Nose no limits; How Himesh Reshammiya became a Lord and a meme
3:19 PM
Posted by Fenil Seta
Mohua Das (THE TIMES OF INDIA; September 7, 2025)
These days, Himesh Reshammiya enters the stage like Batman might. He doesn’t walk on so much as emerge through smoke and trap door in black flared cape and sunglasses. The cap is firmly welded to his head and has become the leitmotif of his Cap Mania Tour, with a giant red replica looming over the stage.
“The cap happened because I lost my hair. It was the best look possible then but created an emotional connect,” he says. The admission is oddly disarming. His camouflage attempt spawned parodies but made him instantly recognizable. The transplanted hair that followed has been mercurial too — silky curtains, poker-straight spikes, side-swept bangs, retro shag. And while the hair styles may change, the nasal twang remains non-negotiable. Only some artists can turn what they were once mocked for into a punchline. Himesh, now 52, does that with ease. On stage, he asks fans: “Naak se gaaun kya?” (Should I sing from my nose?) and the stadium roars back, “Yes!”
That twang has carried him further than even he’d imagined. Along with Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Coldplay and Ed Sheeran, he’s made it to Bloomberg’s Pop Power List. Debuting at No 22, he is the first Indian to do so. The feat, he says, isn’t a fluke. “My strength has always been as a composer who knew how to spot the X-factor. My voice needed Himesh the composer to deliver those 50 back-to-back hits.”
It sounds faintly absurd phrased that way, except for one thing. The ranking is based on seven data-driven metrics including live revenues, ticket sales, digital song streams and social media following. “The numbers have spoken, so I've nothing to add,” he deadpans.
He’s had his share of critics. About ‘Jhalak Dikhla Jaa’, which released 20 years ago, he recalls, “People loved the song and I got awards, yet they asked, ‘Arre naak se kyun gaa raha hai?’ (Why are you singing nasally?)”
Fast-forward to 2025, and fans dressed in HR-emblazoned caps and jackets watch Reshammiya sing ‘tera tera… surroooor’, the song that launched a thousand memes and is now chanted by Gen Z in sold-out stadiums with the kind of fervour you usually witness for boybands and cricket finals.
The Delhi and Mumbai concerts saw 50,000 turn up. When Mumbai sold out, fans flew to Delhi where the concert was over two nights because one wasn’t enough. Though the show was meant to close at 10 pm, Himesh informed the crowd, “Aaj main mood mein aa gaya hoon,” and carried on for another hour. Nobody complained.
This is the same man who once baffled linguists by releasing an album titled ‘Aap Kaa Surroor’ with the respectful ‘Aap’ not even used once. Instead, it was Tera on a loop — Naam Hai Tera, Tera Fitoor, Tera Mera Milna, Tera Aana, Tera Deewana — like a Freudian fixation running through his discography like a watermark. Now, after two decades, five movies, a hair transplant, a vocal-cord surgery that gifted him a second bass octave, and a six-pack, he has been rebranded by fans as ‘Lord Himesh’.
His unlikely comeback began with Surroorgasm. Not a medical condition but a meme page that mutated into a stan account with nearly 1.5 lakh followers on Instagram.
Soon came spin-offs like Himesh Doing Things. Exhibit A: Himesh as a gym bro downing protein. Exhibit B: Himesh slow-walking through a desert in a black trench coat embodying global warming. Exhibit C: Himesh licking his lips diagonally for the first time. “I love it,” he says about his meme-ification. His listeners, he insists, were always there at parties, weddings and clubs. “Even when the films didn’t work.”
Every singer, he argues, has a USP. The nasal twang is his. “It’s not a gimmick,” he insists, but a lineage. “Even Kishore da (Kumar) loved K L Saigal saab, who was nasal. Our roots have always been nasal.”
But the “real Himesh” he explains, is about smuggling complex ragas to unsuspecting masses, the way a parent sneaks veggies into a child’s sandwich. “Sometimes it’s a pure raga, sometimes a mishra raga. Sanam Mere Humraaz, for instance, was raga Bhairav in disguise,” he holds forth. His trick, he says, is simplifying India’s musical DNA until everyone can hum it on the bus.
