Kangana Ranaut flight chaos: IndiGo bars nine media personnel

Saurabh Sinha (THE TIMES OF INDIA; October 26, 2020)

New Delhi: IndiGo has barred nine electronic media personnel from flying for a fortnight after its internal probe panel found they had behaved in an unruly manner on a Chandigarh-Mumbai flight (6E-264) of September 9 that had, among others, actress Kangana Ranaut on board.

An IndiGo official said the ban period for the journalists was from October 15 to 30.

Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had directed IndiGo on September 11 to “initiate suitable action against those responsible for violation of regulatory provisions and guidelines and submit an action-taken-report, failing which suitable action will be initiated against the airline”. Following the regulatory directive, the airline set up a probe panel as per nofly list rules.

“Earlier this week, IndiGo informed us that its probe panel found media personnel on the flight behaved in an unruly manner that violated flight safety and Covid protocol. The airline grounded these media personnel for two weeks. It sent its probe panel findings and action-taken-report to DGCA and other airlines,” sources said.

Sources said it was up to other airlines to follow action taken by IndiGo against those found guilty of unruly behaviour. Till now Indian carriers have collectively barred passengers, like in cases of MPs barred from flying after misbehaving with airline personnel.

On January 28, IndiGo decided to ground standup comedian Kunal Kamra for six months (later halved) after he confronted TV anchor Arnab Goswami on a flight. Other airlines had also barred Kamra, with AirAsia India and Vistara doing so for one-and-a-half-months.

The suspension was the lowest no-fly period handed out by an airline in India.

On September 9, Ranaut was making a pre-announced return to Mumbai. Inflight videos of 6E-264 showed that soon after the aircraft touched down in Mumbai, electronic media personnel left their seats and rushed to the front row where Ranaut was seated to try to record visuals. Crew repeatedly made announcements for passengers to observe norms.

One of the announcements said: “Please understand, we all are equal. Please do not harass any passenger. Kindly follow all safety rules and remain seated till seatbelt is on.”

DGCA sought a report from the airline and, after receiving it, the regulator had observed that “a number of violations have happened on the day...”

The violations listed in the letter included “not stopping the large number media personnel boarding the flight with cameras in Chandigarh by taking help of security personnel; these passengers not following crew instructions during flight and even after landing; not following Covid-19 protocol”.

DGCA has warned all airlines that allowing a repeat of such behaviour will lead to the airline being suspended for two weeks from operating on the route on which the incident takes place.

Sushant Singh Rajput case: Sandip Ssingh sues Republic TV for maligning image

PM Biopic Maker Facing Drug Allegations Made 53 Calls To BJP: Congress
Mohua Das (THE TIMES OF INDIA; October 16, 2020)

Film producer and friend of actor Sushant Singh Rajput — Sandip Ssingh, who was under the scanner after he was seen taking an active lead in events following the actor's death — slapped a legal notice on Republic TV and its editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami claiming Rs 200 crore as compensation for “maligning his image in public” and for terming Ssingh a “key conspirator” and “murderer”. The legal notice demands that the channel “drop all malicious footage and articles telecast against Ssingh” and “tender an unconditional public apology in writing/video”.

Speaking to TOI on Thursday, Singh said, “Money alone can’t compensate for the image and respect that I have lost in these past four months. I’ve struggled for 20 years to build my reputation as a film producer and because of the slander campaign that the channel ran against me everyday, financiers for my future projects are backing out, and exhibitors and distributors of our new film, ‘PM Narendra Modi’, are apprehensive about giving it too many shows when they see my name attached.” Ssingh’s production company Legend Global Studio set up in 2015 has made films like ‘Bhoomi’ and ‘Sarbjit’, apart from the biopic on the PM. “Thank god for the CBI enquiry. I was waiting to get my confidence back and take the right step.”

The notice was sent through advocate Rajesh Kumar on Wednesday highlighting news items carried by the channel “with a criminal intent to extort money.” “I’ve been accused of being a drug peddler, being connected to Dawood. They ran a hashtag asking for my arrest for 50 days at a stretch while their correspondents kept stalking my car or tried entering my house. Why? I was not in hiding!” said Ssingh who claims to have known Rajput for ten years. “I met him when he was transitioning from TV to films. Being Biharis we got along very well.”

