My wife asked me to go away, says Raakh actor Akash Makhija

S Farah Rizvi (HINDUSTAN TIMES; June 23, 2026)
With the recently released OTT crime thriller Raakh gaining attention, actor Akash Makhija is surprised by how his portrayal of serial killer Babu has left some viewers genuinely intimidated.
Recalling a recent incident, he says, “A group of people in public were so scared of me that they backed away. I was like, ‘Arre, I just played Babu, I am not him!’”
The 31-year-old’s Instagram, too, has been flooded with hate messages. “I never thought Babu would scare people to this extent, but it’s making me feel like sahi kaam kiya hai,” he adds.
Describing his wife’s reaction, Akash shares, “She binge-watched the show and cried uncontrollably. She even asked me to just go away!”
The actor, who was also seen in Bhool Chuk Maaf (2025), reveals he nearly missed out on the role: “I auditioned with around 800 people… After six rounds, I was told nahin hoga. I started looking for other things, then suddenly I got a call: ‘Aaja tu, you are finally selected’.”
Akash is now focused on building on this success with more substantial projects. “Sabko dara liya, now I want the recognition to fetch me more work as soon as possible,” he signs off.
Real challenge facing the multiplexes today isn’t pricing, but consumers' time, says PVR Inox's Sanjeev Bijli

Javed Farooqui (THE ECONOMIC TIMES; July 7, 2025)
The real challenge facing the multiplex industry today isn’t pricing, but time, said Sanjeev Bijli, Executive Director of PVR Inox. With a growing number of entertainment options competing for consumer attention, from streaming platforms to mobile content, audiences are more selective about where and how they spend their leisure hours.
For multiplex operators, the competition is no longer just about ticket sales but about capturing a share of limited time in an increasingly crowded media landscape.
Bijli sees this shift as central to how the company is evolving. As India’s largest cinema chain with 1700 screens gears up to open 100 new screens in FY26, including a significant push in South India, Bijli outlines a strategy focused on regional expansion, experience-led engagement, and adapting to changing consumption patterns.
"The real challenge isn’t pricing, it’s time. Today, consumers have more entertainment options than ever. We’re competing not just for their money, but for their time," said Bijli.
On the perception that high ticket prices deter moviegoers, Bijli responded, “This argument comes up often, but I don’t think pricing is a deterrent. Our average ticket price is around Rs 250 to 260, which is very reasonable for the experience we offer. Compared to global pricing, $10 or more in the US, we’re very affordable at around $3.”
“If price were a real issue, films like Chhaava, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Avatar: The Way Of Water, Pushpa 2 – The Rule, and Kalki 2898 AD wouldn’t become blockbusters. People wouldn’t turn up and make these Rs 500 to 600 crore hits. It’s all about content. If the content resonates, as it did with Stree 2, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, Singham Again, and others, audiences will come regardless of price.”
For FY26, PVR INOX is planning a total investment of around Rs 300 crore. “Our capex on new properties this year will be just over Rs 200 crore, with an additional Rs 100 crore allocated for renovations and investments in IT and technology. Continuous upgrades are essential for operating a large national circuit like ours,” Bijli said.
Of the 100 new screens planned for FY26, 40% will be in South India, particularly Hyderabad and Bangalore, as the region continues to drive significant growth for PVR INOX.
“We’re opening a four-screen cinema at SMR Vinay Mall in Hyderabad, taking our total to 24 screens opened this year,” said Bijli. “We're on track to meet our target of adding 100 screens in FY26. Of these, 40 will be in South India, particularly Hyderabad and Bangalore, which accounts for about 40% of our total expansion. So, the South continues to contribute significantly to our growth.”
Explaining the momentum in the southern market, he said, “The South is rapidly catching up in terms of mall development. Earlier, regions like the North and West, Delhi, Mumbai, and Pune were ahead, and the South was a few years behind. But now, the South has caught up.”
“Developers like Inorbit, Prestige, and Lake Shore, who’ve been long-standing partners of ours, are building high-quality malls, and we’re their preferred cinema partner. These strong relationships and the pace of development are driving our expansion in the region.”
On whether this aggressive expansion risks skewing the balance between screen count and revenue contribution, Bijli said that is already the case. "Currently, South India contributes about 40% of our screen count. And it’s not just a skew in screens, revenues are also higher in the South than in any other region.”
“So, it makes sense to continue expanding there, not indiscriminately, but in specific catchments where there’s demand. These are the markets we’re focusing on, not just in the South, but across the country. That said, the South remains a priority because of strong developments, untapped markets, and a consistent appetite for cinema.”
Contrary to the perception that Hindi-speaking markets are lagging, Bijli offered a more optimistic view. “We’ve had a good first quarter (Q1 FY26). Films like Sitaare Zameen Par and Raid 2 in May performed very well. Housefull 5 also delivered strong numbers. Even Maa, the horror film starring Kajol, has done well. Bhool Chuk Maaf performed strongly toward the end of May. So, we've seen solid success in the Hindi belt too.”
Looking at year-on-year trends, Bijli said, “We’ve done better. About 33.5 million people visited our cinemas in Q1 this year, compared to 30 million last year. That’s a healthy increase of around 10 to 11%.”
He emphasized that a quality experience is central to drawing audiences. “For us, everything starts with the product. If the product is strong, people will come. That means ensuring excellent sound, projection, technology, and seat comfort. Then comes food and beverage quality, customer service, air conditioning, all of which contribute to a smooth, pleasant experience. If guests spend three hours with us, we want it to be completely frictionless and enjoyable, so they want to return.”
To supplement this, PVR INOX has stepped up marketing efforts. “Our Blockbuster Tuesday offer, Rs 99 tickets, has doubled Tuesday admissions from 2 lakh to 4.5 lakh. We have app download offers with Rs 100 discounts, bottomless F&B refills on Fridays, and more. These are just a few examples of the creative campaigns our marketing team rolls out to drive footfalls.”
With half of its new screens to be developed under the FOCO model, Bijli sees this as a strategic adaptation. “About 50% of them will follow the FOCO model. We’re fortunate to have developer partners who believe in our brand and are excited to work with us under this structure.”
He dismissed the idea that this shift signals the decline of the traditional multiplex model. “I don’t agree. While there has been some change in consumer behaviour, it’s not a paradigm shift. In FY25, we had 130 million visitors to our cinemas, a number that clearly shows people are still coming out for the big screen experience.”
“Yes, there’s been a slight dip, maybe 10%, and we’re adapting to that. One way is by exploring models like FOCO, where we share capital expenditure with developers.”
Highlighting the role of multiplexes in driving traffic to malls, he added, “Multiplexes are often located on the top floors of malls and act as major footfall drivers. When a big film releases, like Chhaava or Sitaare Zameen Par, the entire mall benefits. Restaurants, cafes, and retail all see a bump.”
“Developers recognize this value, which is why many are willing to contribute to the multiplex CapEx. It’s not a new concept. This model has been widely used in the West for years. Even in India, brands like McDonald’s have followed this approach, often relying on developer-funded CapEx. We’re simply applying similar principles to adapt to the evolving market.”
First six months of 2025 a mixed bag for the box office

