The Maruti Story makers want the show to represent India at the Emmys: "Maruti is responsible for where Gurgaon is today"

Producers Arjun Singgh Baran and Kartick Nishandar share their ambition as they adapt RC Bhargava’s book ‘The Maruti Story’; say the series will trace the car’s making in a changing India
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; October 27, 2026)

Maruti’s story is about more than the car that put India on wheels. For Arjun Singgh Baran and Kartick D Nishandar, it is a story of the common man, the making of modern India and a dream that was once met with scepticism overseas. The duo, who are adapting The Maruti Story, based on the book by R C Bhargava, have secured the book rights as well as the life rights of Bhargava, the rights of Suzuki Motors and those of its late chairman Osamu Suzuki. Produced by Baran, Nishandar and Jyoti Deshpande of Jio Studios, the series is being developed as a character-driven drama and not a documentary chronicling the company’s milestones.

“We wanted to tell the story of India’s common man. What better than the Maruti story, around which the common man’s journey has grown? India has grown around it, and places like Gurgaon have grown around it. Maruti is responsible for where Gurgaon is today. It was a no-man’s land, and they built a housing complex there and brought in Delhi Public School, among other things, for the common man. We want to tell stories that impact the common man’s thought process and allow people to see themselves in the characters,” says Nishandar.

The makers acquired the book rights in 2022, but securing the material needed for a screen adaptation was a considerably longer exercise. The process involved negotiating the book rights, individual character rights and personality rights, which took eight to nine months. They had secured the rights around three-and-a-half to four years ago, says Nishandar, and have since spent considerable time developing the screenplay.

“Even if you take the book rights, it does not mean you have the right to tell everyone’s story or talk about every person in it. It is imperative to acquire the rights for the names you are going to use, unless they are in the public domain. The book rights, character rights and individual personality rights are all very important. You have to be convinced as makers before you put your money behind a subject. We were convinced that we wanted to tell the common man’s story, and that is what drove us. We got life rights of R C Bhargava, along with rights from Suzuki Motor Corporation and Osamu Suzuki,” Singgh says.

The series will explore the personal and family arcs surrounding the larger journey, while keeping the common man at its centre. The screenplay is complete, and the makers are moving towards the dialogue stage, with conversations underway with dialogue writers who have worked on leading shows. The ambition, Nishandar says, is to make the story travel beyond India.

“We don’t want to make a documentary or just document facts. We want to talk about characters. The journey of Maruti is a parallel universe, but if people cannot connect with the relatability and the thought processes of the characters, they will not believe the story. Writing is imperative when you are telling any story. If your writing lands correctly, it is your biggest hero. Then come your actors, your director and the ecosystem around it. We are extremely involved in the writing process, and we have finished the screenplay. We want this show to represent India at the Emmys and the Golden Globes. That is also why we took so much time to write it,” says Nishandar.

The production is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2027. The team plans to recreate several locations, including Tokyo, the European Motor Show and Delhi as it existed during the period being depicted. The makers are also preparing to use extensive graphics and visual effects to recreate the era, while ensuring that the production remains faithful to the subject.

At the heart of the story is the moment when Indian officials went looking for an international partner to help build a car that Indians could afford and drive on Indian roads. Nishandar recalls how the ambition was initially dismissed.

“When R C Bhargava and V Krishnamurthy went to Europe and said they wanted to collaborate with someone to make an Indian car that an Indian could afford and drive on Indian roads, they were laughed out of the room. They were asked how India could afford to make a car. That hit Bhargava so strongly that he decided to make the dream come true. He did not have any experience in automobile engineering; he was a bureaucrat. He then looked east, and that is where Japan came in. That is how the collaboration with Suzuki happened,” Singgh says.

The makers believe that this history has a global resonance, particularly at a time when India’s manufacturing capabilities have evolved considerably. Nishandar points to Maruti’s reach, its contribution to the growth of an ancillary vendor ecosystem and the role the company has played in making car ownership accessible to millions of Indians.

