I don’t watch the match with certain friends. I feel we always lose if they are around-Saiyami Kher

Renuka Vyavahare (BOMBAY TIMES; November 19, 2023)
Saiyami Kher is not just a cricket enthusiast, but also a cricketer who recently played the role of a bowler in Ghoomer. On the eve of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, the actress did a special shoot for us in Mumbai, where she did what she loves the most – played cricket and talked about India’s historic run in the tournament.
She shared, “Before the 2011 final, I was nervous but this time I am not. I am excited. We have been the most dominant side. Every time we were challenged, we came out stronger. 10 games on the trot! This almost feels like the 2003 Australian side. Yes, we know what Australia can do in the finals but given the kind of cricket we have played in this entire tournament, we are a much more dominant side so let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope all goes well for one last time.”
While all of us have our plans in place for today, Saiyami's are star-studded. “I am going to watch the game with Ashish Nehra, Zaheer Khan, Parthiv Patel, Virender Sehwag. I couldn’t have asked for a better company. I have been starstruck by cricket and sportsmen since childhood. I can’t explain how special it feels to watch the game with them and talk about the games for a show with them. This is me living my childhood dream”, she chuckles.
Which Indian fan is not superstitious, right? Saiyami adds, “We feel our superstitions make India win or lose (laughs). My superstition is wearing the 2011 India WC winning jersey, which I wore at the Wankhede when India won the WC. I felt like Dhoni hit that six to me. I feel that jersey is the lucky charm for Team India. As far as don’ts are concerned, I don’t watch the match with certain friends. I feel we always lose if they are around. Or don’t sit on a particular chair or don’t let someone else hold the remote. The list is endless.”
While there have been so many iconic moments in this WC, Saiyani picks one too. She says, “Virat’s 50 in front of the master blaster (Sachin Tendulkar) was a very special moment, one for the decades. There couldn’t have been a better written script. Glenn Maxwell’s double century was one of the finest ODI innings, K L Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Shami have been so good, but I feel the highlight has been Rohit Sharma and the way he has played. He is destructive and derails the opposition. The intent and aggression he has shown, this brand of cricket, we haven’t seen before. His attitude as a batsman and the way he has captained the team has been commendable. Monday should be a national holiday once we win, and the boys deserve a break too. To get into a bilateral series immediately after the WC can be gruelling.”
The WC has had its share of controversies too but Saiyami concludes, “Controversies, conspiracy theories will always happen. Social media adds to it. Home advantage is bound to be there but using a different coin, manipulating the pitch etc, these things are absolute rubbish.”
Neha Dhupia, Angad Bedi to throw a lavish wedding reception in Mumbai in July

Post a hush-hush wedding in May, Angad Bedi confirms after-party next month as Neha Dhupia and he await availability of friends and colleagues
Mohar Basu (MUMBAI MIRROR; June 8, 2018)
Delighted though they all were, friends of Angad Bedi and Neha Dhupia had playfully lamented about the lack of celebration to mid-day a day after the duo tied the knot in a hush-hush wedding in May. It appears, the couple is finally ready to include their close pals in their revelry by throwing a party in the first week of July.
"We are hoping to host a reception in the first week of July. Shaadi toh kar li, but we have to go reverse now," laughs Angad Bedi, admitting he's having a hard time getting his wife to "sit down and plan this" with him. "She needs to give me five days to figure this out. We have seen a few venues and are yet to zero in on one." Given his stint in cricket and cinema, the actor reveals his guest list is fittingly long. And while it's hard to get everyone under one roof, he knows he can't host the reception in the absence of a few special ones.
"I want my close friends to be there. Right now, all of them are busy. [Ashish] Nehra is not in town. From the film industry, I want Mr [Amitabh] Bachchan and Salman [Khan] bhai to be there, and they are both caught up right now," says the actor, adding that wife Neha Dhupia too has a sizeable list of friends she hopes to invite given her long stint in the industry. The celebrations, he says, will follow after they lock in on a house they wish to purchase. Reflecting on his nuptials, that took the country off-guard, Bedi admits "it was sudden". A casual conversation with Dhupia about life kicked things into gear.
"One day, Neha and I were talking about life, and I told her I want to settle down with her. We've known each other for a while. I have been interested in her for a long time. I spoke to her parents. They loved me, especially her mother. We had the idea of having a winter wedding, but my dad [Bishan Singh Bedi] said we should keep it small. Between the cricket and Bollywood industries, we should have a guest list of 2,000 people." Had the ceremony not taken place last month, the couple's commitments would have kept them busy for a year. "Neha is leaving for the US soon, and I am in between three projects. So, it was now or never for us."