The first six months of 2025 have been a mixed bag for the box office, with small films working, and heavyweight projects tanking
Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; July 1, 2025)
The first six months of 2025 have been a roller-coaster ride for India, with the Pahalgam terror attack and India’s brave response in the form of Operation Sindoor being everyone’s focus. However, the film business remained unaffected. According to an Ormax report, the cumulative total for 2025’s releases, till May, stood at Rs. 4,812 crore, 27% higher than the same period in 2024.
JANUARY
Actor Sonu Sood’s Fateh (Rs. 12.85 crore), Rasha Thadani and Aaman Devgan-starrer Azaad (Rs. 6.32 crore), actor Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency (Rs. 16.52 crore) and actor Shahid Kapoor’s Deva couldn’t set the cash registers ringing. Sky Force featuring Akshay Kumar did manage to break even.
FEBRUARY
Vicky Kaushal-starrer Chhaava became this year’s highest grosser so far. Made on a budget of Rs. 130 crore, the period drama earned Rs. 600 crore. Actors Junaid Khan and Khushi Kapoor’s Loveyapa only collected Rs. 7 crore, against a budget of Rs. 60 crore.
MARCH-APRIL
While Sunny Deol’s Jaat (Rs. 89.50 crore) and Akshay Kumar’s Kesari Chapter 2 did well, Salman Khan’s Sikandar, made on a budget of Rs. 200 crore, failed.
MAY
Ajay Devgn-starrer Raid 2 did well with Rs. 173.28 crore. Also, Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi’s Bhool Chuk Maaf had a decent run with Rs. 74.18 crore.
JUNE
June had two clean hits so far — Housefull 5 and actor Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par, which has been running successfully. Actor Kajol’s horror-mythological drama Maa got a slow start.
“Barring Chhaava, we have not had a true blockbuster. Raid 2 and Jaat did well. I hope the second half is better. I feel the smaller and medium-budget films need to do well in theatres, as we don’t have a big release every week. Bhool Chuk Maaf did well in the two-week window it had between theatrical and digital release.”
- Taran Adarsh, Trade analyst
“2025 has not been so good. Sikandar not working was a shock. Kesari Chapter 2 and Housefull 5 worked. Before the pandemic, such films would run, not just work. We are still struggling, businesswise.”
- Atul Mohan, Trade analyst
“The first half of 2025 saw strong theatrical momentum, led by Chhaava, Raid 2, Bhool Chuk Maaf, Kesari Chapter 2, Sitaare Zameen Par and Jaat. Hollywood also contributed with Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning becoming the first Hollywood release to cross ₹100 crore in 2025 and a solid performance by Final Destination Bloodlines and How to Train Your Dragon. Regional cinema, including Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam films, contributed ₹3,600 crore to the box office.”
- Devang Sampat, Managing Director, Cinepolis India
BIG HITS
Chhaava - Rs. 600.10 crore
Raid 2 - Rs. 178.08 crore
Sky Force - Rs. 131.44 crore
Housefull 5 - Rs. 156.40 crore
Kesari Chapter 2 - Rs. 93.28 crore
Sitaare Zameen Par - Rs. 107.68 crore
BIG MISSES
Sikandar - Rs. 103.45 crore
Deva - Rs. 32.07 crore
Loveyapa - 7.04 crore