“We should proudly say that Maruti has created a vendor community and a global outreach. There are companies making auto parts for Rolls-Royce. The Europeans who looked down upon us at that time are now coming back to India to seek help. This has to be a story told globally, and this is the right time,” he says.

The series will also draw on archival material made available by the Maruti team, including footage from the company’s history. One of the defining moments it intends to revisit is Indira Gandhi presenting the first Maruti 800 key to Harpal Singh. The makers also plan to shoot at the Gurgaon factory, where the space associated with the car’s inauguration still exists.

“We are getting a lot of archival footage from the Maruti team. We are also going to shoot at the Gurgaon factory, where Mrs Gandhi inaugurated the first car. They have opened their doors to us, and we want to make the series as relatable and relevant as possible. But there is a thin line between using archival footage throughout the show and using it only when it is relevant. Otherwise, it becomes a documentary. We will use it to add relevance, not as a substitute for going out and shooting,” Nishandar says.

Maniesh Paul would feel claustrophobic in the prosthetics-Arjun Singgh Baran and Kartk Nishandar

Why so serious, Maniesh Paul?

With Maniesh known for his comic timing, Rafuchakkar’s makers on casting him against type as a serious conman in his OTT debut
Hiren Kotwani (MID-DAY; June 9, 2023)

When it comes to host-actor Maniesh Paul, most of us expect a laugh a minute. His maiden web series Rafuchakkar then comes as a refreshing change of pace. Creative duo Arjun Singgh Baran and Kartk Nishandar say they were certain about casting Paul as a remorseless conman swindling the rich and corrupt. Nishandar explains, “Maniesh is known for his comic timing on reality shows. People would expect him to do comedy, so it was a great casting [choice] as he is doing a serious show in his first OTT venture.”

In Ritam Shrivastav’s directorial venture, the actor will be seen in different avatars — from a 70-year-old villager, to a gym trainer and a Sardar — as his character pulls off one con after another. Shooting with prosthetics was a challenge for Paul, says Nishandar. “Maniesh would feel claustrophobic in the prosthetics. So, he took six days to get used to them. He had to gain 15 to 20 kilos to play a  villager, and then lose the excess weight, and attain a ripped physique to essay the part of a gym trainer.”

The creative duo, who have previously made Naxalbari (2020) and Raktanchal (2020), consider the nine-part Jio Cinema series among the toughest offerings they have worked on. Baran reasons, “What makes the genre of con dramas difficult is that we can’t have any loops open. So, we spent about a year-and-a-half only to write it.”

Sushmita Sen took six months to say yes to Taali-Kartk D Nishandar

Kartk D Nishandar: Sushmita took six months to say yes

With Sen being their only choice to bring Gauri’s life story to screen, Taali creators recount actor’s first meeting with transgender activist
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; May 3, 2023)

When Arjun Singgh Baran and Kartk D Nishandar came across a story based on the life of transgender activist Gauri Sawant, they immediately recognized its potential. Three years on, the duo is almost ready with Taali, which sees Sushmita Sen step into Sawant’s role, and National Award winner Ravi Jadhav at the helm. The idea behind the upcoming web series, Nishandar says, is to chronicle Sawant’s fight for transgender rights while also highlighting society’s apathy towards them.

“Gauri and Laxmi [Narayan Tripathi] went to the Supreme Court to fight for transgenders’ rights. Taali is an inspiring story of how a young boy Ganesh [identifies] as a female, moves from Pune to Mumbai, and then builds her life [as Gauri],” says Nishandar.

After acquiring the rights from Sawant, the creators made her an integral part of the script development. “After Afeefa Nadiadwala wrote the story, we spent a lot of time taking Gauri through it. We dramatised it to make it entertaining, yet kept it as real as possible,” recounts Baran. Next came the big question: Who would play the protagonist? Sen was their unanimous choice.

Baran says, “Sushmita had done a fantastic job in Aarya. We thought if we could get her for this role, it’d be amazing.”

What followed was a long wait, as the actor pored over the script. Nishandar adds, “Sushmita said she loved the script, but needed some time to absorb it. She took six months to say yes, but by then, she knew the script by heart and had done her homework. So much so that when we would add a line or change a scene during the shoot, she would point out that it wasn’t there [earlier].”

