WILL SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY CROSS THE RS. 500 CRORE MARK?
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is on a dream run at present and its weekend performance was beyond anyone’s expectations. The industry was hoping it could break the long-standing record of Avengers: Endgame. That film opened at Rs. 53.50 crores and was the highest opener for Hollywood in India. Meanwhile, Spider-Man: Brand New Day went way ahead and collected a huge Rs. 60 crores on Thursday, July 30, the day of release.
On the second day, Friday, the film had a normal drop and yet collected Rs. 48 crores. The collections jumped to Rs. 68 crores on Saturday. Usually, Hollywood films drop on Sunday or remain at the same level as Saturday. But Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned Rs. 76 crores, shocking the trade and industry.
On Monday, Spider-Man: Brand New Day dropped more than 50%, earning Rs. 23 crores. But this was fine as it was coming off a historic weekend. After collecting Rs. 21 crores on Tuesday, the superhero film had another drop on Wednesday when it collected Rs. 15 crores. This drop is slightly alarming.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has earned Rs. 311 crores until Wednesday and its first week collections would be around Rs. 323-324 crores. Looking at the weekend performance, it was expected that the film had a chance of crossing the Rs. 500 crore mark. But now, with the drop, that seems unlikely. However, all hope is not lost. If it sees another dramatic jump in the second week and then holds during the weekdays, it can still have a chance of entering the coveted Rs. 500 crore club.
Nevertheless, the job is done. In the second week, it’ll cross the approx. Rs. 380 crore figure of Avatar: The Way Of Water and emerge as the highest Hollywood-grossing film of all time in India.

WILL SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY BREAK AVENGERS: ENDGAME’S LONG-STANDING DAY 1 RECORD?
Tomorrow, July 30, will see the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and the excitement surrounding it is historic, to say the least. It has been a long time since a Hollywood film generated such widespread craze in India. The recently-released The Odyssey also witnessed a tremendous rush, but its demand was largely concentrated in urban centres. Spider-Man: Brand New Day, meanwhile, is attracting phenomenal interest across North, South, East and West India, and in urban centres and mass pockets alike.
The advance booking opened way back on June 17. In just 24 hours, 45,000 tickets for the film were sold, which proved that there was a huge demand to see the superhero flick. The expectation was that the film would open at around Rs. 40-45 crores. However, the demand kept on increasing as the release date neared. As a result, the film can now have an astonishing opening of more than Rs. 50 crores.
The trade and industry are now excited to see if it can beat the long-standing record of Avengers: Endgame. That film opened at Rs. 53.50 crores and since more than 7 years, it holds the record of the highest Hollywood opener of India. The craze for Avengers: Endgame was unbelievable and seems like Spider-Man: Brand New Day is also in the same boat.
It was said that there’s superhero fatigue, and it is indeed true. At the same time, Spider-Man stands out. He’s the most popular superhero in India, as every film of the series with different actors have worked big time. The films of Spider-Man are easy to understand and the character itself is youthful and entertaining, which is why he has an insane following.
The last Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: No Way Home, opened at Rs. 32.75 crores in lockdown time when cinemas operated at 50% occupancy. Hence, now that the situation is normal, it was a given that Spider-Man: Brand New Day would open with a bang. That it would challenge the numbers of Avengers: Endgame was not expected.
At present, Spider-Man: No Way Home is the third-biggest Hollywood opener in India, while the second spot is occupied by Avatar: The Way Of Water, which opened at Rs. 40 crores. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is certain to surpass this figure. The fourth and fifth positions are occupied by Avengers: Infinity War, which opened at Rs. 31.25 crores, and Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness, which collected Rs. 28.75 crores on its opening day, respectively. In short, four of the five films on the list belong to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Considering the craze for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, one can only imagine the kind of opening that Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for release on December 18, could register. The MCU appears to be back in form, at least for now. If the studio plays its cards well, the subsequent films could also benefit from this renewed momentum and avoid the struggle to attract audiences that the franchise experienced over the last few years.
The top 5 biggest openers of Hollywood films in India
1. Avengers: Endgame - 53,50,00,000
2. Avatar: The Way Of Water - 40,00,00,000
3. Spider-Man: No Way Home - 32,75,00,000
4. Avengers: Infinity War - 31,25,00,000
5. Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness - 28,75,00,000

WILL AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH WORK DESPITE OPPOSITION FROM DHURANDHAR?
The biggest Hollywood film of the year, Avatar: Fire And Ash, is all set to release in cinemas tomorrow, December 19, and the excitement for it is tremendous. The earlier parts have been huge hits, with Avatar: The Way Of Water being the biggest Hollywood grosser of all time, collecting more than Rs. 375 crores. However, the third part has faced some issues.
Avatar: The Way Of Water had an advantage as it came 13 years after Avatar (2009). Hence, there was a huge demand to experience the world of Pandora on the big screen. Avatar: Fire And Ash, meanwhile, comes three years after the sequel, and that novelty value has diluted a bit. Moreover, the reviews from the Western press have been mixed. Consequently, the advance is not as huge as that of Avatar: The Way Of Water.
Nevertheless, if seen in isolation, Avatar: Fire And Ash’s advances will probably be the best of the year, if all goes well. It's all set for the biggest Hollywood opening of the year. Avatar: Fire And Ash is expected to open at around Rs. 28 crores, but as we have seen with biggies, spot bookings come into play big time. Hence, Avatar: Fire And Ash should collect more than Rs. 30 crores. It’ll be less than the Rs. 39.87 crores day 1 opening of Avatar: The Way Of Water.
The aim of Avatar: Fire And Ash is to grow well over the weekend and then maintain the momentum over the next two weeks. Two factors will come to its advantage – the festive season commences from this weekend and secondly, Avatar is a series that one has to experience in cinemas. It's not a film that one can skip in cinemas, thinking that it can be consumed later on OTT.
However, a major roadblock that the film will face is the Dhurandhar wave. It started on a slow note, but in the second weekend, it has overperformed, shocking the trade and industry. In week 1, it collected a huge Rs. 196.44 crores. But in week 2, it’ll collect nearly Rs. 240 crores. Hence, Dhurandhar is the first film to collect more than Rs. 200 crores in its second week. It’ll collect nearly Rs. 435-440 crores by the end of its second week. It’ll beat Rs. 500 crores by Saturday or Sunday and will soon beat Stree 2’s collections of Rs. 575 crores and emerge as the biggest Bollywood grosser of all time.
There is room for at least 150 IMAX theatres in India. We have 34-Giovanni Dolci