Jubilee definitely helped build my confidence but I still faced a lot of challenges-Wamiqa Gabbi

Akash Bhatnagar (HINDUSTAN TIMES; June 27, 2025)
Wamiqa Gabbi is currently basking in the success of her latest release, Bhool Chuk Maaf. But as the actor reveals, this moment has been a long time coming. Though her breakthrough came with the 2023 web series Jubilee, she admits the road ahead wasn’t as smooth as one might expect.
“Jubilee definitely helped build my confidence,” says the 31-year-old, “but I still faced a lot of challenges afterwards.” She adds, “I was getting some offers, but I was also getting rejected. Things didn’t magically become easy for me after Jubilee. It took me a while to process all the rejections and understand why they were happening.”
Wamiqa reflects on the realities of the industry, saying, “That’s when you start to understand the other things at play — the politics, the layers of reasons behind those rejections. It’s not just one or two factors. You have to break through all those barriers just to make yourself visible. And then, you’re simply waiting for the next opportunity to prove yourself again.”
As someone without a film industry background, she admits the mental toll is real: “As an outsider, everything depends on what I did in my last project. There’s always a chance I might not get another opportunity. So, all my energy goes into giving my best in the moment, while hoping for another chance to show what I can do. It’s a tough journey.”
I didn’t come empty handed from Baby John-Wamiqa Gabbi

Akash Bhatnagar (HINDUSTAN TIMES; June 9, 2025)
In the last six months, Wamiqa Gabbi has had a roller coaster of experience in her film journey. The actor had her first big commercial release in 2024 with the Varun Dhawan-starrer Baby John. Though a big-budgeted release, the film failed at the box office. On the other hand, her recent small-budget release Bhool Chuk Maaf turned out to be a commercial success.
Sharing how these experiences shaped her perspective towards work, she says, “I feel every film has its own journey. You never know how any film would work, and if it would resonate with the audience. A film like Tamasha (2015) got recognition after so many years. But a film like Bhool Chuk Maaf working gives you the faith to say yes to original storytelling. It gives you the confidence to put faith in directors like Karan Sharma who are making their first films.”
Considering Baby John was her first big Bollywood outing, she must have had big hopes from it. Ask how she pulled herself up after it failed to connect with audiences, and the 31-year-old says, “It’s up to you what you want to focus on. I didn’t come empty-handed from Baby John. For me, it was all about the opportunity to work with Varun, Atlee (writer) sir and Murad Khetani (producer), and to be a part of their world. That, in itself, was a big thing for me.”
The actor adds, “I can obviously choose to look at all the negatives, but had that film not happened, I don’t know what I’d have done and where I’d be.”