Something he learnt from his father, composer Vipin Reshammiya, one of the first to plug electronica into Bollywood. “Composing was in my blood. But he taught me how to compose for the common man with high-standard notes.” Armed with that formula, Reshammiya built himself an arsenal of 350 songs — tragic ballads, shaadi bangers, heartbreak anthems — you name it.
He has his own homegrown focus group of family, neighbours, school friends. He plays them a tune, watches their reactions, and sorts the track into cool urban, desi, or universal. If they love it, it stays. If they don’t, it gets tweaked until they do. He now has a library of more than 2,000 songs. “Even today, I compose one a day.”
The point, he adds, was never to stay a ‘panchwa gayak’ (fifth backup singer).” Playback felt too small a box. “Michael Jackson never sang for Tom Cruise, did he?” His ambition was to be “a complete package. Voice, composition, visual character.” His signature chant: “Jai Mata di, let’s rock!” is part of the package, and it works equally well in stadiums, on Instagram, and at Vaishno Devi, where he’s performed half a dozen jagrans in recent years.
But his way back into the public imagination was ‘Badass Ravi Kumar’, a retro ’80s-type action film released in February where he leans into his memes, sprinting across Florence’s Duomo roof, slicing villains in half, and gnawing on an unlit cigarette because the line goes: ‘Woh cigarette peeta nahi hai par cigarette ke bina jeeta nahi hai (He doesn’t smoke but can’t live without his cigarette).’ “The film’s tagline was ‘logic is optional’,” he deadpans.
And it lived up to it. It’s the sort of absurd that saw fans on Reddit and elsewhere induct ‘Badass Ravi Kumar’ into the “so-bad-it’s-good” hall of fame. The Rs 20-crore film made over Rs 25 crore in its first run and unleashed the sort of delirium in theatres that big stars now crave as multiplex footfalls thin. Apparently, OTT platforms are now fighting over rights. “I just needed one film to give me that ‘hit actor’ tag that connected with the youth,” he says, fully aware that Gen Z discovered Ravi Kumar first and only later dug into Reshammiya’s catalogue of nasal bangers.
In a curious prequel to his pop stardom, while most 17-year-olds were solving algebra, “I produced my first Hindi show, ‘Andaz’ in the ’80s,” he recalls, starring heavyweights like Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Poonam Dhillon, Prem Chopra and others.
Ask Reshammiya about hobbies, and he valiantly says, “Cricket and board games.” His wife, sitting nearby, cuts in. “He’s giving you fakeology! Basically, he eats, sleeps, drinks, travels, dreams only films. He has no hobbies!”
Reshammiya laughs but doesn’t protest too hard. “We’re lucky that our hobby is our profession.” If Sonia keeps him grounded, she’s also the reason his cap matches his cape. “She’s my stylist and says heads should turn when I enter a room. My curated look and fitness are part of the job.”
So, what other summits does he want to scale? “I’m a very bad dancer,” he admits, “but I’m going to learn so that in ten years I can perform with a six-pack.” Before you raise an eyebrow, he talks about his next project: “An English-language global pop blockbuster.” He says he’s already written and sung 15 tracks, due this December.
And will it be nasal? He doesn’t flinch. “See, my basic texture will always be there. But the grammar, production, composition… those will be genuinely international.”
The nose, it turns out, knows no borders.
I prayed to God to give me a way back to Bollywood. He gave me Badass Ravi Kumar-Keith Gomes

One would expect Keith Gomes to helm another mainstream entertainer after Badass Ravi Kumar, the spoof film led by Himesh Reshammiya. Instead, the director is returning to his roots of independent cinema. That is what he is inclined towards, insists Gomes, as his short film Dear Men — that shines a spotlight on child trafficking in India — releases today.
“I wanted to make a documentary on a community in North India, where they [give away] their daughters to the highest bidder. So, it’s a kind of prostitution, but parents do it to their own children. Then I met a friend, who told me a rescue story [involving] him.”
