DUM LAGA KE HAISHA IS A SURPRISE SUCCESS!
It’s a sweet coincidence. Last year, Queen released a week before Holi. It started on a poor note but thanks to the terrific word of mouth, it picked up dramatically and became one of the biggest hits of 2014. What also worked in its advantage is that it excelled very well in the 2nd (Holi) weekend. In fact, it was a rare film of recent times that collected more in Week 2 than in Week 1! Now this year, Dum Laga Ke Haisha is all set to repeat the act. It released on Feb 27, a week before the festival of colours and had a poor opening. But the film has touched the hearts of viewers significantly. And this was evident with the huge increase in the collections on Saturday and Sunday. Moreover, the collections of Monday are just a little lesser than Friday while Tuesday collections equal Monday collections!
Now all eyes are set on Dum Laga Ke Haisha’s second week collections. Friday is a Holi and hence a jump in earnings is expected. Also, the new releases serve no competition at all. Hence, it has a huge advantage till the release of NH10 on March 13.
At a time when films are failing big time due to high costs, the success of Dum Laga Ke Haisha should make people sit up and take notice. The film was made on tight costs and even the cost of promotion was kept in check. Being a somewhat niche film, it was released in selected screens on a small scale. But ultimately, what also worked was that it was a fabulous film. And the promos gave out the correct idea about the film. Here’s hoping Dum Laga Ke Haisha continues to win hearts and turn out to be a big hit, at a time when industry is falling short of successful films!
------------------
3 small films are all set to release tomorrow. My views:
DIRTY POLTICS: This should have the best opening of all 3. It features Mallika Sherawat, Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah and is inspired from the true story of Bhanwari Devi. The film has an intense sex scene between Mallika and Om. It’s glimpses were seen in the promos. The film can work in the single screens.
HEY BRO: It was to release last week but didn’t as it failed to get adequate screens. Its 2 songs – Birju and DJ – have got noticed. But the film looks poor and this will surely affect its collections.
BADMASHIYAAN: This seems to be a nice decent film and stars Sharib Hashmi of Filmistaan fame. But sadly, the film has failed to generate excitement and even the songs haven’t worked at all. Again, this film was to release on Feb 27 but it got dragged into court for being a rip-off of Korean film Couples. An upcoming Hindi film, Mango, is an official remake of Couples and its makers hence sued Badmashiyaan makers. The matter ended after both parties did an out of court settlement.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE DIRTY POLITICS, HEY BRO OR BADMASHIYAAN? DO LET ME KNOW!
Badmashiyaan gets 12 cuts from Censors; 'Kutte kaminey' replaced with 'andha kahin ka'

Roshmilla Bhattacharya (MUMBAI MIRROR; March 5, 2015)
Badmashiyaan, a romcom revolving around a gold digging con woman,
wasn't as lucky. Screened for the censors at Liberty cinema on February
19, it was given 12 cuts and cleared with a U/A certificate on February
23. "We learnt about the review two days later but by then we'd received
the certificate and couldn't re-apply," says the film's director Amit
Khanna.
Prod him on the cuts and he informs that to his distress, Bollywood's patented phrase, 'kutte kaminey' had to be redubbed as 'andha kahin ka' and 'ma ki aankh' with 'ma ki eye'. Several other words like 'tutiya' (mistaken for chu**ya) and 'pichwada' were muted, along with the phrase 'mard to saare kutte hote hain'. And 'haramkhor' was deleted.
"Even 'my ass' which was used not in a derogatory sense but as a reaction to a friend's excuse that he couldn't make it because of a meeting, was frowned upon," says Khanna.
What was even more baffling was that in a scene where the girl goes to file an FIR for molestation, the words 'hum bistri' had to be muted from her dialogue but the same words when used by the guy who insists he didn't ask her to sleep with him, were allowed.
"Some of the words objected were on the CBFC's cuss list, and some went beyond it. The process was baffling. But with a release around the corner, I had to give in," reasons Khanna. After the meeting when Amit was waiting for his car, a couple of members told him sympathetically that they hadn't wanted so many cuts.
"'We would have agreed to a 'U' certificate but we they were answerable to someone higher up," he recalls.

