Nature conservation is a cause that many Bollywood stars champion. With World Environment Day around the corner, many actors have joined forces to spread the good word. This year, Abhishek Bachchan will lead the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Bhamla Foundation’s World Environment Day campaign, the theme of which is Bhumi Namaskar. Bachchan will front the music video that also stars Varun Dhawan, Jackie Shroff, Sobhita Dhulipala, Malaika Arora and has been helmed by R Balki.
Asif Bhamla, the mind behind the initiative, says Gulzar and Javed Akhtar were among the first to hear the song and praise it. “Bhumi namaskar is about expressing gratitude to Mother Earth that keeps giving us so much, and we selfishly keep destroying it,” he shares.
The song is written by Prasoon Joshi, composed by Aman Pant and sung by Shreya Ghoshal, Sheykhar Ravjiani, and others.
While a cyclathon will be held on June 5 at Carter Road in Bandra to mark World Environment Day, an event has been lined up at the Carter Road amphitheatre for June 8. Bhamla is pleased that Bachchan agreed to be part of the venture.
“Mr Balki told me that bringing Abhishek on board wouldn’t be easy as he is shy. He is known to refuse ads worth crores. When we explained to him that he’d be giving back to Mother Earth through this, Abhishek agreed.”
Bachchan says he wants to do his bit for a greener planet. “I’m happy to be a part of this global campaign. Plus, Balki has curated this, whom I have immense respect for,” he says.
While Shroff is proud that the next generation is environmentally conscious, Arora says, “Healthy soil is essential for life on earth. Plants can survive without humans, but humans cannot without plants. This is a reminder [that we can] make a difference together.”

Alia leads World Environment Day campaign against plastic pollution; to be joined by Vidya, Ayushmann, Guneet in a special music video
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; May 12, 2023)
Every year, Bollywood comes out in full force to fight the good fight for environmental conservation. Last year, Shilpa Shetty, Kapil Sharma and Tara Sutaria had teamed up with Bhamla Foundation for the cause. This year, Alia Bhatt will spearhead the World Environment Day campaign that aims to take a stand against plastic pollution. The actor will feature in the music video, Tik tik plastic that will also include Vidya Balan, Rajkummar Rao, Ayushmann Khurrana, Guneet Monga, and Ricky Kej. While the video will be unveiled at a grand event held at Bandra Fort on June 5, it will be aired at the G20 summit in September.
Environmentalist Asif Bhamla reveals that the theme song has been rendered by Shaan and Shankar Mahadevan, with lyrics by Swanand Kirkire. This year, the idea is to encourage citizens to get rid of single-use plastic. Bhatt, he says, is the perfect face to lead the cause as she resonates with the youth.
“The music video will open with Alia Bhatt’s sound bytes. She represents the youth and has always been vocal about environmental issues. We are grateful that [Bollywood stars] have supported the fight against single-use plastic. Some of them set aside their shooting schedule to film the video,” he says.
He adds that Kej, to show his support for the cause, will perform at the World Environment Day event. Bhatt asserts that doing away with plastic is a crucial step to protect the planet. “I’m glad to support this global campaign. We need to join this effort to beat plastic pollution and find eco-friendly solutions.”
For Oscar winner Guneet Monga, it is a cause close to her heart. The producer says, “Climate change is affecting us on an everyday basis, because of our habits. I am here today because I am terrified of what our future will be.”
Balan echoes her sentiments, stating, “Shockingly, estimates show that each person consumes more than 50,000 plastic particles per year. That poses a risk to people and the planet. It’s high time we started taking responsibility for our actions.”

Bollywood actors have often used their star power to raise awareness about environmental conservation. While World Environment Day (June 5) was marked by virtual campaigns over the past two years due to the pandemic, many stars are coming together to celebrate the day with three live events in Mumbai this year.
What’s more, environmentalist Asif Bhamla has put together a music video — featuring Shilpa Shetty, Tara Sutaria, and Kapil Sharma, among others — to promote the United Nations’ global campaign, Only One Earth.
The score has been composed by Shaan and Shankar Mahadevan, while the video has been choreographed by Ahmed Khan. “It has been sung by Kapil, B Praak, Adnan Sami, and others. We will release the music video in the first week of June. Only One Earth was a theme started, 50 years ago, by the United Nations,” says Bhamla.
He is excited about the events that his foundation has lined up for June 5. “We will host two events in the evening — one for the public at Carter Road and a select do with live performances at a five-star Bandra hotel. There will be a cyclothon in the morning from Carter Road to Bandstand.”
Sutaria, who along with Sachin Tendulkar, is the face of the campaign, says it is time to take steps against climate change. “For the past 50 years, we have been talking about [conservation], and yet little has been done. Our time is running out. We have to save our planet’s resources by using them responsibly. We have to live in harmony with nature.”

Tiger Shroff has joined the league of actors who have been putting their might behind environmental causes by becoming the face of the global campaign for urban forests across India, along with the Bhamla Foundation. Asif Bhamla of the foundation tells mid-day that the actor has agreed to lend his voice to a music video aimed at furthering the cause.
“We plan to shoot a music video with Tiger for the campaign. The song will be sung by him, and he will also dance to it. Apart from being a role model for the youth, Tiger is a passionate environmentalist. He will attend our major forest plantation campaigns and also participate in our digital campaign, where he will interact with fans. He is participating pro bono, and has offered to work as an environmental activist from the grass root level. But, we wanted him as the face of the movement.”
Launched by Shroff and global environmentalist Erik Solheim, the campaign will aim to promote the need to control rising temperatures and prevent global warming. The actor tells mid-day, “I am glad to be part of such an important cause. Conserving urban forests and slowing down climate change is the need of the hour, if we want to build a sustainable future. Small changes can go a long way in protecting the environment. I hope to find as much support as I can, especially from the youth.”