Dear Men is inspired by the true story of Dipesh Tank, who risked his life to save minor girls from trafficking. The director adds, “I got greedy to make it. So, that became the film.”
Set in Bihar, the short film stars Sayani Gupta, Gyan Prakash, and Mayukh Ray. Considering human trafficking continues to be a rampant social evil, Gomes, at one point, considered making a feature film on the same story. Noting that this was before he made Badass Ravi Kumar, the director reveals that he pitched the idea to several actors.
“I narrated it to Sanya [Malhotra] and Rashmika [Mandanna]. But the film just couldn’t happen. I gave up and prayed to God to give me a way back to Bollywood. He gave me Badass Ravi Kumar.”

SANAM TERI KASAM IS A SURPRISE SUCCESS; WILL CHHAAVA FOLLOW SUIT?
The last week was unbelievable for the industry. The re-release trend is going on strongly but the way Sanam Teri Kasam performed took everyone by storm. Everyone hoped that it would open better than what its opening number was in the original run, that is, Rs. 1.12 crores. However, the film managed to have an opening of Rs. 4 crores! The collections jumped to Rs. 5.25 crores on Saturday and Rs. 6 crores on Sunday. It held well on Monday and Tuesday, collecting Rs. 3.15 crores and Rs. 2.75 crores respectively. If it manages to maintain strong collections in its second week, it can have a lifetime of Rs. 40 crores. Simply historic!
Badass Ravi Kumar, meanwhile, opened under expectations as it didn’t jump post afternoon on the first day. It collected Rs. 2.25 crores on Friday. It dropped to Rs. 1.75 crores on Saturday and further on Sunday, collecting Rs. 1.25 crores. On Monday, it crashed to Rs. 25 lakhs. Loveyapa, meanwhile, is a flop but has held better than Badass Ravi Kumar. At some point, it’ll go past the Himesh Reshammiya-starrer, which was not expected at all.
The other re-release of last week, Interstellar, on the other hand, opened as per expectations at Rs. 2.70 crores. It collected Rs. 3.80 crores on Saturday, Rs. 4 crores on Sunday, Rs. 2 crores on Monday, Rs. 1.85 crores on Tuesday and Rs. 1.67 crores on Wednesday. Thus, its first week collections will be around Rs. 18 crores. Sadly, it only has a one-week run and will be pulled out from cinemas from February 14. If that was not the case, it would have collected Rs. 25 crores or even Rs. 30 crores.
Meanwhile, all eyes are now on Chhaava. It stars Vicky Kaushal, Rashmika Mandanna and Akshaye Khanna and is about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The teaser was released during Stree 2 in August 2024 and got a roaring response. There's a lot of excitement surrounding it and it would lead to a healthy opening, possibly of Rs. 20 crores plus.
What goes against the film is its Maharashtra flavour; it often leads to limited business in the North and East. Also, it's not an ideal Valentine’s Day film but this factor shouldn’t affect the film much.
Captain America: Brave New World is the big Hollywood release of the week. The ticket sales haven’t been great and hopefully, it’ll open in the range of Rs. 7-8 crores.

Sanam Teri Kasam's re-release proves to be financial success: "Initial release had resulted in Rs 25 crore loss"

With Sanam Teri Kasam re-releasing in 400 screens, trade analysts expect an increase in shows amid the film’s unexpected popularity and low buzz around new movies
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; February 8, 2025)
It’s almost impossible to predict the box office. The film industry saw it last year as the audience warmly welcomed re-releases, with Laila Majnu —a washout upon its original release in 2018—becoming a hit during its second run. It looks like Sanam Teri Kasam (2016) may have a similar fate. As the Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra Hocane-starrer re-released yesterday, producer Deepak Mukut said that the film’s screen count was originally finalized at 60, but was increased after seeing the audience demand.
“We had no plans to re-release the film, but about 70 fans came to our office and requested that we release it in the Valentine week. Initially, I was very unsure as the competition is high with Deva, and Loveyapa,” said Mukut, adding that the strong advance booking on online booking platforms has left him surprised.