WILL KARATE KID: LEGENDS SCORE AT THE BOX OFFICE?
The month of May has been great for both Hollywood and Bollywood. Raid 2 collected more than Rs. 150 crores. Bhool Chuk Maaf is expected to collect around Rs. 40 crores at the box office in its first week. As for Hollywood, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning still has chances of entering the Rs. 100 crore club as it performed well in its second week. Final Destination Bloodlines, meanwhile, is now all set to hit the Rs. 60 crore mark. Next Friday will see the release of Housefull 5 and hence, no major Hindi film is scheduled to arrive in cinemas. However, a Hollywood film, Karate Kid: Legends, will try its luck.
It belongs to the famous The Karate Kid franchise and stars Jackie Chan in a crucial role. Such martial arts films have worked in the past and moreover, the Hindi version has voiceovers by Ajay Devgn and his son Yug. This is Yug’s first-ever work in cinema. He attended a promotional event of Karate Kid: Legends with papa Ajay and it caught eyeballs.
Karate Kid: Legends will have a wide release in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. However, the advance booking has been very poor. Hopefully, the tickets will be sold in current and it’ll manage to collect in the Rs. 1 crore range.
Meanwhile, several Hindi films will be up for release tomorrow like Bombay, Chidiya, Dilli Dark, His Story Of Itihaas and Love Karu Yaaa Shaadi. In a rare instance, as many as five Marathi films would also be out like Mhanje Waghache Panje, Ashtapadi, Dharmarakshak Ahilyadevi Holkar Ek Yug, Mawaali and Paivatechi Savali. Sadly, all 10 of them will face a struggle to get screens and audiences.

(Crisp) Movie Review: BHOOL CHUK MAAF by FENIL SETA

Bhool Chuk Maaf rests on a very unique idea. The first half is predictable but has some funny moments to keep the interest going. The second half is where the film goes into unexpected territory. But here, the narrative drags in the middle. Just the way the character is stuck in a time loop, the viewers might also feel stuck as the film gets repetitive. A few developments are plain silly. The songs don’t work and that’s quite disappointing since the banner (Maddock Films) is known for a great music score. Thankfully, the climax is justified and worthy. Also, Rajkummar Rao rises above the script and is terrific. He brings the house down in a particular scene in the second half; kudos should also go here to writer-director Karan Sharma. Wamiqa Gabbi's performances and expressions are spot on. Sanjay Mishra (Bhagwandas) leaves a huge mark in a small role. Ishtiyak Khan (Kishan) and Dheerendra Gautam (Hari) raise laughs. Pragati Mishra (Keri) is damn good while Akash Makhija (Hamid), Seema Pahwa, Raghubir Yadav, Zakir Hussain, Anubha Fatehpuria (Titli’s mother), Jay Thakkar (Sushil) and Vineet Kumar (priest) others are fair. All in all, Bhool Chuk Maaf is an average flick.
My rating - ** ½ out of 5!

FINAL DESTINATION BLOODLINES IS A SURPRISE HIT; MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – THE FINAL RECKONING UNDERPERFORMS; ALL EYES ON THE CONTROVERSIAL BHOOL CHUK MAAF
The supernatural film Final Destination Bloodlines has emerged as a surprise success. The industry expectation was that it would open at Rs. 3 crores max. But it opened at Rs. 4.25 crores. On Saturday, it was going to face competition from a Hollywood film. Everyone was sure that it would drop. Instead, Final Destination Bloodlines had a decent jump. The target for the film was to cross the earnings of Evil Dead Rise; it earned Rs. 30 crores. Final Destination Bloodlines was able to reach this figure by Wednesday itself. If it holds well in the next two weeks, it has the potential to cross the Rs. 50 crore mark.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, meanwhile, has underperformed. It opened well at Rs. 16.50 crores on Saturday. Ideally, it should have jumped to Rs. 20 crores on Sunday. Instead, it settled at Rs. 17.75 crores. The film fell on Monday to Rs. 5.75 crores. It collected Rs. 5.50 crores and Rs. 4.50 crores on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively. The first week will end at around Rs. 54 crores. With such trending, crossing the Rs. 100 crore mark will be impossible.
Meanwhile, all eyes are now on Bhool Chuk Maaf. The film was all set to release on May 9. But on May 8, its producers, Maddock Films, called off the theatrical release and announced that the film will release directly on Amazon Prime Video on May 16. PVR Inox didn’t take this U-turn kindly and they knocked on the doors of Bombay High Court. The court stopped Maddock from premiering Bhool Chuk Maaf on Amazon. A few days later, both the parties had an out-of-court settlement. As per the settlement, Bhool Chuk Maaf will be released in cinemas on May 23 and it’ll then premiere on OTT two weeks later, on June 6.
With such an arrangement, it was assumed that viewers might not turn up to see the film in large numbers. However, the advance booking has been decent. It can still open in the range of Rs. 2.50-3 crores.
There are two more films this week - the historical Kesari Veer and the horror comedy Kapkapiii. Sadly, both these movies have negligible buzz and will go unnoticed.