Before she stepped into Sawant’s shoes, Sen wanted to meet the activist who had championed different causes — from adoption rights of transgenders, to founding an NGO that provides counselling to them. The duo met in late 2022.

Baran elaborates, “It was amazing to see them together. Sushmita lights up the room she is in, and Gauri is like a mind reader, who can see a person’s soul. Though we had gone through the entire script, Gauri narrated some [other experiences]. She even gave a rudraksh to Sushmita for the shoot.”

Samantaar creators team up with Ravi Jadhav and Kshitij Patwardhan for their next mega Hindi series

A group photo of four stalwarts from the entertainment field has created a buzz in the industry. Leading director from the film industry Ravi Jadhav, noted playwright, lyricist, theatre director and screenplay writer Kshitij Patwardhan and GSEAMS’s Arjun Singgh Baran and Kartk D Nishandar are seen in a photo that has become a talking point on social media.

To quench the curiosity of the patrons and stakeholders from the industry, GSEAMS has revealed that they are doing a Hindi web series with the leading duo from the industry. The web series will be directed by Ravi Jadhav and written by Kshitij Patwardhan.

Ravi Jadhav is one of the most influential directors in the Marathi industry. Natrang and Balgandharv, the two outstanding films directed by him, won National Awards. Balak Palak, Rege, Time Pass and Nude are some of his most popular and widely appreciated films.

Kshitij Patwardhan is an Indian screenwriter, theatre director, playwright, and lyricist, who received the Filmfare award for best screenplay in 2018, the Filmfare award for best lyrics in 2020, along with the prestigious Tarun Tejankit Award, in 2019. He is also the recipient of multiple Maharashtra state awards and Zee Gaurav, MIFTA and Star Pravah Ratna for his outstanding contribution to Marathi cinema. He is considered one of the most talented writers in the film and television industry. Time Pass, Time Please, Aghaat, YZ and Classmates are the films for which he has worked in the capacity of a writer.

“GSEAMS always thrusts upon the quality content for which we are committed to our audience. With the two extremely talented artists from the industry on board for the new web series, we expect it to be received well,” said GSEAMS’s Arjun Singgh Baran and Kartk D Nishandar.

GSEAMS is a well-known name in the entertainment industry. After giving hit Marathi films like Mogara Phulaalaa, Bonus, Fugay, Arjun and Kartk have once again proved that GSEAMS can stand true to its values of providing quality content in the web series genre. GSEAMS entered into the production of web series during the Covid-19 pandemic. Naxalbari and Samantar 1 and 2, produced by GSEAMS, have proved successful amid huge viewership on OTT.

Raktanchal Season 2 gets an overwhelming response

After the great success of their two web series, Samantar (season 1 & 2) on MX Player and Naxalbari on Zee5 over the last two years, GSEAMS’ new series Raktanchal Season 2 has also received a tremendous response from the audience. Produced by Arjun Singgh Baran and Kartk D Nishandar and directed by Ritam Srivastava, the series has created a huge buzz among the viewers.

Karan Patel, Mahie Gill, Kranti Prakash Jha, Nikitin Dheer, Ashish Vidhyarti starrer Raktanchal Season 2 had a global premiere on February 11, 2022 on MX Player and is getting an overwhelming response since its release.

Commenting on the release, Arjun and Kartk said, “We are extremely happy with the way the show has taken shape and the response we are receiving from the audience. We are delighted to be associated with MX Player for the third time in a short span of 2 years and will continue to helm many more web series with them.”

Commenting on the director Ritam Srivastava, they said, “Ritam is extremely passionate, creative, focused about every minute detail of the show and he puts his heart and mind in whatever he does.”

The duo are firm believers of quality content and are experienced in the production of films & web series. Raktanchal Season 2 is a crime drama inspired by real-life events from the '80s of Purvanchal, Uttar Pradesh. It depicts the crime that used to happen relating to tenders. The story is about the criminal empire of Waseem Khan, who is challenged by a young criminal Vijay Singh. While Waseem Khan is a pure criminal, Vijay is kind-hearted, who in spite of turning into an anti-hero, serves people as much as he can.

