warrior king, Prithviraj Chauhan, who valiantly fought the Muhammad of Ghor in the second battle of Tarain in 1192. Research is crucial in a historical drama, and director Dr Chandraprakash Dwivedi — who has dedicated 18 years to the subject — wanted to bring an authentic retelling to the big screen.
“The first step to attempt such an extravagant historical movie is always research, and we wanted to be absolutely accurate. I had personally worked on the script from 2004 to 2019, updating it every year. Naturally, I had a lot of material that could be used as reference points to write the film’s final draft. There were several books, a variety of costumes that were being used as references, armour and weapons that were brought into the studio before the filming started,” recounts the filmmaker.
When producer Aditya Chopra noticed that the team had built an expansive archive by way of literature as well as artefacts, he converted an entire floor of the Yash Raj Films Studios in Andheri into a research wing. Dwivedi adds, “We kept the research bay fully operational till the last day of shoot. Now, we are exploring a plan to showcase the research work to people.”
Of late, Kumar has fronted a few period dramas, be it Kesari (2019) or Gold (2018), thus bringing India’s unheard stories to celluloid. Applauding the director for his extensive research, the actor says, “When I was narrated the film by Dr saab, I was taken aback by the amount of research that he did while writing this film. Writing and directing a historical film is not easy. He waited for 18 years, nurturing and making Prithviraj the most glorious retelling of the Samrat’s life. I hope it becomes the most authentic reference point for the king’s life.”
The period drama also stars Sanjay Dutt, Sonu Sood and former Miss World Manushi Chhillar.

From reading up on 12th century costumes to spending months on final research, director traces Prithviraj’s journey from paper to screen

From Chanakya (1991) to Mrityunjay (1996), Dr Chandraprakash Dwivedi has a knack for delving deep into ancient Indian history to pay homage to its myriad heroes. His next, Prithviraj, which sees Akshay Kumar as the leader of the Chahamana dynasty, promises to be no different. The director says that bringing the story of the 12th century warrior king to the big screen has been his long-cherished dream.
“Prithviraj is my dream project. I have lived with this story for 18 years. It’s a script that I have nurtured for a long time because of the extensive research work that it [demanded] before I even attempted to make a film. To be precise, the film’s final research took about six months for me to be fully satisfied that every fact was checked multiple times,” he states.
Authenticity is key to any historical drama. Dwivedi spent years on the research, reading countless books that would help him gain knowledge of the costumes, language and architecture prevalent at the time. From Roshen Alkazi’s Ancient and Medieval Indian Costume, to Pushpa Mathur’s Costumes of the Rulers of Mewar, to Naveen Patnaik’s A Desert Kingdom, Dwivedi devoured the books before he began building the film’s universe.
The story is reportedly based on an epic titled Prithviraj Raso, written by the poet, Chand Bardai. The director elaborates, “I read many books on his life to ensure that we are doing justice to Samrat Prithviraj Chauhan in our film. Today, I’m deeply satisfied as a writer and filmmaker that I took this time before I could realise my dream. I hope our film is a fitting tribute to Prithviraj’s valour and magnanimous way of life.”
The historical drama also stars Sanjay Dutt, Sonu Sood and marks the Bollywood debut of former Miss World Manushi Chhillar.

With Prithviraj, Dr Chandraprakash Dwivedi is attempting his most ambitious venture. Like his previous acclaimed offerings Chanakya, Pinjar (2003) and Mohalla Assi (2018) that were based on books, the upcoming Akshay Kumar-starrer is inspired by a famous literary work. “Prithviraj is based mainly on medieval literature, an epic titled Prithviraj Raso written by the poet, Chand Bardai. Apart from a couple of versions of Raso, there are many other literary works on Prithviraj’s life and some commentaries on Raso,” says the filmmaker, who has taken on the responsibility of introducing the audience to warrior king Prithviraj Chauhan. The ruler of the Chahamana dynasty had valiantly foiled the early invasions of Muhammad of Ghor before being defeated in the second battle of Tarain in 1192.
Recreating the 12th century world was no mean feat as the period piece went on floors in Jaipur in November 2019, and was subsequently shot in Mumbai. To add to that, the historical drama was among the many films affected by the Coronavirus lockdown last year. But Dwivedi was not bogged down by these obstacles; instead, he was only too happy to give shape to his dream project, aided by months of research. “I got involved in exhaustive research as I enjoy the process of entering the unknown and unexplored world of the great heroes of India. It is like having a dialogue with these characters in their times. I am sure most writers have experienced this strange phenomenon. [For this project too], I studied the art, archaeology, costumes, material culture and available historical data [so that I could accurately] recreate the era and its personalities.”
The film, which is eyeing a Diwali 2021 release, marks the Bollywood debut of former Miss World Manushi Chhillar, who plays the role of Chauhan’s wife Sanyogita.