Market in a high-growth phase, co to deepen ties with filmmakers and take theatre count to 150
Javed Farooqui (THE ECONOMIC TIMES; November 20, 2025)
IMAX sees India entering a high-growth phase over the next two to three years, with momentum expected to build through 2025 as the company rolls out a larger slate and expands its national footprint amid rising demand for premium moviegoing. Despite being IMAX’s seventh-largest market worldwide, India remains significantly underpenetrated, a senior company official said.
Giovanni Dolci, Chief Commercial Officer at IMAX Corporation, said the company’s growth in India is being driven by structural improvements and scale. “We have actually increased our footprint by almost 60% since 2020,” he said, adding that IMAX has entered what he described as a “multiplier effect” in the country. “Once you reach a critical scale, things can only get better and better. And we feel we are at that point in India.”
Dolci told ET that IMAX’s year-to-date box office in India has reached 21.9 million dollars, driven by a mix of Hollywood and local-language releases. He said IMAX posted just over 9 million dollars in India box office in the September quarter, making it the company’s second-best quarter ever in the market after Q3 2023, which delivered 9.5 million dollars.
The rest of the year includes several high-visibility titles such as Avatar: Fire And Ash, Wicked: For Good, Zootopia 2, The Running Man and Predator: Badlands.
Audience appetite remains strong. “To the end of October, in local currency, considering only the same-store locations, the IMAX box office in India was up 78%, which is absolutely striking. It tells us there is a really strong appetite out there.”
Dolci said IMAX’s growth is supported by a more varied slate. “India is a country with such a diverse cinematic taste. The content mix has been extraordinary,” he said. The company’s top three titles ever in India are F1: The Movie, Oppenheimer and Avatar: The Way Of Water. “These are very different titles, but audiences acknowledge the added value that the IMAX format and the IMAX canvas can add.”
Anime has also become a dependable contributor. “There is a growing demand for anime and it is a universal trend,” he said, pointing to the performance of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which exceeded internal expectations across several territories.
Local-language content now represents a significant share of the company’s worldwide performance. “A third of our Q3 box office was coming from local-language content,” Dolci said. He expects this trend to strengthen in India. “Local language will continue to grow in significance and will continue to grow its share of our box office.”
IMAX is deepening its collaboration with Indian filmmakers. Dolci highlighted the upcoming S S Rajamouli film Varanasi, which will be shot with IMAX-certified cameras. “We want to craft relationships with the world’s best filmmakers to make sure that we can give them the tools and the canvas to put their vision on screen.”
Even as India rises within IMAX’s global rankings, Dolci sees substantial headroom. “There is room for at least 150 IMAX theatres in India. We have 34,” he said.
The company has nine contracted theatres awaiting installation, with a sizable portion expected to go live in 2026. While PVR INOX is the primary partner, IMAX has expanded into circuits such as Broadway Cinemas, Miraj Cinemas and Rajhans Cinemas.
Dolci said demand is increasingly visible in non-metro markets. “There are places where audiences are having to travel, sometimes even for hours, to get to the next available IMAX theatre,” he said. This is shaping the next phase of expansion.
Indian exhibitors have scaled up their own premium offerings, but Dolci said IMAX’s differentiation stems from the way content is created for the format. “You can put a powerful projector and a great seat and a great sound system in a theatre, and there is nothing wrong with that. But in IMAX, it is a completely different experience altogether because of the work that we do with the content.”
He added, “IMAX is a different version of the movie and it is something that none of the other formats can have or can show.”
Dolci said he does not forecast specific numbers but believes the next phase will be driven by a stronger slate, deeper filmmaker relationships and broader geographic distribution. “The opportunity for growth is extraordinary.”

Javed Farooqui (THE ECONOMIC TIMES; January 19, 2024)
Canada-headquartered IMAX Corporation achieved its highest box-office earnings in India in 2023, generating $23.1 million from both Hollywood and Indian films amid increase in admissions and ticket pricing, said a senior executive.
Globally, IMAX achieved its second-highest earnings in a year in 2023, with $1.06 billion in box-office collections.
“2023 was our best year at the Indian box office, with collections up 68% compared to 2019,” Giovanni Dolci, global chief sales officer, IMAX Corporation, told ET.
He said the 2023 box-office collections should be compared with the 2019 numbers since 2020, 2021 and 2022 were abnormal years for the exhibition industry owing to the Covid-19 pandemic-related disruptions.
IMAX’s box-office collections for Indian titles amounted to $6.46 million out of a total of $23.1 million, he said, adding that the company helped Indian films collect $15.74 million in global box-office receipts.
In 2023, Oppenheimer, Avatar: The Way Of Water, Jawan, Pathaan and Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning - Part One were the top five grossing films for IMAX in India, with collections of $6.1 million, $1.8 million, $1.6 million, $1.5 million and $1.2 million respectively.
Oppenheimer and Avatar: The Way Of Water became the highest-grossing films in India so far for IMAX. Among the Indian films, KGF - Chapter 2 continues to be the top grosser, with collections of $1.7 million, followed by Jawan ($1.6 million) and Pathaan ($1.5 million) respectively.
IMAX sees huge potential in India, the company's eighth-largest growth market in terms of box-office receipts. “We intend to continue on this growth path, and we see 2024 as another key year to enable this growth,” said Dolci.
In 2023, IMAX expanded its network by launching six screens and is awaiting licence approvals to install an additional nine screens. “We increased our network by over 42% in just one year and that shows the appetite that the company has for India,” he said.
IMAX has set a target of launching 100 screens in India by 2025, up from 27 at present, and plans to expand IMAX screens in emerging cities, provided the locations are suitable.
Dolci said IMAX is not just strengthening alliances with major cinema chains such as PVR Inox and Cinepolis but is also in discussions with other exhibitors interested in investing in IMAX technology.
The company also plans to increase content throughput by collaborating with local producers, filmmakers and distributors to release more Indian titles on the IMAX platform, he said.
“We released eight Indian films across languages last year; our objective is to release more than eight in 2024,” Dolci said.
The company's slate includes 30 international and Indian films in 2024. IMAX has two Indian films scheduled for release in January, including the Hrithik Roshan film Fighter, which will be released on January 25, and the Tamil action-adventure Captain Miller, which was released on January 12.
Gap between theatrical and OTT release gets longer and longer; Avatar: The Way Of Water out on OTT 170 days after release

