Abhijeet Bhattacharya reacts to Dua Lipa sampling Woh Ladki Jo: "Kya karenge credit leke?"

When singer Dua Lipa did a mashup of the Hindi song, Woh Ladki Jo Sab Se Alag Hai (Baadshah, 1999) and her own track Levitating during her Mumbai concert on Saturday, it set the internet abuzz. But along came a rather uncomfortable question: Who should be credited for the song? Actor Shah Rukh Khan, singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya, or composer Anu Malik?
On his part, Bhattacharya feels that the controversy is uncalled for. “Dua was made to understand that this song is Shah Rukh’s. Usne socha hoga jaise woh (singer) hai waise hi Shah Rukh hain. Nobody told her Shah Rukh is a superstar like Sylvester Stallone; he has not sung the song, it’s Abhijeet Bhattacharya. Uski galti nahin hai.”
The singer adds, “When the song started playing at her concert, my phone was flooded with calls. They said, ‘aapka gaana’. Credit lene ki zaroorat nahin hai, kya karenge credit leke ab? The song was not as popular then as it is now, after the mashup by (DJ) Ruchir went viral.”
Bhattacharya says that the song’s “biggest plus point” is that it features Khan. “Meri aur SRK ki koi problem nahin hai. I am sure he, too, is amused with whatever is happening.”
The singer’s son, Jay, however, was unhappy about his father not being given due credit and expressed it on Instagram. On that, Bhattacharya remarks, “He can never imagine that this is not his father’s song. For example, Khai Ke Paan Banaras Wala in Don (1978) is (singer) Kishore Kumar’s song, but (actor) Amitabh Bachchan’s fans will say it’s his song.”

Dua Lipa’s fans in India were in for a surprise when the singer-songwriter performed a mash-up of Levitating and Badshah (1999) track, Woh Ladki Jo Sabse Alag Hai, at her November 30 concert in Mumbai. But what began as Lipa’s nod to Bollywood quickly turned into a war of credits. In an Instagram post, Jay Bhattacharya criticized how it was being projected as a Shah Rukh Khan number with no credit to his singer-father Abhijeet Bhattacharya, who lent his voice to the track. Khan’s fan clubs countered his argument, stating that it was the actor’s stardom that made Lipa perform to it.
When mid-day reached out to Abhijeet, the man at the center of the controversy, he unequivocally stated that singers are the backbone of songs.
“When we hear Lag Jaa Gale, whom do we recall—the actress [Sadhana] or the singer, Lata Mangeshkar? Chingari Koi Bhadke is remembered as a Kishore Kumar song, not a Rajesh Khanna one. Nobody remembers the hero. Why did Dua Lipa choose Woh Ladki Jo among bigger hits of Shah Rukh? Because this was a mash-up that Ruchir Kulkarni had created in 2022, and I had sung it. The song became so viral that I got calls from the US,” asserted the singer.
Abhijeet said he was flooded with calls from people who attended the concert on Saturday. “They all told me, ‘Dada, it’s your song’. It’s the power of the song and the creators behind it—Anu Malik [composer], Javed Akhtar [lyricist] and sung by me,” he emphasised.
Does he think singers are invisibilized in India? It could be true of some, but not him, he said. “Dua Lipa doesn’t know that the hero, lyricist and playback singers are different in India as she sings and composes herself. If today some singers are invisible, it is because the media doesn’t cover all of them. But I’m not in their position. If I announce my shows today, all the front row seats are a sell-out on the first day. If I get 100 offers, I refuse 80.”
As Jay’s post sparked off a credit war, Abhijeet was unfazed by the episode. He said, “Jay’s post was not about getting recognition, but about giving credit and Dua didn’t know to whom she had to give credit. She didn’t say anything. The netizens and media have created the controversy. I didn’t feel hurt or disappointed that I didn’t get credit. SRK, Dua or I don’t want credit for it. Shah Rukh and I are two tigers who are not bothered by all this. The war is going on between the two fan groups. That’s because today, some people are more focused on stars. If Dua Lipa has fans, I have millions of fans too who are fighting for my credit. Obviously, Shah Rukh’s followers are a million times more than mine.”

Twenty-five years after it released, Abbas-Mustan’saction comedy Baadshah, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Twinkle Khanna, continues to have a cult fan following. A major chunk of this appeal owes itself to the film’s music, especially the title song, which was composed by Anu Malik.
“The title track, Baadshah O Baadshah, has a great recall value for me. In fact, I had hummed this tune to Shah Rukh on the flight with different words. He fell in love with the tune and then we thought of the word Baadshah. When Abbas-Mustan heard the idea, they felt that it goes with the title track. SRK earned the monikers King Khan and Baadshah after this song,” recalls Malik, who had previously scored for an SRK film in 1994 (Baazigar).
The composer also credits the director duo’s “interesting and unique” storytelling for the film’s success. “They bring a lot of thrill and suspense in their films. For Baadshah, everything fell into place perfectly, including the star cast. It was a team effort that paid off, and the film rightly deserves to be relevant 25 years later.”
The music composer is “proud” of the work he has done in the years following the film. “It is a huge milestone — bahut hote hain 25 saal. It is an achievement for any artiste to know that their work has completed so many years. It makes me happy that I have made music that continues to make people happy even 25 years later,” the 63-year-old ends.