There is no problem with the theatres, the problem is that we need to raise the bar-Rajkummar Rao

HINDUSTAN TIMES (May 22, 2025)
Bringing their hilarious one-liners, killer moves, and warm camaraderie, actors Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi, along with director Karan Sharma, recently visited the HT City office in Delhi to promote their upcoming film Bhool Chuk Maaf. In a conversation with Sonal Kalra, Chief Managing Editor, Lifestyle & Entertainment, Hindustan Times, during the Stars in the City session, the trio entertained fans with witty responses, dancing to Chor Bazari, and weighing in on the ongoing OTT vs theatre debate.
Many people prefer waiting for a film to come on OTT rather than going to a theatre to watch it. What can be done to retain the love for movie theatres?
Rajkummar Rao: There is no problem with the theatres, the problem is that we need to raise the bar. Give the audience something unique and fresh. We should make good films and work on promoting it well because people should be aware that this film is there on the screens.
Karan Sharma: Aap ghar par film dekh bhi rahe hain toh usme maza nahin aata. Main uss generation se aaya hun jahan DDLJ (Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, 1995) dekhne ke liye black mein ticket khareedne ke liye dande khaye hain. Aur andar jaa ke jo mahaul milta hai, jo collective laughter aata hai, wo kahin aur nahin milta.
What encouraged you to be part of this film?
Wamiqa Gabbi: Sirf ek cheez toh nahi thi, bahut saari cheezein thi. Like working with (producer) Dinesh Vijan, Rajkummar, and Karan sir. Aur itni funny script hai ki narration mein main bas hass rahi thi. Aur end mein aate aate, (ye film) itni khubsoorat baatein keh jaati hai... I was very happy that this (film) came to me.
What is that one moment where you don’t mind being stuck in a loop?
Rajkummar: Certainly my wedding day, because it was the most beautiful experience I’ve ever had. Another one would be the very nice moments with my mother that I really cherish, especially now that she is not around anymore. I’d love to relive those moments.
If not an actor, what profession would you have chosen?
Rajkummar: Since I was little, (acting) is the only thing I’ve wanted to do and I’ve worked hard only towards this. I’ve never thought of a Plan B. Plan A was there, and Plan B was to make Plan A work. But hypothetically, I think I’d be in the Armed Forces. I get very fascinated seeing soldiers.”

All quiet on Bollywood front: Producers postpone launches, delay promotions as border tensions dent confidence