The box office may not be back as to where it should be yet but its pretty clear now that bets are being placed on theatrical as the way forward. There was a time when the theatrical window had shortened and its was being said this would be the norm down the line.
But cut 18 months forward and the theatrical window is getting longer as can be seen by the time the major releases are taking to reach SVOD. Disney which is the undisputed number one studio in the world and has seen theatrical releases as soon as they were allowed post Covid is pushing the window longer and longer with each release. AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER saw an SVOD release only after 170 days although its available on PVOD at a prohibitive rate in most countries.
AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER is probably not the best example as its the biggest film out there and if the director had his way it would not be on streaming for years. A better comparison is that DOCTOR STRONG IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS released last May saw an SVOD release 47 days post theatrical release. Now. in 2023 those 47 days have gone to 89 days for ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA. It pretty much tells the way Disney is going despite having one of the biggest streaming platforms out there with Disney+.
In our industry there is no PVOD and so, its basically an eight weeks window now to SVOD and this is fine. But within the industry, there is still a belief in streaming with movies pushed that way and stars (mini) ready to work in web series which have and will be disasters in terms of the core Indian audience due to which their equity gets a double hit. One that you are available readily on TV and in episode format and secondly its pretty much crap in terms of the content liked by Indian audiences.
Simply put when a studio like Disney is placing bets on theatrical despite having a huge successful platform, then the message is pretty clear to one and all that theatrical must be sustained. Below are the days that major films have taken to reach SVOD (Subscription Video on Demand) and as can be seen the time gets longer and longer.
The release dates are in brackets.
Encanto (24 Nov 21) - 30 Days
Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness (06 May 22) - 47 Days
Thor: Love And Thunder (08 Jul 22) - 62 Days
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (11 Nov 22) - 82 Days
Avatar: The Way Of Water (16 Dec 22) - 170 Days
Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania (17 Feb 23) - 89 Days
It’s critical that Jack dies. The whole film Titanic leads up to that moment-James Cameron
11:12 PM
Posted by Fenil Seta

Renuka Vyavahare (BOMBAY TIMES; February 11, 2023)
The one thing that binds the greatest movies is their ability to stand the test of time. Twenty-five years after James Cameron made Titanic (1997), an epic tale of star-crossed lovers, forbidden attraction and class disparity set against the backdrop of a tragic historical event, it continues its reign as a celebrated love story. Leonardo DiCaprio’s effervescent Jack and Kate Winslet’s resilient Rose made us dream, hope, and believe that love can embolden you to stare death in the face if not melt icebergs.
On its 25th anniversary, the recipient of 11 Academy Awards, Titanic has returned to the big screen once again in a remastered version. On this occasion, master filmmaker James Cameron in an exclusive conversation with Bombay Times, revealed what Titanic truly symbolizes and looking back, would he change the much-discussed climax of the film. Read on...
From Titanic to Avatar and its recent sequel, a sentiment that has stayed constant in India is the proximity of your films’ emotional core to Indian cinema and our stories. How do you weigh in on this thought?
The only difference is that I don’t do a song and dance number at the end of a movie (smiles). I was talking to S S Rajamouli (at the Critics’ Choice Awards in Los Angeles) about RRR and how much I enjoyed the physical production, the beauty and spectacle that he had created in his film, but also the tension, the action and all the things that I like. That film made me think about the Indian film industry at large and how much I enjoy Indian films for those reasons – whether it is the emphasis on family, friendship, personal duty towards the people around you and all those things.
Have you seen Indian films, or are you familiar with Indian culture?
I have now, but I hadn’t when I was making Titanic 25 years ago. I visited India for the first time in 2010 and made a lot of new friends who are still in touch with me. I have paid a lot more attention to Indian cinema since then. The interesting thing was that we didn’t really have a strong release for Titanic in India when it was first released in 1997, because India was making so many of their own movies that you weren’t that interested in our films. Today, I can’t help but notice that India was one of our strongest territories for the new Avatar film (Avatar: The Way Of Water, 2022), so it’s a changing and expanding market.
But when the film released in India in the ’90s, we remember how there was a lot of curiosity around it and that it ran to packed theatres.
You may be right. I don’t remember. Let me go back and check on that, but I certainly can remember that India was not as big a player in the global marketplace for international films as it is today, or even as it was 13 years ago when the first Avatar (2009) film was released.
Looking back, is there any change that you would want to see in Titanic? Can Jack survive along with Rose, perhaps?
(Laughs) No. Let’s say somebody went up to William Shakespeare at the Globe theatre 25 years after they first did Romeo & Juliet and said, ‘Hey, do you think it’d be better if we restaged the play today and they both live at the end?’ What do you think his answer would have been? It’s critical that Jack dies! The whole film leads up to that moment; the whole theme of the movie is crystalized and resolved by that, so I wouldn’t want to change that. The only thing that I would change, if I had to change something, would be to make that damn raft a little smaller, so it wasn’t this long burning fan question (smiles).
Speaking of the burning fan question, wasn’t there room for two on that raft?
The correct answer to that is yes, there’s room for two (Jack and Rose), but had they both latched onto it, the raft would sink to a depth where they both would be exposed to freezing water and that would compromise her chances of surviving. As the film shows, Rose barely survives by a whisker as it is. So, the chances are they both would have died. We have done some forensic experimentation to analyze that scene and do a trade study, if you will, to see what our options were at that moment. This will be put out on a television channel in a few days and hopefully, that will resolve this long-standing query.
Eleven Oscars and a lifetime of love later, what according to you, lies at the heart of the Titanic? What makes this movie so timeless?
For me, at the heart of Titanic is love in the face of mortality. Titanic is about mortality, life and death. It’s about people making life-and-death decisions. It’s about actual history, about the men who stepped back from the lifeboats to ensure the survival of their loved ones. That’s part of the enduring fascination with Titanic. Telling a love story against the backdrop of a story that’s about our familial love, it doesn’t have to be a boy-girl romantic love. Love for anyone in our lives. We watch Titanic as a way of imagining… What would it be like for me in that situation? What would I do for love? Would I sacrifice myself for love in that final moment? That’s part of the enduring fascination for the movie Titanic and the actual history.