Pointing at how media speculation had led to him being “singled out” for taking charge of Sushant’s funeral, Ssingh says: “When I reached Sushant’s house on June 14, I didn’t know there was going to be no one except his sister Mitu who I met for the first time that day. There were lots of procedures and no one from the family to get it done so I had to. Was I expected to practice my body language to perform for the media?”

Ssingh says that his legal notice was an attempt to rebuild his reputation and save himself from the trauma that the channel has caused him and his mother and sister. “Will he (Goswami) go on air and apologise to me for 50 days? If he can’t, let’s fight the legal battle.”

Bollywood vs news channels: How studios, screenwriters, artistes came together over six weeks for the move

As film bodies and production houses file a suit seeking to restrain certain news channels / journalists, industry insiders hail the move, while channels say they’ll pursue the truth
Prashant Singh (HINDUSTAN TIMES; October 14, 2020)

On Monday, 38 film bodies and production houses filed a suit in the Delhi High Court, seeking to restrain two news channels and four TV journalists, from making or publishing alleged “irresponsible, derogatory and defamatory remarks” against the film industry, and conducting media trials on various issues. The lawsuit named Republic TV, its editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami and consulting editor Pradeep Bhandari; Times Now, its editor-in-chief Rahul Shivshankar and group editor Navika Kumar as well as social media platforms.

While Bollywood insiders feel it was “high time the industry fought back”, the anchors say they will “continue to fight for the truth”. Filmmaker R Balki, whose company Hope Productions is a part of the lawsuit, says: “You can’t keep defaming the industry, and indulge in name-calling just because you have a TV channel. Forget about them following ethics, there are certain guidelines that they must abide by. It’s not a ‘free-for-all’ kind of a world. So, at the end of the day, taking the legal route is the logical and correct way.”

The lawsuit was filed by four Bollywood industry associations and 34 production houses including those owned by leading actors Anushka Sharma, Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn, actor-director Farhan Akhtar, and filmmakers Vishal Bhardwaj, Karan Johar, Kabir Khan and Rohit Shetty, besides Yash Raj Films etc.

Director Anees Bazmee says, “This should have happened way earlier, but koi baat nahi, der aaye, durust aaye. Defaming the entire industry is not acceptable. There may be certain wrong things in Bollywood but that could be true of every industry. That doesn’t mean you will disrepute everyone and say that 90% of the industry is bad. However, I’m a bit confused as to why the suit has been filed in the Delhi High Court, and not in Mumbai.”

We reached out to filmmakers such as Nikkhil Advani, Guneet Monga, Siddharth Roy Kapur (also president of the Producers Guild of India) and Shibashish Sarkar, whose production houses are a part of the lawsuit, but they refrained from commenting as the case was subjudice.

Goswami, during his show on Monday night, stated that he and his team will continue to look for the truth. “Let them do what they can, the truth will come out and the drugs connection to Bollywood, for those who have come together today [referring to the suit], the truth there also will come out. Our pursuit of the truth will only become stronger, intense and more focused,” he said on his show.

Navika tweeted: “If fighting for justice invites court cases, bring it on. All the A-listers can come together but India will continue to fight for the truth. You can’t intimidate us and can’t take away the viewers who believe in us. Let truth prevail,” tagging Aamir, Shah Rukh and Johar in her tweet.

Shivshankar too, tweeted, tagging Salman, Aamir, Devgn, Johar and Kangana Ranaut; “Cases against journalists of Times Now that have only sought justice for those who are wronged are a bad precedent. The mighty may think they can weaken the resolve of the fearless, but they are wrong.”