Rajesh N Naidu (THE ECONOMIC TIMES; May 14, 2025)
Mumbai: The military conflict between India and Pakistan seems to have had an unproportionate impact on the Hindi film industry, with many filmmakers delaying promotional and marketing activities, and postponing, or even shelving, film and trailer launches.
The industry is staring at an estimated or potential loss of Rs, 150-200 crore in the form of cost of capital and deferred revenues due to this, according to producers and trade analysts.
"In these times of geopolitical unrest, cinema pauses not from the lack of creativity but from caution," said Suniel Wadhwa, a veteran film distributor and co-founder and director at Karmic Films.
"There are losses in the form of delayed cash, sunk costs, interest on idle capital, broken contracts, and missed momentum. These will have a ripple impact on producers, promotional and advertising agencies, theatres, financiers, and even streamers," he said.
"I think more than Rs. 700-800-crore worth of Hindi films stand vulnerable at this stage," Wadhwa said.
To be sure, there has already been a sense of uncertainty around theatre attendance in the industry, fuelled by a series of box-office flops and an overall decline in collections in recent months, largely due to shifting audience preferences.
The launch of Operation Sindoor, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in the early hours of May 7, and the subsequent military conflict further dampened the mood among producers of several Hindi films slated for release in May and June.
Makers of Kesari Veer and Housefull 5 stalled promotional activities, while those behind Sitaare Zameen Par and Thug Life postponed the releases of their trailer and audio soundtrack, respectively. Producers of mid-budget film Bhul Chuk Maaf opted to forego theatre release entirely and instead debut the film on a streaming platform.
Some veteran trade analysts attributed a part of such actions to low confidence among producers. "Even though one cannot rule out the impact of Indo-Pak conflict on cinema, one also has to consider that a big reason behind delaying releases is low confidence of producers to release films in theatres due to increasing unpredictability in theatrical performance of films," said Shaaminder Malik, a film distributor and trade analyst.
"Consequently, there are makers of upcoming big-budget films who are planning to release their films directly on streamers after their teasers and trailers received unfavourable response," he added.
Meanwhile, production of the sequel of the film Sanam Teri Kasam, which performed well on its re-release recently, may get delayed because the main actor has declined to work with the main actress because she is from Pakistan.
Some industry insiders believe the impact would be minimal as the border tensions have eased and life has returned to normal in most of the country since India and Pakistan agreed to stop military action on Saturday.
"I think films scheduled to release in May will be impacted. But releases in June will not be impacted that much," producer Rajesh R Nair said. "But I think Hollywood releases in May will be a saving grace as these franchise films have a huge following in India and their makers are not postponing their release."
Bombay High Court stays release of movie Bhool Chuk Maaf after PVR Inox plea

Swati Deshpande (THE TIMES OF INDIA; May 11, 2025)
Mumbai: In a set back for the Rajkummar Rao starrer Bombay High Court on Friday stayed the forthcoming release of a court room drama granting interim relief to PVR Inox Ltd which sought the stay claiming violation of a contract for its release in theatres.
PVR moved the HC for a special hearing citing urgency. Through senior counsel Dinyar Madon and advocate Darshan Mehta it said unless the scheduled release is stayed its claim would be rendered infructuous. Madon said the urgency was because Maddock Films Pvt Ltd and others who produced the film had only on a day earlier terminated an Agreement dated 6th May 2025 by which it agreed to release the film “Bhool Chuk Maaf” in PVR theatres in India on 9th May 2025.
Under the agreement Maddock had to also keep a minimum eight weeks hold back from the First Theatrical Release Date in India till the date of release on OTT platforms. He submitted that PVR spent on promotions and also had prior bookings for the May 9 release but now the film was to be release instead on OTT on May 16. Maddock through senior counsel Venkatesh Dhond and advocate Ameet Naik opposed the application for the grant of urgent reliefs.
Dhond first submitted that not only had PVR misconstrued the Agreement, the 8 week restraint clause would kick in only if the film was to be theatrically released.
He said since the producers have now decided not to release the film in theatres, in view of the heightened security presently prevalent across the nation and in particular in the Northern part of the Country, there was nothing to prevent its release on other platforms.
Justice Arif Doctor who heard the matter after applying the law of contract to the facts of the dispute said PVR made had in keeping its end of the obligations, taken steps and incurred costs towards marketing and advertising the release of the film in its theatres and sold tickets and “any such last minute cancellation would also affect (the theatre’s )reputation and goodwill.”
Besides arguments that owner of the film can decide where to release is “also plainly untenable,” as it had no right to breach a concluded Agreement. The HC order made available on Saturday restrained the film’s release and sought a reply from Maddock and film’s owner in two weeks. It will next hear the matter on June 16.

Maddock sued by PVR for Rs. 60 cr damages for cancelling theatrical release
Niharika Lal (BOMBAY TIMES; May 11, 2025)
What happened
The makers of Bhool Chuk Maaf have been sued by PVR INOX cinemas. The cinema chain is seeking a “stay on the OTT release and damages of Rs. 60 crore” at the Bombay High Court.
A source says, “The cinema chain has requested the court to stay the OTT release. The film should be released in cinemas first, and then on OTT after eight weeks, as per the initial arrangement.” The court has already heard both the parties – the cinema chain and the producers and will issue its order on Monday. Attempts were made to contact the producers, but there was no response till the time of going to press.
‘Producers shouldn’t have bypassed theatres’
“PVR INOX has approached the court to set an example against unethical practices,” says an exhibitor, explaining, “If others follow this route of skipping theatrical release last minute, cinemas will have no films to show.”
A source adds, “If the film had been released theatrically, it wouldn’t have been eligible for an OTT release so soon, that’s why they skipped it.
Veteran exhibitor Raj Bansal says, “The producers should have refrained from bypassing theatres and jumping to OTT.”
Cinemas argue that this is a matter of principle. A cinema business analyst says, “The producers took the OTT route because there was no buzz around the film. It was an easy way out. The government didn’t tell you to shut cinemas. As of now, there is no advisory. If you opt out after giving hope to cinemas for nearly a month with promotions, you must be held accountable.”
Background
After the trailer for Bhool Chuk Maaf played in cinemas for months, the film took an unexpected turn just two days before its release. Producer Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films and Amazon MGM Studios announced that the romantic comedy would bypass theatres and head straight to Prime Video on May 16, citing “heightened security drills across the nation.”