Second-highest collection sets stage for a record in 2023
Javed Farooqui (THE ECONOMIC TIMES; January 24, 2023)
Mumbai: Box-office receipts in India surpassed Rs. 10,000 crore in 2022, amounting to the second highest ever as filmgoers flocked to cinema halls with the easing of the Covid pandemic and potentially setting the stage for a record collection this year.
The gross box-office collection of Rs, 10,637 crore, according to a GroupM-Ormax Media report, was next only to Rs. 10,948 crore in the pre-pandemic 2019 and despite fewer than usual big-ticket releases by the Hindi film industry and theatre shutdowns in many parts of the country in January and February last year, said analysts.
Ormax Media CEO Shailesh Kapoor said 2023 looks even more promising given that the content pipeline for domestic and Hollywood films has streamlined after two years of Covid-19-led disruptions.
“2023 could be the best year ever for the film industry due to a strong content line-up across Hollywood, Bollywood and regional cinema,” Kapoor said.
Kapoor added that the box-office collection could hit Rs. 11,000-12,000 crore this year. GroupM-owned Interactive Television managing director Ajay Mehta said, “Definitely, 2023 has the potential to become the biggest year in terms of box-office collection on the back of a strong content slate. The fact that audiences are receptive to south Indian films that are dubbed in Hindi is an encouraging sign for the industry.”
Junglee Pictures CEO Amrita Pandey said four key trends emerged in 2022 in the Hindi film industry. “Movies across genres have done phenomenally well in theatres. The focus has shifted from star driven system to content-driven system. Trailers need to be fully authentic and true to the movie. The box office has been super polarized with a few Hindi movies that got big theatrical admissions have done spectacular business and the other movies have all seen underwhelming admissions,” she said.
Hindi films had a 33% share of the box office in 2022, according to the report, followed by Telugu (20%) and Tamil (16%). KGF - Chapter 2 topped charts with a box-office collection of 970 crore, followed by RRR (869 crore) and Avatar: The Way Of Water (471 crore).
The report highlighted that Hindi and Hollywood films underperformed in 2022 compared to 2019 even as the four southern film industries surpassed their 2019 collections, led by Telugu and Kannada films.
Hindi films saw a 27% decline in box-office collections, compared with 2019, to Rs 3,513 crore, whereas Telugu and Tamil box office collections jumped 53% and 18% to 2,145 crore and 1,724 crore, respectively.
Kapoor attributed the drop in collection for Hindi films to fewer mega releases in 2022 than in a normal year. “Disruption in flow of Hindi film releases is reflected in footfall and box-office collection,” he said, adding that “recovery in business was still strong considering the talk about the impact of over-the-top (OTT) platforms on cinema,” he said.
Avatar: The Way Of Water in South beats the Pongal/Sankranthi releases

AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER has beaten all the big South holiday releases as it finishes with a 189-190 crore nett from the South Indian territories. This is more than the four major South releases over the holiday period where the Telugu film WALTAIR VEERAYYA may turn out the biggest with around 160 crore nett but this is well short of the numbers of AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER.
Not only has AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER beaten these Pongal/Sankranthi releases but it is just outside the top ten grossing films ever in South India. The only films with bigger numbers are ENTHIRAN, BAAHUBALI: THE BEGINNING, BAAHUBALI 2: THE CONCLUSION, 2.0, ALA VAIKUNTHAPURRAMULOO, RRR, KGF - CHAPTER 2, VIKRAM, PONNIYIN SELVAN - PART 1 and KANTARA and these form the top ten and are listed in terms of release order.
The comparison between AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER and the holiday releases in South India (Nizam/Andhra, Tamil Nadu, Mysore/Karnataka, Kerala) is as follows.
Avatar: The Way Of Water - 190 crore
Waltair Veerayya - 160 crore
Varisu - 150 crore
Thunivu - 105 crore
Veera Simha Reddy - 90 crore
AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER has practically finished its run and collections will be as above while other film still running could earn a little more or less but it will still be short of the AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER's numbers.
Cinema Lover’s Day: Movie buffs rewatch recent favourite films

Niharika Lal (BOMBAY TIMES; January 22, 2023)
Moviegoers were in for a treat when theatres celebrated Cinema Lover’s Day on January 20 and offered tickets at Rs. 99. In Mumbai, many shows performed better than on regular days this month, while a couple of shows were housefull. However, as per cine experts, the day didn’t get as good a response as National Cinema Day, when 6 am shows were added to meet the demand.
PEOPLE DON’T MIND A MOVIE OUTING WHEN IT JUST COSTS Rs. 100
While attendance at movie theatres didn’t peak, most moviegoers were in theatres to rewatch some recent films. Rakesh Mehta, a businessman, says, “I took four of my family members for Drishyam 2 because the tickets were affordable. We really wanted to watch this film, but on a regular day, ticket prices are very high.”
Priya Salian, a college student, saw Avatar: The Way Of Water with her friends on Cinema Lovers Day. She says, “We had seen the movie and wanted to watch it again. When I got to know that the ticket prices would be Rs 99 on Friday, we jumped at the opportunity. However, I think that not many people knew about the discount on ticket prices, it should have been publicized more.”
Deepali Rao, a homemaker, agrees. She says, “I happened to be at a mall and got to know that the ticket prices were lowered for a day. It was tough to make a sudden plan. These things should be advertised better.”
‘SUCH DAYS ENTICE AUDIENCES BUT WE NEED GOOD MOVIES TOO’
Cine experts say that cinemas are trying to keep footfalls up by organising these special days. Girish Johar, producer and business analyst, says, “The major learning from National Cinema Day was that if ticket prices are comparatively low, then moviegoers will come to theatres. But there should be a movie good enough to watch, and that’s the reason this day was nothing like the last National Cinema Day.”
He adds, “But it definitely increases engagement. These activities help a lot, entice audiences and keep people in the habit of watching films at theatres.” Exhibitors also share that more such days will be celebrated from time to time in the future.
‘WOULDN’T HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE TO OFFER THIS IN COMING WEEKS WITH BIG RELEASES’
Even as the average cost of a movie ticket dipped last year, as compared to 2019, it went slightly up with major releases and reached its peak toward the end of 2022. Till 2019, a drop in ticket price was nearly unthinkable, but now cinemas are trying this model to attract footfall and sustain the business. Exhibitors say that Cinema Lover’s Day took inspiration from National Cinema Day and the overwhelming response to it.
An exhibitor says, “It was basically a strategy to attract more moviegoers on slow days. For the next few weeks, we have big releases lined up and offering this treat to moviegoers would not have been possible. Besides, due to few releases this month, we have witnessed a dull period at cinemas.”