After 34 production houses file a lawsuit against Times Now, Republic TV for 'irresponsible' reportage, plaintiffs tell mid-day how studios, screenwriters, artistes came together over six weeks for the move
Uma Ramasubramanian, Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; October 14, 2020)

Over the past four months, Bollywood was a sitting duck as a section of television anchors — who believe that the loudest is the truest — referred to it as "druggies", "scum" and "the dirtiest industry in the country". On Monday, in an unprecedented move, four cine bodies and 34 studios — including Aamir Khan Productions, Ajay Devgn Ffilms, Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies Entertainment and Zoya Akhtar's Tiger Baby Digital — moved the Delhi High Court, seeking to restrain Republic TV and Times Now from making "irresponsible, derogatory and defamatory remarks" against the industry. The lawsuit sought a direction to Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami and journalist Pradeep Bhandari, Times Now editor-in-chief Rahul Shivshankar and group editor Navika Kumar, instructing them to restrain from interfering with the right to privacy of persons associated with the industry. It also called to pull down all the defamatory content published by them against Bollywood.

One of the key plaintiffs reveals that in early September, artistes and filmmakers discussed taking action against the vilification of Bollywood. "A prominent association requested other bodies to join forces and take measures. Finally, a few weeks ago, the cine bodies — including Cine & TV Artistes Association, Producers' Guild, Indian Film & TV Producers' Council and Screenwriters Association, which boasts 31,000 writers — teamed up at the behest of filmmakers. After numerous discussions with prominent artistes and producers, they unanimously decided to seek legal recourse. Now, the industry is speaking up together as their dignified silence was being misconstrued as an admission of guilt," says the plaintiff.

The lawsuit stated that the industry is not asking for a blanket gag order against these channels' reportage of the Sushant Singh Rajput death case. Another plaintiff says, "We're not questioning the factual reporting of the case, but we want them to stop the media trial. The industry is made up of hardworking individuals and they are all being viewed derogatorily because of this smear campaign." If other cine bodies or individuals want to vouch support, provisions will be made for them to legally join the suit.

mid-day reached out to DSK Legal's senior advocate Anand Desai, who filed the lawsuit. He refused to comment as the matter is sub-judice.

Top film houses move HC against 2 news channels

Red Chillies Entertainment, Salman Khan Films, Aamir Khan Productions are among top Bollywood producers who have joined as plaintiffs in the suit.
Richa Banka (HINDUSTAN TIMES; October 13, 2020)

New Delhi : Many of Bollywood’s biggest production houses and industry bodies came together on Monday to move the Delhi High Court seeking to restrain two television news channels from making or publishing alleged “irresponsible, derogatory and defamatory remarks” against the film industry.

The lawsuit — filed by four industry associations and 34 production houses, including those owned by Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Karan Johar, Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, Anil Kapoor, Farhan Akhtar, Rohit Shetty, Vinod Chopra, and Ashutosh Gowariker — also asked for the channels to be barred from conducting a “media trial”.

The Film & Television Producers Guild Of India (PGI), Cine & TV Artistes’ Association (CINTAA), Indian Film and TV Producers Council (IFTPC), Screenwriters Association (SWA), Yash Raj Films, and Reliance Big Entertainment, were among the other petitioners.

The petitioners sought directions against Republic TV, its editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami and consulting editor Pradeep Bhandari; Times Now, its editor-in-chief Rahul Shivshankar, and group editor Navika Kumar, as well as social media platforms.

“The plea comes in the wake of these channels using highly derogatory words and expressions for Bollywood such as ‘dirt’, ‘filth’, ‘scum’, ‘druggies’ and expressions such as ‘it is Bollywood where the dirt needs to be cleaned’, ‘all the perfumes of Arabia cannot take away the stench and the stink of this filth and scum of the underbelly of Bollywood’, ‘This is the dirtiest industry in the country’, and ‘cocaine and LSD drenched Bollywood’,” read the petition, filed by law firm DSK Legal. The matter is likely to be heard this week.

“We are seeking an apology and stay on the kind of coverage that’s being done on news channels,” said Ramesh Taurani, board member, IFTPC.

Amit Behl, senior joint secretary of CINTAA, said the film industry comprised hard-working individuals and couldn’t accept being collectively labelled with allegations. “All of us stand united against attempts to defame the entire filmmaking community,” he added.

The petition came after roughly four months of media controversy over the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput in his Mumbai home on June 14.