Asserting that only vaccination can ensure everyone’s safety, Bhumi Pednekar throws her weight behind campaign designed to encourage youngsters to get jabbed
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; August 3, 2021)
Bhumi Pednekar is the perfect example of how a celebrity can use his/her soft power to bring about change. Only months after she launched her online community of COVID Warrior, the actor has now thrown her weight behind another urgent cause — vaccination. She is part of the Sleeves Up campaign that is targeted at youngsters.
Proud to collaborate with the Bhamla Foundation that started the campaign in Bandra and Khar last month, Pednekar says, “Mr [Asif] Bhamla is concentrating on vaccinating the country’s youth. They are at great risk because of their lifestyle and jobs; they are also the wealth creators of the country. Vaccination is the only solution to the problem that the world is facing.”
She is glad to join Sachin Tendulkar, Arjun Kapoor and Disha Patani in spreading the good word. “Using our soft power rightly for the betterment of society is our responsibility.”
This week, Pednekar will launch the immunisation drive in Dharavi where those belonging to the age group of 18 to 44 years will be vaccinated, free of cost, with an added emphasis on those below 22 years.
According to Bhamla, the campaign has caught the attention of its target audience because of the star power. “A section of the 18+ youngsters were initially skeptical about getting jabbed. [To change the mindset], Arjun and Aditya Roy Kapur kicked off the campaign, initiated by my daughter Saher, on July 13. We intend to vaccinate at least 10,000 people in the 18+ age group.”

Ahead of World Environment Day, Akshay, Taapsee, Raj and others join forces for UN’s special music video about nature conservation
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; May 27, 2021)
Overdue as it may be, there has been an increased dialogue about environmental conservation over the past few years. mid-day has learnt that Bollywood stars have joined forces to drive the message home on World Environment Day that will be celebrated on June 5. Akshay Kumar, Taapsee Pannu, Rajkummar Rao, Bhumi Pednekar, Shilpa Shetty Kundra and Arjun Kapoor have come together for a musical campaign, titled Dharti Ka Dil, which is supported by the United Nations and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
Environmentalist and green crusader Asif Bhamla, who has coordinated the initiative through Bhamla Foundation, reveals that the campaign is two-fold, consisting of a music video, and sound and song bytes of celebrities. “We have previously been felicitated by the UN for our Tik Tik Plastic campaign. Since their theme is ecosystem restoration this year, the music video focuses on how we need to rejuvenate the planet, the way our forefathers did for us,” he says of the video that is expected to release before June 5.
While Kumar leads the single from the front, it has been composed by Shaan, with Swanand Kirkire taking over the song-writing duties. Singers B Praak, Adnan Sami, Shankar Mahadevan, Palak Muchhal and others have lent their voice as well as featured in the track.
Explaining the decision to rope in film personalities, Bhamla reasons, “Bollywood celebrities are role models. Arjun, Taapsee, Bhumi, Rajkummar, Shilpa and Sonu Sood are part of the song bytes. We also have leaders from other walks of life, including Sachin Tendulkar, Manish Malhotra, and Faye D’Souza, as well as senior heads of the United Nation Environment Programme [UNEP].”
The environmentalist is grateful that the stars have thrown their weight behind the idea, despite their busy schedules. “It was a challenge to create the song and organise sound bytes during the lockdown.” He adds that of all the entries that have come from other countries, the UNEP has chosen to unveil the India teaser on social media by May 31.
Sanjay Dutt to show paper bag making skills, which he learnt in jail, at World Environment Day event

It's World Environment Day tomorrow and a clutch of Bollywood celebrities is gearing up to spread the go-green message at an event in Bandra.
Apart from the usual suspects — marathons, cyclothons, musical performances — the organisers have planned a special eco-friendly activity for Mumbaikars. Sanjay Dutt would hold a masterclass where he will demonstrate the process of making paper bags — a craft that he learnt during his jail term.
Asif Bhamla, chairperson of the Bhamla Foundation which co- organises the annual event, says, “Sanjay will show how to make paper bags in front of thousands of participants. Our motto behind this activity is to ask people to stop using plastic bags and protect and preserve the environment.”
The 56-year-old actor had earned Rs 440 for making paper bags and khaki envelopes in prison when he served the remainder of his five-year term in Pune’s Yerawada jail following his conviction in a case related to the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts. Dutt was initially given the job of making paper bags from newspapers. He was trained by a team of experts, and was tagged as an unskilled labour. The actor was paid Rs 45 for every 100 paper bags that he prepared perfectly.
This will be the eighth year that the foundation is organising this event to raise environmental awareness with the support of activists and celebs from various walks of wife. Last year, cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar had been named the event ambassador. This year, the focus will be on garbage compost. Around 1000 saplings will be distributed and many more events will be held for days post the big event on Sunday.
Jackie and Tiger Shroff, Raveena Tandon, Farhan Akhtar and a few other B’wood faces, political personalities and Tendulkar are expected to take part in the initiative. Salim-Suleiman, Honey Singh, Sona Mohapatra and Armaan Malik will perform at the cultural do which includes a dance show by Shiamak Davar’s troupe.