The story sets in motion, a clash for acquiring tenders with a political battle in the background, which unleashes a bloodbath in the city of Purvanchal. Vijay must overcome great personal odds to beat Waseem Khan and become the tender king.

Vijay Singh (Kranti Prakash Jha) may have lost the final showdown with Waseem Khan (Nikitin Dheer) in season 1, but the gangs of Uttar Pradesh have bigger graves to dig as the top guns of Bombay Police come knocking at their doors. Why the sudden broadening of the horizon?

‘Raktanchal season 2’ is about power over politics, and beyond…

Talking about the show, director Ritam Srivastava said, “It was a great experience shooting for Raktanchal Season 2. This show has given me a lot of recognition and love from the audience. The cast was very cooperative and did a brilliant job. Working with Arjun and Kartk of GSEAMS has been a fantastic experience. They are very much involved in the creative process and the production of the show. Not only do they have a creative bent of mind but are also extremely organized in the production process. They personally take an interest on a day-to-day basis and ensure that the shoot goes smoothly.”

We are extremely thrilled that we will be able to take this story, steered by director Vishal Furia, who specializes in this genre, and woven with brilliant performances by versatile actors like Swwapnil Joshi and Pooja Sawant, to a global audience through Amazon Prime Video.”

Rajeev Khandelwal bags Zee5’s action-packed web series, Naxal

Poster of Gashmeer Mahajani and Pooja Sawant’s Bonus is endearing and fresh!

Producers Arjun Singgh Baran and Kartk D Nishandar of GSEAMS ((Global Sports Entertainment And Media Solutions Private Limited) are on a roll. After coming up with multiple films in 2019, they have now unveiled the first look of their upcoming Marathi film, Bonus. The film stars Gashmeer Mahajani and Pooja Sawant and both feature in the poster, released by the makers recently. This first look has a nice touch and indicates that the film can turn out to be a nice, slice-of-life romantic drama. The backdrop of Mumbai’s Worli Koliwada and Bandra-Worli Sea Link and the large suitcase on the side adds to the impact.

Moreover, the pairing has also been noticed. Handsome hunk Gashmeer Mahajani, in a very short span of his career, has carved a niche for himself with his recent films like Deool Band, Kanha, One Way Ticket and Mala Kahich Problem Nahi. Pooja Sawant on the other hand is also quite popular thanks to her films like Daagdi Chawl, Vrundavan, Poshter Boyz, Lapachhapi and even the last year’s Bollywood flick, Junglee. Both come together for the first time and the chemistry seems interesting, from the poster.

And not just that, Bonus is written and directed by Saurabh Bhave, who is also been appreciated for his skills in screenplay and writing. He had penned screenplay for many hit Marathi films including Haapus, Taryanche Bait, Hrudayantar and Chumbak, among others. He says, “Bonus is that extra bit that we all deserve - extra bit of money, joy and happiness, But unfortunately, some people are too privileged and some are not. Bonus tries to bring these two worlds together - The world of Haves and Have Nots. It is the joyride journey of a boy who, in the process of proving his worth, encounters with the whole new world that changes his life and beliefs upside down. It is story of his coming of age.”

“As the title suggests, it is about courage, audacity and the path differently treaded.Bonus will be another film which will keep our tradition of powerful story and star cast as witnessed in our previous films,” say Arjun Singgh Baran and Kartik D Nishandar of GSEAMS.

GSEAMS, a leading company in entertainment sector, had earlier produced Fugay, Tula Kalnaar Nahi, Ranangan, Vicky Velingkar and presented films like Bhikari. GSEAMS is one of the top studios in Maharashtra having its vertical spread across film productions and presentation, TV productions, talent management, movie marketing and promotion and satellite syndication.

Bonus releases on February 28, 2020.

Teaser of Sonalee Kulkarni-starrer Vicky Velingkar THRILLS the audience!

