CHAL MERA PUTT 2 has become the biggest Punjabi grosser ever as it crossed the $3.63 million of CHAL MERA PUTT. The film was expected to be the top Punjabi film but that was in March 2020 when conditions were more normal as its predecessor was hugely successful and biggest film overseas prior to CHAL MERA PUTT 2.
Now this film has done it post the pandemic with limited collections in Australia and New Zealand. Whatever it did in these markets was before the pandemic. The film is easily going past the $4 million mark and maybe even $4.50 million. It means the potential of a blockbuster Punjabi film is $5 million plus in Overseas as this would have got there if conditions were normal. In Canada, it will cross the $2 million mark which has only been done by 3 IDIOTS, PK and DANGAL. This makes it the biggest Punjabi film ever.
In UK it stands in second place as it beats all other films in just ten days though it might not make it to number one as CHAAR SAHIBZAADE was a phenomena in the United Kingdom in 2014. The worldwide business of the film will be around 50 crore making it the third Punjabi film to hit 50 crore worldwide.
The top Punjabi films of all time in Overseas are as follows.
1. Chal Mera Putt 2 - $3,650,000 apprx (10 days)
2. Chal Mera Putt - $3,630,000
3. Chaar Sahibzaade - $3,570,000
4. Ardaas Karaan - $2,700,000
5. Shadaa - $2,650,000

There will be another Punjabi film CHAL MERA PUTT 2 that will take a strong opening this week. The market in Punjab got going with PUAADA and even BELLBOTTOM had healthy collections in the first weekend. Now its likely CHAL MERA PUTT 2 will have even better collections as there are more properties in operation and the makers are paying print costs and agreeing to the terms of non multiplex chains and single screens.
CHAL MERA PUTT 2 released just before the lockdown and was doing strong business as it collected almost 3 crore nett in just 2 proper full days and another day when most properties shut up shop. The makers have waited since March 2020 to release in the theatres and it is sure to see results.
The barometer chain for business of Punjabi films, PVR, sold 1492 tickets as per close of business on Tuesday. PUAADA at the same time was 1095 though PVR has more operational properties now including very key properties like PVR Mohali and PVR Pavilion in Ludhiana which between them have added 315 tickets alone.
In Chandigarh last week BELLBOTTOM collected 6.87 lakh on day one and CHAL MERA PUTT 2 should easily surpass the 10 lakh nett mark. The film can surpass the 75 lakh nett mark in East Punjab on release which would be a huge number. The film does have an issue with censors as the makers shot extra footage to make the film fresher but the censors in India did not pass as the film has Pakistani artistes. Sadly these things exist for cinema and sport only in India while many other trade dealings continue with Pakistan as normal.
The Overseas will see the new film and collections will be excellent with out performance in UK pretty much certain. The Pakistani artsites here are a huge plus as the Pakistan audience will come out for this Indian Punjabi film. The film is getting an advance in certain London cinemas where most Punjabi films will not even release and if they do it will be a show here or there while this film gets many shows and even the biggest screens. Australia and New Zealand will be a huge loss due to Coronavirus lockdown.
The key reason for the turnout for PUAADA and CHAL MERA PUTT 2 as soon as cinemas opened is that both are starcast mass entertainers. Eventually where the numbers go depend on how good a film is but if you offer entertainment with some face value then the public is always going to give it a chance.

There was a cautious opening of cinemas in a couple of countries last week where Hindi films are screened. There have been markets like South Korea and Norway which have have had some cinemas open through the Coronavirus lockdown but there were no Hindi films being screened in these places.
Last week saw cinemas opening in Australia and UAE and while Australia did not screen any Hindi films there was a Hindi release in UAE. BAAGHI 3 became the first Hindi film to see any collections from anywhere after almost 3 months. The film collected around $2000 from 15 screens in one week which is not much but at least a Hindi film has been shown in cinemas since mid March. Before the lock down there were other Hindi films like ANGREZI MEDIUM and THAPPAD being screened in UAE but these did not return as they were huge FLOPS.
There were two other Indian films to see a return also with CHAL MERA PUTT 2 which collected $1000 from one cinema and Tamil film KANNUM KANNUM KOLLAIYADITHAAL which collected $125 from 2 cinemas. The response in UAE was lacklustre but nothing can be judged yet due to lack of new content. The top films were Hollywood films like THE INVISIBLE MAN and THE GENTLEMEN but the real level as far as cinema in UAE is concerned will be known when there are new films.
Another country Germany where Hindi films are screened saw a few cinemas open up (not including drive ins which were open in lockdown) but again its very cautious as exhibitors also know there is not much content to screen. The wait is now for TENET and MULAN from Hollywood in July. These films are scheduled for 17th and 24th July release respectively but it is not certain yet. There are many states in USA which are allowing cinemas to open but they are not opening as there are no films to screen but New York and California have not been given the go ahead to open cinemas. These states are crucial because if cinemas in these states are not open, then its unlikely that TENET and MULAN will release on the schedule dates. The wait for these two films is across the world as only then it can be gauged where cinema stands in territories which are open for business.
The opening of cinemas in India could also start in the July/August period and it will be TENET and MULAN which will test the waters in India and local industries will be waiting to see the response.
