BOMBAY TIMES (June 18, 2015)
Amitabh Bachchan will turn
superhero in Graphic India and Disney Channel India's 52episode
animated series Astra Force. A funny and fast-paced, action-adventure
series filled with laughs and thrills, it tells the story of a mythical
hero from a distant world, who was stranded on Earth millions of
years ago after an epic space battle.
Said Siddharth Roy Kapur, Managing Director, Disney India, “We believe in showcasing great stories with compelling characters that are loved by our audiences. It is imperative to get the local texture right for any story to resonate and emotionally connect with the viewers.“
Sharad Devarajan Co-Founder and CEO, Graphic India, added, “Creating this new animated superhero with Mr Amitabh Bachchan is a perfect tribute to a person who is a real-life hero to all of us. In the same way Spider-Man, Superman and Pokémon have become household names, Astra will inspire the imaginations of children all across the world for generations to come.“
About his new role, Big B and superheroes in general, Big B said, “Animated superheroes have not been seen to any large extent in India, primarily because we have an abundance of them in all our mythological tales; tales we have all grown up with. The idea behind Astra is to construct a fresh superhero and see where it goes. With so many stories to narrate, India has a hidden wealth waiting to be conceptualised. The idea is novel and pioneering in a sense, and we hope to put it across for viewers by 2017 early months. The world has been witnessing many in the shape of a Superman, Batman, Spiderman and on. It would be wonderful if we could create one of our own Indian brands. My growing up years were devoid of TV and so, of course, Superman comics were a rage, as were the stories through comics of Roy Rogers, Lone Ranger and Peter Pan.“

Sharad Devarajan, CEO and co-founder of Graphic India has been closely working with the actor on his character whose name, Astra, is derived from the mythical weapons of yore. He recalls approaching Bachchan with five completely different visions and characters. "He picked this one of the wise mentor and protector as it is most identifiable with his paternal brand and majestic persona. Over the last six months, he has offered his creative inputs to developing the character, the art work and the story as a whole," says Sharad.
For him and Jeevan J Kang, the head visual artist and producer, Bachchan was the obvious choice not just for his connect with kids but also because of the cinematic history he shares with their parents. The idea is to unify families. "Presenting Indian families with interesting stories and engaging concepts is at the heart of what we do on the Disney network. And this action-adventure comedy series with its unique storyline, is another exciting step in that direction. Mr. Bachchan stepping out in an animated avatar for the first time on TV just makes it that much more special," says Siddharth Roy Kapur, MD, Disney India.
Point out that Indian animation doesn't have a big audience with only The Jungle Book and Chota Bheem finding favour with the kiddy crowd, and Sharad retorts, "Just because we haven't been as successful as the West doesn't mean we can't. Yes, even Mr Bachchan admitted that his grandchildren mostly watch Doremon. If Japan as a country can entertain our kids, why not India which has always been a nation of great storytellers? Astra Force is uniquely Indian which will reach out to a worldwide audience."
Two years ago, Amitabh was seen as animated Bheeshma in the film Mahabharat.