Invitees spill the beans on Angad Bedi and Neha Dhupia's nuptials on Thursday
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; May 11, 2018)
Still feasting on the heart-warming images spilling out from Sonam Kapoor and Anand Ahuja's recently concluded wedding, netizens did not expect to find themselves waking up to news of Angad Bedi and Neha Dhupia's nuptials yesterday. The lovebirds took everyone by surprise by announcing their marriage by sharing pictures from their Anand Karaj ceremony held at a Vasant Vihar Gurudwara.
A source, who attended the wedding told mid-day, "It was a quiet ceremony because that's how they wanted it to be. It was an intimate affair, with only friends and family in attendance. They wanted to break the news to the world, so even we refrained from posting photos online."
The former cricketer's friends from the field, Ajay Jadeja and Ashish Nehra, apart from actor Gaurav Kapur and photographer Prasad Naik showed up for the ceremonies - starting with the mehendi rituals on Wednesday evening - at a half-day notice. Neha Dhupia wore a blush chanderi embroidered lehenga designed by Anita Dongre. Apt for a daytime ceremony, the lehenga had exquisite zardosi and resham work. Dhupia teamed it with a kundan choker and matching earrings from Dongre's jewellery collection.
Another friend of the couple adds, "They are planning a Mumbai reception. They will host a party to make up for not having invited us to the wedding. But, they are in most likelihood, leaving for the US tonight for a charity event, and will be back next week."
In a joint statement, the couple announced, "Marrying your best friend is one of the greatest feelings in the world, and we are extremely fortunate to have found love in each other."

Couple
got hitched in a quiet Sikh ceremony on Thursday in Delhi; will host a
reception for Bollywood friends in the coming weeks
Natasha Coutinho (MUMBAI MIRROR; May 11, 2018)
Two days after Sonam Kapoor and Anand Ahuja’s star-studded wedding in Mumbai, actress Neha Dhupia quietly tied the knot with actor Angad Bedi in the capital. The couple who has been friends for a while now and call themselves each other’s best friends, had managed to keep their relationship under wraps and as news of the shaadi leaked out, even family and close friends were taken by surprise. Angad’s father, legendary spinner Bishan Singh Bedi, described it as “a bombshell of sorts, albeit a pleasant one”.
A source reveals that the newly-weds who are both part of the entertainment industry have known each other since the last 15 years but started dating only last year. “It was at designer Sandeep Khosla’s Diwali party that Karan (Johar) pointed out that Angad and Neha looked great together and should start dating. Following his cue, they decided to give it a shot. Karan played match-maker,” informs the source.
Angad had posted a picture of the two with KJo from his Christmas party last December which Neha had ‘liked’. In fact, since early last year, every other post of his has got a ‘like’ from her. But neither this nor the fact that they arrived together for Sagarika Ghatge and Zaheer Khan’s wedding reception last November had sparked off any rumours.
Present by their side at the gurdwara, as they were pronounced man and wife, were close friends, cricketers Ajay Jadeja and Ashish Nehra and VJ-host Gaurav Kapur. The Anand Karaj ceremony was followed by lunch. Delighted by the happy ending, Karan celebrated the “marriage of eternal happiness”. He went on to wish his “darling and most special friend” Neha Dhupia and “gentleman” Angad Bedi “decades of unconditional love”.
On Wednesday, during the chooda ceremony an emotional Neha had broken down. The mehendi was the same night. For her big day, the bride opted for a baby pink lehenga with Rajasthani embroidery by Anita Dongre. It had gota, patti, zari, pearls, dori, zardozi and sequin work. She teamed this with a choker of gold and uncut diamonds, with Colombian emeralds and small pearls. The jhumkas also had a touch of enamel. The mangtikka was gold with an emerald and iolite. Later in the day, Angad and Neha issued a joint statement, saying, “Marrying your best friend is one of the greatest feelings in the world, and we are extremely fortunate to have found love in each other. It has been a beautiful journey knowing each other and after formalizing the wedding earlier this year, today, we exchanged our vows in a beautifully simple, private and intimate Anand Karaj ceremony in Delhi.”
Gaurav admitted to Mirror that he had got to know about the wedding on Wednesday like everyone else and promised to be there. “Our friends are in shock, they’ve been calling and asking me if it’s true, and I have been assuring them it is not a prank, they actually got married,” laughs the TV host, recalling that he used to tease the couple saying that if they did decide to get hitched, he wouldn’t know whether to dance in the baarat or be on the girl’s side. “Since it was a surprise wedding, I didn’t have to grapple with the dilemma for long and both mothers assured me that I was on their side.”
He went on to add that since the wedding was planned so quickly, only family and a few friends were present. “Many couldn’t make it because of the short notice. We were just 30-40 people. Bish uncle’s (Bishan Singh Bedi) speech was one of the high points, he’s a fantastic orator,” Gaurav said.
Bedi spoke about the virtues of marriage and the importance of finding the right partner with a few cricket references. “He also explained the significance of the laavan pheras (the four pheras in the Sikh wedding ceremony) and teased the groom and bride who speak broken Punjabi, telling them they can now help each other speak their mother tongue better. I guess sportsmen like indulging in gentle leg pulling,” Gaurav smiled.
On Thursday, the couple jetted off to the US where the new bride will attend a charity event which will double up as an impromptu honeymoon. Once back, they will host a reception in Mumbai for their Bollywood friends and colleagues.