Box Office India Trade Network
The year 2022 was bad year for original Hindi content but it was helped out by dubbed South films which mean business was only 30% down on 2019. Hollywood releases saw good numbers for the big films with regular content pretty much like the Hindi films and putting in lower numbers than regular content in 2019. AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER broke the record of AVENGERS: ENDGAME but it was down to the South circuits smashing records by distances while the business in many areas was good and not outstanding.
There were three films that crossed the 200 crore nett mark - THE KASHMIR FILES, DRISHYAM 2 and BRAHMASTRA. THE KASHMIR FILES number was not not organic with sponsored shows by political parties, corporates and individuals. But here even if 100 crore nett was organic, it is still an insane number for the film.
DRISHYAM 2 was the film of the year as far as original Hindi content is concerned and the face of it the film can be called an OTT film but the film was based around human relationships of a family and had brand value. The earlier DRISHYAM had worked on satellite and Maharashtra. DRISHYAM 2 went mad in Mahasrashtra recording numbers second to only KGF - CHAPTER 2 post pandemic and than includes all Hollywood releases as well.
KGF - CHAPTER 2 was the film of the year if we look at all the films. The film set the box office on fire from day one and there was no stopping the film as it racked up initial records at almost every centre in the Hindi circuits. This film, like BAAHUBALI, had seen insane results on satellite which meant huge reach of the film. RRR (South) BHOOL BHULAIYAA 2 which came in the first half of the year were also BLOCKBUSTER films.
KANTARA (South) also deserves a mention as it did huge business in Maharashtra as the regionality and story had takers there but if the film somehow managed respectable numbers in a Bengal or Punjab it was due to how the rural milieu was presented so well in the film which Hindi cinema is unable to do today. These areas would hardly care about the story or the myths of the film.
There are flop theatrical films put in the list before but as its one disaster after another one the flop tag is probably not as bad as it was before. The classifications of 2022 is as follows.
All Time Blockbuster

FIRST RELEASE OF 2023 FLOPS; PATHAAN’S ADVANCE GIVES HOPE; CINEMA LOVER’S DAY TO BOOST FOOTFALLS
Not much was expected from Kuttey, the first major Bollywood release of 2023. Yet, its dismal opening and lack of jump in collections did give a shock. The word of mouth was extremely mixed and moreover, it looked like a niche product. As a result, it’ll collect only around Rs. 3-3.25 crores in Week 1. Though the coming weekend is open, it’ll not be advantageous for the film.
The South films – Varisu and Thunivu – meanwhile did very well though due to the clash, the collections got affected for both. Varisu also saw a release in Hindi and the collections were underwhelming but it's better than that of Kuttey. It is set to collect Rs. 6 crores in Week 1 and its lifetime collections will be around Rs. 10 crores.
Tomorrow, two major films will be released. One is Akhanda’s Hindi version. The original Telugu version was released on December 2, 2021, and emerged as a smashing hit as its word of mouth was supremely positive. However, just like most South dubbed films, it is releasing with very minimal awareness. The hope is that it’ll grow with positive word of mouth and even sustain the Pathaan wave. The first day collections should be around Rs. 50-75 lakhs and might cross the Rs. 1 crore mark. If Hindi audiences also love the film, the film can see a huge jump on Saturday.
The other release is the Hollywood animated film, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish. Due to limited films in cinemas, it has got a very wide release. The collections can be strong in certain cities during the weekend.
Meanwhile, the collections on Friday, January 20, are expected to be encouraging as all theatres are celebrating Cinema Lovers Day. As part of the celebrations, prices of all shows would be just Rs. 99. The IMAX tickets are priced in the range of Rs. 199 and Rs. 299. Films like Avatar: The Way Of Water and the Marathi film Ved, starring Riteish Deshmukh, have got maximum bookings followed by Puss In Boots: The Last Wish and the Marathi film Vaalvi.
Lastly, the advance booking of Pathaan has taken a flying start. It has already sold 1 lakh tickets for the opening day. If all goes well, the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer will emerge as one of the biggest openers of all time. We’ll discuss this aspect in detail in the next edition of Bollywood Talk.

IMAX to speed up expansion in India after a Blockbuster 2022

Global entertainment technology co has set a 100-screen target for India in the next 5 yrs
Javed Farooqui (THE ECONOMIC TIMES; January 12, 2023)
Mumbai: Global entertainment tech company IMAX Corporation will be speeding up its market expansion plans in India after witnessing healthy growth in box office collections in 2022, a top company executive said.
IMAX Corporation CEO Richard Gelfond, who is on his fourth trip to India, said that the time is ripe to up its investments in the Indian market as 2022 was the best year for the company after 2019.
“It is the perfect time for IMAX to expand in India because the stars have lined up in the right way. Our box collection is up 41% in 2022 compared to 2019,” he told ET.
‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’, he said, has become IMAX’s highest grossing movie in India. “The movie generated $4 million and is still going very strong. Our per screen average in the country was $900,000 in 2022,” he added.
Gelfond said IMAX has set a 100-screen target for India in the next five years. “We have 23 screens open, and another 19 screens are in the backlog. We have targeted 100 screens in the next five years,” he said.
He noted that IMAX has 800 screens in China with another 200 screens in backlog. “India has a long way to go. It is hugely under screened,” he said.
The IMAX top boss said that the company’s biggest success in 2022 came in the form of local language films, which contributed 30% to the total box office collections. “We made a breakthrough in local language content in 2022. IMAX was perceived as a Hollywood-focussed brand. But now, people say it is a place to go for blockbuster movies whether it is Hollywood, Bollywood, or South Indian,” he added.
IMAX’s strategy to grow its business in India is three-fold, Gelfond revealed. The company will release more local language blockbuster films, open new screens, and go deeper by partnering with single screen theatres.
“We are going to double our bets on local language films. We did six local language films in 2022 and we intend to do 10-12 in 2023,” Gelfond said.
“We will be installing six theatres this year. We have 23 screens open, so six is about 25% growth in our network this year. We will also target some of the independent single-screen theatre operators around the country,” he noted.
IMAX will partner with real estate developers besides strengthening relationships with existing clients like PVR, Inox and Cinepolis. “Together, PVR and Inox will be financially much stronger than they were during the pandemic,” he said.
He also pointed out that Indian films are doing well in overseas markets by citing the example of Telugu film ‘RRR’, which he said collected $3.60 million in the US through IMAX.
“IMAX's involvement with Indian films is not just in India but also in other countries. Indian films do well in the Middle East, the US and the UK. We have helped the Indian film industry gain international exposure,” he said.