After wrapping up Bachchan Pandey, Akshay Kumar is all set to start shoot for his next, Ram Setu. And HT has exclusively learnt that the actor, along with director Abhishek Sharma and creative producer Dr Chandraprakash Dwivedi, will fly to Ayodhya on March 18 to give the mahurat shot of the film from Ram Janmabhoomi.
While Kumar is away for a family vacation in Maldives, the film’s director tells us that the shoot is spread across multiple schedules over the next few months and 80% of the film will be shot in Mumbai.
Sharma also reveals that the actor will be seen in a new avatar. “Akshay sir plays an archaeologist and his look and character is inspired by several Indian and international professional archaeologists who work in the field,” he says, adding that the leading ladies — Jacqueline Fernandez and Nushrratt Bharuccha — play “strong, independent women” and their looks are being kept under wraps for now.
Interestingly, it was Dwivedi who came up with the idea of starting the Ram Setu journey in Ayodhya. “I suggested to Akshay that we should launch the production schedule with blessings from the holy temple of Lord Ram,” he says.
For Sharma, the journey of Ram Setu started back in 2007 when he “first read newspaper coverage about a court case related to a project to build a shipping canal in the shallow straits between India and Sri Lanka” and he found that to be an opportunity “to explore the truth behind an Indian legend.”
Sharma thanks Dwivedi for guiding the team in the right direction with the research process. “The idea was to gain a comprehensive understanding on the subject and create a film on this true story,” he says.
Set to embark on this journey, producer Vikram Malhotra asserts there’ll be “strict safety protocols in place.” He adds, “Akshay as well as Abundantia Entertainment have completed several productions during the pandemic. There’s enough learning to manage with controlled Coronavirus risks.”
Kumar rounds it off by saying, “Ram Setu is a bridge between generations — past, present and future.”

With the country in its fourth phase of Coronavirus lockdown, filmmakers have given up hope of resuming shoot before the monsoon. mid-day has learnt that the makers of Akshay Kumar's period drama, Prithviraj, have decided to dismantle an expansive set that was constructed in Dahisar. The outdoor set-up housed a palace (right) that was designed in keeping with the architectural style of the 12th century, and an arena where the superstar was to film a war sequence."The head honchos of Yash Raj Films had kept the set standing over the past two months, hoping that the situation would improve soon. However, with the rains only weeks away, it doesn't seem feasible to retain the set any longer. The makers are currently procuring necessary permission to have it pulled down. Akshay had filmed a major portion of the Chandraprakash Dwivedi-directed drama at the Dahisar set before the lockdown was announced, but some crucial sequences have yet to be shot," reveals a source. About 60 per cent of the period piece, based on the ruler of the Chahamana dynasty, is complete.
The Yash Raj Films' spokesperson confirmed the news, saying, "This information is accurate. The set will now be put up indoors once shooting resumes."
Deja Vu: Karni Sena disrupts Prithviraj shoot in Jaipur, demands to read script