With Bhool Chuk Maaf bypassing theatres for an OTT release in light of escalating India-Pakistan tension, maker Dinesh Vijan hopes the comedy will be accepted despite the last-minute change

Calling off a film’s theatrical outing a day before its release is almost unheard of. But then, unusual circumstances demand unusual decisions. Producer Dinesh Vijan understands this perfectly. That’s why in light of the escalating tension between India and Pakistan, the producer, on Thursday, May 8, announced that the Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi-starrer, Bhool Chuk Maaf, was bypassing its theatrical release and would instead directly arrive on Amazon Prime Video a week later.
The statement issued by the makers read, “In light of recent events and the heightened security drills across the nation, we, at Maddock Films and Amazon MGM Studios, have decided to bring our family entertainer, Bhool Chuk Maaf, directly to your homes on May 16 only on Prime Video, worldwide.”
Such a decision not only involves last-minute changes, but also poses the risk of adversely affecting the film. When mid-day reached out to Vijan to understand how they took the call, he said that they were led purely by the need of the hour.
He said, “In light of recent events, we felt a strong responsibility to prioritize the collective sentiment of the nation. Today, what matters more is standing together as a nation when it counts. Of course, there were last-minute changes, and it’s natural to wonder how this will impact the film.”
He added that despite the challenging turn of events, he was confident that the Karan Sharma-directed comedy would find its way into the audience’s hearts. “If there is one thing we’ve learned, it’s that a good story always finds its audience. We hope Bhool Chuk Maaf brings warmth and laughter when we all need it most.”
The comedy about a couple stuck in a time loop marks Maddock Films’ second release of the year after its blockbuster Chhaava.
With only a day to go for its release, the feel-good movie’s advance booking had naturally begun. We learnt that ticket holders across the country will be issued refunds.
A trade source said, “In such cases, exhibitors refund the money. So whatever tickets have been bought in the pre-sales of Bhool Chuk Maaf, the exhibitors will return the money.”

BHOOL CHUK MAAF’S SUDDEN THEATRICAL CANCELLATION SENDS SHOCKWAVES
Bhool Chuk Maaf was all set to be released in cinemas tomorrow, that is, May 9. The advance booking had started and even the press show invites were sent out to the members of the media. But at 11:00 am on May 8, the makers announced that they won’t be releasing the film tomorrow and moreover, it’ll never see the light of day in cinemas! They further revealed that the film will premiere on OTT, on Amazon Prime Video, on May 16.
The statement read, “In light of the recent events and the heightened security drills across the nation, we at Maddock Films and Amazon MGM Studios have decided to bring our family entertainer, Bhool Chuk Maaf, directly to your homes on May 16—only on Prime Video, worldwide. While we were eagerly looking forward to celebrating the film with you in theatres, the spirit of the nation comes first. Jai Hind.”
There were murmurs that Bhool Chuk Maaf might get delayed by a week as there might be military escalations between India and Pakistan, leading to a tense situation in the country. Hence, many were prepared for it. But the makers not just pushed the release by a week, they also decided to bypass the theatrical route. The exhibitors are obviously angry. The situation reminded them of the dark days of the pandemic. But those days were different as cinemas were shut and there was a fear of going to cinemas. At present, cinemas are open and there’s no fear at all.
The holdover releases faced a dent in collections on Wednesday, May 7, due to the news coverage about Operation Sindoor. But it was not alarming and it's not like people will skip leisure activities and focus only on the developments across the border, the next few days. Also, the exhibitors feel that the makers could have probably waited and brought their film in cinemas a week or two later. Cancelling the theatrical release has led to disappointment and dejection among cinema owners.
As of 10:00 am on May 8, Bhool Chuk Maaf had sold around 5000 tickets. It could have opened at around Rs. 3 crores and if content was strong, the film would have collected Rs. 14-15 crores in its first weekend. With no competition from any major Hindi release until June 6, the film had the chance to be a sleeper hit. Last year, Srikanth, also starring Rajkummar Rao, was released in the same week and took advantage of negligible competition, collecting around Rs. 48-50 crores. Bhool Chuk Maaf could have followed suit.
Meanwhile, Raid 2 will now have a further advantage. The Ajay Devgn-starrer opened at a huge Rs. 19.25 crores, much more than Rs. 11-12 crores that was expected from it. At the end of Week 1, it is expected to collect around Rs. 94 crores. Last year, Ajay Devgn’s Shaitaan managed to collect Rs. 145 crores plus and also had the benefit of an open run. It managed to do so despite collecting Rs. 80 crores in Week 1. Raid 2 has earned more in its initial week and therefore, it won’t be a surprise if it manages to clock a huge number in its lifetime.