Following a slow down in its India business due to the covid-19 pandemic, IMAX Corp., which develops immersive cinema technologies and manufacturers cameras and projection systems, seeks to touch the 100-screen mark in five years in India.
At present, 23 IMAX theatres operate in India. It will add six screens in 2023. In 2020, the Canadian cinema firm had set out to achieve the goal by 2025.
IMAX will partner local studios and producers, and will float a programme to promote the use of IMAX cameras to shoot big-ticket movies.
IMAX offers 70-mm motion picture film format, and projection system, wherein screen image width is greater than the height of a screen.
In 2013, IMAX and Yash Raj Films had partnered to screen Dhoom 3 and Shekhar Kapur’s Paani, which was later shelved. Recognizing the importance of screening local content in India, and not just Hollywood movies in premium formats, IMAX is looking at enhancing homegrown output and even tied up for hits such as Ponniyin Selvan-1 and Brahmastra.
“Our strategy of doing Hollywood films was a good, but it limited. Many people want to watch films in their local languages, they want to watch the kind of films they’re used to. So I think that’s going to be one of the keys to breaking this market open," Richard Gelfond, chief executive officer, IMAX, said in an interview.
“It’s inevitable that we will do deals with some larger studios as time goes by. The other thing we would really like to do is to accelerate our camera programme since we’ve developed specific digital cameras. We have met some studios and filmmakers and are in an early stage to explore ways to partner some Indian companies in helping us manage the camera programme in India. Ideally, I would like to find a company that will help us roll out faster."
Gelfond said Coronavirus-led disruptions had slowed its global expansion plans, including for India. “Five years ago, I didn’t think there will be a pandemic that would close entire countries down for three years. Not just in India, but globally, out-of-home entertainment was shut, and slowed things down. There were also side effects of covid: mall development and moviemaking slowed and you couldn’t release films, and sets were closed . And if you think of India, theatres opened in March-April of last year." Gelfond said these were primary impediments, but India was always a challenging due to government permits, licensing and regulations.
To be sure, Covid has forced IMAX to reexamine its strategy. “In 2019, 2% of our box office in India was from local Indian content. In 2022, it rose to 30%," Gelfond said.
The firm expects to release 10-12 local films in 2023 such as the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Pathaan and Prabhas’ mythological film Adipurush.
“IMAX is a very exclusive solution that aims at getting the best on-screen experience, and is not a multiplex. So if we had 100 movies a year, that will not be feasible in the context of how we operate," Gelfond said explaining the relatively low output for IMAX screens.
Experts say some of IMAX’s bets may pay off. Film lovers are getting used to the convenience of watching multi-language content from within the comforts of their homes, theatres will have to lure them back through luxury formats such as plush auditoriums, larger and high-tech screens, as well as customized menus. It will obviously be at a higher ticket price, which at least a section of the audience will be willing to pay, they added.
“We take upfront payment, and a percentage of box office, from the exhibitor and a piece from studios. Putting an IMAX really helps the theatre brand and it doesn’t seem to take away people despite a higher price," Gelfond said.

2022 ENDS ON A SAD NOTE AS CIRKUS FLOPS
A lot was expected from Cirkus, the last big release of 2022. In last week’s edition, we informed readers that the advance booking of the film is not upto the mark. Yet, it seemed like the film will open in the range of Rs. 10-13 crores. We had mentioned that if it opens in single digits, it’ll be a shocker.
Sadly, the worst fears came true as the spot bookings didn’t pick up and Cirkus ended up with the first day collections of just Rs. 6.50 crores. The reports were bad and hence, it saw a drop on Saturday, when it collected Rs. 6.25 crores. On Sunday, due to the big Christmas holiday, the collections jumped to Rs. 8 crores, which was not enough. The weekend collections, hence, were just Rs. 20.75 crores and this ideally should have been its first day earnings.
On Monday, Avatar: The Way Of Water and Drishyam 2 picked up but Cirkus had more than a 50% drop as compared to Friday. On its fourth day, it collected Rs. 2.75 crores. The collections in the next three days remained steady. This was a surprise as usually, a rejected film keeps falling with each passing day. Cirkus, however, is probably having an advantage of the holiday season. Hence, it might have some sort of respectable collections in the coming weekend, with the big January 1 holiday falling on Sunday. From Monday, January 2, however, it will have a major drop. While the first week's collections will be in the range of Rs. 30 crores, it now remains to be seen if it's able to cross the Rs. 40 crores mark in its lifetime.
2022 has not been a good year for the Hindi film industry as several biggies flopped. Drishyam 2’s surprise blockbuster success had given hope and all eyes were on Cirkus. What’s worse is that there’s no major release till Republic Day, when Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan arrives in cinemas. Fortunately, the theatres are safe as they’ll be playing Avatar: The Way Of Water. It held very well in the second week and by Thursday, it would have collected Rs. 285 crores at the Indian box office. It is expected to see another jump in the festive weekend when it’ll enter the Rs. 300 crores club.
Meanwhile, a Marathi film, Ved, will release tomorrow in Maharashtra and a few other centres. It marks the directorial debut of Riteish Deshmukh. The film also features him as an actor and his wife Genelia Deshmukh along with Jiya Shankar. Riteish and Genelia have also produced the movie. It is the remake of the 2019 Telugu film Majili, starring Naga Chaitanya and Samantha Ruth Prabhu. The film has got decent advances and it can grow big time if the word of mouth is positive. Due to the debacle of Cirkus, it has got additional shows. A highlight of the film is the cameo of Salman Khan in the song ‘Ved Lavlay’.