Filmmaker Chandraprakash Dwivedi’s historical drama, titled Prithviraj, has come on the radar of Sri Rajput Karni Sena. Dwivedi is currently shooting for the film in Jaipur’s outskirts. Akshay Kumar is playing the lead role in the movie, which is based on the famous Rajput warrior Prithviraj Chauhan. Akshay shot few scenes before Holi and returned to Mumbai.The shooting, which is currently taking place in Gopalgarh village in Jamwa Ramgarh tehsil near Jaipur, came to a halt when more than 100 members of Karni Sena reached the set on Saturday afternoon. They were led by Mahipal Singh Makrana, national president of the outfit. Makrana met Dwivedi and demanded to read the script of the film, threatening to stop the shoot otherwise.
Makrana says, “We went to meet Dwivedi to ensure that they don’t put our warrior in a bad light. We don’t want to vandalise the set or cause harm to anyone. We want the makers to share the script with us. We have a panel of experts and historians who will go through the script before the film is shot. Until we are satisfied we will not let the shooting happen — neither in Rajasthan nor in any part of the country. We want to ensure that the makers don’t distort facts for the purpose of entertainment. Dwivedi has assured us (of cooperation) and we will contact them in a day or two.” Though the shooting was stopped for a while, it later resumed.

The gorgeous Miss World 2017 Manushi Chhillar has been one of the most soughtafter new faces in Bollywood, ever since she won the coveted crown at the international pageant, which was held in Sanya, China. Rumours of her big Bollywood debut have been doing the rounds for a while, and now, here’s the real story. One of India’s most eminent production houses, Yash Raj Films, has signed Manushi as the leading lady of their historical film Prithviraj, based on the life and heroism of the fearless and mighty King Prithviraj Chauhan. It stars superstar Akshay Kumar in and as Prithviraj, and Manushi will play the role of the gorgeous Sanyogita, the love of the king’s life.
The 22-year-old stunner, who was discovered during the Femina Miss India pageant (2017), is getting the grandest launch any newcomer has seen in recent times. And we couldn’t be prouder! After being crowned Femina Miss India 2017, Manushi went on to win the Miss World title by wowing everyone with her beauty, charm and intelligence. She brought home the crown after 17 years.
Manushi’s Bollywood debut is being directed by Dr Chandraprakash Dwivedi, who helmed the television epic show, Chanakya. The filmmaker also won a lot of critical-acclaim and awards for his film Pinjar (2003). Talking about his new and ambitious project that will release on Diwali 2020, Dwivedi says, “We auditioned a lot of young, fresh faces for the role because we were looking for a stunningly gorgeous Indian heroine. While Sanyogita was an incredibly beautiful person, she was also a strong and confident girl. We were looking for someone who could match the magnetic persona of Sanyogita and we found that in Manushi. She auditioned for the role a couple of times, because we wanted to be sure about the casting. She nailed the audition each time. She has been rehearsing six days a week since then and is being thoroughly groomed for the last nine months by YRF.”
The production house has previously discovered talented actors like Ranveer Singh, Anushka Sharma and others, who have gone on to become stars in their own right. They have also signed on Manushi as their talent and will look after her film assignments and brand deals.
Thrilled about her dream debut, Manushi tells us, “It is a huge honour to have been chosen by a production house like Yash Raj Films as their heroine. I’m thrilled about the learnings that I will have through this journey. My life, so far, has really been a fairy tale. From being discovered by the biggest media organisation, The Times of India, to being nurtured by them in my journey to win the Miss India title, then, winning the Miss World title, and now, getting such a big project as my debut film, it’s like a new, exciting chapter of my life.”

For quite some time now, speculations have been rife that former Miss World Manushi Chhillar is gearing up for her Bollywood debut. According to trade buzz, she had landed a plum project and was being groomed for her big break. However, contrary to popular perception, it isn’t opposite Ranveer Singh.
Now, we have learnt that the erstwhile beauty queen will foray into Bollywood as Akshay Kumar’s leading lady in a Yash Raj Films production. Apparently, Manushi will play Sanyukta to AK’s Prithiviraj Chauhan in the mega-budget extravaganza, which will be helmed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi. According to a source, “Everything is being kept hush-hush for now and the announcement will be made at the right time. Presently, Manushi is undergoing all the necessary training for her debut.”
Interestingly, the leggy lass was offered the Hindi remake of the Telugu hit RX 100 opposite Suniel Shetty’s son Ahan, which is the latter’s launch pad. “However, Manushi felt that venturing into Bollywood with another newcomer would be too much of a pressure. She felt making her debut opposite an established star would be a better bet,” adds our source.