The talented and gorgeous actress Sonalee Kulkarni seems to be on a roll this year. She impressed audiences with her bubbly performance in Ti And Ti. On Diwali, she rocked the show with Hirkani, a film that’s doing great business at the box office. And now she is set to end 2019 with a bang with Vicky Velingkar. The makers released the teaser poster of the film on September 18, where only a part of Sonalee’s face was seen. Yet, it added to the intrigue.

The teaser of Vicky Velingkar is now out and it gives a slightly better idea of the film and it’s genre. It shows Sonalee’s character being chased by a mysterious and scary Mask Man in abandoned locations. What adds to the thrill is that Vicky is no damsel-in-distress. She seems determined to outsmart and defeat the Mask Man. The teaser is cut very well and it is sync with the film’s thrill element.

Vicky Velingkar is produced by Arjun Singgh Baran and Kartik D Nishandar of GSEAMS (Global Sports Entertainment And Media Solutions Private Limited) along with in association with Dancing Shiva, Pranay Chokshi, Anuya Chauhan Kudecha, Ritesh Kudecha, Sachin Maruti Lokhande and Atul Janardan Tarkar. Arjun and Kartik, while speaking about the promo, say, “The teaser has been well received on the social media and creates curiosity among the audience. The film is a one-of-its-kind experience in Marathi, and that is reflected in the teaser.”

It is directed by Saurabh Varma who made Hindi films like Maniesh Paul’s debut flick Mickey Virus, the action flick 7 Hours To Go and the unreleased comic caper Solid Patels. Saurabh reveals, “Vicky Velingkar is a comic book artist and a clock seller who entangles in an unexpected life mystery. The film is about a female underdog who rises against all odds.”

Besides Sonalee Kulkarni, Vicky Velingkar also features Spruha Joshi, Sangram Samel, Kettan Singh, Gaurav Devidas More and Vanita Kharat. It releases on December 6, 2019.

Chocolate boy Swapnil Joshi to be seen in an intense flick Bali-The Victim; teaser poster released!

One of the most popular and talented actors of Marathi industry, Swapnil Joshi, is mostly known for light-hearted films. But occasionally, he has surprised audiences with serious fares and with roles in which he has grey shades. Swapnil continues this tradition with Bali-The Victim, whose teaser poster released today. And it is so intriguing that it has already become a talking point. It depicts cross that too in bloody red colour. And there’s also blood dripping, which adds to the intrigue value.

Bali-The Victim is directed by Vishal Furia, who earlier directed the 2016 Marathi horror film Lapachhapi. It was his directorial debut and was a box office success. He also directed the popular web series Criminal Justice with Tigmanshu Dhulia. The producers of Bali-The Victim are Arjun Singgh Baran and Kartik Nishandar of GSEAMS (Global Sports Entertainment and Media Solutions Private Limited). They have produced films like Mogara Phulalaa, Fugey, Tula Kalanar Nahi and Ranangan and the upcoming flick Vicky Welingkar and they presented Bhikari.

Swapnil Joshi and the makers however refuse to share much about the film’s plot, thereby increasing the film’s curiosity. Swapnil Joshi says, “I had promised audience of Marathi films that I’ll explore new genre this year. This film is a small step taken by me in that direction. I am very happy to get into the horror space. Also, it’s great that I have got an opportunity to do it with my favourite people like Kartik, Arjun and an expert director in this field, Vishal. I am sure that we together could ‘scare’ the people and at the same time, give them an entertaining time.”

Vishal Furia meanwhile states, “Lapachhapi was well received by the Marathi audience proving that they love the horror genre. The response encouraged me to continue making horror films for them. With a star like Swapnil, who has been loved by the audience, on board and maverick producers Arjun and Kartik backing my second horror film, I promise to make it bigger and scarier than Lapachhapi.”

Lastly, Arjun Singgh Baran and Kartik D Nishandar say, “We are happy to venture into a new genre of horror films. What could be a better choice than having Vishal Furia as a director after his success as director of Lapachhapi. The film is considered as one of the top ten horror films in the country. We also have one of the top actors in the industry Swapnil Joshi in lead role. He is like a family member for us. Even for him, this would be an opportunity in his career to explore a different genre.”