National Cinema Day, blockbusters run of films prove that appetite to watch films in cinemas is still very much there

From the first lockdown in March 2020 to the first half of 2022, whether moviegoers will return to cinemas like in pre-pandemic years remained a big question. But India’s first ever National Cinema Day, coupled with quite a few blockbusters, proved that the appetite to watch films in cinemas is still very much there
BOMBAY TIMES (December 24, 2022)
Sitting in a darkened cinema hall with friends and family, popcorn in hand, enjoying the latest releases – an activity we all took for granted became a distant memory during the two years of Coronavirus. Overnight, the century-old pastime became a safety hazard.
In 2022, when it was finally safe to go to cinemas and there was a slew of releases, the box office saw more duds than hits. There was debate over whether cinemas are relevant in the post-pandemic world. Now, as we approach the end of 2022, with major Hollywood films having sold out opening weeks and south blockbusters raking in the moolah, box office analysts say there is enough evidence to show that the pandemic-induced phase of struggle is finally over.
Executives of pandemic-battered movie theaters say that after surviving this three-year battle, even though they do not have all the answers yet, one thing is certain: audiences are back to cinemas as you can’t bring halls home.
--------------------------------------------------------
Price drop on National Cinema Day a success
Niharika Lal (BOMBAY TIMES; December 24, 2022)
After theatres in the USA and the UK slashed ticket prices on their National Cinema Day on September 3, the Multiplex Association of India (MAI) and cinemas across the country decided to follow suit, by celebrating National Cinema Day in India on September 23 with tickets priced at 75 (a considerable drop from the average price of 200-300).
The move was a big success and moviegoers queued up at as early as 6am to watch films back-toback. Several cinema and trade experts – who had initially predicted that it seemed unlikely that theatres would recover from the blow delivered by the pandemic – were proven wrong when houseful boards went back up at cinemas. Over 65 lakh viewers flocked to cinemas that day.
National Cinema Day also started a discussion around experimentation with an affordable price model. Several theatres offered movie tickets for a special festive price of 100 for consecutive weeks.
Eventually, stakeholders came to the conclusion that while there can’t be “uniform lower ticket price”, discounts and promotional prices on a per-movie basis can be the way ahead.

Advance bookings are back
Niharika Lal (BOMBAY TIMES; December 24, 2022)
The recently-released Avatar: The Way Of Water has recorded more advance ticket sales in India in its first week than any other Hollywood film this year, outpacing all other Hollywood record-holders of 2022. With the return in demand for advance bookings, cinemas have started selling tickets a week or 10 days in advance for select movies. Cine experts talk about what the comeback of this trend means.
Devang Sampat, CEO, Cinepolis, says, “It is the franchise films – like KGF and now Avatar – which see the most advance bookings, because the audience knows what to expect. In the case of RRR, fans of Baahubali flocked to theatres. When viewers know that they will get the value for money, they purchase tickets in advance.”
Karan Taurani, cinema analyst, adds, “The major factors that prompt a higher rate of advance bookings are positive word of mouth, large-scale content, festive releases or franchises for which there is anticipation.”
Sometimes, price can play a role too. For example, on National Cinema Day, cinemas across the country witnessed a huge spike in advance bookings because tickets were priced at 75.
Raj Bansal, exhibitor and industry expert, adds, “It indeed signals the recovery of the cinema business. I wouldn’t be surprised to see fans creating a new record as we clock the year. This trend is going to continue for the most-awaited releases of the coming year too.”
--------------------------------------------------------
Houseful boards – a relic of the past?
Niharika Lal (BOMBAY TIMES; December 24, 2022)
Queuing for cinema tickets and houseful shows seem like things from the past. Cinemas – used to 30-50% occupancy on normal pre-pandemic days – have discarded the houseful boards long back. Now, these boards can only be found lying in a forgotten corner of some single screen theatres, a reminder of a bygone era.
Yogesh Raizada, exhibitor, says, “Houseful shows are so rare now that when it happens it reminds us of the guzra zamana of moviegoing. Those days are long gone when you would see a houseful board outside cinema halls. Barring two or three films in a year, that too for a few specific shows, none of the shows are sold out now.”
Cinema experts say, “Ab na ticket ki maaraamaari hoti hai, na darwaaze tootte hain.”
Adds Girish Johar, cinema business analyst, “Houseful boards are not just boards, these are sentiments. And those emotions are now missing – a sign of relief for the cinema proprietor and disappointment for viewers who couldn’t get a ticket. Ab agar houseful board kahin dikh jaye toh photo click kar lena chahiye.”
Agrees Raj Bansal, cinema expert and exhibitor, “In the era of single-screen theatres, giant sold-out boards would be kept outside the screens to tell moviegoers that all tickets have been sold out. Ab shows kabhi sold out hi nahi hote. The audiences do not exactly come in droves anymore.”
(Crisp) Movie Review: AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER by FENIL SETA

Avatar: The Way Of Water, as expected, makes for a one-of-a-kind experience. The visuals this time are far more stunning than what it was in the first part. The climax is nearly 45-50 minutes long and has enough action and hence, will give you your money's worth. Also, the film works big time emotionally. What is also a plus is that it's easy to understand as James Cameron, in his trademark style, narrates the story in a neat and uncomplicated manner. On the flipside, the film is too lengthy. Nothing much happens after a point in the first half as Cameron uses the template of the first part of establishing the world before intermission and then going all out later on. Speaking of performances, Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana play the lead part with perfection. Stephen Lang, yet again, impresses as the antagonist. Sigourney Weaver (Grace/Kiri) and Jake Champion (Spider) leave a huge mark. Jamie Flatters (Neteyam) and Britain Dalton (Lo'ak) do well but it's difficult to distinguish between the two. Bailey Bass (Tsireya) is cute and does well. Kate Winslet (Ronal) essays a strong character but gets limited scope. All in all, Avatar: The Way Of Water justifiably takes the story forward and shouldn’t be missed. It’ll be criminal to wait for its pirated print or OTT release…this one is only and only meant for the BIG screen!
My rating - **** ½ out of 5!

