I wouldn’t want anyone in Guru Dutt's family to be unhappy about the biopic-Bhavna Talwar

Master storyteller’s daughter slaps legal notice, alleges copyright infringement after Bhavna Talwar announces film on auteur; director says will seek kin’s permission “at some point’’
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; January 16, 2021)

Considered one of the most unique voices in Indian cinema, it is hardly surprising that Guru Dutt continues to inspire filmmakers, decades after his passing. From Anurag Kashyap and Sanjay Leela Bhansali to Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, many directors have unsuccessfully attempted to offer a retelling of the maverick actor-filmmaker’s life - one that was all the richer for his deeply introspective works Pyaasa (1957) and Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959), and yet, tinged with loneliness and personal sorrow.

Last year, Bhavna Talwar became the latest director to take a stab at making his biopic as she announced Pyaasa. However, mid-day has now learnt that Neena (Sana) Memon, the only surviving child to Dutt and wife Geeta Bali, has sent a legal notice to Talwar, stating that the former is the sole copyright owner of the  late actor’s life story. The legal notice, a copy of which is in possession of this paper, states that her film will be construed as “infringement of copyright under the Copyright Act.” Kaleem Khan, spokesperson of Memon, says, “Sana Memon has not assigned any rights to a third party, production house or studio.”

When mid-day reached out to Talwar, who has previously helmed Dharm (2007), she said, “I am not aware of any legal notice sent by her.”

Talwar, who has spent the past seven years developing the script, says it traces Dutt’s early success and his evolution into a true artiste creating seminal works. “The film won’t portray [any incident or person] incorrectly, and one wouldn’t want anyone in his family to be unhappy about it. The information that I have referred to is available in public domain. So, I am not worried about [copyright infringement]. I have delivered the script, and this is a film that I will make. I am sure the producer, Sheetal Talwar, will do what is right and will reach out to the family at some point.” mid-day reached out to producer Sheetal Talwar, who didn’t respond till press time.

Bhavna Talwar to direct Heidi adaptation; stars stars Bill Nighy, Mark Williams

Kunal Guha (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 28, 2016)

Director Bhavna Talwar, who made her debut with the National Award winner Dharm (2007) starring Pankaj Kapur and Supriya Pathak Kapur, is directing the feature adaptation of the popular children's classic Heidi, titled Heidi - Queen of the Mountains. "Simon (Wright, producer) approached me about it and I jumped at the opportunity. I have obviously read the series as a child but this one will be a contemporary interpretation of the story," says Bhavna, who plans to retain her style of storytelling in retelling the adventures of the six-year-old girl cared for by her grandfather in the Swiss Alps.

The film has completed its first schedule in the UK and stars Golden Globe and BAFTA-winning actor Bill Nighy (Love Actually, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Pirates of the Caribbean), Mark Williams (Arthur Weasly in the Harry Potter series), Emilia Fox (The Pianist, Cashback) and Helen Baxendale (Friends, The Investigator).

Gearing up to work on the second schedule of the film, to be shot in India, Talwar is also scouting for shooting locations in Spain and Austria. Like the original series penned by Swiss author Johanna Spyri, this one is slated to be a trilogy. "The intent is to work on a series of three but let's see how the first one shapes up as it will set the benchmark. I'm very excited about it," adds Talwar, who plans to deliver the film by the end of the year.

Biopics of Rajiv Gandhi & Sanjay Gandhi in the pipeline?

Subhash K Jha (DNA; July 5, 2015)

The Gandhi fixation continues in India — and we’re not talking about the Mahatma here — but rather, the political dynasty that stayed in power for several years.

We recently told you how director Manish Gupta has a script ready for an Indira Gandhi biopic starring Vidya Balan, but that the actress will only say yes once the necessary permissions from Sonia Gandhi are in place.

All the way from 2006 to the time of his death in 2011, director Jagmohan Mundhra struggled to bring out his biopic on Sonia Gandhi, but was served with a legal notice.

Then, in 2012 Bhavna Talwar announced a biopic on Sonia’s slain husband Rajiv, but the film never really took off after the scripting stage. While names like Abhishek Bachchan, Colin Firth and Riz Ahmed did the rounds for a while, we learn that Ranbir Kapoor’s name has also been cropping up of late and that the film will finally take shape soon and Abhishek is most likely to be picked.

Now, in 2015, filmmaker Hansal Mehta has just announced his project on Rajiv’s controversial younger brother, Sanjay Gandhi and is looking at names like Rajkummar Rao, Arjun Kapoor and Varun Dhawan. Only time will tell, who makes the cut for the role. Both films are expected to release mid-2016. Will we see a clash of the Gandhi brothers at the box- office?