Unlike my character Naari, I'm quite complicated in real life-Suzanna Mukherjee

BOMBAY TIMES (March 5, 2015)
Although Suzanna Mukherjee
is sexy, smart and stylish like her character Naari Shrivastava in
director Amit Khanna's Fun Never Ends - Badmashiyaan, it was a little
tough for her to play a con girl. Excerpts from a conversation with the
actress...
Your film opens in cinemas on Holi (tomorrow), making it a festival release.
All the major holidays in our country are ruled by such huge stars that I feel like one too (laughs)! Besides being a festival of love, which our film is all about, Holi is also the most badmaash festival of India.
How was the experience of playing a con girl in the movie?
The biggest challenge was getting into Naari's thought process. In real life, I'm quite complicated, while Naari is free of all life complications. Playing this character was liberating because I realised how much fun you can have, once you stop caring about what's right and wrong.
Your mother is half-Russian and half-Ukrainian, while your father is Bengali. What qualities have you imbibed from both?
While my dad kept me grounded with a very strict Indian upbringing, my mother has always been my best friend, who speaks the truth, whether I can handle it or not. Also, I have learnt many languages, which is a perk.
Apparently, you're inspired by Carrie Bradshaw (character played by Sarah Jessica Parker) from Sex And The City.
I've watched the entire series at least 10 times and both the films too. In my film, I got to wear some beautiful outfits and accessories like Carrie wore on the show.
Fun Never Ends Badmashiyaan, produced by VRG Motion PicturesAfter Studios, releases tomorrow.

Badmashiyaan makers opt for costly settlement in copyright violation case?

Asira Tarannum (MID-DAY; February 26, 2015)
Almost a fortnight after the Sharib Hashmi-starrer 'Badmashiyaan' was embroiled in a copyright violation case, the makers are said to have opted for an out-of-court settlement to facilitate the film’s release — albeit delayed by a week.
The Delhi High court had restrained the distribution and exhibition of the film’s trailer after Multi Screen Media (MSM) and Kaleidoscope Entertainment Pvt Ltd claimed it to be a copy of the Korean film, Couples, on which their yet-to-be-released film Mango is based.
Yesterday, VRG Motion Pictures, which has produced Badmashiyaan, and MSM mutually decided to settle the issue out of court. "The terms and conditions of the contract are being worked out. The lawyers will decide on the amount today so that the film can release by next week," says a source.
Badmashiyaan’s star cast — Sharib, Sidhant Gupta, Suzanna Mukherjee and Karan Mehra — have been seen promoting the film in spite of the legal trouble.
The film's producer Vijay Gutte confirms having decided on an out-of-the-court settlement. "Before the terms and conditions are chalked out, we cannot divulge anything," he says.
Madhubala's nephew Imran Ali scores with his songs in Badmashiyaan

Sanyukta Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; February 23, 2015)
Imran Ali's childhood was
filled with stories about Bollywood's most beautiful actress,
his paternal aunt Madhubala. Today, the 32-year-old budding
composer tries to revive the melody of her evergreen songs like Aayega
aanewala, Aaiye Meherbaan and his favourite, the Half Ticket number Aake
seedhi lagi dil pe, without disclosing his relationship with the Venus
of the silver screen.
Imran worked as an assistant to Pritam Chakraborty for six-and-a-half years before scoring a song for Khamoshiyan with Anupam Amod. Their jodi goes by the name of Imran Bobby. “My father, Sharafat Ali Shaikh, used to sing Mohd. Rafi's songs but never established himself as a singer but my brother Bunty became a top programmer with hits like Dhoom,“ he beams.
He himself has just composed four numbers for Badmashiyaan, including an item song, but wishes he could have made sad, romantic tracks for his aunt instead. “I think she'd have loved Tu har lamha which Arijit Singh sang for Khamoshiyan. My father says that she was so beautiful her skin would glow and she had to cover herself in a veil,“ he says.
Unfortunately, he didn't get a single glimpse of her but on his grandmother's death anniversary he saw the most beautiful woman walk into the room. “I was floored by her beauty,“ he recalls. “Later, my mother told me that she was Madhubala's sister.“

Delhi High Court put brakes on Badmashiyaan promotions as it's similar to Tyrewala's Mango?

MID-DAY (February 11, 2015)
The Delhi High Court has put brakes on the promotions of Badmashiyaan following allegations of copyright infringement. It has restrained the distribution and exhibition of the film’s trailer after Multi Screen Media (MSM) and Kaleidoscope Entertainment Pvt Ltd claimed it to be a copy of the Korean film, Couples, on which their yet-to-be-released film Mango is based.
The production house claims that the court granted them relief on the basis that they have exclusive rights to the Hindi remake of Couples (2011). Interestingly, the Korean film in question is itself a remake of the 2005 Japanese film, A Stranger of Mine. While Mango went on the floors in 2013, Badmashiyaan was filmed last year.
Pleading ignorance about the court order, Vijay Gutte, producer of Badmaashiyaan, says: “We have not received any notice or court order from anyone. We have been promoting our film since a month.”
Advocate Rizwan Siddiquee, who represents VRG Motion Pictures that has produced Badmaashiyaan, states no notice was served or any claim made for any alleged copyright infringement. He adds that the restraining order has neither been served to the makers nor were they aware of any such proceedings. “They are now keen to see the grounds on which the court order seems to have been granted for alleged copyright violation without hearing my client or even viewing the film. While my client is duly seeking service of the order copy, we have already started preparing to challenge the said order,” he says.