The incident is currently being probed by several government agencies — including the Central Bureau of Investigation, Enforcement Directorate and Narcotics Control Bureau. Some sections of the media have blamed Bollywood stars for the death of the 34-year-old actor and, based on private chats and messages, implied that some top film stars and producers were part of a drug ring.

Kumar and Shivshankar said they did nothing wrong.

“Cases against journalists of Times Now that have only sought justice for those who are wronged are a bad precedent. The mighty may think they can weaken the resolve of the fearless at Times Now but they are wrong,” Shivshankar tweeted.

“If fighting for justice invites court cases, bring it on. All the A-listers can come together but India will continue to fight for the truth. You can’t intimidate us @TimesNow & can’t take away the viewers who believe in us. Let truth prevail,” Kumar tweeted.

“Even after the case involving the unfortunate death of actor Mr. Sushant Singh Rajput (which appears to have triggered the diatribe against Bollywood) was transferred to the CBI, these defendants indulged in what could be aptly described as a frenzy suggesting that the CBI would start making arrests,” the petition read.

The petition said it didn’t seek a blanket gag order on media reportage in the Rajput case but wanted an injunction on publication of material that violated applicable laws.

The plea said Bollywood was a huge source of revenue, foreign exchange and employment. “The livelihood of persons associated with Bollywood is being severely impacted by the smear campaign being run by the defendants,” the petition said.

The suit alleged that the defendants conducted and published private investigations and effectively acted as courts to condemn people connected with Bollywood as guilty based on alleged evidence, making a mockery of the criminal justice system.

“The privacy of the members of Bollywood is being invaded, and their reputations are being irreparably damaged by painting the entire Bollywood as criminals, seeped in drug culture, and making being part of Bollywood as synonymous with criminal acts in the public imagination,” the plea read.

The suit contended this was not the first time legal action was initiated against the defendants and some of them were penalised earlier for alleged irresponsible reportage and defamatory content.

The petition came days after actor Rhea Chakraborty – Rajput’s girlfriend – got bail in a drug case. Chakraborty’s lawyer also threatened to take action against people who implicated the 28-year-old actor in Rajput’s death and the drug racket.

Others who have filed the suit are Screenwriters Association (SWA); Aamir Khan Productions; Ad-Labs Films; Ajay Devgn Fflims; Andolan Films; Anil Kapoor Film and Communication Network; Arbaaz Khan Productions; Ashutosh Gowariker Productions; BSK Network and Entertainment; Cape of Good Films; Clean Slate Filmz and Dharma Productions.

The list also included Emmay Entertainment and Motion Pictures; Excel Entertainment; Filmkraft Productions; Hope Production; Kabir Khan Films; Luv Films; Macguffin Pictures; Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment; One India Stories; R.S. Entertainment (Ramesh Sippy Entertainment); Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra Pictures; Red Chillies Entertainment; Reel Life Productions; Reliance Big Entertainment and Rohit Shetty Picturez.

Breach of privilege motion against Arnab Goswami, Kangana Ranaut

Goswami was charged with using derogatory language against CM, NCP chief; Ranaut was charged for comparing Mumbai to PoK
Dharmendra Jore (MID-DAY; September 9, 2020)

The Maha Vikas Aghadi members in the Maharashtra Legislature have moved a breach of privilege motion against the editor of a private news channel, Arnab Goswami, and Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut.

Senior Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik submitted the motion against Goswami in the Assembly, charging him for using derogatory language against Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) boss Sharad Pawar.

Congress veteran Bhai Jagtap filed the motion against Kangana in the upper house for comparing Mumbai to Pakistan occupied Kashmir. Both personalities have also been accused of defaming the Mumbai police.

The presiding officers hadn't decided on accepting the motion for further action which includes cross examination of the people involved by a privilege committee of the houses. The committee recommends punishment, including imprisonment, for the guilty. In some instances, journalists, activists and bureaucrats have been punished.

MVA Vs BJP
Sarnaik's motion was supported by parliamentary affair minister Anil Parab, who said Arnab acted like a judge and used foul language against the CM and Pawar. "He is a tin pot journalist, who has been contracted (by some people) to malign the image of our leaders. If this house can make a law to protect journalists from violence, it can also take action against such a journalist," said Parab.