“While the film’s 2016 release had resulted in a Rs 25 crore loss, the re-release has proven to be a financial success. We have almost 400 screens across 350 cinemas. Exhibitors have been increasing shows organically.”
While the love story had a poor run on its release, it gained a following over the years after its OTT release. But that isn’t the only factor driving its opening in theatres. Trade expert Girish Wankhede says the lack of buzz around the new movies has further helped it.
Wankhede says, “Badass Ravi Kumar is doing reasonably well, but Loveyapa has started slow. The new releases aren’t tracking as well. Sanam Teri Kasam has opened well. One can predict only after Saturday how many screens it will be increased to.”
Bihar-based exhibitor Vishek Chauhan says that while he had allotted one show during advance booking in his theatres in Patna and Gaya, he increased it to 80 by the time the film opened yesterday. “[After the rise in shows], I traced back and figured that a few months ago, some influencers convinced the producer to re-release the film. With Friday being Rose Day and Valentine’s Day around the corner, young people, who had never watched it in a theatre, made it a FOMO experience. This isn’t a case of corporate booking, young couples are coming to the film. Our Friday, Saturday and Sunday shows are sold out. So far, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani [2013] opened the highest at Rs 1.5 crore, among re-releases. This one can be estimated to go as big as Rs 8 crore. Loveyapa will struggle to make it to Rs 1.5 crore,” he says.
This is the first time in my career that I have been trolled-Kirti Kulhari

Stating that a section of the audience is judging her for Badass Ravi Kumar, Kirti Kulhari says she starred in the spoof action comedy to challenge her own perception of being a serious actor
Priyanka Sharma (MID-DAY; February 8, 2025)
Why her?” That was the question many viewers had after watching Kirti Kulhari in Badass Ravi Kumar’s trailer. Interestingly, the actor too had a similar question—“Why me?”—when actor-musician Himesh Reshammiya offered her a role in the Keith Gomes-directed spoof action comedy. After all, Badass Ravi Kumar was wildly different from the powerful stories, like Shaitaan (2011), Pink (2016) and Criminal Justice: Behind Closed Doors (2020), that Kulhari has leaned towards in her 15-year career.
“I was shocked. But Himesh told me, ‘I need an actor for this role.’ I was flattered that he thought of me for his film,” she smiles.
Kulhari laughs that her hairdo, a short bob at the time, was another reason why Reshammiya thought she would be the perfect fit to play a glamorous assassin. She recalls, “He said, ‘I really like your hairstyle. I want that look for the part.’”
The actor knew that the audience would be surprised to see her in the action comedy that demands suspension of logic. She viewed it not as a deterrent, but as an opportunity to challenge the audience’s perception of her. More importantly, she wanted to challenge her own biases about the kind of actor she wants to be.
“I am seen as a serious actor. But I realized that I didn’t want any strict notions about me, not just from the audience, but also myself. I wanted to shatter any judgment I harboured for spoof films. I also wanted to break the perception I had of myself as an actor. Until a few years ago, I wouldn’t have said yes to a film like this.”
In the days between the trailer’s release and the film hitting the marquee, Kulhari got it all, from compliments to criticism. “People are telling me that I’m looking hot. I’m surprised by it because I had a glam look in Four More Shots Please! There are also many comments where people have criticized me. In fact, this is the first time in my career that I have been trolled. People have written, ‘Aisi bhi kya majboori thi [that you had to do this film]?’ When you’re used to being praised for your work, this feels like a different experience. I asked myself if I was at ease receiving criticism, and the answer was yes. It felt freeing.”
