Now CBFC refuses to certify promo of Mohalla Assi one month ahead of its theatrical release

Natasha Coutinho (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 18, 2018)

Mirror had earlier reported (January 11) that after 13 months of court appearances and 11 hearings, Chandraprakash Dwivedi’s film Mohalla Assi was passed with an ‘A’ certificate. Now, the film is stuck again after the Central Board of Film Certification’s examining committee refused to certify a promo without cuts for the film that was submitted last week.

“A part of our promo had gone viral a few years ago, based on which many PILs were filed against the makers, after which the censor board said that parts of the film were hurting religious sentiments. We approached High Court and got our film cleared with an ‘A’ certificate and instructions to edit out one scene,” co-producer Ashok Ahuja told Mirror, adding that they are racing against time to have the promotional material cleared ahead of the film’s November 16 release.

“Promos and trailers have to be cleared by the board before being released in the public domain. While our promo for a ‘U’ certificate has been cleared, the ‘A’ promo, has been denied. We have been told to remove two more scenes (with bad language) from the promo, but they are vital to our promotion,” Ahuja added.

He further contends that the High Court cleared the film, so it shouldn’t be a ground for the CBFC to deny certification for promos. “They have now told us to approach the revising committee. We can still showcase our promo digitally or at a private theatre, but it won’t have the same impact, which is what we are fighting for,” he says.

Distributors from Pakistan reportedly refuse to pick up Calendar Girls

BOMBAY TIMES (September 21, 2015)

Calendar Girls, directed by Madhur Bhandarkar, is the latest to face the heat in Pakistan. The local distributors have reportedly refused the movie stating the Pakistan Censor Board doesn't want to see it because of a particular line in the trailer.

The dialogue in question is -“Paksitani ladkiyaan bhi utne hi bold kaam karti hain jitni baaki ladkiyaan karti hain, balki kabhi kabhi uss se zyada bhi“ - spoken by Avani Modi who plays Nazneen Mallik, a Pakistani girl aspiring to become a supermodel.

The Pakistan Censor Board has apparently deemed this dialogue as demeaning to their women and they do not want to even view it for certification, says a source. Therefore, the film may not release in the neighbouring country.

Producer Sangeeta Ahir of Mangl Murti Films, says, “It is unfortunate that such a decision has been taken without even viewing the film. One should not make a judgement on the basis of just one dialogue. Instead, they should see the film in totality. I'm hoping the Pakistan Censor Board change their mind as there is nothing derogatory about anyone in the film.“

Ashok Ahuja, Head of Distribution for the production house, says, “The distributors from Pakistan are wary that their Censor Board could reprimand them severely for the objectionable dialogue, and have hence taken the self-censorship route and declined our film. They probably fear that the board's negative reaction could jeopardise their license to distribute other Bollywood films as well. On our part, we've told them to view Calendar Girls, that is scheduled for release on September 25, before making any decision and we are sincerely hoping that they consider our request. Incidentally, the Dubai authorities have cleared it and we're releasing it in 40 screens there.“