Parab asked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) whether it gets hurt when someone insults the prime minister. "You should support our move and condemn such journalists," he said. Senior minister Chhagan Bhujbal also spoke in support of the motion. But prompted by certain remarks from the MVA side, the opposition took up a noisy protest. The house was adjourned twice before Deputy speaker Narhari Zirwal said due procedure will be followed.

'What About The PM And Governor?'
Debating the supplementary demand later in the day, opposition leader Devendra Fadnavis asked the government if it wanted to suppress the media by using legislative tools. "We don't support derogatory language against the CM or any other leader. Will you apply the same yardstick to Saamana (Sena's mouthpiece) that uses highly objectionable words against the PM and the Maharashtra governor?

We definitely want the CM to be respected, but we don't like your double standard in respect with the PM and governor," said the ex-CM, adding that he could say the Mumbai police was the best after working five years as the home minister, but didn't understand who put them under pressure to delay and divert the Sushant Singh Rajput death probe. Fadnavis reminded the house that (the CM) Thackeray had also insulted the police by saying that "their ability was restricted to the job of cleaning utensils'.

We have already made four films for my movie app-Ram Gopal Varma

Ram Gopal Varma launches pay-per-view streaming service for his movies
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; August 7, 2020)

Ram Gopal Varma has a knack for making headlines — when he is not making insensitive jokes about testing Coronavirus positive, the director announces a film based on Arnab Goswami as a mark of protest against his brand of journalism. In the latest, Varma has launched the movie app, rgvworldtheatre.com, as a one-stop platform for his works. The filmmaker reveals that going forward, the streaming platform will have features of advance booking and paid trailer previews.

"The movies I make here on will be streamed [exclusively] on the app. We have already made four films, including Thriller, Power Star and Coronavirus, which was shot entirely during the lockdown and is the world's first film on the pandemic. These films are about 20 to 50-minute long. It's a pay-per-view app and the charges — ranging from Ra 150 to Ra 250 — are at par with multiplex ticket prices," says Varma.

Ask him how he shot the four movies amid the restrictions, and the director reveals that he has been selecting subjects that don't demand outdoor shoots. "We have been shooting in a controlled environment. I shot the song, Corona pungu, on a cell phone."

The night before death: 'Om Puri's spirit was shattered by his family and friends'

'Om's spirit was shattered by his family and friends'
Close associate reveals how Om Puri had found it impossible to recover from family betrayal (wife Nandita in her book) and public humiliation (on Arnab Goswami's show) over his heartfelt statements
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; January 11, 2017)

To those who knew him, the downslide for Om Puri started some time ago, when his outspokenness invited a backlash he had never imagined and never recovered from. Smita Singh, who had recently been brought on board for his 'image correction', tells mid-day about how, in the days before he died, Puri poured his heart out on everything that was troubling him.

"Over the last few weeks, he wouldn't stop saying 'Jab main chala jaunga, tab duniya ko meri value hogi…' He never got over the public humiliation on Arnab Goswami's show. His pride was bruised, more so, because of his army lineage. He was never the same after that night. He publicly admitted that he had said those words ("Did we force them to join the army?..."), but that wasn't all what he said. The nature of news in this country, especially in the Twitter age, is such that only a part of the statement is shown to the world. Yes, he apologised. We started talking about that show. He was telling us how he went to Etawah (UP) to meet the parents of Nitin Kumar, the soldier martyred in the Baramullah attacks. He hosted a hawan at their home and gave them a huge sum of money. When he apologised to the family, Kumar's father had said, "Omji, insaan uttejna mein bohot cheezein bol jata hai. Aapko afsos hai aur humein aapse koi shikwe nahin hai." That was solace for him, to a certain extent, till the media made a mockery of that as well. He was patriotic. After that episode, he wanted to start his own political party, called Insaniyat, but could never muster strength for it. His spirit was shattered."

Losing a friend
Singh also talked about how a fallout with his best friend stung him. "That evening, we even got to know how he fell out with his best friend, who had been with him through college and drama school. After he spoke out against Aamir Khan’s intolerance statement vociferously, his dearest friend sent him a text message saying, "F*** you!" That was that between them. He made multiple attempts to reconcile, but never got a reply," she said.