Badshah clears the air after calling Kartik Aaryan an ‘overrated’ actor; also admits that he is still unsure about his own acting career

Badshah tops the Bollywood hit list with chartbusters like Kapoor & Sons’ “Kar Gayi Chull”, “The Humma Song” from OK Jaanu and “Tareefan” from Veere Di Wedding. Now, the musician-singer makes his acting debut as a pop star in Khandaani Shafakhana. Quiz him on how the makers coaxed him to face the camera for a feature film and he laughs, “They actually had to ‘coax’ me. It all began when Mrig sir (Mrighdeep Singh Lamba, who is producing the film with Bhushan Kumar and Mahaveer Jain) narrated the script to me. I liked what I heard and went with the flow. I still don’t know how I finished the film. Sonakshi (Sinha), Choocha (Varun Sharma), Shilpi ma’am (director Shilpi Dasgupta) and Mrig sir all helped. In fact, it was Sonakshi who, when I confided in her about the acting offers I was getting, told me to go for it. And now, I am making my debut with her.”As part of his prep, Mrighdeep helped him create a back story for his character Gabru, who comes from a small village in Punjab and changes once he makes it big. Quiz Badshah on his career choices and he reveals that he wanted to be an astronaut, a basketball player and even an administrative officer at different points in his life, though music was always his first love and acting never figured in the list. Is he open to more turns in front of the camera now? He confides that he’s not sure though he has liked another script. “I will take the scripts to someone who knows better, then take a call. Meanwhile, I’ll make a lot of music,” he smiles.
Badshah begun his music career as ‘Cool Equal’ and informs that this was his E-mail ID. Soon after, he realised that he needed a better stage name. Shah Rukh Khan’s film Baadshah had released around the time and being a die-hard fan of the actor, he named himself after its grandiose title.
He was in the news recently after referring to Kartik Aaryan as an “overrated” actor on Karan Johar’s talk show. Bring it up and he guffaws, “I don’t know why I named him, maybe because we were talking about Kartik during the break. It just came out but the fact is that he is a brilliant actor with a very good script sense. When I told Kartik, I was acting, he joked, ‘Beta, ab tu dekh.’”
Badshah recently rapped for Salman Khan’s Dabangg 3 song “Munna Badnaam Hua” and says he loves being around the actor. “Salman sir’s parties are among the best in town. Composers Sajid sir and Wajid sir were kind enough to call me, I’ve even written some of the lyrics. It will be one of the biggest songs of the year,” he promises with a smile.
Baadshah actor Kiran Zaveri Bhatia turns writer-director with family comedy

Kiran Zaveri Bhatia is still remembered as the girl who played Mamik’s shy girlfriend in Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. She also had a cameo in the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer, Baadshah, apart from playing the lead in Roshni.Other than acting, Kiran started exploring various aspects of filmmaking at her production house, Woodpecker Movies. Currently the Content-Alliance Head at the banner, she turned producer with Motichoor Chaknachoor (in association with Viacom 18). She is also backing films like Bole Chudiyan (directed by Shamas Siddiqui), Rusty Aur Dusty (helmed by Glen Baretto) and Pyaar Ka Achaar (directed by Navneet Baj Saini).
And now, she is all set to become a writer-director with the upcoming film, Haveli Mai Hungama. Kiran says, “The film is a whacky family entertainer. It revolves around two Marwari families, and aims to expose the double standards, hypocrisy and suppression of women in Indian households. At the same time, we have been careful not to hurt anybody’s sensibilities or sentiments.” Kiran, who hails from the Marwari community, has added her observations and experiences from her growing-up years to lend a realistic touch to the story.Though she is donning multiple hats, Kiran has not quit acting. She shares, “Acting is and will always be my first love and I am passionate about it.” In fact, Kiran will soon be seen in a movie, which revolves around four characters and their lives. She elaborates, “It’s an intense and interesting story of power, greed, obsession and the life beyond. All the four characters are equally important.”
So, will she act only in her home productions? She replies, “Why would I restrict myself? Cinema is going through an exciting phase with many young and emerging talents. As an actor, it would be silly on my part to restrict myself to my home productions.”
Meanwhile, Kiran’s production house is also entering the digital platform with the series, The Consent, The Deal.