(Crisp) Movie Review: BADASS RAVI KUMAR by FENIL SETA

Badass Ravi Kumar begins with a smart disclaimer, stating 'logic is optional'. It makes it clear that don't expect any sensible stuff in the film and just enjoy the crazy ride. Soon, you see that the film is set in 1989 and yet, the cars depicted are of the present day. And you don't mind it as, after all, logic is optional! The film is replete with over-the-top scenes, whistle-worthy dialogues, mass-appealing moments and of course, a superb soundtrack. It was so good to see a film with nearly a dozen songs after ages and most of the tracks are damn good, especially 'Dil Ke Taj Mahal Meinn' and 'Hookstep Hookah Bar'. On the flipside, the direction and editing are haphazard and hamper the impact. In some places, things happen at random and the makers should have been a little more imaginative. Also, at one point, 5-6 songs are played back-to-back for no reason. After the fourth song, it makes for a tedious watch. Himesh Reshammiya is dashing and his acting is terrific. The way he plays to the gallery is seen to be believed. Prabhudheva is over the top but it works for his villainous role. Kirti Kulhari looks sizzling and leaves a huge mark. Anil George (Bhujang), Rajesh Sharma, Saurabh Sachdeva, Manish Wadhwa, Prashant Narayanan, Mustafa Askari (Raftaar), Navneet Nishan and Sulbha Arya leave a mark in supporting roles. Johny Lever and Sanjay Mishra are okay while Sunny Leone is fine in a cameo. Simona J looks pretty but doesn’t act properly. All in all, Badass Ravi Kumar is a dhamaal entertainer but it's compulsory to keep your brains aside and watch it.

HIMESH RESHAMMIYA, CHRISTOPHER NOLAN, HARSHVARDHAN RANE ALL SET TO RULE THE BOX OFFICE
The coming week will prove to be an interesting one as a mix of new and old releases will spring a surprise at the ticket window. Regarding the new films, the biggest one will be Badass Ravi Kumar. It stars Himesh Reshammiya and there’s tremendous excitement to see this flick. The film was announced way back in 2022. The trailer of the film finally dropped on January 5 this year and it got a terrific response. The trailer is full of over-the-top dialogues and action scenes.
What has worked is that this time, Himesh is simply having fun, unlike before when he was trying to be a serious actor. With Badass Ravi Kumar, viewers can sense that it’s like a spoof film and that has impressed them. Moreover, the songs have caught on big time. A surprising aspect is that Himesh Reshammiya has not done a single on-ground promotional activity. He has not given any interviews. Yet, the film has managed to create noise which proves that sometimes a superb trailer and hit songs can do the trick.
The film is all set to open in the range of Rs. 5 crores with an outside chance of it hitting the Rs. 6 crore mark. This will be huge for this film as Himesh Reshammiya’s movies have never opened beyond Rs. 2 crores. The distributors opted for a smart strategy of pricing tickets at a maximum rate of Rs. 150. Hence, many moviegoers have been tempted to book their tickets.
The same price strategy has also been adopted by the makers of Loveyapa. It is the remake of the 2022 super-hit Tamil film Love Today and stars Junaid Khan and Khushi Kapoor. The film rests on an interesting premise and the trailer is entertaining. But it hasn’t clicked well with the audience. Junaid faced trolling during the promotions after his awkward dance videos went viral.
The advance of Loveyapa is very poor and one can hope that it should at least cross the Rs. 1 crore mark. The ticket sales are sluggish despite the cheaper prices. This is because the moviegoers are spoilt for choice this Friday due to Badass Ravi Kumar and re-releases, which look far more exciting. Ideally, Loveyapa should have been released 2 or 3 weeks later when the competition was not this intense.
Speaking of re-releases, Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar has sprung a surprise. Its advance booking began 20 days ago and the tickets have sold like hot cakes since then. It is all set to open in the range of Rs. 4-5 crores and hence, will give a tough competition to Badass Ravi Kumar.
Another major re-release of the week is Sanam Teri Kasam. The film didn’t do well in cinemas in 2016 but it achieved a cult following over the years. Not many expected it to get a huge advance but it has managed to do the unthinkable. The film has got a wide release and it remains to be seen if it can go beyond Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’s re-release first-day collections of Rs. 1.10 crore. If it does, it’ll become the second-highest re-release Hindi opener after Tumbbad (Rs. 1.50 crores). By doing so, it’ll also cross the first-day figures of Sanam Teri Kasam’s original release, which were Rs. 1.12 crore.
Padmaavat was re-released today while Bareilly Ki Barfi will re-release tomorrow. However, both these films will fail to get the desired number of footfalls.