Wife's betrayal
Personally, too, his life was turbulent. The evening before he passed away, he talked about how his wife (Nandita Puri) had made a public joke of him (after she published his biography that had some salacious details about his life). "He was doing his best to move on. He was vulnerable that evening, gurgling down pegs of whiskey like he did every day, but he had the haunted look of a broken man. The producer of his next film (Rambhajan Zindabad) Khalid Kidwai offered to drop him to his friend, Manoj Pahwa's, house," she said.

His estranged wife Nandita tells us, "We were supposed to go for Pankaj Kapur's daughter, Sana, and Pahwa's son, Mayank's engagement ceremony. Om called me and by the time we got there, he reached my house. He went up to my mom and said, "Kya budhia, kyun sadd rahi hai yahan. Tu bhi mere saath swarg chal." He was in high spirits. He called me again and said, "Tum aur Ishaan jaldi aa jao." I told him we'd see him later. When he called me again, I told him, "It's too late; we’ll see you tomorrow." Ishaan and I still regret not seeing him that day. Ishaan was going to be with him on January 8, 9 and 10 for the shooting of 'Tubelight', and they were to head to Khandala from there,” says Nandita.

Nandita adds, "We were not divorced and are still legally married. We had a separation. Trishul is his home and my marital home. By the Hindu law, he was allowed one wife. It can be an ex-wife and a current wife. Om had only one wife. He helped his nephews and strangers, but now when his son needs him, he is gone. I’ll miss him terribly because he is a habit. I have spent the longest part of my life with him more than my son or my parents."

Waited for son
Manoj told us, "He came for barely 15 minutes and left soon after. I don’t know where he was headed." Khalid drove him down to Nandita’s house, but by the time they reached, Ishaan was already at the party. "Omji didn’t want to go back to the party and asked Ishaan to return home. But, when Ishaan didn’t come for a bit, we left. I dropped him home," said Khalid.

Buddhism beckoned
Singh said Buddhism and its values had immensely influenced Om in his last days. "He wanted to take a 15-day trip to Lumbini (Nepal), the birthplace of the Buddha. He was scheduled to be there for 15 days later this month," Smita said.

Sunil Grover’s introductory song in Coffee With D features the hook line 'The nation wants to know'?

MUMBAI MIRROR (December 27, 2016)

Mirror has learnt that actor-comedian Sunil Grover’s introductory song in the upcoming film, Coffee With D, features a hook-line inspired by an often-repeated phrase by Arnab Goswami’s news debate, “The nation wants to know.”

Playback-turned-composer Shaan has lent his voice to the number. Interestingly, not long ago, Sunil had denied reports that his character is fashioned after the real Arnab in the film directed by Vishal Mishra.

Thirty nine-year-old Sunil, who rose to fame as Gutthi on the now-defunct Comedy Nights With Kapil, plays a loud show anchor in the film that also features Dipannita Sharma. Now, we wait to see how Arnab reacts to this odd homage.

Zakir Hussain as Dawood Ibrahim in Coffee With D
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; December 15, 2016)

Dawood Ibrahim is a dreaded name, one that evokes everything from anger to hatred. But, Bollywood has never stopped using him as a muse. Zakir Hussain is the latest to play the don in upcoming film, 'Coffee With D', that also marks the debut of stand-up comic Sunil Grover.

Incidentally, as part of prep for another film earlier, Zakir had read many of crime writer S Hussain Zaidi's books, especially Dongri to Dubai. "But, the best way to really know about Dawood is to go through archives and news stories. There is so much written about the man that it's enough to understand his behaviour and mannerisms," he said.

Was it a challenge for him, though? "Well, the real challenge was to recreate his look. There is a certain image of how the man looks and dresses. We have done our best to come close to it," he said, adding, "There is possibility that he dresses differently now. I can't tell you when the movie is set and what the backdrop is, but we wanted the man to look like the Dawood of the '90s."