Rajkummar Rao, Wamiqa Gabbi to shoot one of Bhool Chuk Maaf's promotional songs in Varanasi

Sources say Bhool Chuk Maaf makers are adding two songs at the last minute, with Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi set to shoot one in Varanasi this month
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; April 6, 2025)
Last week, it was announced that Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi-starrer Bhool Chuk Maaf, which was to initially hit the screens on April 10, has been pushed to May 9. Now, mid-day has learnt that director Karan Sharma is making additions, specifically two songs, to the romantic comedy. Sources tell us that while one is a promotional dance number, the other is a romantic track.
What made the director add two songs at the last minute? From what we’ve heard, both Sharma and producer Dinesh Vijan apparently felt they would increase the entertainment quotient of the comedy, which revolves around Rao’s character who is stuck in a time loop a day before his wedding.
A source reveals, “Of the two songs, Rajkummar and Wamiqa filmed one on March 29 at a studio in Mira Road. A set depicting a small-town street was built for the vibrant track. It’s a peppy promotional number composed by Tanishk Bagchi.”
The unit is now prepping for the second song that will be shot in Uttar Pradesh, which is where the film is set. “Rajkummar and Wamiqa will head to Varanasi in mid-April. With the film revolving around the couple’s impending wedding, this one will have a romantic bachelorette party vibe. Both the songs are choreographed by Vijay Ganguly, with costumes by Sheetal Sharma,” adds the source.
Many Hindi films have opted against a theatrical release in the next two-three months

Many Hindi films have opted against a theatrical release in the next two-three months, we find out why
Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; March 19, 2025)
Amid a flurry of OTT releases, a film releasing in theatres is a big deal in itself these days. It is almost a gamble, given how picky audiences are about a theatrical watch. One look at the 2025 calendar of releases, and you will realize that the next three months seem to be a rough patch for the industry. Among others, the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) is said to be one of the reasons for the lean patch.
Looking at April alone, many releases have been shifted. The Akshay Kumar and Arshad Warsi-starrer Jolly LLB 3 will now hit the screens in August. Filmmaker Karan Johar’s Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, starring Varun Dhawan, Janhvi Kapoor and Sanya Malhotra, will now hit the screens on September 12 instead of April 18. A source tells us that while the shoot started later than intended, businessman Adar Poonawalla buying 50% stake in KJo’s Dharma Productions also added to the delay.
Metro... In Dino was originally set to come out on November 29 last year, but it got pushed to July 4. Sharing why the film wasn’t slated for a summer release, a source close to the project informs us: “We wanted a desired window looking at the other releases. So, we settled on July 4.”
Of course, the trade is not happy with the lean patch. Expert Atul Mohan says, “Every month sees one or two big releases, but small filmmakers don’t prefer to release their films in theatres when the IPL is on. So, they push their dates by a month or two.”
Ananth Narayan Mahadevan, director of Phule, isn’t perturbed by the IPL or other films releasing alongside: “April 10 is the 197th birth anniversary of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule. So, how can we miss out on that date? There won’t be any point otherwise.”
Films set to hit the screens this summer
April currently has four theatrical releases that are likely to hit the screens as scheduled — Jaat and Bhool Chuk Maaf on April 10, Phule on April 11 and The Bhootnii on April 18. May has two releases — Raid 2 and Kesari Veer.
June will see three films in theatres — Housefull 5, Maalik and Maa.