Shoaib Akhtar to debut as a judge on Indian Mazak League

Natasha Coutinho (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 5, 2016)
Former Pakistani fast bowler
Shoaib Akhtar and India's spin wizard Harbhajan Singh are gearing up to
debut as judges on the upcoming comedy show, Indian Mazak League, on
Life
OK. Insisting that if you're a Punjabi, irrespective of the side of the
border you're settled on, you have a funny bone, the speedster admits
that he always had the gift of the gab.
“I've had my share of fun in
the dressing room with a-joke-a-minute contemporaries like Mohammad
Yousuf and Shoaib Malik and seniors like Wasim Akram and Inzamam-ul-Haq.
My namesake takes mimicry to another level. There was so much of banter
and harmless leg-pulling that my jaws would ache. Among the Indian
cricketers Ashish Nehra and Yuvraj Singh are a riot, as also Virender
Sehwag,“ he informs, adding that even his family enjoys a laugh but
being the younger sibling he's more inhibited.
He believes cricket and humour go hand in hand because the sport is an assimilation of different characters which makes the ride fun. “I have my take on a particular situation while Inzamam bhai or Afridi (Shahid) would look at it differently. Professional sport can be stressful so it's important to keep the atmosphere in the dressing room light,“ he says.
When quizzed on the show he insists that more than being a judge he is happy to be a part of a fun show. “Now I will be paid to enjoy the jokes, I don't think there can be a better job,“ twinkles the cricketer who will be sticking to his own sartorial style which means suits with slightly flared trousers and waistcoats, jeans and tees, playing around with bright colours.
He points out that Bhajji has been a good competitor and they have had some interesting battles on the cricket field. “Now we will be on the same team and I'm looking forward to that. I hope we can do justice to the job,“ he says fervently.
Speaking about the kind of humour he enjoys Shoaib says he loves spontaneous fun, stuff you can watch with the family without squirming. “For me humour is something you can take home and laugh out loud reminiscing about a joke or a funny incident when recalling it alone,“ he points out, saying he doesn't like comedians crossing the line of decency. "I like Akshay Kumar, Jaaved Jaaferi and our own Omar Sharif who are extremely talented. And I've really enjoyed Andaz Apna Apna, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron and all Amitabh Bachchan comedies.“
Pakistani artistes like Fawad Khan, Ali Zafar and Atif Aslam have been doing good work in Bollywood. Will we see Shoaib on screen some day? “It is good to see my fellow countrymen doing Pakistan proud in the Indian film industry. They help spread the message of peace and harmony. As far as I am concerned my priority is my family and my work at the moment. Besides, I don't plan for the future, I take things as they come,“ he shrugs.