This is the third time this year that Dawood has managed a screen reference in Bollywood. Last month, Farhan Akhtar shot for a special sequence for Arjun Rampal's film Daddy (based on gangster Arun Gawli) at Mehboob Studios. Farhan had earlier told us, "I had seen videos of how he looked, the way he dressed. It is a cameo, but a well-fleshed out one. The characters (Dawood and Arun Gawli) are shown to have a few meetings like they did in real life."

DAWOODS, UPCOMING AND IN THE RECENT PAST:

> Farhan Akhtar in Arjun Rampal's upcoming film, Daddy, based on gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli

> Siddhanth Kapoor in Apoorva Lakhia's next, Haseena: The Queen of Mumbai, based on Dawood's sister, Haseena Parkar (played by Shraddha Kapoor).

> Rishi Kapoor as Iqbal Seth alias Goldman, a character modeled after Dawood, in D-Day (2013).

> Akshay Kumar as Shoaib Khan, loosely based on the don's life, in Once Upon A Time in Mumbai Dobaara (2013).

> Emraan Hashmi as a younger Dawood in the first part of Once Upon... in 2010.

Doctor saab turns journo

Sunil Grover, better known as Dr Mashoor Gulati on Kapil Sharma's show, will play a television journalist in 'Coffee With D'. His character, Arnab Ghosh, has been sketched out on the lines of journo Arnab Goswami. Grover, however, maintains, "Arnab Goswami is an entertaining journalist, but I am not trying to imitate him. It's the director's call to name the character. "Subconsciously, I might have picked up a few things of Arnab, but it's a fictional film."

Arnab Goswami and Sunil Grover

Does Arnab Goswami think he runs the country from his newsroom?-Pahlaj Nihalani

DNA (October 8, 2016)

He is by far the most popular news journalist on television. But the aggressive Arnab Goswami is in the line of fire for hauling Bollywood actors and filmmakers for their fence-sitting/pro-peace attitude.

On Tuesday night, Arnab slammed Om Puri for his politically incorrect statements regarding the Indian Army and the jawaans. Om was also not allowed to speak a word in his defence as the panelists slammed him and sneered at the actor for “acting arty” at a time, when the country is at war.

Censor chief Pahlaj Nihalani spoke up against what he calls the tyranny of television journalism. He says, “They command you to come on their channel, and then humiliate you. I’ve stopped going on Arnab Goswami’s channel. Why should I, when he has already made up his mind that I am wrong about everything and he is right about everything? It is worse than being on one of those ‘roasts’.”

Nihalani also accuses Goswami of carrying on his own private war against Pakistan from his newsroom. “He has made up his mind that India is at war with Pakistan. Anyone who says we aren’t, is anti-national. What I want to ask Arnab is, does he think he runs the country from his newsroom?,” he says.

Irrfan Khan gets death threats

Subhash K Jha (DNA; July 27, 2016)

On Monday night, Irrfan created history, when on Arnab Goswami’s talk show, he took on religious fundamentalists, self-appointed custodians, and interpreters of the holy scriptures.

Irrfan’s argument was simple. All he politely submitted to the panel of angry attackers was, he didn’t need any mediators and go-betweens to establish a connection between him and God.

This naturally incensed the religious heads who sarcastically suggested that Irrfan should restrict himself to acting and not intervene in religious matters, This is the typical argument offered by religious heads when they feel threatened by an emboldened rational line of thought which comes forward to ask basic question on ritualistic practice in any religion.

Irrfan very clearly stated he didn’t need any support to uphold his beliefs. That his doubts and misgivings about the way religion and the holy scriptures are interpreted, were his own. At a time when terror attacks are creating havoc with human faith and basic trust among human beings, Irrfan has thrown the option for all individuals with a voice to say they are united in creating peace and harmony in a world torn apart by divisive forces.

For his outspokenness, Irrfan has apparently been flooded with threats and intimidation. While he refused to comment any further on the matter, a colleague said, “This is not an attempt to be fashionably irreverent. His expression of doubts and misgivings come from a deep-rooted conviction that much of what is wrong in the world today, has to do with the wrong interpretation of religious books. He’s aware of the dangers that his frankspeak poses to him and his family. We are very proud of him.”