WILL THE HIGH TICKET PRICES PROVE TO BE A BOON OR BANE FOR AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER?
The last three weeks weren’t up to the mark for the box office. Except for Drishyam 2, all the new releases underperformed or bombed. All eyes are now on Avatar: The Way Of Water, which is all set to release tomorrow, Friday, December 16. It is the sequel to the much-loved film, Avatar, which continues to be the biggest grosser ever. Even in India, it worked big time. Hence, the expectations are tremendous from the sequel.
Avatar: The Way Of Water, just like the first part, promises to be a visual spectacle and an emotional drama. The teaser was out way back in July 2022 and ever since, the hype for the film increased manifold. It is directed by James Cameron, who became a reputed name after the blockbuster success of Titanic. His films work even among the masses in India as they know that his films are easy to understand and relate to and at the same time, it provides a wholesome cinematic experience. The 20th Century Fox team has also gone all out to ensure that the film makes enough noise.
The reviews of the film have been largely positive in Overseas and India and this has also made people confident that it’ll be worth a watch. However, the ticket rates are sky high. Such prices have never been seen for any film in India. Yet, a section of the audience has booked tickets. At the same time, several moviegoers have decided to adopt a wait-and-watch policy. While some would prefer the audience word of mouth to come in before deciding to book, several have made it clear that they’d like to watch the film only when the prices come down.
Avatar: The Way Of Water has got a wide release and in Mumbai, shows commence at 12:00 am. This usually happens in select theatres or in IMAX and 4DX screens. But in the case of this film, midnight screenings will be held in several theatres. Sadly, many non-IMAX and non-4DX shows at midnight or early morning at 5:00 and 6:00 am are empty and in some shows, not a single ticket has been booked. Even films like Drishyam 2 and Brahmastra had shows at these odd times but these were added from day 2 after it became clear that the films have tremendous demand. But with Avatar: The Way Of Water, the studio is so confident that it held midnight and post-midnight shows from the day of release. Hopefully, these shows will get satisfactory footfalls from Saturday onwards.
Due to the excitement and insane ticket prices, Avatar: The Way Of Water will take a huge opening. At present, it looks like it’ll open in the range of Rs. 35-40 crores, which will make it the second biggest Hollywood opener of all time after Avengers: Endgame. It’ll have competition from Cirkus next week after which it has a clean four week run. As a result, if public reports are strong, Avatar: The Way Of Water can go anywhere and even cross the Rs. 250 and Rs. 300 crore marks!
The other release of the week is Govinda Naam Mera, starring Vicky Kaushal, Kiara Advani and Bhumi Pednekar. Directed by Shashank Khaitan and produced by Karan Johar, it releases directly on Disney+ Hotstar. It looks like a fun film and the song ‘Bijli’ has got registered among movie buffs. Hence, it can get a decent viewership, especially if the word of mouth is encouraging.

Indian audiences respond to emotion of a movie. And that's what we have put into Avatar: The Way Of Water-Jon Landau

Avatar: The Way Of Water has Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana reprise their roles as Jake Sully and Ney’tiri, and Kate Winslet as the matriarch of the water tribe
Kritika Kapoor (BOMBAY TIMES; December 12, 2022)
It’s taken Avatar’s makers 13 years to return with its sequel, Avatar: The Way Of Water. That’s partly because director James Cameron was waiting for the right underwater tech and also because they had to create the setting – a part of Pandora inhabited by the ocean-dwelling Na’avi clan, the Metkayina – from scratch. In the sequel, Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana reprise their roles as Jake Sully and Ney’tiri, now parents to five children, who have to learn to survive in the water world. Like the protagonists, the cast was put through the ringer during filming. Kate Winslet, who plays the matriarch of the water tribe, even ended up breaking Tom Cruise’s record by holding her breath underwater for a whopping 7. 12 minutes!
Ultimately, for the film’s producer Jon Landau it all boiled down to “getting it right”. And though there’s no denying that the world’s changed dramatically since the original Avatar came out, he tells us why he feels the timing of its sequel couldn’t be more perfect. Excerpts:
‘CINEMA HAS TO GIVE PEOPLE CONTENT WORTH GETTING OUT OF THE HOUSE FOR’
It’s not that people don’t want to go to the cinemas. I, in fact, think they want to go more than ever. But we as an industry have to give them content that is worth getting out of the house for. We can’t give them the same thing they can get on their phone or their TV at home. We have to give them something new and different. And that was our goal from Day 1 – to create “a must-see on the big screen” experience. Not just in the visual, but also an emotional sense. And I think that when movies work, they work emotionally. And I think one of the things that the Indian audiences respond to is the emotion of a movie – whether it’s the laughter, whether it’s the heart. And that’s what we have tried to put into the film – heart.
‘IT TOOK OVER A DECADE TO DO IT RIGHT’
We took our time because we wanted to do it right. And this is the amount of time it took. If you look back, it took us the same amount of time between Titanic (1997) and Avatar (2009). Am I happy with how it turned out? 100%! We make the movie for audiences, and that’s one of the reasons why in India we’re going to be in so many different languages. We know the diversity of the country, and Avatar – at its root – is about celebrating diversity.
‘NOT MAKING SEQUEL FOR THE SAKE OF IT’
I think we are making a lot of sequels (Avatar 3, 4 and 5 are already in the pipeline), but not for the sake of making a sequel. We are making a continuation of a saga. I look at each one of our movies as standalone movies. Each movie is going to come to its own story conclusion, its own emotional resolution and we always go, ‘is that a movie worth making?’ ‘Does this movie warrant a cinema experience?’
Strong movie runs, non-Hindi genre to boost multiplexes

Top lines of PVR, Inox Leisure projected to grow 18-20% in FY24; restoration of 8-week exhibition timeline bodes well
Rajesh Naidu (THE ECONOMIC TIMES; July 19, 2022)
ET Intelligence Group: Multiplexes are likely to record higher growth in revenue than broadcast (channels) companies following a strong line-up of movies and rising popularity of non-Hindi releases. In contrast, channel broadcasters are expected to face headwinds of dwindling advertising revenue amid high production costs. Analysts expect multiplex companies including PVR and Inox Leisure to record 18-20% top-line growth for FY24 compared with the FY23 estimated numbers.
The top-line growth is expected to pick up for multiplexes in the second half of FY23 given a large number of big-budget, star-studded, and spectacle films in Hindi, regional languages and English. Films such as Laal Singh Chaddha, Shamshera, Brahmastra (Part I), Liger, Adipurush, Avatar: The Way Of Water and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever are expected to generate high footfalls in theatres.
Besides, multiplexes are expected to benefit from a longer run of movies at theatres before debuting on over-the-top (OTT) streaming services. Before the Coronavirus pandemic, movies were released on OTT after completing eight weeks of theatrical exhibition. During the pandemic, the time frame was shortened to four weeks amid falling footfalls at the movie halls and improving reach of streaming services.
Now that the ticket sales at theatres are improving as demonstrated by some of the recent hit movies, filmmakers, distributors and exhibitors have decided to restore the eight-week time frame starting August 1. This augurs well for multiplexes given a strong line-up of movies and the ensuing festive season. The move will provide more weeks of collections for multiplexes boosting their revenues in the coming quarters.
The rising popularity of regional content is another positive factor. According to a distributor who requested anonymity, audiences are more open to films in regional and English languages as they are available with subtitles or dubbed. “Multiplexes no longer have a very high dependence on Hindi films for collections. Most blockbusters in recent months have been either in regional or English language,” he added.
On the other hand, the revenue of broadcast companies may fall or show lower growth because of the slowdown in advertising from FMCG, auto and new-age technology sectors, and high production and marketing expenses arising from inflation.
